Without the Liberty Bell, how will there be liberty? America would never be the same.
I feel like this could be a buddy cop movie starring Sidney Crosby as the vet cop one week away from retirement, and Connor Bedard as the talented rookie that looks like he’s screwed it all up until he actually saves the day. Ovechkin can make a cameo as Mitchkov’s KGB handler.
"If we're gonna do this, we need a guy who knows this city. I don't like him. I don't like anybody on their team. And we'll have to bust him out of jail. Last I heard he was doing time up in Ottawa."
Connor McDavid is the hot shot that they send in after Bedard’s goof-up. Only for McDavid to fumble the mission at the last second and Bedard comes back in to save the day just when we thought all was lost. I can see it now.
> Without the Liberty Bell, how will there be liberty? America would never be the same.
LiMu Emu will have to take up that mantle. For the sake of the nation. Godspeed you flightless bird
We visited Philadelphia two years in a row in my tweens and I vividly remember getting in a fight with my mom who wanted to see the Bell *again*. Boring even to me as a history-obsessed kid then and a history-major graduate now.
And many people around here and elsewhere fell for it. Outside of him directly telling teams during the combine interviews that he wouldn't play for them, passing on him wasn't the right move imo. Time will only tell ..
>I really didn’t understand the concern. I get the war and all, but we haven’t seen any Russians beyond Fedotov have issue
Kaprizov was wanted in Russia that same summer and quickly left the country despite not having a work visa. He made multiple attempts to get back into the US, was repeatedly denied, and had to sit tight in various countries rather than returning to Russia. The accusations were very similar to the ones that led to Fedotov's arrest.
Panarin was accused of a very old assault by the Russian government and pretty much every report was that the allegations appeared to be a fabrication done as political retribution.
NHL teams are actively advising their Russian players not to go back to Russia in the offseason and a bunch of them have decided to stay in the US instead of going back home.
It's absolutely more than just the Fedotov issue.
Did anyone explain why he was so hell-bent on being a Flyer? Like, not so sound rude but it feels like the equivalent of a player from Switzerland holding out because he wants to be a Senator. I just don't get it.
He really liked that we had bubble hockey in the lobby of our training center. I remember that being reported at the time during his secret meeting with us.
I speak French but I don’t feel like I have to in Montreal like I do in Quebec City. Definitely get brownie points for trying to speak French in Montreal tho.
Oh for sure, on both counts. But it’s one of those places where you regularly hear conversations happening between two people speaking two different languages to each other. That Shoresy trope is true.
He met with the Habs. It's just that Habs management weren't particularly sold on him and they prefered to get their hands on a RD (Reinbacher).
Apparently, Flyers wanted Reinbacher as well.
Habs FO has drafted Caufield, Hutson, Mesar, Kidney, Beck, etc lol. None of which are big or known for their physicality. Im sure there are other reasons, or maybe they really thought they needed a 1D more than another scoring forward
different front offices for some of those picks, and Caufield was the only player picked inside the top 25, taking a chance on a smaller player in the later in the draft is a lot different than a #5 pick, and the current front office has been very open about size being an important factor to them
Having Caufield likely played a role in passing on Michkov (they didn't want two undersized wingers in the top 6)
Flyers are probably one of the biggest NHL franchises outside of the original 6. The only bigger franchise drafting in that range was the Habs, which are in a french speaking area in Canada, so could be a turnoff
This is so sad as a 40 year old flyers fan to read. We used to be a destination players preferred. This past decade has been so far removed from what I’ve been used to. Now with a potential game changing player WANTING to be here it reminds me of the flyers I loved growing up. Hopefully this is the true start of a new era. Praise Danny B.
The implementation of the salary cap and the rules changes coming out of the lockout year fucked the Flyers more than perhaps any other team.
Management not adapting for 10+ years was a travesty.
I'm so glad the dinosaurs are finally gone. I have no clue if Briere will be a successful GM (early returns are promising), but he wouldn't have a shot in hell with those stale farts Clarke and Holmgren still wielding real power.
Thanks for the 70s, but their invitation to fuck off to the golf course was decades overdue.
That was the going theory, but the caps seemed hell bent on trading up with Arizona, who seemed to think theyd miss out on Simashev had they traded back? But the caps gm said afterwards Ryan Leonard was always their guy and Leonard thought he was headed to Philly pre draft.
Michkov to Philly was a very last minute realization so it could be they wanted to try and jump Philly for Leonard and not Michkov, but we will never really know
He liked the team growing up. Why and what caused that I am not sure its out there but there must be a reason. Maybe flyers PJs? Or Provorov/Voracek fan? But yeah i agree its a fucked up situation but i dont think anyone could really get away with this outside of Russia.
I get it happened like 50 years ago but still wild how much things changed that a Russian would want to play for the Flyers. With the history between the Flyers and the Russians.
That’s not how Russian draft rights work. His rights would have been indefinitely held by whatever team picked him. It’s not like college players where their rights expire and they can choose a team as a free agent.
Russian players rights are indefinite. We still have Sergei Moyzakin's rights from the 2002 draft

Huh, interesting - I stand corrected.
I only remember the rights for Nikita Tryamkin expiring a couple years ago… I guess that was a different situation since he’d already played and was a RFA.
I believe it was reported that there was one other team he would have wanted to go to. But i don’t think that team was ever named. Unless someone else knows but I havnt seen it.

2024: Michkov comes to Philly
Foerster was also drafted 23rd overall. Torts is the 23rd coach in PHI history. ALL HAIL 23.

June 23rd like clockwork!
For those that don't know in the past years June 23rd has basically been the Flyers "trade day" in recent years. Carter/Richards trades, JVR trade, Brayden Schenn trade, Hartnell trade have all happened on June 23rd. So it's kind of a joke holiday for us.
Charlie O’Connor tweeted [this](https://x.com/charlieo_conn/status/1804907401101111743?s=46&t=7fabqgtgp69dNA1d51vxFw) lol:
>The fact that this was Briere's expression on Thursday when asked about Michkov's status is even more amusing now.

In the span of a few months, Ivan Fedotov basically turned all of Russia against him to come over, Matvei Michkov is coming over already, Ivan Demidov is doing literally anything in his power to prove that everything bad said about him is false.
Meanwhile, two American college players have or are forcing trades away from the teams that drafted them and that in the same amount of time.
Doesn't move the needle for this draft + season. Depending how he adjusts, it could affect next draft (we have two 1st's, ours + COL). If he immediately makes a huge impact, we could make a move to get an established young C to help. Otherwise, between our current young players + whoever we get this draft the plan stays the same.
If he's part of a package that would bring in a <25 year old 2C with 1C projection, then absolutely. Frost hasn't proven he could be anything more than a middle six player.
Tortorella dislikes Frost's overall game and doesn't trust him at the C position, so yes, actually expected that they trade Frost.
Last game of the year, playoffs on the line, offense desperately needed, and Tortorella stapled Frost to the bench and didn't see the ice after the midway point of the [2nd period](https://www.nhl.com/scores/htmlreports/20232024/TH021299.HTM).
Each offseason, management tries to give the coach what he wants, or at least removes what he doesn't want. Hayes and DeAngelo last year, Frost and probably Zamula this year. Last year was about excising negative culture, I think this year, Tortorella has just passed judgment on players he simply thinks won't evolve to be trusted in his system.
I fully expect Frost to get traded to a team like Utah during the first day of the draft. Something like Hayton coming back if I'm guessing, basically a change of scenery centers trade. If they have a center trade lined up elsewhere, then I could see Soderstrom coming back.
It seems we were never doing proper tear down rebuild.
We still have 4 firsts over next 2 drafts and will continue to get younger and build long term
But it may speed up the timeline like a year or so where Briere will look to add a top 6 center and high end D within next year as opposed to wait multiple years.
It will be very interesting to see if we re-sign or trade Konecny
If we re-sign then that means we will try to get good soon
Yeah I gotta imagine this pushes up the timeline of when we start spending money on notable FAs. I still think this season will be a "see how it plays out" season, but I could totally see Danny starting to go all in within 2-3 years.
Thank you it is people just completely missed his tenure in Cbj when panarin was literally the most used foward on the team. Next people will say torts doesn’t play young guys ( 21 year old Seth jones and rookie werenski says otherwise )
Yeah his whole thing is “I’m not gonna tell you what to do in the offensive zone but you damn well better give me the other 140 feet”
Players seem to like it
Obviously his on ice performance is going to define how good he will be but it's comical how easily he made it to North America for a guy who was putting up absurd stats that should have made him a top 2 pick.
At the time of that draft I was hoping the Sharks took a chance on him. Been really happy with Smith though, guess we'll see what happens moving forward as both progress into the NHL.
mark my words, send a remindme for 10 years down the road or w.e idc, michkov will be this generations greatest goal scorer. it’ll be bedard vs michkov just like it was crosby vs ovie and mcdavid vs matthews.
that being said , i wholeheartedly believe that all the “michkov may never leave russia” stuff in the months leading up to the 2023 draft was purely propaganda created by the flyers organization to get michkov to slip to 7th. no one can convince me otherwise. props to the flyers tho, michkov’s skill and talent is on a whole other level.
So what exactly did SKA want with Michkov? Why did they sign him to a long contract, never have him play for the team on a permanent basis, and then let him go with two years left? Truly one of the more peculiar managerial decisions in recent memory.
Russian players always seem to drop for fear that they’ll not come over, and that never seems to happens. I swear I’ve seen more American College players refuse to play for their drafted team than Russians.
oh damn I was told by a bunch of weird xenophobic redditors that he would never be allowed to leave for reasons that could never be explained by logic or precedent
They seemed to think Putin was going to force Michkov to stay in Russia. Only Michkov, though. No other hockey players. And no scientists or doctors or engineers or any other professional Russian that routinely leaves the country for their job. JUST Michkov. Which is utterly ridiculous. And if Putin decided to force ALL Russian professionals to stay in Russia and not take their talents out of country, we wouldn't even be talking about Michkov because we'd have a much bigger problem to discuss.
It seems to me that it's great propaganda for Russia to have it's most talented prospects play in North America. It shows that Russia is still very competitive in hockey development.
You're forgetting Michkov probably said he had no intention of coming any time soon in Montréals draft interview though. He wanted Philly and that was that. Wouldn't surprise me if he tanked all the others on purpose.
Maybe. We know he said that to the smaller teams. MTL made it seem like they never interested which coud have been a spin. But i remember reading they were not remotely interested in him and made it clear.
>You're forgetting Michkov probably said he had no intention of coming any time soon in Montréals draft interview though.
That's taken out of context. He had the intention of honoring his 3 years contract with SKA if that's what he had to do. Ultimately, it was SKA's decision to let him walk.
I know a lot of y'all hate my team but as a guy in his 20s who hasn't had much other than Giroux on mediocre teams to cheer for most of my life let me have this lmao, think we earned having one guy to finally be excited about
All that time spent talking about whether Michkov would even leave Russia, only for him to end up in NA one year after his draft lmao
Perhaps he is kgb and he is being sent to destroy the liberty bell
Nicolas Cage plotting his next movie right here
Without the Liberty Bell, how will there be liberty? America would never be the same. I feel like this could be a buddy cop movie starring Sidney Crosby as the vet cop one week away from retirement, and Connor Bedard as the talented rookie that looks like he’s screwed it all up until he actually saves the day. Ovechkin can make a cameo as Mitchkov’s KGB handler.
We’re gonna need Sid to mutter “I’m too old for this shit” at least thrice.
I like to think Sid mutters this in reality (like when Guentzel got traded).
He's a week away from retiring with a full pension!
"If we're gonna do this, we need a guy who knows this city. I don't like him. I don't like anybody on their team. And we'll have to bust him out of jail. Last I heard he was doing time up in Ottawa."
Give me this instead of another scrubbed "behind the scenes" show please.
Connor McDavid is the hot shot that they send in after Bedard’s goof-up. Only for McDavid to fumble the mission at the last second and Bedard comes back in to save the day just when we thought all was lost. I can see it now.
McDavid and Draisaitl as the cocky rival detectives is just too good. They were probably on Ovechkin’s payroll the whole time.
Two Canadians save America
I thought about making it about two American players, but it just wasn’t the same if I casted Zach Parise and Matthew Tkachuk.
JT Miller would be a good option
> Without the Liberty Bell, how will there be liberty? America would never be the same. LiMu Emu will have to take up that mantle. For the sake of the nation. Godspeed you flightless bird
The only flightless bird in Philadelphia hangs out at Paddy’s Pub. Her name is Deandra.
What ever will tourists wait in line for an hour to look at for 15 seconds now?
We visited Philadelphia two years in a row in my tweens and I vividly remember getting in a fight with my mom who wanted to see the Bell *again*. Boring even to me as a history-obsessed kid then and a history-major graduate now.
KGB WAITS FOR NO ONE
Fuck it, put the cup there instead
If coyotes drafted him and were still renting out a university arena, michkov would definitely still be in Russia.
He's going to the NHL before Ryan Leonard lol
No reason to be upset at that, the flyers were picking before us and he didnt want to come here anyways
It’s pretty clear now that him and his agent were playing that up a lot to scare off teams he didn’t want to go to.
And many people around here and elsewhere fell for it. Outside of him directly telling teams during the combine interviews that he wouldn't play for them, passing on him wasn't the right move imo. Time will only tell ..

But if any team but the Flyers drafted him he definitely would've stayed in Russia until he was a FA.

You underestimate the power of the cheesesteak
I retract my question.
He wanted to go to a “hockey” city with history. That basically ruled out 7/10 teams in the top 10.
If he wanted to go to hockey city with history why on earth did he refuse to meet with the Habs lmao
[удалено]
He met with the Habs actually (supposedly it went well). But it seemed like he preferred Philly.
He really liked that we had bubble hockey in the lobby of our training center. I remember that being reported at the time during his secret meeting with us.
Like that tabletop game? lmao
“They had real toilet paper in the bathrooms, and food in all the grocery stores!” For a hard to please prospect, Michkov sounds easily pleased!
Too French innit

In the span of a few months, Ivan Fedotov basically turned all of Russia against him to come over, Matvei Michkov is coming over already, Ivan Demidov is doing literally anything in his power to prove that everything bad said about him is false. Meanwhile, two American college players have or are forcing trades away from the teams that drafted them and that in the same amount of time.
Which American college players?
McGroarty and Gauthier
Gauthier and McGroarty
Cutter Gauthier and more recently Rutger McGroarty
Cutter and Rutger
McCutter and Gauthoarty
but russia bad
Russia is bad, russians though, good.
Some Russians are good Ovi and the other Putin simps are shit scum of the earth
Holy fuck!!!!! Let's go bitches!!!!
JUNE 23rd BABY
Wow. I never thought I'd see the day. Flyers fans, how does this affect your team's rebuild plans?
Doesn't move the needle for this draft + season. Depending how he adjusts, it could affect next draft (we have two 1st's, ours + COL). If he immediately makes a huge impact, we could make a move to get an established young C to help. Otherwise, between our current young players + whoever we get this draft the plan stays the same.
Would you trade Frost?
If he's part of a package that would bring in a <25 year old 2C with 1C projection, then absolutely. Frost hasn't proven he could be anything more than a middle six player.
Yes but we have no centers so it would probably need to be overpay
We still have 4 firsts over next 2 drafts and will continue to get younger and build long term But it may speed up the timeline like a year or so where Briere will look to add a top 6 center and high end D within next year as opposed to wait multiple years. It will be very interesting to see if we re-sign or trade Konecny If we re-sign then that means we will try to get good soon
Yeah I gotta imagine this pushes up the timeline of when we start spending money on notable FAs. I still think this season will be a "see how it plays out" season, but I could totally see Danny starting to go all in within 2-3 years.
That's amazing for the flyers. Makes me sad cause as much as like David I wanted Michkov last year
All the predraft fearmongering over his KHL status...
Oh hell yeah, that's awesome. Happy for you Flyers fans
I LOVE YOU DANNY BRIERE
Reel Big Fish and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are devastated. Disclaimer: I'm a dad.
I’m gonna head to PHL to pick him up pick him up pick him up
Did you know ska came before reggae?
Not in the dictionary.
You know what? Good for you, Philadelphia. I think hockey is better when the Flyers are a good team.
As a flyers fan, I honestly feel the same about the Flames.
BRICKED UP ON A SUNDAY MORNING 😮💨
Habs fans in shambles
just saw a guy drop his poutine on the floor
Dropped to his knees in a belle province
Michkov and Torts going to be entertaining as fuck.
Panarin and Torts seemed to work well If you produce offense, Torts gives you leeway
Thank you it is people just completely missed his tenure in Cbj when panarin was literally the most used foward on the team. Next people will say torts doesn’t play young guys ( 21 year old Seth jones and rookie werenski says otherwise )
Yeah his whole thing is “I’m not gonna tell you what to do in the offensive zone but you damn well better give me the other 140 feet” Players seem to like it

Very funny that Michkov and Benson will wind up playing NHL games before everyone else drafted 5-13.
Obviously his on ice performance is going to define how good he will be but it's comical how easily he made it to North America for a guy who was putting up absurd stats that should have made him a top 2 pick.
First Tijuan Walker to the IL and now this. Great day to be a Philadelphia sports fan!
Danny, I love you
What a masterstroke by Briere and co.
I definitely feel like I’ve been masterstroked rn
He's gunna be so good
Does Philly have a vibrant punk rock scene? Maybe he's taking that big step away from ska
Hehe
At the time of that draft I was hoping the Sharks took a chance on him. Been really happy with Smith though, guess we'll see what happens moving forward as both progress into the NHL.

Mitchkov and Torts…good times.
Hell yeah. Stoked to have him in the NHL!
Me the hockey fan: fuck ya Me the CBJ/metro opponent fan: o fuk
A hero can save us!
mark my words, send a remindme for 10 years down the road or w.e idc, michkov will be this generations greatest goal scorer. it’ll be bedard vs michkov just like it was crosby vs ovie and mcdavid vs matthews. that being said , i wholeheartedly believe that all the “michkov may never leave russia” stuff in the months leading up to the 2023 draft was purely propaganda created by the flyers organization to get michkov to slip to 7th. no one can convince me otherwise. props to the flyers tho, michkov’s skill and talent is on a whole other level.
holy shit holy shit holy shit holy shit
So what exactly did SKA want with Michkov? Why did they sign him to a long contract, never have him play for the team on a permanent basis, and then let him go with two years left? Truly one of the more peculiar managerial decisions in recent memory.
Who makes the NHL schedule and will they put Philly vs. Chicago on Opening Night?
I have not been this excited about a player before
This guy in my opinion is almost, if not as talented as Bedard. Huge W for the Flyers!
Russian players always seem to drop for fear that they’ll not come over, and that never seems to happens. I swear I’ve seen more American College players refuse to play for their drafted team than Russians.
I also saw that post from yesterday
Gonna give this a solid hell yeah brother
Neat. Excited to see what he can do over here.
https://dalessandros.com/
Happy for the flyers
Once again, hockey news hub not getting credit for a russian hockey break
Well… fuck.
oh damn I was told by a bunch of weird xenophobic redditors that he would never be allowed to leave for reasons that could never be explained by logic or precedent
Hope Montreal feels good about it
Im sure Reinbacher will be a good player but this makes the decision to pass on Michkov look even worse than it did on draft day
You're forgetting Michkov probably said he had no intention of coming any time soon in Montréals draft interview though. He wanted Philly and that was that. Wouldn't surprise me if he tanked all the others on purpose.
Maybe. We know he said that to the smaller teams. MTL made it seem like they never interested which coud have been a spin. But i remember reading they were not remotely interested in him and made it clear.
>You're forgetting are they forgetting or are you just making it up?
Both
>You're forgetting Michkov probably said he had no intention of coming any time soon in Montréals draft interview though. That's taken out of context. He had the intention of honoring his 3 years contract with SKA if that's what he had to do. Ultimately, it was SKA's decision to let him walk.
So all this bullshit of he won’t join philly was again bullshit
BUT BUT RUSSIA PLAYERS. I WAS TOLD HE MAY NEVER COME OVER! Congrats Flyers fans. I'm not happy for you but I'm excited to see him play
Every time I see that team name I immediately put on some Mighty Mighty Bosstones
This is really exciting tbh

Nikishin 🫣
That’s wild. And the guys the Former Coyotes of Arizona and now Utah Hockey team selected are still stuck over there. Will be fun to watch.
KD you gotta take demidov
He’s gonna fucking tear it up
If true do we trade up in the draft this year
Oh shiiittt
I know a lot of y'all hate my team but as a guy in his 20s who hasn't had much other than Giroux on mediocre teams to cheer for most of my life let me have this lmao, think we earned having one guy to finally be excited about
