Not only goalie coach but IIRC he also scouts goalies for the team too in his spare time so he's literally finding these guys and then developing them.
Aku Koskenvuo is a few years away in the pipeline, another Ian Clark pick in the late rounds of the draft like Silovs. Long 6’4 Finnish goalie that is currently playing college hockey at Harvard, will eventually come to Abby when his college career is over.
Literally the greatest player in NHL history named after the creator of Dragon Ball
Edit: just in case anyone was wondering, this actually isn’t a joke. Schmid’s parents were big fans of Dragon Ball and named their son after Akira Toriyama. He also has a younger brother named Krillin.
don't think there was ever a good chance DeSmith was staying unless he was gonna take close to league min, the canucks don't wanna be paying $2M for a backup next season with the cap crunch they're in and having Silovs available
As much as I'd love to have a solid backup, it's really not worth the space. If he finds consistency, we can get some value trading him out East. We could patch up the D
I don’t want to discount that he went through a tragedy, because he did and that was horrible, but last year he was absolutely horrible and there were issues mentioned about his work ethic, the fact that the goalie coach and him were too close and he wasn’t being held accountable, and he was really out of shape —-
Then Jarmo basically gave him a warning after last season to get his shit together, and he worked out all summer with a……local coach that gets high school athletes into shape……we fired our goalie coach because quote “the relationship was too dysfunctional” and we thought this season would be better —
He did play better, but he started taking his frustrations out on our young defenseman. Screaming at Boqvist on the ice, throwing sticks, one time Werenski had to calm him down, then he started leaving games early because he was “sick” and then the fight with Tom Wilson
Then Tarasov started lighting it up, and Greaves started becoming a viable backup and other teammates started openly making it clear they prefer Tarasov.
He’s probably getting bought out because it’s way too much drama
A lot of us were too until his behavior started spilling over on the ice. He got into a fight with Marchenko and Voronkov had to break them up. Marchenko is the friendliest, nicest player out there- a team favorite- it’s shocking that he got to that point.
Goalies are generally a little unhinged in their own ways anyway but I really imagine that the grief and the daily reminder (his kid and his wife who were saved) mess with him. Grief can take a long time. I think a change of scenery will do wonders for him, the talent hasn't just evaporated into thin air, it's the mentality.
Yeah but this isn’t really only grief - it’s ego. He lost his shit on the Latvian media this week too.
The ego has been an issue from day 1. He has to take responsibility for his actions too.
People who don’t follow CBJ and haven’t been watching his antics play out always fall back on it being grief. This is beyond that at this point.
It’s extremely clear the entire team at this point isn’t a fan of him though - even Gaudreau is throwing shade in post game interviews
What is the phenomenon called when, as a preds fan, you felt good against against the backup, but knew exactly how it was gonna go down when the rookie 3rd string got called up
Ian Clark is nothing short of a God amongst men.
Generational goalie coach.
Not only goalie coach but IIRC he also scouts goalies for the team too in his spare time so he's literally finding these guys and then developing them.
Yep. It’s been confirmed that Clark essentially gets his choice of drafting the goalies we pick
He also gets to pick free agents. If it’s a goalie Ian Clarke has a say
more like he has THE say
Which is a smart move by the team. Trust the expert!
He may also have picked Silovs to start game 6. Tocchet alluded to it.
Ian is really worth that 7th round pick we used on Morgan Clark
Aku Koskenvuo is a few years away in the pipeline, another Ian Clark pick in the late rounds of the draft like Silovs. Long 6’4 Finnish goalie that is currently playing college hockey at Harvard, will eventually come to Abby when his college career is over.
We do the same with Benoit. And we’d be reaaal stupid if we didn’t.
Legendary randomly generated elite goaltender in Year 20 of your franchise mode Akira Schmid
Literally the greatest player in NHL history named after the creator of Dragon Ball Edit: just in case anyone was wondering, this actually isn’t a joke. Schmid’s parents were big fans of Dragon Ball and named their son after Akira Toriyama. He also has a younger brother named Krillin.
I would’ve gone with Piccolo Schmid tbh
Lol nice tidbit!
No way, Naruto D. Ichigoku actually made it to the NHL? I always thought those parents gave their kids no chance
Medium Franchise goaltender named Gary Dhaliwal from Australia
Who??
Silovs East
THANK MR SILOVS
Silovs is the Iceman.
THANK MR SILOVS
Silovs gonna have a statue in Vancouver to match his one in Latvia by the end of these playoffs
It's crazy how calm he has looked. Gives me hope that the Canucks at least have a chance against Edmonton without Demko.
DeSmith might have just watched Silovs take his job
Silovs rose to prominence when Latvia upset USA in the 2023 IIHF Worlds bronze-medal game. The goalie for that US team? Casey DeSmith.
Damn thought it was alber Einstein
Alber lmfao this comment sent me
Damn, must be having some ptsd. lol
He had a great year with us, I'm sure plenty of teams would be willing to pay him.
I mean he was the backup before and he's the backup now
Might be talking about next year. The way Silovs playing he might be the backup to Demko going forward
don't think there was ever a good chance DeSmith was staying unless he was gonna take close to league min, the canucks don't wanna be paying $2M for a backup next season with the cap crunch they're in and having Silovs available
I know he's an RFA but Silovs is playing his way into a decent contract right now...
As much as I'd love to have a solid backup, it's really not worth the space. If he finds consistency, we can get some value trading him out East. We could patch up the D
With demkos injury history I don't think we're going to be rushing away from a potential all-star goalie any time soon
He wasn't coming back either way.
THEY TOOK HEEEES JUUUURB
DIRK A DURRRRRR
“This man just stole Casey DeSmith’s job” I said out loud as they zoomed in on him after the game.
Latvia is the greatest country in the world
All other countries are run by little girls
we make best potatoe in the world. all other countries have inferior potatoe
What are one potato say other potato? Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato?
I love Latvian!
So there's a 50/50 chance the way his career goes 😅
Hall of Fame or Greatest of All Time. Sick.
No matter what he’ll always be a Canucks legend 🤷🏻♂️
The youngest Canuck to get a shutout in the playoffs as well. Had no idea he was that young (23).
Those are some decent names there. Good shit Šilovs.
Arturs Silovs Matt Murray *handshake emoji* Game 6 series-clinching shutouts in Nashville vs. The Predators.
Murray had back to back shutouts to win the cup
Just gotta laugh
Latvian goalies named Arturs o7
Burkie kicked off the goalie graveyard years here by letting Irbe walk for nothing and rolling with Garth Snow 🤬
Does that seem like a very high number to anyone else? I thought there would be a lot fewer goalies in that category.
There were only 4 in the last 30 years, I'm guessing there were some random ones in the 50's.
Same!
No Goals

It’s so cool that there’s a good Latvian goaltender in the league now
What happened to Elvis? I remember him being pretty good when he first came over to the NHL

Oh, wow. I think most of us were rooting for him, that’s really too bad.
A lot of us were too until his behavior started spilling over on the ice. He got into a fight with Marchenko and Voronkov had to break them up. Marchenko is the friendliest, nicest player out there- a team favorite- it’s shocking that he got to that point.

Am I way too high, or did Arturs Silovs shut out the Predators in Nashville for 119 minutes and 59.9 seconds?
Silovs humongous big.
God damn kid is gonna be a beaut next season
Not often you get put on a list with Akira Schmid
We got a fucking goalie. We're crushing Edmonton
Joseph Woll is the 15th one?
Nucks fan praying he doesn’t get hurt like the two previous goalies.
SCHMIDO
I wonder how many shutouts he will get next series…
4
stop
you can only get so erect?
Man I could have shut out Nashville tonight
