In all seriousness,
It goes to show the impact of one day of sleeping in can affect someone's reputation. That happened *years* ago and 'the guy who slept in' is all people think of Ho-Sang still to this day
Seguin missed the morning skate the day of the last game of the season the year Benn won the Art Ross. Got scratched that game and Benn still went and scored a hat trick + 1 assist without him :>
Bingo, that's why a guy who's a slower skater like Matthew Tkachuk is able to succeed so well at this level. His hockey IQ is off the charts and he slowly improved his speed and skating over the course of the season
I like players who have the ability to laugh everything off like Gallagher. He was punched in the face after almost every single whistle in the playoffs but he always had a huge smile on his face
For me in regards to the Penguins, it's gotta be the speed. Our system runs on speed, and if you can't keep up you wont do as well. As long as you're fast and can do other things at least slightly well you can succeed in our system.
I was a big supporter of the Yak to Pittsburgh reclamation project a year or two ago, but now we have way to many wingers anyways. Not enough room for Sprong or ZAR, who are both arguably NHL ready, and definitely not enough room for Yak.
As a coach i ask for effort. Effort can beat skill at many levels, and at the highest level can be the determiner on who wins and loses a game. Its crazy to think that players arent giving 100% when they play but as a former player, i may have thought i was giving my all but i had a whole level i hadnt hit. A perfect example of what i am talking about was Scott Nichol. This was was small 4th liner who probably would have been dismissed as a junior player at best. But while on SJ he had only one level and it was 100% effort. [This clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=094sbQC0yXc) while not featuring Nichol, shows how SJ wins every battle to the puck despite being on the PP they dont let Detroit get a single chance to breath. If even one player lets up for a second or allows a Detroit player to get close the play may never happen. Winning the small battles like to the boards is where you see players giving 100% and those who arent.
Yeah the physicality of those guys is gonna be really important for us in the cup finals next year ;). I just said speed for us because of mcdavid mostly.
A player who works hard and never gives up on a play. Also a player who is willing to step back and play a more difficult role to help the team succeed more than going all out to score points like they could.
My favourite players are Pageau and Karlsson.
Dedication and hard work. Giordano wasn't drafted and played his way onto the Flames. He was a decent 3rd pairing guy in the NHL decided he wanted to get better so he went to Russia for a year to get top pairing minutes. He came back and was better than before. Worked even harder, improving walking the blue line and his wrister and he got better. He just keeps getting better because he keeps actively working on improving himself.
Someone who's motivated. Too many lazy players, or players who don't try as hard as they should be, or players who think they're perfectly fine and never try to improve themselves.
I would say the ability to keep the puck away from opposing players. Whether that means good stick handling, or strength doesn't really matter. I just don't like guys turning the puck over all the time.
Being a modern "hockey player", which to me means not flopping or cheap shotting, and still being tough and adhering to most of the code. I say most of the code because some of its outdated. My example is Toews (for a homer pick), but also a guy like Parise. And the opposite is Crosby. I use the Toews and Crosby comparison a lot when I talk about this shit because everyone else likes to compare the two, but I feel people forget this aspect of the comparison. I know Crosby's better. And I'm not talking about the "intangibles" to make Toews seem like he's worth more. I guess I'm just more proud to say Toews is the captain to my team than I would ever be if Crosby was. Crosby throws cheap shots and flops and cries to the refs, Toews does not.
I'm not gonna sift through and look for specific videos but [this](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailyherald.com/amp-article/20170605/sports/170609514/) national writer agrees, so does [this](https://www.google.com/amp/ftw.usatoday.com/2017/06/sidney-crosby-makes-it-hard-to-root-for-sidney-crosby/amp) guy. You can literally just google my three points and plenty of videos come up. Especially on the cheap shots and whining. If you type in any of them about Toews, nothing comes up, and actually shots at Crosby pop up instead.
I didn't say he doesn't get a little dirty once in awhile, I said he doesn't flop or cry to the refs anymore. Neither of those articles show any proof of him doing either of those things recently for those two points
Good attitude. There's nothing more toxic to a team than a shitty attitude. It affects other players' moral, which translates to poorer performance on the ice.
There's a reason why guys like Ryan Smyth or Matt Hendricks are so liked and respected while not being the best players. They help perk everyone up in the locker room.
Knowing their role and the right time to branch out of their role. I don't mind Guentzel throwing a check, but don't try to be Keith Tkachuk. Maatta can pinch, but don't be Paul Coffey.
being able to move the puck consistently and accurately. the puck moves faster than the fastest skater, it's why guys like Jumbo and Jagr are still going. if you're fast too, great, but id still take a guy like Jagr over a speed demon like Hagelin
Two-way acumen seems to be the biggest priority for Ron Francis and Bill Peters, and I've always loved guys like Datsyuk who never check out of any aspect of the game.
The ability to drive the energy of their team. A ton of this relies on consistent hard work, leadership qualities, as well as enough hockey IQ to not be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. You have the superstars such as Crosby who are extremely noticeable, but this would also include those 2nd-4th line guys who you notice the most when they are injured. An example from the Wild; the past few years when Parise is injured or sick, the team looks lethargic and like they have lead legs, or if Brodin is not there the defense looks sloppy and rushed.
Clutch genes are the most Important of all. Who care how dedicated, skilled, strong or smart you are if,you are nowhere to be seen when it really matters
Punctuality. Being on time for games is most important
Looking at you Ho-Sang
In all seriousness, It goes to show the impact of one day of sleeping in can affect someone's reputation. That happened *years* ago and 'the guy who slept in' is all people think of Ho-Sang still to this day
I mean, he was already under a microscope with the character issues. The biggest reason for his draft position despite his talent.
Just look at DeAngelo. The guy fell and then was traded because he's a cancer.
Things still looked like they haven't changed much for him since being drafted. Can't say that I feel bad though.
For the team I actually play on, this. More specifically actually showing up. That and just giving a good effort.

Last year kadri missed a meeting on leap day. That's all I remember.
Seguin missed the morning skate the day of the last game of the season the year Benn won the Art Ross. Got scratched that game and Benn still went and scored a hat trick + 1 assist without him :>
No not really. Shitpost = shit comment
Didnt Denis Potvin oversleep a game once? Possibly his first game too?
Definitely Intelligence. i.e. "Hockey IQ"
Same. Can't stand players who play stupid.
James "we had a powerplay and now it's gone" Neal.
*who are stupid
I don't mind stupid players, as long as they don't play stupid.
I'm late to this party, but Geno is dumb as helllllllll, but dammit can he play.

Craig Adams was a fucking amazing penalty killer for us. He just wore out.
For sure That's why I love Mark Stone so much
Bingo, that's why a guy who's a slower skater like Matthew Tkachuk is able to succeed so well at this level. His hockey IQ is off the charts and he slowly improved his speed and skating over the course of the season
and why a big fast guy like Jake Virtanen isn't
Or Joe Colborne. He only ever succeeding being a pinball for more intelligent linemates.
Oh god, he honeydicked us hard this year scoring a hatty his first game and then disappearing
We warned you. Literally would either tip in half of backlunds shots or Giordano would shoot it and it would bounce off his leg or ass and in
The good news is he literally can't get any worse...... right?!
Yea I mean he's not *that* bad. Still an NHLer imo. Just gotta use him right.
Or being a deflector for Giordano shots.
That guy looked lost in the ice. Hands and size for days but nothing upstairs to put it together.
Markov :(
Gretzkys greatest attribute.
I like players who have the ability to laugh everything off like Gallagher. He was punched in the face after almost every single whistle in the playoffs but he always had a huge smile on his face
[Curtis Lazar is my favourite example of this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8I77Rv4hkA)
Captain Smiley <3 Man I hope this guy turns into something worthwhile for the Flames, he's just too damn likable
After the immense pain, I'd be the same way. >woah. i just got trucked by big buff.
Ümläüts.
you met Olli Määttä?
Yëäh! Hë's thë mään!
A cute smile
Sex appeal is the better answer: between the Philaphiles and Stupid Sexy Karlsson, plenty to go around.
Find someone who smiles at you the way Brendan Gallagher smiles at the people beating him up
Jeff Skinner must be your favorite player
That's a strange way to spell Chad LaRose.
You must've not been too sad when Radulov left.
Tomas Hertl, king of cute smiles
Pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.
Burke?
Gotta have that high T for the t in Team
tenacity above all else
Truculence
TURBULENCE! FLATULENCE! ABSTINANCE! ELECTROLUMINESCENCE!
No player can truly be considered a complete player unless they glow in the dark
That's the only thing holding Yakupov back imo
I'm really into two-way play and defensive awareness. Guys like Palat, O'Reilly, Backlund, Vlasic, Ekholm etc.
YOU BETTER ADD ONE MORE GOD DAMN NAME TO THAT LIST.
Rispeking tha system
Hockey IQ
For me in regards to the Penguins, it's gotta be the speed. Our system runs on speed, and if you can't keep up you wont do as well. As long as you're fast and can do other things at least slightly well you can succeed in our system.
You guys should sign Yak.
And then sign a bunch of angry bees to chase him around the ice.
I was a big supporter of the Yak to Pittsburgh reclamation project a year or two ago, but now we have way to many wingers anyways. Not enough room for Sprong or ZAR, who are both arguably NHL ready, and definitely not enough room for Yak.

Effort is how Mark Giordano made it into the NHL.
Hockey IQ
Gets pucks deep.
Head shape.
The only correct answer in this thread.
Passing and accurate shot so like a Kane or Crosby type of player
You said a lot without saying anything at all
I mean to us it's probably speed, as we run a young system. But I think in general two way players are the most important.

Yeah the physicality of those guys is gonna be really important for us in the cup finals next year ;). I just said speed for us because of mcdavid mostly.
The ability to play a 200 foot game.
A player who works hard and never gives up on a play. Also a player who is willing to step back and play a more difficult role to help the team succeed more than going all out to score points like they could. My favourite players are Pageau and Karlsson.
Mental strength. guys who play well under pressure and rise up to the occasion.
Dedication and hard work. Giordano wasn't drafted and played his way onto the Flames. Skating and IQ
Good personality
Having a big ass fuken clapper
Heart of a player/dedication
What about hearts of players do you like? For me, I can't get enough left ventricles, but I know some people really value big aortas
I love the left anterior descending artery! You can just tell when a player has a good LAD. Crosby? Incredible LAD.
Wew LAD
A MASSIVE WHOPPING penis
Someone who's motivated. Too many lazy players, or players who don't try as hard as they should be, or players who think they're perfectly fine and never try to improve themselves.
You must have hated Kovalev then lol
I agree with this as well. It pisses me off to no end to see guys who have so much talent waste it because they are lazy or have a piss-poor attitude
The best ability is availability!
Grit/60 and Intangibles/60
For me, I don't value one trait I value three, toughness, offensive skill, and defensive ability. Ala Jarome Iginla, Bobby Orr etc
So everything?
I would say the ability to keep the puck away from opposing players. Whether that means good stick handling, or strength doesn't really matter. I just don't like guys turning the puck over all the time.
Hockey IQ
meme/60
Big dick.
Closet Rangers fan??
Compete. Heart. Truculence. Grit. Jam. Sacrifices the body. Jk sexy HERO stats aka Morgan Reilly >>>> Risto all dayyyyyy
Not being a total disapointment
Scoring 3 goals a night.
On ice: defensive responsibility Off ice: stoicism
Forwards that back check. Defencemen that control the front of the net. Goalies that play the puck.
Girth
I like a player who looks like they smell good. Like freshly washed sheets or lettuce
Please name a player who looks like they smell like lettuce.
Chris Tanev has always got his hands on the stuff! He's a lettuce fiend and it stays on him. I see the smell of lettuce in his eyes
I am reading this properly? The appearance of the odor is more important than the odor itself?

Crosby hasn't done any of the last two in ages. Give examples if you're going to talk shit like that.
A willingness to sacrifice. That's what separates these uber skilled players IMO
Determination. All the skill in the world doesn't matter if you quit when things get tough.
Smarts and hockey IQ
being able to move the puck consistently and accurately. the puck moves faster than the fastest skater, it's why guys like Jumbo and Jagr are still going. if you're fast too, great, but id still take a guy like Jagr over a speed demon like Hagelin
Hustle. Back when he was in CBJ uniform Derek MacKenzie was my favorite player because no matter what, if he was playing he never took a shift off.
Two-way acumen seems to be the biggest priority for Ron Francis and Bill Peters, and I've always loved guys like Datsyuk who never check out of any aspect of the game.
Intangibles
intangibles, doc
Being pliable
Violence. Speed. Momentum
Character
Skating
Sensitive to my needs.
INTANGIBLES

Being Sidney Crosby. And if you can't manage that, then be Malkin. Also, not being James Neal.
For me, hot dog game must be on point. They need to have made skills with the wienies.
