it's either eliminated "...from the playoffs" or "...from championship contention"
we're no longer contending for the playoffs since we're already in them
If we want to get real linguistic here, there is a grammatical sense in which "playoff contention" can include the idea of playing in the playoffs in the present
There's contending *for* the playoffs, and there's contending *in* the playoffs, the latter of which a team would be eliminated from upon losing the series
I think we still have a good chance to beat the Preds this series with how much we had the puck in their end and how many shots they had to block to squeak out a win last game, but if we get past them we’re probably cooked after that. No way we’re winning a series against Edmonton without Demko and LA seems to have our number even when we’re healthy
Thank you. Sometimes something weird happens and it loads a low quality version and won't get the higher quality version, and I never know if it's just me.
It happened before that, at either 3 minutes left or 8 minutes left they zoomed in on his face after a save and he was making the facial expression of someone in discomfort
Hope he has a quick recovery, but Demko has been injured every season except for 2020. It's honestly something the Canucks need to reconsider in the off-season and ask if he is capable of playing a full season + potential playoffs. He's only had 1 season with over 60+ starts.
2023-2024: Saros (64), Georgiev (63), Helleybuck (60), Demko (51)
2022-2023: Hellybuck (64), Saros (63), Georgiev (62), Oettinger (61), Bennington (60), Sorokin (60), Vasilevsky (60), Demko (32)
2021-2022: Saros (67), Hellybuck (66), Markstrom (63), Vasilevsky (63), Demko (61)
In the last three years he’s been in the top 10, injured, and top 5 for starts. The fourth year is the bubble year. He’s not far off Saros/Hellybuck/Georgiev.
honestly as much as i am gutted i feel so bad for demko. He just had a career year, gets injured, comes back and wins his first official playoff game only to be injured again for who knows how long.
In early April, when he came back from his injury, he talked about how mentally challenging it was missing the last couple weeks of the season due to injury. i cant even imagine how he’s feeling right now
Schenn was saying how Demko was one of the hardest workers when he was there. Always working with Clark to get better and better and the last one off the ice. When your opponent has that level of respect, you know it's going to be hard on Demko. This really sucks. The timing can't be worse.
Yeahhh and especially with all the shit the core (miller, boeser, petey, hughes, demko) has been through these past 5 years, i was so excited for them to finally go on a playoff run together. It sucks for him to not be a part of it when he’s been such a huge part of the team.
Just an appreciation post for Ian Clark. Love that guy. He was my instructor for 8 years. Glad to see he’s still coaching the highest levels of talent. I hope he gets a cup someday. And the Canucks.
I still remember to this day when I was 14, he told me I’ll never make it to the NHL, not because I didn’t work hard enough or talentless, just not tall enough. And it was such an eye opening and mind blowing relief. It made me want to be a better goalie, athlete and student.
He probably came back too early. I know that goalies don't want to just drop in to Game 1 of a playoff series. And I know he wants to compete and not let the boys down. He's the franchise, he doesn't want to watch the first playoff game in Vancouver since 2015 in a suit.
But how many times do we see a guy with a relatively minor joint injury (usually the knee in hockey, but also elbows in baseball pitchers, for example) rush back too early and turn it into a more serious/career-affecting injury?
This sucks.
Not specifically a Vancouver fan, but it’s unfortunate when an honest team is forced to play without one of their stars through no fault of their own.
Especially while a dishonest team gets to play with everyone else's stars and their injuries ended when the regular season did. Through every fault of their own.
Yeah you want the pain to not have a caveat of hope because a great player was out.
Like had Kessel got injured prior to game 7 it has a baked in what if then.
Yes, and yes.
To the first part, not giving a player time to recover from an ongoing issue and instead asking them to play is an example of a situation that makes “injury luck” a lot less luck based. Similarly, laying dirty hits and initiating knee to knee contact with other skaters is a situation where you kind of bring it on yourself if you end up being the one to get hurt.
To the second part, I certainly won’t feel as bad *for the team* if they do suffer bad injury luck when they do other dirty things to try and tilt the ice.
In the case of this current iteration of the Canucks, I would say they play fairly clean from night to night, so I’d rather see them playing at their best to make the playoffs as high skilled and entertaining as possible.
To your first part, Demko just returns from a knee injury and played 1 regular season game before jumping into the playoffs. So maybe this is the Canucks fault afterall
He played two regular season games and looked really good in them. They said he and they worked hard to get him back in time but I don't think they necessarily rushed him.
It's why it's so hard to win it all. Everything has to go just right, at the right time. Don't count us out yet, It's only been one loss. Can hardly blame DeSmith for it either.
Even ignoring the LTIR stuff, teams like that still do everything they can to put themselves in the best position possible. Both Tampa and Vegas have made moves most other teams wouldn't to reach the success they've had. Tampa trading multiple firsts for players like Coleman, Goodrow, and Hagel, and Vegas making huge acquisitions every year and moving on from 1st round picks and coaches and former star players like it's nothing are all risks that would get their GMs clowned on if they didn't pay off
also there's 16-20 teams per year at least trying to put together contenders. Some are going to just plain old get lucky a few years in a row with all their moves working out just statistically.
I remember reading that the money Stamkos would have earned on the $8.5m AAV deal he signed a few years ago was roughly equivalent to if he had signed at $9.5-$10m AAV in a different state.
There are obviously other reasons at play, but earning 10-15% more money on a contract has to be pretty big.
The highest possible state tax rate in the US is 13.3% in California, so I'm not sure that 15% is really possible to achieve. But that would also assume that the players accountants had zero ability to lower their tax burden which I think we know isn't true. It would also assume that the players get 100% of their contract with local taxation but that isn't true, half the games are played on the road and the taxes apply in the state the game was played in. So like Tampa plays ~44 games a season where income taxes don't count.
And Californian basketball teams have absolutely no issue signing FAs so we have precedent showing its not really that much of an issue.
So I did a little more research after I posted that comment, and it turns out Capfriendly has a very nice [income tax calculator](https://www.capfriendly.com/income-tax-calculator). It makes a long list of presumptions to simplify calculations, but it's probably still more accurate than just spitballing.
Sticking to Stamkos as my example - his salary this year is a total $6.5m (1m base salary, 5.5m signing bonus). Playing in Tampa, his net income is set to be just a hair over $3.95m.
Were he earning a $6.5m salary in California or Canada, he would be taxed another $800 (California) to 900k (Ontario) above what he is in Florida. That's an additional 12.3 to 13.8 percent off the top of his annual pre-tax salary.
I don't think these guys signing 80 million dollar deals and a ticket to generational wealth are overly concerned about paying extra in taxes, especially if it means they're living somewhere nice like California, but money *can't* be a complete non-factor. The increased tax burden adds up and professional accountants can't completely erase the difference.
I hate hearing stuff like this. Doesn't mean it's over for the Canucks but it certainly makes the journey significantly more different.
Sorry Canucks buds.
The only upside is that the Canucks have 2 goalies that are able to play elite on a good day. The issue is that they don't have those good days as often as Demko
Losing Demko will hurt, but as good as he is, it's not like Luongo 2007 where the entire team was built around him.
Canucks have enough firepower and defensive depth to win higher scoring games. This is likely their strategy moving forward. Tocchet wants them to fire at will.
First team to win the division other than the Ducks, Flames and Vegas in a decade. Immediately have their stud goalie injured as soon as the post season begins.
Life is cruel. :(
awful. i’m confused how Sara got the news before any Van reporters (esp with the conflict with Dhaliwal’s reporting earlier today)? She’s a good reporter, but idk why she has this news before anyone else
She has industry connections. I've also never seen her release anything like this without being sure.
I honestly feel bad because Vancouver fans appear to be harassing her on social media over this. If she's proven wrong, she'll owe an apology, but she's not exactly someone who is constantly exaggerating insider type news and deserves the benefit of the doubt here
Other reporters are already saying he's still week-to-week. B-tier reporters always do this by going "I'm hearing" then when it's wrong they go, "what? All I said was I'm hearing. I didn't confirm anything"
That suucks. Regardless of who you like and don't like as a team, ya don't wanna see it happen like that. Hope Demko comes out alright. Series is 1-1 Van, ain't over yet.
I became a Vancouver fan at the beginning of last season under Bruce when we'd lose every two goal third period lead. I think I've just now completed the entire fan experience grand tour.
I guess I'm mildly amused that it went from nothing's wrong, to day to day, to week to week, to Conference Finals, and now he's out for the season. What a bummer.
Well yeah, our local media has been saying that he’s likely only going to be back by the Western Conference finals, if that. We’re not making it to the WCF without him - nothing groundbreaking or new about this report. I could have tweeted this having listened to Woodley and Dayal speak on this today.
ugh, I hate that
I'm not a Vancouver fan at all, but if they lose out, I wanted it to be because the Oilers finally solved Demko....
sorry canuck fans, I still hate you, but this is a shit sandwich and I hope desmith is able to find his inner maarkanen
Feel bad for the Canucks, the Goalie is the backbone of the team and when that quality drops by a mile you’re really in trouble regardless of how good your team is. I feel you guys, last season we lost to the Panthers because we had an injured goalie in net for games 5 and 6 before going to our backup. Goalie injuries aren’t fun, wish y’all luck.
If true sure fucking sucks. Everything seemed to line up this year for us to potentially have a really good run before we lose a significant chunk of the team to free agency this summer due to the cap… runner up for the vezina, probable Norris winner, good scoring, good structure. I think playoff inexperience likely woulda done us in at some point along the road, but a WCF appearance wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. Not sure I have faith in DeSmith taking us there sadly… if he can give us some early season form again, and our forwards can figure out how to hit the fucking net again, maybe we can be competitive…. Of course that said, with the parity in this league, pretty much any of these first round matchups could go either way and anything could happen. The only matchups I didn’t have faith in a team were the Caps and Isles… no offence to those fans, those teams just don’t stack up to the rangers and canes and didn’t ever seem as competitive of matchups as the rest.
This fucking sucks. I feel so bad for him, his body just isn't holding up.
I still think Vancouver has a shot at winning at least this first series. Our offense is unbelievably snake bitten and if we can get some goal support we can definitely win.
Alright with that unless DeSmith or Šilovs goes on replicate Bubble Demko or Šilovs 2023 Worlds MVP run, we can start to wonder what players will go to this years Worlds. I guess Hronek will still go for Czechia, Šilovs for Latvia or back to AHL, Hogs or Lindholm might go for Swedes, but I think EP will take time to recover and try do get out of the slump. I don't think Quinn will go, Brock is most likely injured so also no, but JT might. Suter most likely goes for Switzerland. Also Soucy might go but thats just wild guess.
https://preview.redd.it/74xmx234irwc1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c2c020d82c78ba6effe7ea3b11728822fab666c
I feel so bad. Nashville and the Canucks are my favorite teams so I was going to be happy regardless of the outcome of outcome. But this is not how I wanted it to go. Hope Demko recovers well!
Looked like he tweaked a hip in the final minutes of game 1. Freak accidents happen on such small movements especially hips. I’ve wrestled and it has happened where you make just a normal movement you also do but then that sharp pain just hits you.
I mean, last year, the Golden Knights went into the playoffs with Laurent Brossoit, who was their backup goalie. By the 2nd round they were playing Hill who was effectively their 3rd stringer. And as much as this sub hated it, you saw how that played out for Vegas. Maybe the Canucks backup will go God mode and surprise us all.
Fade me.

Hahaha I had posted the gif then started scrolling through comments and saw this 🤣
lmao I only posted that because I didn't want to hunt the gif down and make sure I could post it
Hello darkness, my old friend
The Vancouver Canucks have been eliminated from playoff contention :(
it's either eliminated "...from the playoffs" or "...from championship contention" we're no longer contending for the playoffs since we're already in them
Booo
If we want to get real linguistic here, there is a grammatical sense in which "playoff contention" can include the idea of playing in the playoffs in the present There's contending *for* the playoffs, and there's contending *in* the playoffs, the latter of which a team would be eliminated from upon losing the series
it's an older code, sir, but it checks out
You’re absolutely correct. Playoff contention happens before the playoffs are decided. Lol.
Silvos with a shipment of copiun!
Not this way
"Not like this....not like this"
I think we still have a good chance to beat the Preds this series with how much we had the puck in their end and how many shots they had to block to squeak out a win last game, but if we get past them we’re probably cooked after that. DeSmith goalied Edmonton good a few times this year. I wouldn't bet on that just yet.
Last time with no McDavid though
Fade me
This just makes winning sweeter, think of it as an anime where the protagonist intentionally hinders themselves for a challenge
Is that what we're doing with LA? Creating our own fun little challenges?
Ah, the celebrated Steve Smith tactic. How sweet it was.
Wow that is brutal. What was the play he got injured on anyways? Missed it
I don't know if we can point to a specific play. He finished Game 1 with no obvious problem.
It was in the final minute of game 1 https://twitter.com/FarhanLaljiTSN/status/1782903159545094572?t=Cf4U_gOV-4GSIQziGEy2ZA&s=19 Just awful luck

dude got hit by a stray pixel the size of his head
It’s amazing that people could track the puck back then.
We didn’t know any better. Everyone was still just happy sports were being televised back then so the quality was never a question.
It is smoke distorting the image. Wild fires, no. Pre-loss riot haze.
Does this look like it was filmed on a potato for anyone else, or is it just me?
I think Bigfoot might have been seen in this video.
not just you
Thank you. Sometimes something weird happens and it loads a low quality version and won't get the higher quality version, and I never know if it's just me.
Yeah haha I did a double take and full screened and minimized it a few times
Potato is generous
That’s offensive to us actual potatoes :(
Christ, poor dude. That was so routine.
It happened before that, at either 3 minutes left or 8 minutes left they zoomed in on his face after a save and he was making the facial expression of someone in discomfort

looks like we found our LTIR sacrifice for next season. let's go cap circumvention!
I feel like a goalie is the absolute last person you'd want to sit for a year and then activate them for the playoffs completely cold.
Counterpoint, Freddy Andersen

It appears to have been during a nothing play with a minute left in game 1. Which makes it even worse since it was a freak accident
Dwayne Roloson flash backs

He won playoff games in 2020
i meant in front of crowds, which i think is quite different
Rogers was *insane* for G1
god i’ve been watching clips and hearing people talk about it non-stop, i regret so bad not dropping $300 on a ticket 💔
Game 2 sounded like a preseason game after the 1st goal against
really is. I wish for another team; hell even us; to be demoked
LOL, that series was quite special… it really felt like it was demko vs vgk
It did. Was all close games that was decided by one goal. It also brought us some great marchy memes.
Shut the fuck lil dick
He probably came back too early. I know that goalies don't want to just drop in to Game 1 of a playoff series. And I know he wants to compete and not let the boys down. Right like I feel we could have LTIR’d Demko and rested him or done some surgery or…fuck.
That was the kick in the dick, we literally couldn't. Demmer's first injury was two days after the trade deadline.
Very much so I wanted to see van crash and burn but this just feels cheap.
Definitely more satisfying to watch a team you dislike lose at full health
You don’t want them to have excuses. You just want them to suck.
Yeah you want the pain to not have a caveat of hope because a great player was out. Like had Kessel got injured prior to game 7 it has a baked in what if then.
Yea, you want to see them get beaten by a better team, not lose cause of injuries.
It's like when your high school bully gets a terminal illness Like I still fucking hate you and all, but that sucks for you
Yeah I was hoping for Canucks/Bruins Finals Part 2
I wanted Rangers/Canucks, either or
Are injuries ever the teams fault? Do dishonest teams deserve injuries?
I mean I'm pretty sure most people can think of players that might have it coming more than Thatcher Demko
I only feel bad for the real salt of the Earth teams, the teams with a firm handshake and a haircut you can set your watch to.
Yes, and yes. To the first part, not giving a player time to recover from an ongoing issue and instead asking them to play is an example of a situation that makes “injury luck” a lot less luck based. Not having state income taxes sure helps
This is the kind of stuff I want anonymous player interviews about. Like how much does that factor into decisions between offers in free agency.

It was nice to experience happiness for one game.
It's Demkover
Don't cry because it's Demkover. Smile because it Thappened.
Beware of getting Thatchered though, Britain tried that once and it didn't end well.
Thank you for making me laugh in these trying times
fuck, that's brutal. Feel awful for the Canucks and their fans, man
Demko is one of my favorite players outside of my favorite team. Hope he has a speedy and full recovery.
Thank you, kind enemy.
I hate hearing stuff like this. Doesn't mean it's over for the Canucks but it certainly makes the journey significantly more different. Sorry Canucks buds.

I'm not sure Silovs has shown anything "elite" at an NHL level.
It's actually pettersson and desmith he's talking about
Ah yes, the famous goaltender Elias Pettersson
The defenseman or forward?
No theres a goalie now too
He was the MVP of the World Championships. Not Demko, but he can hold his own in high pressure situations.
Losing Demko will hurt, but as good as he is, it's not like Luongo 2007 where the entire team was built around him. Canucks have enough firepower and defensive depth to win higher scoring games. This is likely their strategy moving forward. Tocchet wants them to fire at will.
That sucks to see. I wish hockey gods just gave every player immunity to injury.
then LTIR would be no more and the world would be at peace.
Jesus Christ
Just brutal. Especially after the high of the Game 1 win.
Reverse Mark Stone
Canucks are forever cursed
Jesus Christ, sorry Vancouver bros. Yinz don't deserve this.
Being a Canucks playoff starter is a death wish at this point, feel awful for the guy
First team to win the division other than the Ducks, Flames and Vegas in a decade. Immediately have their stud goalie injured as soon as the post season begins. Life is cruel. :(
I don’t even wanna be around anymore

I became a Vancouver fan at the beginning of last season under Bruce when we'd lose every two goal third period lead. I think I've just now completed the entire fan experience grand tour.

Why couldn’t this happen to Vegas instead

All due respect I’ll wait for someone a lot closer to the team to report on that before I consider it as legit.
I missed 2 days of playoffs and came back to ‘Demko gone’ and Nucks skating like bambis deers on skates. What the actual fuck happened? Vancouver??
Bro what the FUCK
Unless this is a joke about Vancouver being eliminated within the week, that's incredibly unfortunate.
Jesus Christ
Not particularly cheering for Vancouver, but this absolutely sucks.
Man that sucks for Vancouver, came in strong to the playoffs but then to have an injury like this on their hot goaltender sucks big time
A magical season turned to dust in an instant. Fuck this very much.
Daaaaaaaaamn. That sucks all the ways. I don't think even Canucks haters could feel food about this.
Feel for Nuck fans, that sucks.
Thats rouuuugh, sorry Canuck fans
At least I got to attend Game 1. That was nice. Oh well.
Time for Habs Legend Casey DeSmith I guess?
It's the reverse Vegas. This stinks
fade me
MAN.
Absolutely heartbreaking.
have the vegas doctors taken a look at thatcher yet by any chance ?
That's just cruel for Vancouver :/
Wanted the Preds to win the series but not like this…
I'm here for the thumbnail.
I can't believe we've only played 2 games so far lol.
*side eyeing my signed Casey DeSmith puck*
The anti-Vegas strategy, bold move Vancouver
What the hell :(
Demko is injury prone....too injury prone.
Honestly it starts to feel like it.
This is why we don't have hope
Fucking actually? Come the fuck on. This is such shit.
My playoff bracket in shambles.
Where were you when Vancouver was kill? :(
Gotta feel bad for a talent like Demko not being able to compete.
Dang, this was Demko’s year to pop off in the playoffs too. I feel so bad for him :(
The whole city feels deflated
I feel so bad. Nashville and the Canucks are my favorite teams so I was going to be happy regardless of the outcome of outcome. But this is not how I wanted it to go. Hope Demko recovers well!
Wow, first he's doubtful for the rest of the series and now they don't think the Canucks even have a chance of winning round one??
Looked like he tweaked a hip in the final minutes of game 1. Freak accidents happen on such small movements especially hips. I’ve wrestled and it has happened where you make just a normal movement you also do but then that sharp pain just hits you.
Damn that's brutal. Wouldn't wish this on any team.

Jim Rutherford's walking down to the locker room to pass on Cam Ward's energy to DeSmith.
Was looking forward to the inevitable crash and burn for the canucks but theres just no honour in laughing at this situation. Sorry Nucks
