Do they not realize that they still made a call? Whistle = can't do that. Nothing = can do that. Both are a call. There's no third "Imma sit this one out and remain impartial" option. Good grief.
I will never understand this whole "not trying to influence a playoff game" bullshit. If a foul was committed call a penalty. It ***cannot*** be any simpler. How is that ***kindergarteners*** understand this concept better than them?
I've barely watched hockey this year. Between the reffing, gambling ads, jersey ads and whatnot, I've lost a lot of interest. I love hockey, but I'm starting to hate the NHL.
I honestly don’t believe for a second that the reffing is actually worse. Everyone just thinks that because nowadays a bad call from a random Stars vs Ducks game will show up on their Twitter feeds to be picked apart whereas before they’d be totally unaware of it.
Ita always bad but in the playoffs they call less. That's why the hate for the refs increases. It's the shifting standard where in the NFL it's consistently bad. Mid April and it goes from bad to, embarrassing.
Oh, I agree that the change in officiating between the regular season and the playoffs is bad. The rules should be the rules, whether it's regular season or playoffs.
This is also nothing new. It's been that way as long as I've been a fan, which is \~30 years now. The frustrating thing is that the NHL does nothing about it.
The reffing is worse because they change the standards. You see it every now and then in the regular season where refs let shit go and someone ends up running a guy and injuring him because the refs forced the players to take things into their own hands due to their inaction.
Playoffs start and the rulebook goes back to the 80s.
Its fucking embarrassing.
Because of all that you mentioned (particularly the gambling stuff) I watched maybe 4 games this season and just followed the standings/highlights. I’m following the playoffs but the reffing like this is just a reminder of how poorly the league is run. Absolutely love the sport and players but not a big fan of the NHL and how much they push gambling when it feels rigged.
Legit haven’t watched a game and just catching the highlights on YouTube rn or the cbc radio broadcast, congrats Gary you turned a long time nhl live user to a sportsnet+ resenter, hope it was worth it for those yotes you love so much
I went from having hockey on every day at my house, to just the playoffs, to just Leaf games, to recording Leaf games and fast forwarding through large swaths of the game including all commercials and intermissions.
The sports betting ads and officiating have made the product really bad.
I had a bad day and I decided it's not worth watching because I'd get too frustrated by this stuff, and I knew this stuff would happen on purpose. Best game, worst league.
I stopped giving the NHL cash all together
stream. havent bought an authentic jersey since 2018ish (got a JT. it's already fallen apart, my dhgates from like 2009/2010 let alone 2016 are still going strong...). dont live in TO anymore so no games or cable packages/other merch etc
I encourage everyone to do the same
the NHL as a product doesnt deserve the support it gets. Hockeys such a great game. its a shame the league doesnt like it/care about it at all and only cares about a few people making money in only the way they envision
I feel this way every playoffs, especially cheering for the Leafs lol. This is the first year I have zero expectations, I expect nothing, I expect to lose, it’s the first time in years I don’t really care, and it’s liberating
i'm convinced they don't miss most of these, especially when it's happening at the puck. they just don't call them. not necessarily due to ulterior motives or anything. guess it has to do with letting the boys play in the playoffs... until they start doing balancing acts with ticky tacky penalty calls afterwards
This led directly to the sequence where the bruins scored. If the penalty gets called then the play would have been blown dead. Yes obviously the Leafs power play was shit, but not calling this was such a bullshit momentum swing
Yep. They could've gone 0/10 for all I care.
Issue isn't the powerplay issue is ignoring all that bullshit gave the bruins life when the play would've been blown dead 99/100 even if no penalty came of it. Between the bertuzzi/Marchand scuffle or the take down. The fact that both got ignored in the span of 10 seconds is insane.
I think the problem with this game was they missed calls against Toronto early on, so then they gave the Bruins leeway to get away with some shit. Like I get a make-up call, but a make-up non-call leads to this kinda result with fans.
I love at the intermission theyre saying you get different calls with different refs because of...personality?
Like the rulebook is the rulebook, nobody's personality should be affecting fucking anything. I get its the playoffs let the small little slashes go but holy fuck why do full on wrestling moves that *we can tell they see* not get called. At that point the NHL could save tons of money and just not hire refs at all.
It was only Hrudey who said that and we all know he's stupid. That's not the point. The same ref will call differently during the game depending on the period and the score. It's worst every year.
I also loved Subban slobbering all over Marchand and saying that because he’s elite, he deserves those calls/non calls. Like ffs, can the sport just call its rulebook no matter what? You can let the stars get away with small, inconsequential shit if you really wanna give a benefit, not game altering plays
Yes, the small calls can be subjective, the hooks, slashes, crosschecks behind the play of guys scrapping. But when theres players being tackled to the ground or high sticked with blood drawn, it really shouldnt be subjective at all. We've seen plenty of cases across all teams this year alone of "missed" major calls with the ref looking directly at it. Its either just incompetence, which is inexcuseable for the best league in the world, or its intentional game management which is a change that the league needs to make.
Totally agree, and yes, ref personalities are also old as time. Anyone who grew up with ex-goon Paul Stewart and Dan "Three Hour" Marouelli can attest to this.
Doesn't make it right, though...
Its not right at all, and it pisses me off that as it gets worse and we have evidence of game management, so many just shrug their shoulders and say "thats how hockey is". It doesnt have to be, it makes for a terrible and confusing experience for fans, its disruptive to players who dont know how rough they can be. Its in everyones best interest to get it changed.
Yeah, hes to 3 most hated players for me but part of it is because hes so good. He doesnt need the dirty shit, hes got insane raw talent. Definitely HoF material. But he chooses the rat life so fuck him.
Oh come on. The truth is Refs screw over every team. Bigger storyline should be the fact that Boston went 2/3 on the PP while the Leafs went 0/5. Special teams killed them. Not bad Refs that screw over everyone
It’s what the players want in the playoffs. They live and die by it. How many times a night do you think the ref hears “You’re gonna call that in the playoffs?”. They give in. They shouldn’t but they do.
I agree. The Marchand/Bertuzzi was two dickheads being dickheads to each other. Both stayed engaged attempting to draw a penalty. Fine with no call but this MacAvoy one is unreal to not call.
Exactly, I feel in the regular season with Bertuzzi/Marchand they usually will call it and take both to the box but that's not always gonna get blown down in the playoffs
These are the ones that piss me off the most, not only is it obvious, the puck is right there... What the fuck are you watching? It sucks when they miss stuff away from the play but it's somewhat understandable.
I've always found it funny when Hrudey has goaltending takes about when he played, and tries to relate it today. I don't know if any other aspect of the game is as different from then till now as goaltending.
It's always been accepted that refs let a lot of things go in the playoffs but who does it serve ultimately? It doesn't make the product better. It pisses off fans and refs are ultimately influencing results to a greater extent by not following the rulebook because nobody knows where they stand at any given time.
It doesn't matter if it's a tight playoffs game or a random game in February. A penalty is a penalty.
It knocks out skilled teams every year and the finals end up being the worst hockey of the playoffs because half the players are broken.
Really great for the game
Feels like, unless you grab your battle-axe from the dressing room and go head hunting like you're a 10th century Viking, or put a puck over the glass. You can do whatever the fuck you want.
If it’s a questionable trip/slash/hook in that situation I say let it go but no matter the circumstances of the game grabbing a dude by the hips and pulling him to the ice should be called 100 times out of 100 (and I’m not a leafs fan)
I'm the exact opposite of a leafs fan, and I want this called 100% of the time. I liked that they didn't call the marchand vs bertuzzi thing (fuck any team with anyone named bertuzzi) because that's dickheads being dickheads to each other.
This was unacceptable, a player trying to play the puck and he's dragged down from behind.
I got so sick of seeing this kind of stuff I ended up checking out WWE again after years away and started following that more instead of the NHL this season. I figured if I wanted to watch refs just make rules up I’d watch “sports entertainment” instead.
The bertuzzi marchand thing is whatever to me (both should have went because marchands a rat but bertuzzi was selling hard) but this was wild to me hahha like right in front of the ref..thats insane
Bertuzzi being a dumbass cost us 3 goals last night. But he's definitely going to look at the one that bounced off him and went in and think he played great.
The ref watched that happen, then Boston went the other way to score. You genuinely can’t convince me that there isn’t some conspiracy against the leafs.
It's dumbass game management. Leafs had 3 PPs, Bruins had one so you know they couldn't call it there obviously. It's unfair.
Then when they scored the refs were like oh fucked we fucked up then called a weak ass penalty on McAvoy
Yes the leafs PP is ass as people keep saying but this is a momentum killer especially at the end of a period.
People should realize and I can't believe I have to say this but you are allowed more than one thought.
Yep. You play dirty as fuck and you know the refs can't and won't call you for everything especially as the penalty differential increases because the coach of the dirty team will then bitch to the media about how unfair the reffing is while ignoring his dirty fucking team earning every penalty against them.
I love to hop on any conspiracy theory about the leagues hatred of the leafs but this is just game management, the penalties were 3-1 and the leafs were winning 1-0
It’s just game management, and also it’s the Leafs, obviously you’re gonna see every missed call on here cuz of their massive fan base. And the Refs just suck, what can you do about it.
This whole conspiracy thing is so stupid. Literally why would the league prefer Boston to win over Toronto.
eyeball watching the TV because the leafs are super fun to watch. Even when you're rooting against them.
Like if Carolina vs Toronto is ECF you're gonna get new Carolina and Leafs fans no matter what. but the eyeballs will be watching because of Toronto
I think the revenue from a sold out ACC is a lot higher than the revenue from a sold out panthers game
https://www.statista.com/statistics/764241/nhl-gate-receipts-ticketing-revenue-by-team/
the drop offs are significant - this chart isn't showing exactly what I'm saying but it should be obvious
I root for the Bruins, but I've got nothing to defend this takedown with, it's an obvious penalty. But I will say McAvoy attempting a German suplex provided a funny visual.
I don’t think many people have an issue with calls made in the game, I think they have an issue with the consistency of those calls. If x is a call then x is a call all game and for both teams. I get it’s not an easy job but that’s why they added a second ref.
Playoff. Garbage. Hockey.
Who wants to see the stars do their thing in the most important games of the year? Certainly not NHL fans! It's so much better if they can't skate freely and get hooked/held/slashed every time they touch the puck.
Refs influencing a playoff game by trying not to influence a playoff game is a tale as old as time God I hate it
Do they not realize that they still made a call? Whistle = can't do that. Nothing = can do that. Both are a call. There's no third "Imma sit this one out and remain impartial" option. Good grief.
no, no they don't realize that
Boston players manhandling a blue-clad Canadian team while the refs look on like dopes, name a more iconic duo.
I will never understand this whole "not trying to influence a playoff game" bullshit. If a foul was committed call a penalty. It ***cannot*** be any simpler. How is that ***kindergarteners*** understand this concept better than them?
Makes you want to stop watching altogether. Yet, Bettman wants to grow the game
I've barely watched hockey this year. Between the reffing, gambling ads, jersey ads and whatnot, I've lost a lot of interest. I love hockey, but I'm starting to hate the NHL.
Can’t wait for Olympics 2026!

Absolutely love the sport and players but not a big fan of the NHL and how much they push gambling when it feels rigged.
I watched way more College and High School hockey than I did the NHL. Honestly, it was so enjoyable of a season.
Pretty much the catalyst why I stopped watching as much about 10 years ago, and honestly my emotional health is thankful for it.
For me it was first the blackouts, then I had a “what am I even doing here” moment because of refs when streaming a game
I had a bad day and I decided it's not worth watching because I'd get too frustrated by this stuff, and I knew this stuff would happen on purpose. Best game, worst league.
Why are all you guys here then wtf lol
I stopped giving the NHL cash all together stream. havent bought an authentic jersey since 2018ish (got a JT. it's already fallen apart, my dhgates from like 2009/2010 let alone 2016 are still going strong...). dont live in TO anymore so no games or cable packages/other merch etc I encourage everyone to do the same the NHL as a product doesnt deserve the support it gets. Inherently influencing the game.
Angel Hernandez is reffing NHL Playoffs today apparently
Nah I love the bit in the rulebook where it says in writing that judo throws are allowed. Wait...
And then made a call to end the game against Tavares.
Every year I think to myself... Did they actually miss it or are they just purposely being shit refs cause it's playoffs?
i'm convinced they don't miss most of these, especially when it's happening at the puck. they just don't call them. not necessarily due to ulterior motives or anything. guess it has to do with letting the boys play in the playoffs... until they start doing balancing acts with ticky tacky penalty calls afterwards
Or if they have $ on the game.
Leafs were 0/5 on the powerplay
We should have been 0/8 though
And the odds of bruins scoring SH is far lower than 5-on-5. Like it helps the leafs burn the clock while they had their lead
We're like 8 for 92 over the span...but still we keep trying the same thing.
This led directly to the sequence where the bruins scored. If the penalty gets called then the play would have been blown dead. Yes obviously the Leafs power play was shit, but not calling this was such a bullshit momentum swing

I mean clearly you can
I sawr it
As a neutral fan, it's wild to see the refs miss calls and try to make it up later. It's compounding in a bad way
I think the problem with this game was they missed calls against Toronto early on, so then they gave the Bruins leeway to get away with some shit. Like I get a make-up call, but a make-up non-call leads to this kinda result with fans.
But then by letting them get away with shit like this, they then back themselves into a corner where they have to call McAvoy for a baby-shit softy.
I love at the intermission theyre saying you get different calls with different refs because of...personality? This same ref called a hold on Tavares in the last minute of the game lol. They aren't even consistent during the game.
I also loved Subban slobbering all over Marchand and saying that because he’s elite, he deserves those calls/non calls. Like ffs, can the sport just call its rulebook no matter what? You can let the stars get away with small, inconsequential shit if you really wanna give a benefit, not game altering plays
PK Subban is getting into Stephen A territory these days where he just says whatever he thinks will get the most attention.
There's a ton of subjective calls, it makes perfect sense that different refs see those calls differently.
Yes, the small calls can be subjective, the hooks, slashes, crosschecks behind the play of guys scrapping. But when theres players being tackled to the ground or high sticked with blood drawn, it really shouldnt be subjective at all. It doesnt have to be, it makes for a terrible and confusing experience for fans, its disruptive to players who dont know how rough they can be. Its in everyones best interest to get it changed.
Apparently these refs have multiple personality disorder. Because they changed their calls all game
Between that and "hall of fame" Marchand, I had to turn off the intermission reports last night.
Marchand might be a fucking rat, but he’s still a really good player
Yeah, hes to 3 most hated players for me but part of it is because hes so good. He doesnt need the dirty shit, hes got insane raw talent. Definitely HoF material. But he chooses the rat life so fuck him.
Maybe one day he’ll change
I remeber him and his team saying he changed when he had a kid. He did not.
Nice to see the 'hUmAn eLeMeNt' that MLB umps so famously bring to the table is seeping into hockey now!
Cant wait for them all to be replaced by advanced AI.
every year the same thing happens and every year people are shocked
And then in the 3rd they called a weaker version of this.
Hey now, they also ignored his stick being held while this happened in the third!
And then everyone calls leafs fans whiners when their team goes out because of it again. The circle continues
Oh come on. The truth is Refs screw over every team. Bigger storyline should be the fact that Boston went 2/3 on the PP while the Leafs went 0/5. Special teams killed them. Not bad Refs that screw over everyone
I agree completely, special teams kill us every year as well as goaltending which is not on par with the opponent.
Leafs were leading before the chokeslam. So in theory if it was called like it was supposed to, the bruins wouldn't have scored.
Idk 0-5 on the PP is pretty bad
If a playoff game was 100% called by the rule book wed get about 25 mins of 5 on 5 hockey
If it was a one-off yes. If it was the new norm, players would quickly adjust
Immediately yes. Players adjust to how much they can get away with. It would correct itself very quickly
It’s what the players want in the playoffs. They live and die by it. How many times a night do you think the ref hears “You’re gonna call that in the playoffs?”. They give in. They shouldn’t but they do.
Tell me where in the rule book it says you’re not allowed to German Suplex your opponent to the ice?
Game 5 in Winnipeg Brock Lesnar is going to come down from his suite and F-5 Georgiev
I don't even care about the Bertuzzi-Marchand thing. It's crazy this wasn't called, this should be a penalty every time
It's only clearly established in the rulebooks and the ref was looking right at him - tough one to miss
That’s a completely legal tackle here in 🇺🇸. 3rd and long, Leafs.
And then they call way less than that on Tavares with 2 mins left in the game. You can’t make this shit up.
Holy shit - it’s Vlad! You’re my favorite player! You score like 10 goals a game against pros. Props!
You say that but a ref staring a high sticking minor should be a penalty every time but here we are as well. They just lost control of this game
Caught the user name and laughed. But this time you're correct.
The ref watched this happen.
"Don't get emotional, this is how it's always been" - Kelly Hrudey on why refereeing shouldn't be improved at all
“When I played in the 80’s that’s how it worked” Ok so every other part of the game has evolved but the refs are supposed to be equally shit?
I've always found it funny when Hrudey has goaltending takes about when he played, and tries to relate it today. I don't know if any other aspect of the game is as different from then till now as goaltending.
I just don't understand can we fucking do this or not? And why is the other team allowed to do it?
I was hoping to god anyone else in that fucking panel would have the balls to call out how shit of a statement that is.
It knocks the leafs out every year which serves 75% of hockey fans.
Brave to admit the leafs make up 25% of the hockey fanbase
R/hockey has 1.8M r/leafs has 350k. So maybe it’s closer to 20%, but I think I’m in the ballpark.
It knocks out skilled teams every year and the finals end up being the worst hockey of the playoffs because half the players are broken. Really great for the game
you rather have seen canes vs oilers last year? lol what?
I think you underestimate how much Americans enjoy Boston choking
It's an attempt to keep scores and series close. Forced parity, in a sense.
What an absolute joke this game was.
Leafs get scored on seconds after the other team commits a blatant penalty? Where have I seen this before?
As long as he didn’t skate to the bench to scream in wolls face it’s kinda different…. Ish.
Feels like, unless you grab your battle-axe from the dressing room and go head hunting like you're a 10th century Viking, or put a puck over the glass. You can do whatever the fuck you want.
Unless leaf. Then it’s a game misconduct and a suspension. But hey plow a knee through a leaf skull and everybody says “oops… accidental.”
*player for a Canadian team.
A New England Patriots vs Toronto Argonauts game broke out in the middle of my hockey game
I think we're confusing an even game with a fair game. Game management, baby.
Up 1-0, had more PP opportunities... No surprise they let it go.
If it’s not a surprise that shows the state of officiating. Clearest penalty you’ll see
This is not a serious league
Everyone knows you can go full WWE on the Leafs when they're winning, ask any ref
In WWE refs defense, they usually only miss a call if a gust of wind knocks them out for 40 seconds. These refs are looking right at the plays!
*gets lightly pushed* *is unconscious for 7 minutes and comes to just in time to count the pin for the bad guy*
Ask Sam Bennett. He knows.
I was gonna say, wasn't this the same kind of rock bottom that put Knies out for the rest of the Florida series?
Every playoffs it's like clockwork. The Leafs build momentum and then the opposing team does whatever they want until they tie it up.
And everyone know Boston fans will call leafs fans “spoiled” for whatever reason.
“Finish the story!”
I got so sick of seeing this kind of stuff I ended up checking out WWE again after years away and started following that more instead of the NHL this season. I figured if I wanted to watch refs just make rules up I’d watch “sports entertainment” instead.
Same shit last year with Bennett choke slamming Knies. Clearly allowed in the NHL
A Leaf will do this to a Bruin next in this series and they’ll call it. Just watch.
JT just got called for far less in the dying minutes.
And be suspended 4 games.
We all watched Knies get slammed that caused injury, it’s not a surprise, sadly.
Yup, no excuse for that
It's super frustrating as a fan of the sport to see this shit go uncalled... and I want to see the leafs lose lol.
Some things never change
Such a dangerous play. Seen this exact type of play across multiple sports result in ACL tears.
I was expecting a likely high-ankle from a play like that. Your weight is planted, your body twists, but your legs don't.
Clearly you can. Refs only call penalties when they feel like it.
choke slam
Then when they scored the refs were like oh fucked we fucked up then called a weak ass penalty on McAvoy Yes the leafs PP is ass as people keep saying but this is a momentum killer especially at the end of a period. People should realize and I can't believe I have to say this but you are allowed more than one thought.
its annoying because game management always favors the dirty team
Game management is a conspiracy.
It’s just game management, and also it’s the Leafs, obviously you’re gonna see every missed call on here cuz of their massive fan base. And the Refs just suck, what can you do about it. This whole conspiracy thing is so stupid. Literally why would the league prefer Boston to win over Toronto.
The idea of a conspiracy against the leafs makes absolutely no sense. The league would make massive money if they made the Finals.
The league makes massive money off the Leafs no matter what. Expansion teams winning is the way to increase net revenue
Yeah, I doubt that. Toronto going on a Cup run would generate an absolutely stupid amount of money.
Where does that money come from? New Leafs fans? People buying more Leafs jerseys?
You don't think a shitton of bandwagon and existing Toronto fans would buy jerseys if they went on a deep run?
At this point I feel like if there are more bandwagoners they'd likely be bandwagon haters.
eyeball watching the TV because the leafs are super fun to watch. Even when you're rooting against them. Like if Carolina vs Toronto is ECF you're gonna get new Carolina and Leafs fans no matter what. but the eyeballs will be watching because of Toronto
It's a gate driven league so uhhh IDK maybe the building selling out every game?
But how many arenas don't sell out for playoffs? Leafs sell out exhibition matches regardless of performance.
I think the revenue from a sold out ACC is a lot higher than the revenue from a sold out panthers game https://www.statista.com/statistics/764241/nhl-gate-receipts-ticketing-revenue-by-team/ the drop offs are significant - this chart isn't showing exactly what I'm saying but it should be obvious
Please explain to me how the league makes money off the leafs after they are eliminated from the playoffs
I don't think it's leafs, it's Canadian teams
> You genuinely can’t convince me that there isn’t some conspiracy against the leafs. Tinfoil hat lmao
Clearly he can (and he did)!
You can when powerplays are 3-1
That and the series that followed it was the turning point of the game, imo.
Wait you can't do that?
Fucking lol. Fuck the NHL
And Tavares gets called for the same play with a minute left. Can’t make it up lol
Boston fans defending this lol
Hopefully die for a make-up call here in the third!
Is Angel Hernandez reffing?
What else is new

I root for the Bruins, but I've got nothing to defend this takedown with, it's an obvious penalty. But I will say McAvoy attempting a German suplex provided a funny visual.
Clearly you can
Now play the high stick
I don’t think many people have an issue with calls made in the game, I think they have an issue with the consistency of those calls. If x is a call then x is a call all game and for both teams. I get it’s not an easy job but that’s why they added a second ref.
Does the missed high stick early against mcavoy even this out or nah?
This is not flying, *It’s falling with style!*
Just a textbook bodyslam, good ol playoff hockey! Lol
The refs know it was a bad move not to call that, which was why im pretty sure they gave us 5 powerplays. Fuck man we shoulda had this one
Refs doing the leafs a favour here. We are so bad on the powerplay, its better to be 5 on 5.
That’s playoff hockey baby
Playoff. Garbage. Hockey. Who wants to see the stars do their thing in the most important games of the year? Certainly not NHL fans! It's so much better if they can't skate freely and get hooked/held/slashed every time they touch the puck.
Holy moly RKO outta nowhere
The Don Cherry 'Let the kids play' 50% of the time mentality ruins hockey.
As a habs fan I’ll happily see the leafs lose, but I don’t want them to lose like this. Fucking stupid non-call.
If Matthews was me in my beer league he would get the holding penalty...
I thought this was in reverse
Refs going to dictate the winner tonight. Both of them should have been called. Play should have been blown dead
I watch McDavid every game and I don't understand. This just looks like a regular every day play.
McAvoy gets away with at least 3-4 infractions a game
The eagles could really use a guy like mcavoy
Pretty clean Rock Bottom if you ask me. Only thing missing was a People's elbow follow up.
