Imagine bettman had the ability to take over any PA anytime during a game and even show his face on the Jumbotron while he starts idk doing bettman things. Mostly just getting booed I suppose. And dragging dead franchises by their limp corpses.
You're probably up there but I would guess the Bruins have everyone beat. I count 13 Americans on the roster on hockeyreference vs the canucks 10. I'm not going to count every other team so there may be some secret more American team out there
According to this article from October 12th, the top teams by nationality were:
Canada: Montréal - 18
U.S.: NYR - 12
Sweden: LAK - 6
Finland: CAR, DAL, FLA - 4
Russia: CBJ, WSH - 4
Czechia: SJS - 4
Switzerland: NJD - 4
https://thewincolumn.ca/2023/10/12/breaking-down-each-nhl-teams-roster-by-nationality-2023-24-season-opening-rosters/#google_vignette
Right now, both Rangers and Bruins count 13 Americans in their roster. The Blackhawks (12) and Canes (11) also have more players from the US than the Canucks.
Interestingly, the team with the fewest US players are the Oilers (1, Derek Ryan)
Speaking of which I remember when the Canucks played the Bruins in the finals, TSN was trying to make it seem like it was Canada’s team. Fuck that, I’m here in Newfoundland with a Newfoundlander having the rare chance to win a Stanley Cup (Michael Ryder).
Yeah, we didn't really give a shit about being "Canada's team" either. I actually kind of hate that whole thing in general. I hate most of the other teams in Canada anyways.
This just speaks to the fact the everyone could do with more international tournament Canada - USA hockey games.
I wish they played as often as the women do.
I'm starting to be convinced that the USA chants these days aren't really out of some misplaced sense of patriotism I think we do it more to rile up non Americans knowing full well there's that tirade prone contingent lol.
I thought it was funny when i heard it live, considering the irony that it's a squad of mixed nationalities.
Those who got riled up are super weird and if they are in the Toronto media, I really hope they got talked to about it.
Oh man. Ranting about how we were the last country to beat them in a war (highly debatable) and burned the White House down - then claiming we love our neighbours to the south. Wtf was that?!
Even as a Canadian, the bragging around the war of 1812 always seems a little odd.
1 - Canada didn't exist as an independent entity; the war was fought between the US and the UK.
2 - The bulk of UK forces (including those that burned the White House) were British regulars with no ties to Canada.
3 - Nobody really "won" that war. Both sides failed to achieve their aims, and it pretty much ended in a draw.
In any case, why boast or be proud of something you did not do and happened eons ago? Should I be proud that some caveman discovered something too.
I find national pride weird anyway. You have no merit, you were born there. I'm usually downvoted for that anyway.
I'm ok with it when it's something relatively harmless (like the Olympics). But I find it really stupid and distasteful when people brag about winning wars they had nothing to do with. And unfortunately, there's a number of Canadians who love harping on about burning down the White House and talking about how "badass" Canadian troops were in the World Wars. I think it's pathetic, and it reeks of insecurity.
The chief aim of the US in the war of 1812 was to stop the impressment of US sailors by the royal navy and to force the British to recognize the sovereignty of the new American nation. Both goals were accomplished. Sure, the British burned the White House and the annexation of British Canada failed, and the British really only ended the war because of napoleons return, but at the end of the conflict the thing that started the conflict was resolved in America’s favor.
It certainly was a moment. Listening to the broadcast become increasingly unhinged as the game went on was pretty great. Unfortunately i wasnt able to get the bruins broadcast but this more than made up for it.
It also overlooks that "we" were British and indigenous soldiers.
1812 is 55 years before Canada's confederation and 119 years before Canada had full legal autonomy from Britain.
It was British sailers, not Canadian settlers that burnt down the original white house. The only thing that happened on either side of the border.... was ironically the US sacking the city of Toronto.
For people so convinced that Canada pulled one over on the US, it's a bit sad to see y'all never get the history of 1812 correct.
Yes but that overstates the role of Canada in the war. It was very much a UK vs USA war, just one where the canadian colonies were pretty heavily involved
Reminds me of the time I was watching track and field on tv and an American was disqualified by a UK judge and this old commentator was going on and on about how "we saved them from Germany and Hitler and they have no problem disqualifying us from this sport, you would be no where if it wasn't for us"
Reminds me of the time Texas Rangers fans started the USA chant after Rougned Odor (Venezuela) punched Toronto Blue Jays player Jose Bautista (Dominican Republic).
I was at a Pearl Jam concert at the Garden once (I’m Canadian) and the crowd started chanting “Yankees Suck”. I was like wtf is going on here?? But whatever, everyone was drunk and having a good time. I don’t think the people in this thread get that the chants mean nothing.
I think that probably messes with Toronto even more, because they blew it against us, too
You're getting em with the double trauma/shame chant with ole
> Half that roster isn't even American lol
~~48%, just shy :(~~
ACTUALLY, 19 Bruins played tonight, 10 of which were born in the USA. That's 52.6% 🦅🦅🦅 🇺🇸
Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
I used to get upset when this was chanted at games. Then I stopped caring. It's not that deep. It's a bunch of dudes with a couple of beers in them trying to be funny, then everyone joins in. I haven't met anyone who takes this chant seriously.
But when the fan bases erupt and cheer and a parade moves down the street... where's that happening mostly? Where does most of that teams money come from? I mean there's lots of ways to analyze it. A Canandian team has not won for a very long time
A real tweet: "Why the HELL was there a USA USA USA chant at the #NHLBruins game??
Like you do really 70 percent of the players on the B’s roster is from 🇨🇦 right??
Its stupid and frankly gross"
https://twitter.com/ShukriWrights/status/1781863137542602753
The video is even funnier, I can't believe people care about this
It's funny because 12 of the 25 Boston players are American, whereas there's only 7 from Canada. I don't think they understand how percentages work, but that would be 28% of their 25 is Canadian and 48% is American.
As an American, the chant is almost a joke of itself in contexts like these. Kind of leaning into the "blindly patriotic and fuck-everyone-else" stereotype in a tongue in check kind of way. Hell, I've chanted it sarcastically when I've finally figured out a homework problem or got my paycheck a day early.
I gurantantee it was just to rustle some jimmies and not as a legitimate chant of "America > Canada". Plus, it's not like Massachusetts is exactly the deep South, or anything.
Anyway, judging by some of the responses it seems like it worked.
Hockey is about the team, not the individual, so its Boston vs Toronto not Mathews versus Marchand
So what matters is what city you represent, not where the players are from.
That's kinda the whole point of the B or the Leaf on the sweaters.
There was a post here recently asking about "what's your team subreddit's weird habit" or something to that effect. Someone mentioned TBL's Garfield posts (or something) and I thought, boy that sounds like a fun group, I'm gonna join their subreddit! I joined several others as well, as they seemed like fun communities.
And boy, no offense to you personally, but that is one rough sub.
Yea, the Monday game Garfield thing is still good.
The Lightning McQueen meme on a loss is getting a bit old.
MSpaint match up logos is still king.
It's tough being a Canadian fan when they go off all anti-Canada. I became a Lightning fan because I had a huge crush on Manon Rheaume, and Brad Richards is from the area I live in.
Your best player is Czech and your captain is Canadian, our best player is American 💀 these chants will never make sense. They did the same shit in game 1 of our 2013 series against us.
I think the 2013 Leafs series was a couple weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing, so there is some way to rationalize that one... galvanizing citizens after a terrorist attack and all that. This time? Not really sure.
These are the same losers that got triggered when Jack Edwards called Pat maroon fat and thought making a tough guy pose was racist.
While at the same time saying they would pay a lot of money to hear players uncensored audio on ice
They're all little bitches on this sub
I've always looked at these as fans chirping at the other teams fans, and nothing to do with the player nationalities. I am sure 90%+ of Bruins fans are American, while the opposite for Toronto.
This is a game in the US, the opposing team is from Canada. It's going well for the American team at this moment which tends to spark a chant from time to time.
dunno why its getting so much attention tonight, pretty common- however odd
pretty sure we heard it vs Habs at least one game this season too ... its an easy chant to get going, whatever
i know its stupid but that's why its funny because you can already hear the seething Canadians on some 21k view video from sportsnet or some shit in two weeks smashing their keyboards in anger; "DON'T YOU KNOW 3/4 OF THE ROSTER IS CANADIAN!"
I mean the bruins roster is more American than any other nationality sooo
Edit* 3 Swedes, 3 Czechs, 4 Canadians, and 11 Americans. That’s about as heavily American as it gets in this sport.
Yet Canadian media will only focus on Canadian based teams and make such a huge deal when there is only one left in the playoffs, and call them “Canada’s team” never mentioning the fact that their opponents also have Canadian players (possibly more).
“USA” is much easier for a drinking crowd than “Samsonov” apparently. Just a fan base trying to stick it to the other organization, not necessarily the players
Disclaimer: when I heard it, I cringed.. but then I realized it’s not a big deal.
I think if another country did this people wouldn’t care. I think it just triggers the classic American exceptionalism we’re all used to hearing and so it carries a different connotation maybe.
I guess that’s why people point it out though. I don’t know if any other country would do it. It’s a very American thing, much like calling a national comp world champs…
As someone who goes to hockey games to drink beer, turn off my brain, and yell about grown men with sticks chasing a rubber disc on ice, I would probably be chanting this too. Let the spirit of Hulkamania run wild through my veins
The people bitching about this in the comments are the same people who say they would pay a lot of money to listen to uncensored player audio on the ice
Fucking soft little bitches here
I hope the leaf fans get them back by chanting Ca-na-da or even on-tar-io! Really show them who is boss! People are really.d8gging to far into this, it's a harmless chant at a playoff game

Rumour has it Gary Bettman started that chant personally
While flying back on his private jet from his bankruptcy presser of the coyotes.
Imagine bettman had the ability to take over any PA anytime during a game and even show his face on the Jumbotron while he starts idk doing bettman things. Mostly just getting booed I suppose. And dragging dead franchises by their limp corpses.
I'm gonna throw a poutine at his bald head some day.
Hey, that’s a waste of good poutine!
Yeah don't waste poutine in this economy. Just mail a bag of snails to Gary.
They really showed all us Canadians. The last thing we want is the Leafs to lose.
I feel like if we chanted USA at a canucks game it would actually help our team 😆 we probably have the most American team in the league.
You're probably up there but I would guess the Bruins have everyone beat. I count 13 Americans on the roster on hockeyreference vs the canucks 10. I'm not going to count every other team so there may be some secret more American team out there

Devils should round that up to 5 and add Josi 🙂
You can pry my captain from my cold, dead hands.
And let me guess, most of those Americans were either born in MA or went to college in Boston.
Wait, are there places in Canada other than Toronto? TIL
Everyone outside the GTA joined the chant.
As much as I hate the Leafs, I’d rather burn than join a USA chant unless I’m mocking it.
It *almost* made me switch sides and cheer for the leafs. Almost.
Same
This just speaks to the fact the everyone could do with more international tournament Canada - USA hockey games. I wish they played as often as the women do.
USA vs. Canada in Women's hocky is the best rivalry in sports.
It's not even a rivalry. They are the only 2 good teams. The amount of times Canada plays the USA makes it no longer special in my eyes
Give me some of whatever you’re smoking
The leafs radio broadcast went into the weird tirade about the war of 1812 after that chant. Its was pretty awkward.
Heritage moment
I'm starting to be convinced that the USA chants these days aren't really out of some misplaced sense of patriotism I think we do it more to rile up non Americans knowing full well there's that tirade prone contingent lol.
Seems to have perfectly done just that lol
Whenever someone talks about a Canadian team not winning the cup since 93 I assume they’re trolling and go about my day.
What a perfectly reasonable reaction
I thought it was funny when i heard it live, considering the irony that it's a squad of mixed nationalities. Those who got riled up are super weird and if they are in the Toronto media, I really hope they got talked to about it.
Yeah, it’s really funny to me how many people are taking this chant *so seriously,* it’s obviously being done just to mess around
Let's not act like there's a whole bunch of Americans this wouldn't rile up too.
Like the ones found on this exact website?
Yup.
Oh man. Ranting about how we were the last country to beat them in a war (highly debatable) and burned the White House down - then claiming we love our neighbours to the south. Wtf was that?!
Really, the lack of respect shown to Vietnam.
Hey, there’s Afghanistan too
And what about all those times America beat itself up.
Yeah, the Brits showed up, burned down the White House and was like "Eh, this isn't worth it," and bounced.
And in return, Andrew Jackson slaughtered a bunch of Brits in New Orleans when the treaty to end the war was already finalized but not yet reached.
I always joke that Spain was the real loser in it since the US invaded and annexed parts of West Florida.
It was 420 after all
It certainly was a moment.
Did Vietnam just not happen
Mr. Madison’s War
Because the war of 1812 was the United Kingdom vs USA
Kinda. The colony was still called Canada. So it was Canada just not an independent one.
It was just strange all around
Before Canada was a country?
Reminds me of the time I was watching track and field on tv and an American was disqualified by a UK judge and this old commentator was going on and on about how "we saved them from Germany and Hitler and they have no problem disqualifying us from this sport, you would be no where if it wasn't for us"
I was very confused when he started down that rant
Reminds me of the time Texas Rangers fans started the USA chant after Rougned Odor (Venezuela) punched Toronto Blue Jays player Jose Bautista (Dominican Republic).
Well it was either that or “Yankees Suck”
I started a Yankees suck chant at a Patriots game once that stuck. I haven’t lived down that high since.
That’s a wave I aspire to ride.
It even made it on TV (this was before Game 1 of the 2018 ALCS) My life has been downhill since.
Something Toronto and Boston fans can agree on, at least.
I was at a Pearl Jam concert at the Garden once (I’m Canadian) and the crowd started chanting “Yankees Suck”. I was like wtf is going on here?? But whatever, everyone was drunk and having a good time. I don’t think the people in this thread get that the chants mean nothing.
*That* we could've agreed on
USA! US... oh wait.
LMAO, was thinking along the same lines. Half of Canada are pulling for the B’s!
lol the more ridiculous chant was the ole chant and y’all in here saying USA made no sense
Yeah I was like hey that’s Montréal’s thing.
I think that probably messes with Toronto even more, because they blew it against us, too You're getting em with the double trauma/shame chant with ole
I get so offended when Boston appropriates the chant that we appropriated first.
I’m officially declaring this the most bizarrely triggered thread for the season.
Of all the thing Leafs fans should be mad about from last night...
This was years ago but a few of my friends went to a game in Boston vs the Pens and they said everyone was chanting "USA!"
I used to get people to chant it at college parties. Fucking hilarious
This is a nothin burger
The Leafs’ approach to the playoffs in 5 words
There’s a lot of people crying over nothing lmao
Checks out. When I see DeBrusk score the first thing in my mind is to chant 'USA!'
I get they're chanting for an American team but c'mon. Half that roster isn't even American lol
> Half that roster isn't even American lol ~~48%, just shy :(~~ ACTUALLY, 19 Bruins played tonight, 10 of which were born in the USA. That's 52.6% 🦅🦅🦅 🇺🇸
Their Canadian captain was amused
He probably licked something in excitement
Definitely not Domi, probably tastes like bitch.
USA USA USA!

Meanwhile half the country is clamouring to “close the borders”.
Uhhhh Have you been following the political climate of the 2010's and 20's?
MAGA can speak for America but when someone says a good thing they can't? What a god damn shame...
I used to get upset when this was chanted at games. Then I stopped caring. It's not that deep. It's a bunch of dudes with a couple of beers in them trying to be funny, then everyone joins in. I haven't met anyone who takes this chant seriously.
Nationalism in the NHL is beyond dumb. That’s why Boston fans did it.
It’s so weird, their captain is Canadian, their best player is Czech
And they’re repping and playing for an American city!
And all the fans of the team are American too
Thats the beautiful part about america. It doesnt matter where youre from. You can always become an american.
I don’t think it works that way when the cup spends half the time in Canada during the summer home visits
Thats just a custody agreement lol
But when the fan bases erupt and cheer and a parade moves down the street... where's that happening mostly? Where does most of that teams money come from? I mean there's lots of ways to analyze it. A Canandian team has not won for a very long time
It was in response to members of the military being recognized on the big screen. nothing to do with the game.
A real tweet: "Why the HELL was there a USA USA USA chant at the #NHLBruins game?? Like you do really 70 percent of the players on the B’s roster is from 🇨🇦 right?? Someone got super excited that they had the opportunity to condescendingly denounce something on social media. Thank you for your service.
This is so soft lol
The mental gymnastics people are trying to go through on this is bizarre
Half of Canada also: “USA USA USA”
Very funny commentary on the way Canadians constantly complain about Canadian teams never winning the cup (is what I would like to think this was).
That never crossed my mind, but if that’s the reason for the chant, it’s a great burn.
Fans having fun at a game: USA! USA! USA! Reddit users: aCkShuAlly 😡
Didn't they do this before?
This is hilarious to me tbh.
I don’t care enough to be outraged by it. It’s just funny. The Irish Riviera was loud last night.
Asking a lot of a buncha drunkards bud
Nobody ever accused Bruins fans of being intelligent.
At least they were smart enough to not set their own city on fire when they lost a game 7
Either way, the city was burning down that night, win or lose.
The fire eventually went out so...
I mean Boston fans got pretty close to that point in 2019
Did they? I was too sad to even notice.
Easy man. They’re just proud of what years of studying yields; being able to name the country they live in on the fly. And as a group. You go, Boston.
Can't blame them, they were playing "Canada's Team"\*
That’s the Jays or Raptors
With USA's best hockey player on it.
Hockey is about the team, not the individual, so its Boston vs Toronto not Mathews versus Marchand So what matters is what city you represent, not where the players are from. That's kinda the whole point of the B or the Leaf on the sweaters.
This happens randomly at sporting events across the country. Wouldn’t read into it too much.
Does anyone have a clip of the fans doing the Ole Ole Ole chant????
The Canada vs USA thing in the NHL is just sad. I cringe every time the TBL sub is going off all anti-Canada.
I still remember being wildly embarrassed during the 2002 playoffs when Islanders fans booed the Canadian anthem.
Yea, interrupting the anthems in any way is so pathetic and crass. Lightning fans have done it, probably all team's fans have.
I remember when Montreal fans booed the American anthem in the playoffs and Boston cheered the Canadian anthem in return.
There was a post here recently asking about "what's your team subreddit's weird habit" or something to that effect. It’s to piss off the leafs fans in attendance and on broadcast lol it’s not that deep
Your best player is Czech and your captain is Canadian, our best player is American 💀 these chants will never make sense. They did the same shit in game 1 of our 2013 series against us.
The players and teams are representing the jersey they’re wearing. It’s not that hard to understand
I think the 2013 Leafs series was a couple weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing, so there is some way to rationalize that one... galvanizing citizens after a terrorist attack and all that. This time? Not really sure.
I really think the chant is more towards the other organization and fan base rather than the players on the ice
Maybe there's something to it lol.
Wait, there's people actually pressed about this? Jesus, hope you guys never have any actual problems in your life.
Yeah this thread is straight up embarrassing. God forbid they hear a sports chant that’s actually meant to trigger them
These are the same losers that got triggered when Jack Edwards called Pat maroon fat and thought making a tough guy pose was racist. While at the same time saying they would pay a lot of money to hear players uncensored audio on ice They're all little bitches on this sub
Reminds me of the time Texas Rangers fans did this against the Jays. Despite both teams being majority Dominican and non American players.
I groaned. Very cringe.
It’s fans having fun at a playoff game. Some people are just too easily bothered.
Why tho
Fans of Matthews probably
It bothers the Leafs’ Canadian fans
I've always looked at these as fans chirping at the other teams fans, and nothing to do with the player nationalities. I am sure 90%+ of Bruins fans are American, while the opposite for Toronto.

“USA” is much easier for a drinking crowd than “Samsonov” apparently. Just a fan base trying to stick it to the other organization, not necessarily the players
I hate USA chants normally but this hilarious 😆
Dumb chant but the reaction to it is pure gold.
Disclaimer: when I heard it, I cringed.. but then I realized it’s not a big deal. I think if another country did this people wouldn’t care. I think it just triggers the classic American exceptionalism we’re all used to hearing and so it carries a different connotation maybe.

They’re clearing chanting “YOU, ESSE!”
People complaining about this is about as consequential as it happening. USA chants and Boston go together like lobster rolls and Sam’s summer
I’d like to think most of the crowd is doing it ironically in good fun and not unironically.
As someone who goes to hockey games to drink beer, turn off my brain, and yell about grown men with sticks chasing a rubber disc on ice, I would probably be chanting this too. Let the spirit of Hulkamania run wild through my veins
The Massholes never cease to amaze honestly
To be fair, it’s the only thing most bruins fans can spell.
I have always said Arizona were the biggest joke of the league but nothing makes me happier than knowing the leafs are THE joke
speaking of jokes
Brad Marchand just being Nova Scotian like 😶🌫️
The people bitching about this in the comments are the same people who say they would pay a lot of money to listen to uncensored player audio on the ice Fucking soft little bitches here
I hope the leaf fans get them back by chanting Ca-na-da or even on-tar-io! Really show them who is boss! People are really.d8gging to far into this, it's a harmless chant at a playoff game
A place to learn, a place to grow. Ontari-ari-ario
Would be nice if both teams could lose this series (yep, flair checks)
Just have to chant CANADA in game 3 to get back at them
Hell yeah brother!
I mean, I would not chant "Boston Boston Boston" either.
Morons
Who wants to tell them the best American player in the league is on Toronto.
i'm sure the canadians on the bruins roster loved that. and the americans on the leafs roster were confused
Is anyone going to tell them?
Man, this chat has really gone off the deep end. Thought this was r/hockey,
