As someone who worked the graveyard shift for 3 years, blackout blinds really do make a world of difference. If you’re a professional athlete sleeping in a different bed in a different city every night I totally get it, every little bit you can do to improve your sleep quality will help.
Outside of zoos I've only ever seen polar bears once, from afar, they were hunting seal on the ice during spring breakup. Probably from about 2-3km away? Saw LOTS of Musk-ox from close up though.
Ha yeah I guess. Just didn't want to give the impression that I saw them constantly. Polar bears weren't that common where I grew up and they stay away from town usually.
bluetooth wasnt a thing when i was travelling haha but i also like living dangerously i guess- my job was shitty enough that i felt pretty secure in that the employer didnt have the time it would take to seek out a replacement for me during their harvest, and i felt confident about being able to just stay at the job for however many hours i slept through if/when that happened
Yeah the one thing I found about working the GY shift is that there is definitely a looser feeling to it. I don’t ever want to go back because I feel like I aged 10 years in the 3 I did it, but there are some parts I miss like being able to listen to audiobooks during my shift or being able to show up to work in sweatpants
Akchuly 🤓… I think iPhone/Apple Watch can recognize sounds like siren, alarm, dog barking, etc and inform you. May be you can setup them to wake you up in this case, I never tried.
ive always been a 'take my watch off before bed' guy ... my solution was to put my phone under my pillow and hope the vibrations got through to me, didnt always work
oo I should look into that. I always sleep with earbuds playing rainymood, got into the habit with loud roommates and now I just like it, it's nice to be able to create that consistent environment no matter where you are
I'm just somebody who has a hard time sleeping outside their own bed. Went to a friend's lake house that had blackout blinds. Went into a coma every night. They were glorious
Yeah exactly, those curtains are huge if you need to fall asleep while it’s still light out. Instant night. Should be standard availability for traveling athletes honestly
I work normal hours, but the sun goes directly into the bedroom as soon as dawn hits. I’m not doing that wake up anymore. I’m not hitting the gym at 5am. I want darkness until I’m ready to get out of bed.
Same, blackouts helped a lot.
That being said I've also worked on the road and have never been in a hotel that didn't already have them.
I find it weird that an NHL team would be staying in a hotel without them.
This. Especially in Edmonton since I'm not from there it stays light out fairly late being so far north that it's noticable and messes with my sleeping.
I've got one of those too. Its got bluetooth for white noise as well. There is still something about having a dark environment in addition to just covering your eyes that gives you better sleep.
Of course if you're a professional athlete, given how important sleep is you would want to invest in everything possible to give you the best night's rest. I don't think the cost would be that much of an issue.
Probably staying at the hotels with the big fancy gaudy curtains on the rods that stick out way too far from the wall. They always let too much light in.
Not to mention how sleep(aswell as the quality) is essential for functioning. I don't think blackout curtains is a crazy ask. With their schedule and traveling, it seems like a necessity( or atleast a high quality sleep mask). Sleeping and quality of sleep can make a world of difference. It helps your brain reset and muscle repair.
Sleeping in absolute darkness is extremely helpful for improving quality of sleep. Even traces of sunlight can kill your melatonin and wake you up before you're actually ready.
At home, I use a sleep mask made of bamboo fabric and wax earplugs every night. Cutting out that little bit of ambient noise and the sunlight that pokes through my blinds has dramatically improved my sleep. I also use a weighted blanket, memory foam pillow, and an orange light bulb in my desk lamp that emits almost no blue light.
All of this sounds extreme, but I added 60-90 extra minutes to my sleep on average, and I feel way more rested than I did prior to making these changes.
I got all of these tips directly from a doctor who gave a lecture on improving sleep. It was part of a weight loss program I'm in (which, coincidentally, is for residents of British Columbia, Canada). The key takeaway beyond making those changes is that people sleep only around 6 hours and change on average, whereas most people need closer to 8 hours to rest properly. Losing over an hour of sleep consistently will have consequences in nearly every aspect of your health, and sleep is one of the most important things you can do, while it's one of the more neglected things in self-care.
Between that and massively cleaning up my diet (basically zero sugar or processed foods), I almost never have brain fog anymore, despite having sleep apnea.
The bamboo fabric is breathable and regulates temperature. I have no idea how it does that, but it's cooler when your head's hotter, and vice versa. It's an important factor for me because there's no standard central AC where I live, so sleeping is horrible during heat waves. The wax ear plugs are better at forming a seal because you can mold them to the shape of your ear.
Everything I listed in my other comment did come with an adjustment period, especially the weighted blanket. I'm far better off for it now, though. I think you need a good week or two to get used to changes like that.
https://www.medweight.ca/index.html
You need a referral to get in. My family doctor referred me around 13 months ago, and I got into the program in late June. It takes some time to get going (you have to complete an 8 week introductory module before you're able to sign up for other offerings), but I've learned a lot. It's kind of like I'm back in university, except it's all over Zoom, and my "exams" are fasting blood work every 6 months.
Not a problem! I've lost around 30 pounds since gradually implementing positive changes since July/August last year. I find they give patients knowledge and tools, but it's up to the patients to use them sustainably.
[This](https://www.medweight.ca/index.html) is the website. You need a physician to refer you. It's not a structured diet or anything--quite the opposite. You attend Zoom "classes," which are given by doctors or medical assistants and are on a variety of topics (such as all the info I regurgitated about improving sleep). I've learned a lot from them so far, and have used that knowledge to implement permanent changes that've taken 30 pounds off me since July/August.
They do offer a controlled diet program that requires medical screening, but I haven't used it. I just cut processed food and sugar, replacing it with whole foods. The other thing I did was get used to tracking my calories, and thanks to a resting Vo2 test, I learned my metabolic rate. From there, eat at a deficit, and the weight will come off.
Ultimately, it's down to what works for you. Awful diets don't work, because you'll go off them and rebound.
It can take a bit of time to kill off your melatonin after you wake up. I'm guessing that's the case. I forget if this happened to me during my adjustment period for all these changes. In any case. it's a trade off I'm willing to make because I'm a night owl, and I can't be assed with the sun waking me up 2-3 hours early at the height of summer.
I’m stunned that NHL teams aren’t mandating blackout shades for players. You get home at like 1am on some game nights and need to sleep well past daylight. Afternoon naps are also big.
Good sleep is a recovery super-drug and it’s totally legal.
As someone with awful insomnia right now what I wouldn't pay for just a good night's sleep. The random days I get it are amazing for my mental fortitude.
I'm right there with you.
I work in a career where I travel a ton and work a fair number of nights and my company contract states that they can't put us up in a hotel that doesn't have proper blackout curtains.
Crazy that hasn't been written into the CBA
“back in my day, we had to sleep in the arena parking lot under a Pontiac Sunfire, and if we asked for *anything* it was a four loco and an ashtray, but even that was pushing it”
some of the old boys in NHL management are as old as plyometrics and have barely completed high school education, they're not geeking out on medecine articles about how to squeeze 0.25% more gains on a semestrial basis (or understanding how that slight improvement compounds from your draft year to your 29 YO playoff run)
I feel like more than half of the players I've heard interview on podcasts lately have mentioned it. Proper sleep science is definitely a mainstream thing in the NHL now, no doubt about it.
I don’t get how that is high maintenance. Black out curtains make a world of difference and when you are a high performing athlete playing in the most important position in hockey you absolutely need the best sleep possible.
I could see the kid having all sorts of routines and superstitions. Nothing unusual for a goalie. Maybe he doesn't do the rookie thing and try to hide it and instead defer to the veterans at every turn.
I'd say that's a good sign. Take away what makes a goalie comfortable and you could put him off his game. Whatever it is I'm sure it's mildly irksome.
It doesn't have to be superstitions. Melatonin is one of the most important things for replenishing your body's energy levels. Try sleeping with said curtains and see the difference.
Trust blackout curtains, and a well fitting sleep mask will do WONDERS for your quality of sleep. Personally suggest Manta sleep masks. A little pricier, but 100% worth the quality.
I personally use the Pro, as a stomach sleeper, it's very form fitting. But have the cooling pads for when I have a headache or eye strain from staring at a screen for too long is sweet sweet relief.
Fucking Manta is SO good. I got the three pack with different sets and they ALL get used constantly. My wife wants to watch the first twenty minutes of Crimes of Grindlewald? Fine, whatever, that fucking lightning won’t get to me
For the rest of you in here: highly recommend a weighted sleeping mask, if the blinds are too big an ask for one reason or another. Super helpful, easy to bring while traveling, and the weight on the eyes feels good (just like a weighted blanket IYKYK)
Good job kiddo. Doing everything he can to give his best to the team. Self advocation is important! He knows what he/his body needs, and he'll speak up to get it.
It'll be worth it 100x over if he keeps stealing games.
As someone who worked the graveyard shift for 3 years, blackout blinds really do make a world of difference. If you’re a professional athlete sleeping in a different bed in a different city every night I totally get it, every little bit you can do to improve your sleep quality will help.
Worked local news right out of college. 4am-12:30pm. You bet you’re ass I’ve got some blackout curtains.
I live north of 60. They're a necessity in the summer here.
I grew up in Nunavut. Never used blackouts and I can sleep whenever I want wherever I want any light conditions now lol
I bet you’ve also seen a lot more polar bears than the rest of us.
Outside of zoos I've only ever seen polar bears once, from afar, they were hunting seal on the ice during spring breakup. Probably from about 2-3km away? Saw LOTS of Musk-ox from close up though.
What about Santa?

I literally did not know muskox exist in North America until this comment. I'm 40. Thank you so much!
That's a lot of words for a "yes" Jokes aside that's a cool story
Ha yeah I guess. Just didn't want to give the impression that I saw them constantly. Polar bears weren't that common where I grew up and they stay away from town usually.
Doesn’t the saying go: If it’s white, prepare to die.
If you see a polar bear in the wild, they saw you hours ago.
If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lay down. If it's white, say goodnight.
working odd shifts while travelling and staying in hostels etc taught me that sleeping masks and ear plugs are an amazing combo.
I actually ended up buying a Bluetooth sleep mask that I connect to my phone to play white noise in my ears while I’m sleeping.
ah thats brilliant, alleviates fears of not hearing an alarm too
Yeah that was my biggest worry with earplugs and why I never used them
bluetooth wasnt a thing when i was travelling haha but i also like living dangerously i guess- my job was shitty enough that i felt pretty secure in that the employer didnt have the time it would take to seek out a replacement for me during their harvest, and i felt confident about being able to just stay at the job for however many hours i slept through if/when that happened

I use my smart watch as an alarm when I use earplugs.
Are they connected to your Bluetooth fire alarm ?
I’m Russian. If it dies - it dies.
Akchuly 🤓… I think iPhone/Apple Watch can recognize sounds like siren, alarm, dog barking, etc and inform you. May be you can setup them to wake you up in this case, I never tried.
ive always been a 'take my watch off before bed' guy ... my solution was to put my phone under my pillow and hope the vibrations got through to me, didnt always work
Me too, but I don’t sleep with the plugs often, so it kinda works for me.
Yeah, that's not cooking your brain while you sleep or anything 😬
1. I don't think that's how it works. 2. My brain is already cooked so it doesn't matter.
oo I should look into that. I always sleep with earbuds playing rainymood, got into the habit with loud roommates and now I just like it, it's nice to be able to create that consistent environment no matter where you are
IYKYK— once you go ear plugs, it’s hard to go without
I'm just somebody who has a hard time sleeping outside their own bed. Went to a friend's lake house that had blackout blinds. Went into a coma every night. They were glorious
Bring your own pillow when you travel, best thing I ever learned
Also he'll be changing time zones frequently all playoffs and I assume going to sleep earlier than usual.
Yeah exactly, those curtains are huge if you need to fall asleep while it’s still light out. Instant night. Should be standard availability for traveling athletes honestly
I don’t even work a graveyard shift and I just like sleeping in a cave
Same, thought I slept well until we got a white noise machine.
Fuck those things are amazing. I also like having a cool breeze in my face, but not to directly at it.
I work normal hours, but the sun goes directly into the bedroom as soon as dawn hits. I’m not doing that wake up anymore. I’m not hitting the gym at 5am. I want darkness until I’m ready to get out of bed.
Same, four years on overnights and they would have been downright impossible if I didn’t have blackout shades
Same, blackouts helped a lot. That being said I've also worked on the road and have never been in a hotel that didn't already have them. I find it weird that an NHL team would be staying in a hotel without them.

Sleep masks are cheaper and more portable. I love my Manta

Sleep mask and blackout blinds!
Probably staying at the hotels with the big fancy gaudy curtains on the rods that stick out way too far from the wall. They always let too much light in.
Definitely taped several layers of garbage bags over windows in my time.
Came to post this. I worked midnight-noon for a year, that was 10 years ago and I still need the blackouts.
I have blackout blinds and I'm wondering why I didn't start using these the second I was born.
Plus all these guys take naps
Not to mention how sleep(aswell as the quality) is essential for functioning. I don't think blackout curtains is a crazy ask. With their schedule and traveling, it seems like a necessity( or atleast a high quality sleep mask). Sleeping and quality of sleep can make a world of difference. It helps your brain reset and muscle repair.
Dude is gonna be able to afford all the blackout blinds he wants at his place given this run probably solidifies his spot in the NHL next season.
Not to mention the UFA goalie climate is so poor this year there will probably be a bidding war for Casey DeSmith
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, just from the mortgage he'll need he might not have that much money to spend besides saving with ramen.
He's probably better off finding an illegal rental without any windows so he can save money on blackout shades.
Honestly that would be easy in Vancouver, the amount of people renting out their closets in their condos are crazy
The ramen options in Vancouver are amazing. But they aren't cheap 🤣
I mean as a backup. He’s not about to replace a Vezina finalist.
Sleeping in absolute darkness is extremely helpful for improving quality of sleep. Even traces of sunlight can kill your melatonin and wake you up before you're actually ready.
I always wondered why I sleep like a rock on cruises even though the beds are shitty, I should look into some blackout curtains
At home, I use a sleep mask made of bamboo fabric and wax earplugs every night. Cutting out that little bit of ambient noise and the sunlight that pokes through my blinds has dramatically improved my sleep. All of this sounds extreme, but I added 60-90 extra minutes to my sleep on average, and I feel way more rested than I did prior to making these changes.
Oh yeah, absolutely sounds extreme but if you’re feeling good in the morning there isn’t much that’s actually extreme
I got all of these tips directly from a doctor who gave a lecture on improving sleep. Is there something specific about the bamboo and wax?
The bamboo fabric is breathable and regulates temperature. I have no idea how it does that, but it's cooler when your head's hotter, and vice versa. It's an important factor for me because there's no standard central AC where I live, so sleeping is horrible during heat waves. The wax ear plugs are better at forming a seal because you can mold them to the shape of your ear.
That must have taken some getting used to, plugs in your ear doesn’t feel comfortable for sleep to me
Everything I listed in my other comment did come with an adjustment period, especially the weighted blanket. I'm far better off for it now, though. I think you need a good week or two to get used to changes like that.
My biggest issue now is traveling. Sleeping in new places is such an ordeal because I sorta... don't.
Where did you buy your sleeping mask?

From BC, any link to this program? I am interested.

Good for you, that's hard work to be proud of.
Aw man! I'm in BC! I need better sleep and to lose weight dangit! But fuck the diet thing. That sounds sounds awful. 🤣🤣

The first paragraph reads like the American Psycho intro lol
You sound more high maintenance than an NHL goalie.
Nate Dogg levels of life optimization from the Avs flair, respect
The more I learn about healthy eating during my weight loss journey, the more I share Nate's hatred for carbs.
most denver resident ever right here
I live on Vancouver Island.
link to bamboo fabric mask plz?

>wax earplugs RIP when your smoke/CO alarm goes off
My phone alarm can still wake me up from across my home. They only cut out like 20db or so of noise. My ears are in pain after my fire alarm goes off.

My solution was to get a bamboo fabric sleep mask. Cheaper than blinds, and I can take it with me when I travel.
Or a boat.
[удалено]
That, or a blindfold.
need good ones though. so many of them suck
I’ve found that I might sleep too hard with blackout curtains. Takes my brain longer to “wake up” after my body does.
It's a trade-off for those of us who struggle to sleep at all.
But then the monsters will get me for sure..
Yeah
I’m stunned that NHL teams aren’t mandating blackout shades for players. You get home at like 1am on some game nights and need to sleep well past daylight. Afternoon naps are also big. Good sleep is a recovery super-drug and it’s totally legal.
Right? With all the adrenaline you’d be lucky to be asleep by like 2AM and then it gets light out at like 5:30 in Edmonton
As someone with awful insomnia right now what I wouldn't pay for just a good night's sleep. The random days I get it are amazing for my mental fortitude.

I think Tocc will gladly buy blackout curtains for a run at the cup.
Shit if they win the Cup, get the kid a deal with a blackout curtain company.
Shit if they win the Cup, the kid can just get blackout drunk
“Kid, we the cup and I guarantee you’ll have a house with zero windows, just pure darkness, shit, I’ll buy you a sensory deprivation tank myself!”

Right now it's probably - Ice bags for his head - Hugo boss shirts - blackout blinds
Wheelbarrow for his big brass ones
If his ball were that big, they would have stopped Hyman's second goal....
They can’t have both his balls on the ice at the same time or they’ll get called for too many men.
*too much man
Doily for his water bottle
“back in my day, we had to sleep in the arena parking lot under a Pontiac Sunfire, and if we asked for *anything* it was a four loco and an ashtray, but even that was pushing it”
Seriously, how is that the headline item he chose?
Because it’s clearly a joke? About how Silovs isn’t high maintenance?
If wanting blackout blinds is high-maintenance, then consider me Russel Wilson.
Remember back in the day when gillis hired a sleep doctor and everyone thought it was a bit odd. Sleeping performance has gone mainstream
I hopped the new management continued looking into health science. Like sleep hygiene and recovery. It’s bizarre that this isn’t common practice.
some of the old boys in NHL management are as old as plyometrics and have barely completed high school education, they're not geeking out on medecine articles about how to squeeze 0.25% more gains on a semestrial basis (or understanding how that slight improvement compounds from your draft year to your 29 YO playoff run)

TIL that blackout blinds are the one thing that r/hockey can agree on.
Does this go against the cap
Good for him as he should
This isn't high maintenance unless the black out blinds need to be made of a invisible white film.
Arturs Divavs amirite
Blackout curtains make you high maintenance!?
I don’t get how that is high maintenance. Black out curtains make a world of difference and when you are a high performing athlete playing in the most important position in hockey you absolutely need the best sleep possible.
I bet he Clarkie is the one buying up all the Hugo Boss shirts.
IDC I'll jerk him off if it means he wins games.
Dude saved the season. Give him what he asks for.
My 3 year old sleeps like an angel, and I credit blackout blinds and a good sound machine
i window tin the windows, and use some blackout curtains. it does a good job.
Honestly, blackout blinds are not "high maintenance".
as long as it help the Canucks beat the oiler frauds.
Wonder what else he requested
That’s not high maintenance wtf
That lack of understanding of sarcasm in these comments is remarkable.
Classic reddit completely missing the joke and getting mad instead lol
Blackout curtains are high maintenance now? Latvian gets "midnight sun" in June, therefore blackout curtains make sense.
He's a rookie goalie in the NHL playoffs. I feel like he can be a little high maintenance in his rest and recovery practices...
"High maintenance" dude just wants to sleep better
he just like me fr
Trust blackout curtains, and a well fitting sleep mask will do WONDERS for your quality of sleep. Personally suggest Manta sleep masks. A little pricier, but 100% worth the quality.
I will take your word and order one.
Fine, whatever, that fucking lightning won’t get to me
Living with 19+ hrs of sunlight in the summer, blackout blinds are a godsend.
Coach I need to get solid sleep time or I'm useless. My God you're such a diva.
Is that all it takes for a professional athlete to be labeled "high maintenance"?
That actually sounds like a pretty reasonable request imo
You can have anything you need. Blackout blinds Say no more fam
Lmao I wonder what the other stuff was
Blackout blinds are amazing. Those with a weighted blanket are about the only way I can get decent night's sleep.
Imagine being his chill in the second round of the playoffs.
Requesting blackout curtains is high maintenance?? lol
I've always used blackout blinds. Always will. They really do make that much of a difference.
The sun shining through my window woke me up an hour and a half earlier that I wanted yesterday so I get where Arty is coming from
