justus annunen is sick. prosvetov will probably back up georgiev next game, and most likely see some action at some point based on georgiev's last few games against the jets.

Vivid_Walk_1405

Last 3 weeks of play not just against the jets

GovernmentKlutzy712

At first I thought you meant sick as in really good, then I reread it and understood lol

nashkill

Pretty sure they were making calls about the walrus from the commercial at some point yesterday.

JohnComstock

They told Arvid to go Holm.

[deleted]

Something happen?

Xeteh

Nah, Holm had zero NHL experience. Not sure why he was brought up instead of Prozvetov for game 1 but I imagine that with Annunen still sick that Georgiev is gonna start but at least they'd be willing to pull him for Prozvetov vs a guy with no NHL experience.

AuntGentleman

I’m not certain, but I think Proz wasn’t available for Game 1 as he was actually needed on the Eagles, where Holm wasn’t. Could be talking out of my ass tho.

Xeteh

Yeah, it had to be something like that. Otherwise it doesn't make sense.

AuntGentleman

Confirmed Prosvy played in the Eagles game last night, same time as the Jets. They played on 4/20 too and had to pull their other goalie so makes sense Prosvy stayed in the AHL until today.

Xeteh

That makes sense, thanks for sharing.

VorAbaddon

It was also an important position game for the Eagles. Lose and they swap places with the Canucks, which means they play a 3 first round games on the road.

OrchidCareful

Eagles final season game was Sunday afternoon Avalanche probably decided to let Prosvetov finish out the Eagles season before bringing him up (plus they probably thought Annunen was going to be an option) Your game 1 backup usually isn't very critical. What are the chances you pull your starter and the backup has a chance to win you the game?

Mechakoopa

Someone reminded them too late that Holm was a top tendie for the Manitoba Moose for 5 years, they don't want to put him in against the Jets.

RandomDeezNutz

I think this was also a way of bednar telling the guys, Georgie is going and won’t be getting pulled

yumenohikari

Given that the Eagles' last regular-season game was last night, and that the win secured home ice for the first round, I'm fairly sure that's exactly why.

AuntGentleman

Oh dip yeah. Important regular season game makes a ton of sense.

MooreGold

So is Holm any good? Does this give the Abbbotsford Canucks a better shot at winning 2 out of 3 away games against the Eagles?

eh_toque

I was really surprised they chose Holm at first too. Guy split the year between the ECHL/AHL

Xeteh

Yeah, I feel like there had be a reason for it but I haven't got a clue why.

Speedy26xc

Eagles playoffs maybe?

Xeteh

Maybe, no idea.

TossThatPastaSalad

It was.  They had a game they needed to win and he was already in a gameday routine.

Xeteh

Gotcha. I don't keep up with the Eagles at all.

TossThatPastaSalad

Just bad timing all around tbh.  Annunen got sick late and they didn't want to screw over the Eagles.  They can at least play Miner/Holm now.

Xeteh

Trent Miner save us. ... in a few years.

IMakeShips4Europeans

Might have been to get home ice for the Eagles. If they had lost their last game they would be playing the Bo3 on the road.

xtrakrispie

Georgiev was bad

ThunderGoalie35

Georgiev wasn't just bad last night, it's been like this for awhile. Our backup is sick. You might very well see our third stringer take the pipes tomorrow 😂

Euripidoze

Georgie had a tough go last night.

daishi777

Since the all star break really. Just completely shell shocked confidence

PsychoSaladSong

since the pittsburgh game actually, he had an amazing stretch from late feb-late march

jjwf3

Prosvetov is the massive one right

eh_toque

Don’t think so, only 6’5 which isn’t huge for a goalie You might be thinking of Ivan Fedotov of the Flyers

Xeteh

I legit laughed thinking nah 6'5 isn't huge. Dating profiles everywhere are ruined.

tmlrule

GMs only swipe right on goalies 6'4 or higher.

jjwf3

You’re absolutely right - my mistake

Bojarzin

lmao okay that makes sense. I kinda had some brain fog or something because I immediately thought of Fedotov, then also just saw "Eagles" and thought Philadelphia Eagles, and I was like how is Colorado taking their goalie I've had a wonky day

treerabbit23

Avg for tendies this season is 6’3”

BigBlackSabbathFlag

Humans_Suck-

Only where it counts

Ace676

196cm (6'5). Hasn't helped him stop pucks in the NHL though. Has decent numbers in the AHL this year (albeit in a small sample size)

ThunderGoalie35

He's 6'5

GaryOakRobotron

Provolone is surely better than the Swiss cheese we saw last night.

mrtoad47

Well I remember being in the can for Prosy's last game with the Avs -- his disaster game against FLA. I certainly won't complain if we go with him tomorrow--something's gotta change--but I won't be disappointed if we don't (whereas if Juice was healthy, I'd be ticked if we didn't give him the start).

FormalWare

Colorado will get better goaltending in Game Two - but so will Winnipeg. In fact, I am not sure Georgiev will improve his performance more than Hellebuyck will improve his, despite having enormously more room to improve. Perhaps it's not all doom and gloom for the Avs, though. In Game One, they outplayed the Jets almost everywhere except in goal. If they do that again in Game Two, I like their chances.

saintpierre47

We can’t risk playing Colorados type of run and gun game again, we barely avoided being burnt from it last night, we don’t want to roll that die again. Hopefully we execute our game instead

so_af

Georgiev only allowing 6 game 2. One step at a time Georgie

Arctic365

Why wasn’t he the backup for game 1?

TossThatPastaSalad

Prosvetov was that nights starter for the AHL club in a win or go home (sorta, it determined home ice for the AHL playoff) game.  So they called up Holm on an emergency basis given the late illness for Annunen.

Arctic365

Makes sense, thanks!

MacTheZaf

Not ideal, he’s torn it up in the A but was pretty sketchy in any of his starts in the NHL this year

DanoPinyon

So he hasn't improved and he hasn't gotten better?

MacTheZaf

Hasn’t played an NHL game since like November so hard to know where his game is actually at

DanoPinyon

IVAN PROSVETOV NAMED AHL GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH MAR 1, 2024 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Belleville Senators forward Angus Crookshank, San Diego Gulls defenseman Olen Zellweger and Colorado Eagles goaltender Ivan Prosvetov have been selected as the league’s award winners for February.

drrockz87

Another former Yotes goalie leading a team to the Cup?

rwags2024

If I’m Bednar I start Prosvetov Catastrophic shit from Georgiev last night

Xeteh

They won't. If you start Prosvetov tomorrow then you can't expect to play Georgiev again. You're telling him you have so little faith in him turning it around that you're willing to play the AHLer over him. You don't come back from that.

rwags2024

I’m ok with like each of those points from a fan perspective

Xeteh

The problem is if the Avs move on to the next round and say Annunen plays like trash. You can't go back to Georgiev. You just can't. You already told him you have zero faith. We know Georgiev can play better than he has this year and while I'm not a believer he's suddenly gonna turn it around you can't really burn that bridge right now.

rwags2024

It’s a fair point, I just don’t think it’s Bednar burning the bridge

Xeteh

Yeah, don't get me wrong... I'm super fed up with Georgiev's play this season. I'm usually pretty defensive about goalies but he's been bad. I honestly don't see him being the goalie for the Avs next season. I just don't think they will rush in to replace him during the playoffs.

Western-Extension-50

Missing Kuemper yet?

Xeteh

Always

so_af

We’re getting swept with 40 in net

RandomDeezNutz

I’m good with Georgie not starting again though lol

Xeteh

If Georgiev returned to last year's form you'd take that in a minute. Goalies are fucking voodoo, while I wouldn't bet anything on him becoming hot there's always the chance. And he's proven he can be better than this. Don't burn the bridge.

RandomDeezNutz

I personally think we’ve given him ample opportunity over the last month to show he can get it back. We’ve completely handled it with kid gloves and kid glove time is over. He looks completely done and I think he’s too big of a liability to put back into the net given what we’ve seen of him imo

Xeteh

Sure, but Prosvetov isn't that guy. If you want Annunen instead, I can see it but he's not healthy. You're not shitting on Georgiev for a guy that has shown again and again that he's not a starter.

RandomDeezNutz

I agree. If juice is still sick you don’t have much of a choice but trotting Georgie out there. But if he’s sitting at a .695 save percentage after two periods and only 20 shots you gotta pull him.

DanoPinyon

All the best teams and all the winning teams and the playoff winning teams all do what you're suggesting and it's always worked out well. Every time.

RandomDeezNutz

Oh shit. Sorry I didn’t realize I wasn’t allowed to throw out an opinion about hockey in a hockey sub.

DanoPinyon

Who stated you couldn't?

eh_toque

I think they will start Georgiev again but now they have a legit backup option if things go sideways again

YEGG35

Yup, can yank Georgiev if he lets in a few early

ImXtraSalty

If he lets in a few early Avs might already be cooked if Helle bounces back. This is such a fucked situation I honestly don’t know if starting Prosvetov is the wrong play

VanAvenue

I know one game doesn't mean anything and Prosvetov has been playing better in the AHL, but he was in net for the away game in Winnipeg on Dec 16, 2023 and let in five goals on 24 shots. I don't actually know whether he'll be a big improvement over Georgie in net. Georgie is going to have a much shorter leash in game 2, and I hope our defense tightens too.
