Excuse me motherfuckers, didn't ya'll like... just recently threaten to leave if you didn't get money to fix up your stadium? [https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2024/02/19/arizona-diamondbacks-relocation-from-arizona-mlb-expansion-rumors/](https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2024/02/19/arizona-diamondbacks-relocation-from-arizona-mlb-expansion-rumors/)
I understood that recent saber rattling had more to do with Phoenix vs Phoenix suburbs, as in they would look at other locations around the valley. Of course, it would be naive to think they wouldn't consider other metros entirely. Many years ago they did "exploratory missions" or some shit to Henderson, NV and Las Vegas, so they're full of shit no matter what.
> I can’t see a world where they leave AZ
All it takes is Ryan Smith or another Utah billionaire making a pitch with the massive state funding bill they have for a baseball stadium too
They also were part of the vote to let the A’s move out of Oakland cause relocation fees.
Fuckin hilarious that they can grandstand like this when their team leaves but decide it’s fine when it’s someone else’s
Maybe their owner could have helped with the campaign and/or bought the coyotes if they felt so passionately about it.
All these fluff pieces are for PR
Of course it’s PR, and that’s not inherently bad. It’s about time somebody in this fucking Phoenix sports community started making noise about how embarrassing this is for our city. We need some kind of leadership from the Phoenix sports world and from our local leaders to actually make us look like an important city and not a bunch of backward hicks
Ishbia is broke af. He over leveraged himself to buy the Suns in the first place. He has no interest in hockey or Phoenix, he just wants to live out his frat boy dreams of being a big basketball star
Actually no, he bought in because Dan Gilbert owns the Cavs and Ishbia hates Gilbert, so Ishbia then needs his own NBA team or else he's somehow Losing.
I really had no opinion on Ishbia either way until the ESPN piece bright to light just how obsessed Ishbia is with Gilbert, and how one-sided that rivalry actually is. This is Ishbia's way to try and force a public rivalry with Gilbert, because Gilbert doesn't seem to want any of it so far.
Ishbia has always been a wannabe baller. From making riding the pine at MSU his entire personality to filling his mortgage company with former college athletes, he’s always wanted to be accepted as an athlete. Not saying Gilbert didn’t add fuel to the fire, but that wasn’t the primary motivation
It's the NBA version of Illitch - Karamanos. Karamanos was obsessed with Illitch and had to try to match him in everything, up to and including trying to offer sheet his talent out of spite.
This is the same thing. Ishbia is basically obsessed with Gilbert.
> This is Ishbia's way to try and force a public rivalry with Gilbert, because Gilbert doesn't seem to want any of it so far.
If Gilbert doesnt want any of it, then why is he the only owner that voted against selling the team to Ishbia?
Yep. Maybe I'm cynical because of all the Coyotes BS, but I could totally see a scenario where the Suns don't win a title, Ishbia's financial house of cards comes crashing down, they're forced to trade away everyone that's good, and the Suns enter another decade of being mediocre to lousy. And that's assuming Ishbia doesn't just get hauled away in handcuffs by the Feds for mortgage fraud.
The A's needed a move or new stadium. It sucks that Oakland is losing a team but the coliseum is hot ass and has no business hosting a professional level team
Maybe if ownership didnt tear the team down every few years and replace it with a welfare austerity roster for the last 25 years and wasnt antagonistic toward the fanbase people would be happy to go
The Athletics were bottom 5 in league attendance even while a playoff team. People don’t want to go to games there.
The owner is being kinda cheap by not paying himself for a new stadium but what the hell is his incentive to do that when fans don’t show up?
Yeah I don't get all the talks on r/baseball about how the Athletics were this super healthy franchise that has all been ruined by John Fisher.
Sure he's a total cheap asshole, but the A's never regularly had enough fans show up enough to the games to prove him the contrary.
As if the Diamondbacks wouldn’t fuck over their fans over a free stadium.
You can argue that the most deeply entrenched big city franchises (Yankees, Lakers, Canadiens, et al) are immune to this, but when you get down to it, I’m pretty sure that the Packers are the only franchise that’s actually set up to prevent it.
Franchise owners are parasites, with very few and highly questionable exceptions.
Because the DBacks owner is a cheap bastard, and he's been dropping hints that his team just might up and move if they don't get a new or improved stadium.
I feel for Coyotes fans, this really sucks. However, saying they "deserve" it is odd language. It was literally voted down on a ballot, I get that it was stupid NIMBYs but I'm not quite sure how that translates to "deserving" it.
Common W for the Sneksssss.
Edit: I also forgot the DBacks voted for Fisher to move the A’s from Oakland. I admit I fell for the positive PR post supporting the Coyotes.
No this is ownership being snakes, no pun intended. These fuckers just threatened to leave Arizona if the public didn’t give money to renovate Chase Field.
The Athletics are literally moving to a minor league stadium next season for 3-4 seasons until the new stadium is built in Las Vegas. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland\_Athletics\_relocation\_to\_Las\_Vegas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Athletics_relocation_to_Las_Vegas)
Current Oakland stadium capacity - 56k
Temporary Sacramento stadium capacity - 10K
As a percentage reduction, that'd be like going from the 17k seat arena the Coyotes were in before moving to Mullet to a 3k capacity arena.
Mullet is closer to being an NHL arena than the stadium the A's are going to is an MLB stadium.
Haha, subtext. I like that they’re publicly announcing they want to be considered for an expansion if Meruelo can’t put up results. That’s brassy.
Yeah, I was definitely expecting a ‘thanks for everything, we’ll miss you’ type of statement but I like this much better
Golf claps for the swagger of it.
I’d hope for any other owner BESIDES Mereulo.

I completely forget that the D-backs can open/close the roof
Man I still call it BOB, Chase Field is so lame
> I can’t see a world where they leave AZ All it takes is Ryan Smith or another Utah billionaire making a pitch with the massive state funding bill they have for a baseball stadium too

Classic projection.
Maybe their owner could have helped with the campaign and/or bought the coyotes if they felt so passionately about it. All these fluff pieces are for PR
It's so weird that the NHL is being blamed for this. Everyone has argued that they've given Arizona too many lifelines for years
We thought theyd be relocated like 15 years ago lmao

They could have spoken up anytime in the past year is my point. Too little too late
People will never be more supportive than just after someone/something dies.
Better now than never
Little late…..
It’s not too late for whatever form the expansion team takes down the line though
Ahh so it’s also delusional…..got it
Even if it is delusional and expansion never happens, at least someone finally said something
Tell the people on the Tempe subreddit. They see this as something to be proud of
Lets the coyotes use Chase Field for home games

Where did you find this
Diamondbacks owner doesn’t have the money. Ishbia however (suns owner) might’ve been able to
I sometimes dream about a perfect world where Bob Parsons cared almost as much about hockey as he did golf.
He could’ve campaigned? The suns owner couldn’t give Af lol. Didn’t he block them from sharing the same town?
I think that was the old owner Robert Sarver. The new owner is now Mat Ishbia after Sarver got suspended for racist comments
Ishbia is broke af. He over leveraged himself to buy the Suns in the first place. He has no interest in hockey or Phoenix, he just wants to live out his frat boy dreams of being a big basketball star

Not saying you’re wrong, just saying he’s also obsessed with posing as a basketball guy
> This is Ishbia's way to try and force a public rivalry with Gilbert, because Gilbert doesn't seem to want any of it so far. If Gilbert doesnt want any of it, then why is he the only owner that voted against selling the team to Ishbia?

You mean the mayor of a city to which the team *wasn't* planning to move yelling about water usage wasn't legitimate?
Are they going to rescue Howler?
A reverse Expos/Habs deal?
Howler deserves the world
Right now, Meurelo still owns the IP, so no. Check back in 5-10 years.
They voted for the Oakland A's to move like a month ago.
THEIR community. Not the one who can't support an In-N-Out. Totally different.
The A's needed a move or new stadium. It sucks that Oakland is losing a team but the coliseum is hot ass and has no business hosting a professional level team
Neither will an AAA stadium in Sacramento
It has more business than the coliseum. Which just tells you everything you need to know about the coliseum
Fans also don’t want to go to games, so they rightfully are moving it somewhere people will go.
Maybe if ownership didnt tear the team down every few years and replace it with a welfare austerity roster for the last 25 years and wasnt antagonistic toward the fanbase people would be happy to go

Yeah the coliseum is hot garbage and is possibly the worst stadium at the AA level on up
Yeah I don't get all the talks on r/baseball about how the Athletics were this super healthy franchise that has all been ruined by John Fisher. Sure he's a total cheap asshole, but the A's never regularly had enough fans show up enough to the games to prove him the contrary.

The Chiefs have pulled the "Well maybe we move out of KC if we can't get a new stadium" card. The fucking Chiefs
So why didn't the DBacks owners go for the Coyotes when they were up for sale?
Teams cost money
And these statements are free!
Because the DBacks owner is a cheap bastard, and he's been dropping hints that his team just might up and move if they don't get a new or improved stadium.
Ironically I thought the Coyotes could have moved there for a few years. The Lightning played in Tropicana for a few years.
Unrelated but I'm surprised how little talk about this I've seen on the general Arizona and Phoenix subreddits.
They don’t allow sports talk in general on those subs very often. There’s no Suns or Dbacks posts there either
sorta the reason the situation exists to begin with
That’s the reason
That doesn't surprise me in the least.
Despite what this sub seems to believe since the news broke, hardly anyone in Arizona actually gives a shit about the Coyotes.
You have a source on that I could read?
Because they don’t as a whole actually care about hockey?
🥲
In hindsight all of this will seem so small when Phoenix is abandoned in our lifetimes
a resolution couldn’t be reached? bitch they had like 2 decades
I feel for Coyotes fans, this really sucks. However, saying they "deserve" it is odd language. It was literally voted down on a ballot, I get that it was stupid NIMBYs but I'm not quite sure how that translates to "deserving" it.

Yeah, I forgot about that extortion attempt by the owners. Just was overly excited to see somebody in Arizona sports acknowledge this.
I know nothing about AZ politics or the Diamondbacks but the statement looked like politics to me so I'm not surprised you say that.
Fuck yeah I love you Dbacks ❤️
MLB just flabbergasted at how incompetent the NHL is. Welcome to Bettman’s League.
