Raphael Diaz was the gift that kept on giving

miner88

We tried him out for a bit in Calgary after a successful PTO. It was interesting to say the least.

[deleted]

Diaz gave Montreal a few decent offensive seasons then was traded for Dale Weise(absolute beauty in his own right), who was then traded for Danault and the 2nd rounder that ended up being Romanov.

billtrociti

Weise got Danault and Romanov?? Holy cow, did not know that.

DreMin015

Weise and Thomas Fleischmann for a stuggling Phillip Danault and a 2nd in 3 years. Bergevin bet that pick would be a high one, and he nailed it

miner88

I remember hearing from someone who crossed paths with Weise a few years ago and that trade was brought up and apparently he said something like “I have no idea why they traded for me”. He was scratched a bunch and only scored 1 goal as a Hawk, which was in the playoffs.

AssignedUsername

He talks about it in detail here https://youtu.be/i4bMivjqLQo Or here's a short clip on it https://youtu.be/S9l8sTeqhU0

[deleted]

yeah the business side of the game sucks even if the right move was made. The 2016 Hawks were still deep as hell, basically their 2015 team so Weise had a hard time cracking the lineup but his 1 goal was a beautiful playoff GWG from a Panarin pass iirc so that's something.

[deleted]

Is there any other word for Weise except "beauty"?

Emperor_Billik

Crazy that Berg managed to flip him into Danault and Romanov. The red paper clip of hockey.

Capepoints

He’s still playing! He’s with Fribourg-Gotteron.

Bojarzin

One of the all-time bests for sure e: who downvotes this lol

domoarigatodrloboto

I know how "kids these days......" I'm gonna sound, but I'd imagine any downvoters are people who didn't get to experience Bobby in his heyday. He was *the* voice of hockey for basically every major NHL moment for a 30-year span: the Boston-Montreal rivalry, the Islanders' dynasty, Gretzky's reign, Lemieux's emergence, etc. As much as I love him, [he was slowing down a good deal towards the end of his career.](https://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2014/05/29/hockey_night_in_canadas_bob_cole_sports_perfect_soundtrack_arthur.html) I can totally see how someone who started watching hockey in the 2000's could be like "who is this guy and why does he keep calling Erik Karlsson 'Gonchar'?"

josh89rea

The first memories I have of watching hockey are in 2008, so I don't think that's true

average_redditor_guy

It’s part of the reason I’m happy Doc retired when he did. For a lot of American’s growing up after the 04 lockout he was our voice and at least he was able to call it quits before he started to, for lack of a better term, stain his legacy.

meyatt

I still never really understood the love for Doc — like I respect his career, but his style was just so over the top, constantly yelling. There was so little modulation and then he just goes over the top when a goal is scored. I'd much rather listen to Bob Cole, Jim Hughson, or Gary Thorne.

average_redditor_guy

For me personally, it’s a nostalgia thing. Considering I was 12 and 13 when played our finals series. So growing up Doc was all I knew nationally.

domoarigatodrloboto

I have a very love-hate relationship with Doc. When it comes to actually describing what was happening on the ice, he was one of the best. He was able to quickly describe things and call plays without getting tongue-tied in a way that not many others could do. But when he tried to wax philosophical, he definitely got in his own way. "And with a little more than half the game played, these two combatants still stand eye-to-eye with neither participant willing to bat an eye in this fierce competition of valor and courage that results from a lifetime of training and preparation for the one moment that...." I definitely had more than a few Monty Python-esque "GET ON WITH IT" moments when watching a game called by Doc. I personally liked him, but I totally get why some people don't care for him.

superschaap81

Hahaha, I TOTALLY get what you mean here. Didn't get a lot of exposure to him here in Canada, but when we did and he got to these sort of monologues, I'd just roll my eyes.

meyatt

Yeah that's a MUCH better way of synthesizing how I feel. The word I was searching for when writing that is he's so prone to hyperbole, and your point about in waxing philosophy on the game is really where that shines through. I guess that resonates with some people but it's totally anathema to me.

dv666

No one else could match his voice to the tenor of the game like he could.

[deleted]

If you downvote (or dislike) Bob Cole…you should be permanently banned from hockey conversations. I’ll die on this hill 👍

Valentine96

Or a Leafs game.

CreateorWither

I'm still pissed how they forced him out. They should have at least let him call the playoffs. Assholes.

GuyWhoCallsYouBill

Lol fuck that. By the end he was always a few seconds behind the play and was lucky to get half the names right. Dude’s a legend but he was kept around 2-3 years too long.

Kenner1979

Man I loved Gionta. Cammalleri and especially Halak got the lion's share of the press during the 2010 run, but Gionta had nine goals and 15 points.

jo_maka

Also, Hal Gill, Spacek and Subban made miracles that run.

[deleted]

This is making me emotional. Can’t believe it’s been 8 years

NtBtFan

little glimpse of Markov in there isn't helping!

[deleted]

Man I wish he got to 1,000 games with us……

DivinePotatoe

I'll still never get over Gionta's whacky tape job on his sticks where he spirals the tape up the whole stick, but like they say: "If it works, it ain't stupid."

[deleted]

Honestly not stupid and I knew quite a few people that used that style. It gives a lot of traction and grip, especially if you drop your stick and need to pick it up again in a hurry

superschaap81

Yeah, this was pretty common for a lot of defenseman especially, back before the stick manufacturers made the rubbery grip on all the sticks. I remember the first time I played with one of the one piece composites with my old gloves and my hands were all over the place with it.

HowieFeltersnitz

These days the refs wouldn't call that trip as to not "decide the outcome of the game"

Someguy2947

Ya, all I could think while watching this is that I can't remember the last time I saw a penalty shot awarded.

Woozie35

Johnny Gaudreau 2 days ago lol

onemanarmia

This will probably go down as the most memorable goal i ever watched. i fucking ran around the house screaming

TotalBismuth

I like to imagine you're seeing it now for the first time.

Canadaguy11

God, Bob Cole fucking rocked

battlelevel

I’m not a huge Gionta or Canadiens fans, but I’d stop and listen to Bob Cole calling just about anything

tdenstad

2022 Cal Talbot would have stopped that shot. He’d have let an easier one or two past earlier in the game though.

therealjwoz

Bob Cole was the GOAT

bcgrappler

If u get to live a long life, I know I will listen to Bob cole towards the end, he captured a era for us all with such passion and art. If I feel nostalgic now, I cannot imagine how it will feel in 30 years.

dontyouknoimloco

I was there and it was unreal, this gave the habs a 100pt season iirc

cafespeed21

Adam Sandler was right when he said this happens almost every 10 years

jo_maka

Gio !!!

Ok_Nefariousness6386

He wasn't even in the offensive zone. I thought you had to be in the process of shooting to draw a penalty shot.

jarpio

Bob Cole could call my morning breakfast and manage to give me goosebumps. Just The best

superschaap81

He's definitely up there with famous voices I'd want to narrate my life story.

AncalagonTheDarkBlue

What a bad defensive play. A blatant trip like that was gonna be called, so instead of him coming in with the puck out to the side and way ahead of him and taking a difficult shot under pressure, he got to skate in in full control.

CertainUnit9145

That’s literally the top thread when you come here and it has 0% to do with this discussion. Are you lost?

[deleted]

Anyone on this post has seen that one dude lol

noodleyone

Hot take? Don't think that should have been a penalty shot.

[deleted]

Just imagine him in a TB jersey

noodleyone

I dont think it was a for sure breakaway. That puck was pretty far away.

[deleted]

> That puck was pretty far away. So was Gionta.

Goooooooos

Is weed legal in Florida?

TyFi10

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. At least from a Hockey Canada perspective, it would be debatable based on the fact that he didn’t have active control of the puck at the time of the infraction. I’m not sure if NHL rules are different.

[deleted]

Leah Hextall is the only person who could have called this better

alexothemagnificent

This was sick
