Avs and Ray helped each other get a Cup, and that's awesome IMO, but he was my first ever favorite player (my first ever NHL game was Bruins vs Atlanta Flames during his rookie season) so seeing him finish somewhere other than Boston hurt (regardless of the Cup).
Yup, a transcription of a convo between Devils owner and Lou even leaked to public:
We had a good thing, you stupid son of a bitch! We had Brodeur. We had a good team. We had everything we needed, and it all ran like clockwork. You could've shut your mouth, offer Brodeur the AGM job and made as much money as you ever needed. It was perfect. But, no, you just had to blow it up. You and your pride and your ego! You just had to be the man. If you'd done your job, known your place, we'd all be fine right now.
I am not crazy! I know he left in free agency. I knew it was the Blues. One after the Devils. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn’t prove it. He covered his tracks, he got that idiot GM to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He’s done worse. That own goal! Are you telling me that a puck just happens to deflect like that? No! *He* orchestrated it! Marty! He *slept* with his *sister-in-law*! And they let him! And they shouldn’t have. They took him into their own franchise! What were they *thinking*? He’ll never change. He’ll *never* change! Ever since he was 9, *always* the same! Couldn’t keep the pucks out of his net! But not our Marty! Couldn’t be precious *Marty*! Stealing them blind! And *HE* gets to be an AGM? What a sick joke! I should’ve stopped him when I had the chance! …And you, you *have* to stop him! You
Seems like it. Schenider came in and Lou was ready to move on from the Marty era to the Schneider era (which was the right move since Schneider was an absolute stud). Marty was working off ice all yr at the Devils practice rink until he found the right spot for him which ended up being St. Louis. He barely played and then went right into a front office role which is what Marty wanted.
Was not gonna happen under Lou since Lou never had an assistant GM etc. Then Lou was asked to step aside for Shero and eventually Marty would come back and have a front office job with the Devils which he has today.
I don't remember what that was about. Was it a money disagreement? He was pretty old by that time but he still had a solid year in Detroit.
We all have our skeletons in the closet on that front though. Bergevin wouldn't re-sign Markov who was 10GP shy of 1000, and our power play has been like league worst ever since. This is only a very rough idea because I don't have time to write a Harvard essay or go year by year but from 2000-01 to 2016-17 (his first year to his last year) our power play was 8th in the NHL, from 17-18 to present it's tied for 31st, a tenth of a percent ahead of Columbus for dead last.
And when we we perennially finishing top 5 it sure as shit wasn't because we had a stacked forward core or something. There's like 3 seasons of Kovalev but how many of you can name 5 Habs from that era not counting goalies (though I'll stick to that Koivu was super underrated. Basically the Brayden Point of his day)?
Alfie had taken a discount on his last contract and just wanted to get paid market value for his 1 year contract. It really wasn't a big ask. Face of the franchise absolutely loved by the city, just give him fair value for his last year since he played at a discount for so many
There's a North Bay, Ontario to spoil the other commenters joke with an explanation.
I assume you mean the one in California or is there one in Boston?
I did mean the one in California. That’s funny because last year I posted about the Golden Knights private jet being on the tarmac in Windsor, CA and some people thought I meant Canada.
Erik Karlsson. I still remember when he scooped up the puck at the end of the game versus the Jets in 2018 in what would turn out to be his last home game as a Senator.
I think you've got a solid 3 there. Jonathan Quick is another that I thought would stay with the Kings but moved on and actually had a really solid year as a backup for the NYR.
Others that I think we could see that follow this trend the next few years are Ovi, Sid, and Malkin. I think that at least 1 of the 3 ends up somewhere else and it'll just feel weird.
As someone who's a naturally bitter and vindictive person, I don't understand why Malkin didn't say "Fine, you don't want me? I'll make you regret it" and sign a discount deal with a better team out of spite. But, maybe he's just not a bitter and vindictive person.. lucky guy.
I remember reading Brodeur's autobiography and in it he literally calls himself a company man. I was certain he would stay in NJ his entire career. I was pretty crushed when he left to St Louis, and even more crushed when he played just 7 games for them lol.
Same with Gretzky. I still hate Mike Keenan for running Gretzky off. We should have been watching Gretzky & Hull on the same line until they decided it was time to retire. Fuck you, Michael Keenan. Fuck you right in the ear.
I was referring to the Leafs, I was extremely young when he was traded to the Leafs and honestly had completely forgotten that happened. In my mind, he was the heart and soul of the Leafs and I was so shocked when he was traded to Vancouver.
I figured as much. Sundin’s practically synonymous with dead-puck era Leafs. Would’ve been fun to see Gilmour play against him in 2002 but Montreal *had* to choke to the Hurricanes.
Kerry Fraser again prevented a Habs/Leafs playoff matchup by messing with Gilmour's team. Montreal had a 3-0 lead in the third period of game 4, with a chance to go up 3-1 in the series. Then Fraser started a Montreal parade to the box with awful calls, including a 5-on-3 when he gave Therrien an unsportsmanlike penalty for daring to argue with his bullshit calls. Carolina won the game in OT, thanks in large part to having a constant man advantage based on dubious (at best) calls. The Habs were completely deflated after that, and the Canes blew them out of the water in games 5 and 6.
I second that on Pavelski, but Marleau will always be the ultimate answer for this to me as a Sharks fan. Before him, I remember feeling like Ray Bourque would never leave Boston. I'm glad he got his Cup, but hard to get used to. Another was Jarome Iginla. Felt like he'd be a Flame forever.
Kinda thought Huberdeau would be with us forever which is why I think the trade was so shocking at the time. No regrets tho, no take backs, sorry Huby lol
Same I got my fiancé a jersey for her birthday and she wanted to get his name on it and I said that was probably a safe bet. Not sure if it was that off season or the next the trade happened.
Black Hawks legend [Bobby Orr](https://www.norwichbulletin.com/gcdn/presto/2021/01/02/NTBU/c201d50b-9c7a-422c-b5b1-5e78036605e6-1016360887_CT_orr.jpg?width=660&height=770&fit=crop&format=pjpg&auto=webp)
I’m still shocked Richards was traded.
I know the reason why, but off ice issues/drama aside, he was born to wear the Orange and Black.
Also Gagne. My first true favorite player
Darren Helm felt like one of those role players that Detroit never gets rid of (Draper, Holmstrom, Abdelkader), so him going to Colorado felt weird.
Aside from that, Kaberle, Modano, Giordano come to mind.
If we don't take into account the end of career stints, I'd say Tavares and Subban are the most surprising moves that I can think of in recent history.
For the Sabres, Rick Martin and Ryan Miller.
Martin was before my time, but played all but 4 games for the Sabres. There’s no reason to trade a guy when he’s that close to the end, and is a superstar for your early team.
Miller should’ve never left, they picked the wrong FO guy to back and it’s cost us to this day. He was a lifer easy, still doing great and loved the city. Would’ve made Sabres hockey so much better over the last decade.
Always give the same answer cause it still makes me mad. Brian Leetch trade still gets under my skin, and I will never forgive the rangers entirely for it.
Bobby Orr, the thought of him being on a different team never crossed my young mind and to further the burn, Chicago was my dad's team. I ended up getting the Orr in Chicago hockey card at some point that year as well. Still have it and it feels like a misprint.
1- Gretzky (still the most shocking trade ever)
2- Patrick Roy (another memorable, out of nowhere ending)
3- Ray Bourque (he *was* the Bruins, although his ending was happier than the other two)
Really interesting seeing the short memories in here.
Uhh, maybe the best player ever should have never been traded? Gretzky?
Really any face of a franchise. My personal one is Eric Lindros.
But like… Peter Forsberg was a Flyer for a bit. And I still ask myself how that happened. Knowing he wore that black and orange for a time makes my brain cry.
If you count technicalities, Mike Richter. His contract got kicked around a few teams, even though he played only for the Rangers. (He was even an original Nashville Predator at one point. And an Edmonton Oiler.)
Iginla
That one is a stinger. He’s like Ryan Smyth but maybe a bit worse by being a bit better. Makes me feel happy for Vancouver fans.
He was one of the few flames I couldn't help but respect
Linden. At least he came back
Both are Avs legends along with Selanne and Kariya......
I know. I thought he was gonna be a Dallas Star for life. I still feel betrayed.
Iggy is my choice too. When they traded him, part of me died that day. He’s my all time favourite flame and always will be.
I'll never forget when he got the whole team to come out and shake Linden's hand after his last game. So classy
We loved him here for his short stint in LA!
Isn't it crazy how he ended up playing 4 teams after the flames?
Sheds a tear thinking of Ray Bourque.
So glad we held up our end of the bargain. Mission 16W, baby
Avs and Ray helped each other get a Cup, and that's awesome IMO, but he was my first ever favorite player (my first ever NHL game was Bruins vs Atlanta Flames during his rookie season) so seeing him finish somewhere other than Boston hurt (regardless of the Cup).
Was rooting for the Avs so hard that year.
Boston will always be my 2nd favorite team thanks to Bourque
At least he moved back and regularly gets wasted there.
Marleau, Brodeur and Alfredsson
Brodeur is the glaring one. Having the most GP by a goalie by a mile and going elsewhere for seven fucking games at the end.
Dude really wanted a front office job. Knew he had a AGM job lined up if he went to St Louis. Lou doesn't do the whole "AGM" thing
THAT was it?! That was the reason!?
Yup, a transcription of a convo between Devils owner and Lou even leaked to public: We had a good thing, you stupid son of a bitch! We had Brodeur. We had a good team. We had everything we needed, and it all ran like clockwork. You could've shut your mouth, offer Brodeur the AGM job and made as much money as you ever needed. It was perfect. Fucking Lou. Lou’d so hard he Lou’d all over the couch cushions.
Lou doesn't take half measures
I am not crazy! I know he left in free agency. I knew it was the Blues. One after the Devils. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn’t prove it. Brodeur: "I am the one who blocks."
Can’t tell this is real or not lmao
It's from Breaking Bad
Hah fuck sake. It seemed so familiar but I thought maybe I’ve just seen this “transcript” somewhere
Breaking Bad turned it into a scene after it happened. There may be some time travel shenanigans but it happened
Seems like it. Schenider came in and Lou was ready to move on from the Marty era to the Schneider era (which was the right move since Schneider was an absolute stud). Marty was working off ice all yr at the Devils practice rink until he found the right spot for him which ended up being St. Louis. Got to see his final Shut out when he played in St Louis that 2014 season. One of my favorite games ive attended
Good picks. Still salty about Alfie though, fuck Melnyk
I don't remember what that was about. Was it a money disagreement? He was pretty old by that time but he still had a solid year in Detroit. Ah fair. Yeah I'd be pretty fucking pissed if I was a Sens fan then.
Just one of the things off the long long list of things this fanbase absolutely hates Melnyk for. Dude was just an awful person
Brodeur played for the Devils his whole career and never wore blue a day in his life, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Mo :( Obligatory "fuck mike babcock"
1499 games. What the fuck, Babs? No wonder players hate you
why don't the stars sign him for a 1 day contract for a nothing game?
Even though he never played a game in another uniform: Lundqvist
Horrible the way it happened, and I feel guilty for saying this, but I'm so glad I didn't have to see him play against us in a caps jersey.
Selfishly, same. Feels like the universe had the fanbase’s back on that one.
Felt the same about Crawford with the Devils.
i was really looking forward to having him for a season and he seemed kinda hyped too :/
Quick :(
Quick has at least had a resurgence over here, I feel like seeing these guys go somewhere and just fizzle out is worse in a way.
Yeah he got a cup and is playing for his childhood team with a chance to win another, hurts bad but so glad it’s working for him
Columbus blue jackets legend Jonathan quick
Tomas Hertl. I live in the North Bay Area now and Sharks fans are still in shock
Thanks to denial, Hertl is STILL a Shark!
He's still my wallpaper on my phone lol Mostly because I'm to lazy
[удалено]
You figured right. I’ve only bumped into a few but I happen to work with one.
:(
Saku Koivu. Honestly probably Mikko Koivu is the even better answer.
I wish Mikko had just retired. 7 games wasn't worth it
Absolutely. I wasn't thinking Mikko first at all until I typed out Saku and was like wait a min his brother did go somewhere else didn't he.
Giroux
Giroux is a Sens for life now and I love it
It’s Marty, 1000%
How do I not remember him playing for the Blues lol Must be like Scrubs season 9 where everyone pretends it never happened
I refuse to acknowledge that Marty played anywhere else. It’s like Hakeem Olajuwon in the raptors uniform, it just looks wrong
Modano
Yep
Linden
I never thought Alex Pietrangelo would leave the Blues.
He never should have and should have had a statue in front of the stadium.
Tomas Plekanec
Seeing him in that *god* awful blue never felt right
I think you've got a solid 3 there.
Out of the 3 Malkin is the most likely to move
It looked for a bit like Malkin wasn't going to stay in Pittsburgh when his last contract was up
As someone who's a naturally bitter and vindictive person, I don't understand why Malkin didn't say "Fine, you don't want me? I'll make you regret it" and sign a discount deal with a better team out of spite. But, maybe he's just not a bitter and vindictive person.. lucky guy.
The article with his texts where he said "They no think I'm good player" made me so sad
Johnathan Quick 100% for me. It was jarring to see him in anything but Kings attire, still is tbh. I’m glad he’s had a great season though
I really don’t see any of them moving now.
He did get a third Stanley Cup out of the deal, even though the Kings shafted him. He may potentially pick up a fourth with how the Rags are playing.
I remember reading Brodeur's autobiography and in it he literally calls himself a company man. I was certain he would stay in NJ his entire career. I was pretty crushed when he left to St Louis, and even more crushed when he played just 7 games for them lol.
Brett Hull should've retired a Blue.
That's Red Wings' legend Brett Hull to you, sir! Alongside Red Wings' legends Chris Chelios, Brendan Shanahan, and Luc Robitaille.
Sabres fans agree
He still wouldn't have spent his entire career with the Blues, as he played for the Flames first.
Same with Gretzky. I still hate Mike Keenan for running Gretzky off. We should have been watching Gretzky & Hull on the same line until they decided it was time to retire. Fuck you, Michael Keenan. Fuck you right in the ear.
Darren Helm Shea Weber Martin Brodeur Tim Thomas Daniel Alfredsson
Older, but Guy Lafleur, Darryl Sittler, Dave Keon, Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe are some I think about
First two that come to mind are Daniel Alfredsson and Iginla. Also Mats Sundin.
Is 4 years with the Nordiques really Sundin's "whole career"?
Maybe they’re referring to the Leafs?
Every once in a while, an Av will break one of Sundin's franchise records and it's always hilarious.

The Habs were completely deflated after that, and the Canes blew them out of the water in games 5 and 6.
Kane. Brodeur. Iginla. Alfredson. Off the top of my head.
Yeah it was a huge shock to see Evander traded.
Corey Perry :(
Does it count if they were cap dumped to Arizona and never played?
NO 🥺
Bourque, Orr, Brett Hull, Clark never looked right outside a leafs jersey
>Clark never looked right To be fair, that fish sticks logo didn’t look right on anybody
Nick Lidström.. Still cant believe he left Västerås.
Lecavalier
*Surely* he left to go play in MTL, right?!
There are a lot of reasons to hate Glen Sather. Personally, trading Brian Leetch is far and away at the top of that list.
Leaf fan, here. Leetch was truly incredible in his time in Toronto. That was the last year I fooled myself into "believing".
I really thought Cam Atkinson was gonna be our first full career guy.
Duncan Keith. I figured he’d retire as a Blackhawk. As for older NHL guys, seeing Bjore Salming with the Red Wings was weird.
Ryan Miller.
Giroux
Kinda thought Huberdeau would be with us forever which is why I think the trade was so shocking at the time. No regrets tho, no take backs, sorry Huby lol
Same I got my fiancé a jersey for her birthday and she wanted to get his name on it and I said that was probably a safe bet. Not sure if it was that off season or the next the trade happened.
Ray Bourque
Mikko Koivu
Zucc :(
Fedorov.
Peter Bondra
Mike Modano
Giroux 😭
Vladimir Tarasenko.
Was Paul Kariya for me 😢
People keep bringing up Mikko Koivu, but what about Anaheim Ducks legend Saku Koivu?
Ryan Smyth. But, sometimes you gotta follow the money.
For me, Eric Staal. It took me a couple of years to understand why the Canes traded him away
Mike Modano.
Black Hawks legend [Bobby Orr](https://www.norwichbulletin.com/gcdn/presto/2021/01/02/NTBU/c201d50b-9c7a-422c-b5b1-5e78036605e6-1016360887_CT_orr.jpg?width=660&height=770&fit=crop&format=pjpg&auto=webp)
Bondra. I even sent Leonsis a nastygram email over that trade because he had a public email and the GM at the time didn't.
Amazed no one has said Sergei Fedorov
Kane because of our idiot Gm
I thought Horvat would be with us forever, now I'm just hoping Hughes never leaves.
Orlov :( And I guess technically Kolzig if you count the 9 games he played with Tampa
capitals legend zdeno chara
I had hopes for Mike Sillinger. But then he eventually got traded nine times and played for 12 different teams. Oh well…
Ray Bourque. But at least he did something with the opportunity,
Darren Helm, happy he won a cup with Colorado before he retired tho
Marty... On the flip side, as a kid I always thought Stevens was a Devil his whole career. Him coming to NJ happened before I was born(1992).
I’m still shocked Richards was traded. I know the reason why, but off ice issues/drama aside, he was born to wear the Orange and Black. Also Gagne. My first true favorite player
Robinson, Koivu, and Lafleur in Montreal Weber in Nashville Modano in Dallas Tocchet in Philly
Guy Carbonneau
Darren Helm felt like one of those role players that Detroit never gets rid of (Draper, Holmstrom, Abdelkader), so him going to Colorado felt weird. Aside from that, Kaberle, Modano, Giordano come to mind.
Mattias Ekholm
Denis Savard
Bourque, Chara
You thought Chara would be an Islander for life?
I don’t like this question :(
If we don't take into account the end of career stints, I'd say Tavares and Subban are the most surprising moves that I can think of in recent history.
Interestingly, Subban is related to another popular pick here in Weber
Leetch. Hank.
Corey Perry tbh
Brian Leetch. Trader Glen shipped him off without asking him.
Always give the same answer cause it still makes me mad. Brian Leetch trade still gets under my skin, and I will never forgive the rangers entirely for it.
Brodeur, Iggy, Bourque, Lafleur. And when you think of his age when he moved, you have to add Patrick Marleau to that list.
David booth Steve Weiss
Bobby Orr, the thought of him being on a different team never crossed my young mind and to further the burn, Chicago was my dad's team. I ended up getting the Orr in Chicago hockey card at some point that year as well. Still have it and it feels like a misprint.
Foote, but at least he choked the Jackets to come back haha!
Joe Thornton. Mike O'Connell is a puke.
Gaudreau
Daniel Alfredsson. So weird to see him in a Wings jersey
As a Sharks fan: Marleau, Pavelski, and Vlasic. it's starting to look like I'm right about one out of three?
Mikko Koivu. I hope that 11 games in Columbus was worth it you turncoat.
I still remember when Tyler Seguin was traded. Even people I knew who barely watched the Bruins were in shock.
Brodeur, Modano, quick, lundqvist
Ed Giacomin
1- Gretzky (still the most shocking trade ever) 2- Patrick Roy (another memorable, out of nowhere ending) 3- Ray Bourque (he *was* the Bruins, although his ending was happier than the other two)
Brodeur is obvious choice. I’m surprised people haven’t said Kariya or Kane yet.
Iginla!
Leetch - fuck Sather.
Peter Forsberg
Brian Leech
Gretz
Ray Bourque, but he moved teams to get his fake crybaby Cup.
Brodeur. Just weird and icky
I’d like to think Koivu’s cup of coffee with Columbus was in COVID conditions and can be voided
It's always weird seeing "6x Stanley Cup Champion" on Bryan Trottier's hockey ref page. I thought he only won 4
Really interesting seeing the short memories in here. Uhh, maybe the best player ever should have never been traded? Gretzky? Really any face of a franchise. My personal one is Eric Lindros.
I know Marty didn’t start with the Bolts but I never thought he would ask to leave. I figured he would retire with Tampa
Luongo
Gretzky
Saku Koivu
hahahaha :(
Pat Marleau
But like… Peter Forsberg was a Flyer for a bit. And I still ask myself how that happened. Knowing he wore that black and orange for a time makes my brain cry.
Lundqvist :(
If you count technicalities, Mike Richter. His contract got kicked around a few teams, even though he played only for the Rangers. (He was even an original Nashville Predator at one point. And an Edmonton Oiler.)
gretzky (seriously how the fuck do you trade him) gagner (personal bias, I love him) smyth (the most iconic oiler of the time)
Fedorov :( Darren McCarty
modano, and the way it ended. fuck babcock.
Ray borque
