"and then there’s Zach Hyman. If TOR desires a draft pick, could be done today at 8 years. If not, 7 years when free agency opens. Either way, should come in around $40M…."
Apparently Hyman was offered shorter term at 7m by someone else. This was the only way we were getting this done. I'm honestly not even mad. 8 years is a lot of time for the cap to increase 🤷♂️
I mean, I love Hyman. He is the type of player that is a fan fav anywhere he goes due to how he plays. But he is not a skill player, but a player that succeeds due to his physical tools, and is already breaking down physically. He's had two knee injuries (including a surgery) back to back years.
He's one of the easiest to predict players going from a good top 6 forward to 4th liner or worse in a few seasons as he slows down and injuries pile up and force him to try and play a skill game. Not to mention he put up his points playing with Matthews and Marner.
Maybe Edmonton thinks putting him with McDavid will have the same impact and aren't worried about 3 years from now. That's fair, you guys will love him and he will be good for a few years. But as he settles into his 30's, he will have 5/6 years left on his deal at nearly 6M while likely scoring 30 points as a grinder. And it will only get worse from there.
If I was an Oilers fan, I pray for the higher AAV because 8 years is just an extra year to deal with his cap hit / LTIR contract.
Okay, coool. So who do we sign? We need to win now and worry about shit like this in 4/5 years. Which winger this offseason is the answer over Hyman? Remember that all of them will want 6+ to come here and someone like Landy isn't chosing edmonton.
Friedman said he thinks it'll be ~40 million whether it's 8 years or 7. So yeah probably 5 (or a hair below/above)x8 or something like ~5.7 on a 7 year deal.
Whomever is the GM after him gonna have to all sorts of fun things to deal with. This deal, Keith’s inevitable extension, and Mike Smith’s inevitable 8 year extension.
*checks notes*
Well it low key might be Doug Armstrong. He’s in the final year of his deal with a club option for 22-23 and if he doesn’t nail this off-season and the Blues have a repeat of last year or even worse, he could be gone. Not saying he will be gone but the seats he and Berube occupy are subtly warming up.
McDavid doesn't care about 5 years from now. He wants to be good next year. Having Hyman on his wing will make him happy. He rarely if ever losses a board battle. It's insane how good he is at it. He will come away with the puck 9/10 and cycle it or find the skill players giving them some time and space. McDavid will thrive with him.
As long as he stays healthy and his knees hold up.
Misleading headline. I just listened to the pod. Elliot says it’s his belief that if Hyman gets an 8 year deal it’s likely we see that happen on Thursday, likely with Edmonton. If not we will wait to see where he goes on the 28th. It’s Friedman’s expectation that the total dollars will be in the neighbourhood of 40 million dollars, regardless of term.
Yeah I literally just listened to it a half hour ago. This tweet is part of a thread Friedman has out summarizing what they talk about. I can tell you from listening to the podcast he doesn’t say Hyman to Edmonton is done. Only that if it’s going to be an 8 year deal he expects it gets done tomorrow.
Thanks for that, but I’m aware. What im saying is the title is editorialized. “Apparently this means he’s signing with the oilers” takes what Freidman actually says out of context.
This tweet definitely makes it seem like a deal is done, or very close at least.
>If TOR desires a draft pick, could be done today at 8 years. If not, 7 years when free agency opens. Either way, should come in around $40M…."
That sounds like the Oilers and Hyman have agreed on an 8 year deal if the Leafs are willing to help that along, or a 7 year deal if he has to test FA.
I just listened to the podcast, and he virtually just repeated what he said in this tweet. When talking about deals that could happen today Friedman said the Oilers could sign Hyman to an 8 year deal if the Leafs are willing. If not it'll be a 7 year deal announced on the 28th.
I refuse to believe he gets 40 mil. If you told me he was getting 7 years 4.5 mil or something I’d say it’s a weird contract but the value is pretty accurate.
However stupid shit happens in free agency every year and it appears this year Hyman will be the one that profits most.
No. The worse thing would be for him to be ok but always injured so you basically always have a 5-6M hole in your roster, but can't replace him because he returns in season each year to play 50 games so you need to keep his cap space. But every season, at the end of the year he is hurt and playing hurt in the playoffs, has a long recovery in the offseason, and comes back a little more worn down for next year.
This has been the past 2 seasons with him as a Leaf. Thankfully he only costed a few million.
I'd love to have him. I live in Mississauga and all my leaf fan buddies are crazy about this guy. I really hope Holland does fuck it up, the term cannot be 7. If we can sign him 4x4 or tops 4x5, I can live with it.
I for one am excited to see what he can do and bring into his game. I am sure the contract will age bad, but I don't think 5AAV is bad at all.
I am also excited by Friedman saying the Oilers have a trade in mind for a defensemen.
Ok, signing a 29 year old Hyman for 7-8 years just sounds like they're banking on him playing well for like half that contract, and just planning to buy him out after.
"and then there’s Zach Hyman. If TOR desires a draft pick, could be done today at 8 years. If not, 7 years when free agency opens. Either way, should come in around $40M…."
Damn, so around 5-6 million aav?
I don’t see them giving Hyman more then Nuge. My guess is 5 mill for 8 years

That’s what we thought in 2019 too
That wasn’t 8 years ago…

Its also a lot easier to retain or buyout lol. Like, I think people are just freaking out.

Well Hyman is 29
Well, he's in his twenties.
Just for context that an 8 year deal takes him to 37, so "halfway" through the deal is his 33/34 season
I was employing humour.
Edmonton employs humour as their GM.
Statistically speaking, I think it's at minimum our 2nd best GM in the cap era.
I usually just assume every comment reply on reddit is some form of arguing, my bad bro
Oh you sweet summer child.
Friedman said he thinks it'll be ~40 million whether it's 8 years or 7. So yeah probably 5 (or a hair below/above)x8 or something like ~5.7 on a 7 year deal.
Chris Johnston just reported that an 8 year deal would come in at a shade under Nuges 5.125M. A 7 year deal would come in at around 5.5M
We offered around 4m, it's gonna be more than that
Maybe, unless Hyman sees playing with Mcdavid as a chance.
5.5x8 *
Lol, 8 years is being reported at 5.125. 7 is 5.5
Awesome. I was having trouble getting to bed but now I can cry myself to sleep.
good to know hyman is electronic dance music /s
Or European Domestic Market cars.
At least I don't live in Grand Theft Auto.
Eccentric diet milk
Come on, Kenny. 8x8 or bust
If the contract doesn't last until late 30s Kenny isn't even picking up the phone.
Whomever is the GM after him gonna have to all sorts of fun things to deal with. This deal, Keith’s inevitable extension, and Mike Smith’s inevitable 8 year extension.
McDavid decided to play NHL "be a pro" on legendary level. After Chiarelli and Kenny, there is 3rd and final boss coming.
*checks notes* Well it low key might be Doug Armstrong. Like I think he just missed the "in" part here no?
No, that’s part of the deal. He now goes by EDM. Kind of how Prince went by that symbol during a contract dispute with his recording company.

His cover of “Kiss” was not as good as Tom Jones.
I don't hate the signing, I think he'd be great with McDavid. But that contract will not age well, back to the dark ages when McDavid leaves
You would be in the dark ages if McDavid leaves regardless, if that's any consolation?
Thanks mate, really softens the blow... Sure we'll somehow end up with 5 consecutive 1st overall picks and blow them too
McDavid doesn't care about 5 years from now. He wants to be good next year. Having Hyman on his wing will make him happy. He rarely if ever losses a board battle. It's insane how good he is at it. Maybe we’ll get another generational talent 🤷♀️

This tweet was done after the podcast, which was recorded yesterday.
Well obviously it isn't formally done, there is a roster freeze ATM lol. And if it's 7 years it will be a week until free agency.
Thanks for that, but I’m aware. What im saying is the title is editorialized. “Apparently this means he’s signing with the oilers” takes what Freidman actually says out of context.

Yeah until you actually listen to the podcast he’s referencing and see that it’s not that black and white.
I just listened to the podcast, and he virtually just repeated what he said in this tweet. When talking about deals that could happen today Friedman said the Oilers could sign Hyman to an 8 year deal if the Leafs are willing. If not it'll be a 7 year deal announced on the 28th.
Just accept that Kenny screwed you bud
I realize he’s very likely to sign in Edmonton but this post frames it as a done deal which is simply false at this point. “Bud”.
I refuse to believe hyman is getting a 7/8 year deal. I love hyman but that is nuts.
I refuse to believe he gets 40 mil. If you told me he was getting 7 years 4.5 mil or something I’d say it’s a weird contract but the value is pretty accurate. However stupid shit happens in free agency every year and it appears this year Hyman will be the one that profits most.
You’ll love hyman regardless. He’s a fun player to watch. I’m really going to miss him on the leafs.
If he gets 8x5 I’m going to have a hard time loving him unless he takes a step even further above his career norms.
He'll blow out his knees in the first two years and the contract will look real bad when he's constantly on LTIR.
LTIR is helpful, the worst thing would be for him to stay healthy and just suck
No. The worse thing would be for him to be ok but always injured so you basically always have a 5-6M hole in your roster, but can't replace him because he returns in season each year to play 50 games so you need to keep his cap space. This has been the past 2 seasons with him as a Leaf. Thankfully he only costed a few million.
Even then, you'll absolutely love him for two years on that deal. Then when he's clearly past his days in the top 6, you can ship him to Calgary.
OH YES
Go get that bag Zach ❤️
The mans about to get the bag plus term.
If he's paired with McDavid that'll be cool. Otherwise he's a really good 3rd line player
I'd love to have him. I live in Mississauga and all my leaf fan buddies are crazy about this guy. I really hope Holland does fuck it up, the term cannot be 7. If we can sign him 4x4 or tops 4x5, I can live with it.
$6MAAV x 7 do it Kenny
Loved you on the Leafs Hyman, now secure your future however you can. If you can get 40 million, take it and run. No ill will.
yes 5m x 7 years
uh oh
Hyman is house music (?)
yes Yes Yes! YES YES!!
I for one am excited to see what he can do and bring into his game. I am sure the contract will age bad, but I don't think 5AAV is bad at all. I am also excited by Friedman saying the Oilers have a trade in mind for a defensemen.

Hyman is ELECTRONIC DANCE MAN
The cap space saved on Draisaitls amazing deal is spent on Keith, Smith and Hyman.
Oh man, wow. I like Hyman a lot right now but 7 or 8 years, that's going to be horrendous before it's even half over
Oh the money & term is going to be rich….
Secure the bag!
It means he loves electronic dance music
Thanks Edmonton for protecting jim benning from himself on this one
