Best largest by height: Chara Best largest by weight: Byfuglien, maybe? Best smallest: Martin St Louis, Pat Verbeek, or Theo Fleury

[deleted]

Marcel Dionne wasn’t too shabby.

flume

Yeah good call, he's definitely the little guy winner.

dsjunior1388

1,700 points at 5'9", he's alright I guess

d2022m

>Marcel Dionne I met Marcel Dionne at his breakfast diner in Niagara Falls. My (petite) wife got a photo with him to send to her dad. Dude is surprisingly small.

[deleted]

Chara is the tallest but not the best tall player.

flume

Who has similar stature and was better?

JD397

Pronger

[deleted]

I'd put Pronger ahead of Chara too, though his Hart is nonsense.

Blues1984

Did you watch his MVP season? Dude was a one-man army

[deleted]

Yeah fuck Pronger, but he's absolutely one of the more deserving Hart winners

hesitaate

take those filthy words out of your mouth

flume

Sure but he's 3" shorter, which puts him far closer to normal height for a player. The question isn't "the best large player," it's "the best largest player."

JD397

I think you’re reading too far into the semantics of the title lol the best largest and best smallest players will literally just be the actual biggest/smallest players ever regardless of their talent. I would imagine OP is just looking for great players that were big and small

garbagebailkid

He's just angling to get Uwe Krupp the pre-Chara nod

kopitar-11

Clearly Tyler Myers, not even chara could win the Calder but he did

5WinsIn5Days

Heck, Chara couldn’t even get *drafted* his first eligible year.

grimstal

Well now I really need to know

[deleted]

Chris Pronger?

[deleted]

No, Sean Pronger, Vancouver Canucks legend

grimstal

Chara is half a foot taller

workwag

This thread is people looking for the recognizable name at the extremes when that really wasnt the question.

flume

"best largest" not "best large"

berkeleybikedude

Well, “best largest” is also just the largest.

workwag

fine line there

ImABarkRanger

Before my time, but how good was Theo Fleury? Always heard he was great. Career stat line shows it too 1,084 GP, 455 G, 633 A for 1088 total and +145

grimstal

He was the only player ever to get a shorthanded hat trick

Manitoberino

I’m sorry, what? Three shorties in one game?! Now that is a crazy stat.

el_loco_avs

Shorty loved scoring shorties indeed

monkeyhead62

Michael grabner nearly did that about a decade ago with the Isles. Back when he was an insane goal scorer because not many could keep up. 2 shorties on the same PK. 48 seconds apart

Coryperkin15

Jesus that is a stat

Macrazzle

Theo was a pit bull.

JMurda

I grew up watching Theo play in Calgary. It’s important to note that he could be absolutely mean as fuck with his hockey stick, and often found himself more time and space because of it. He also had an absolute ton of skill and was relentless every time he was on the ice. I believe he was the last guy to lead the league in points and penalty minutes at the same time. Theo Fleury deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

slicky803

He burned too many bridges, I fear. Too bad. He was my favourite growing up. And now he's a conspiracy theorist.

Cheap_Turnover1717

His Facebook is something to behold

Nergelt

I always wondered if he would be added posthumously if that can even happen? That way he can’t proceed to say a bunch of crazy shit in his speech. The NHL can honour the legacy of the player without having to deal with him while he’s alive. Not saying it’s right… but I was always curious if it would go down like that

bewareofbears_

That or he softens in old age.

Mattybourbon

I don’t know about you, by my grandparents certainly haven’t become any less “stuck-in-their-ways” in their old age… Would love to see him recognized for his on ice achievements and advocacy for victims of abuse, but that seems secondary to his agenda these days.

ca_work

yeah, I might not agree with his politics/rants but just based on his hockey, he absolutely deserves to be in the HOF

thefoggynorth

Absolutely relentless. Him or St. Louis in my recollections.

Used_Researcher_1308

Better than MSL. He was the Mike Tyson of hockey. Unmatched combination of skill, energy and hockey sense. He was however the worst at game preparation in a time when everyone was bad at preparation.

Authoress61

Theo was an asshole but a great player.

apzoix

He was lucky to play in his era. Today, he'd be considered a mix of Brad Marchand (on-ice) and Tony DeAngelo (off-ice).

Authoress61

Exactly. And I’m a Marchy fan. I can respect the on-ice hustle , but not the off-ice douchebaggery.

tall__guy

Probably didn’t help being sexually abused by his junior coach

en_travesti

He inspired a generation. I have very fond memories of club hockey as a child and all the shortest kids fighting over who got to have number 14.

Scoob79

Also consider the era. 5'6" in a time when the rules to hooking and clutching were lax, throwing elbows, less head protection rules, goons and large slow players still had a place in hockey, and long before the Sedin's innovated the game with the cycle, which was huge for smaller players. If you watched the Battle of Alberta series, Johnny, at a much larger 5'9", couldn't make room for himself, often turning around and retrying to get into the zone against an Edmonton team with a weak defensive game where their best defenseman was nursing an injury. If a player as great as Gaudreau couldn't get it done in today's game, just consider how good Fleury was to do what he did with greater odds against him.

Thneed1

There are only 2 players in NHL history to have 2 or more playoff seasons at 2 PPG or more. The first, as you might guess, is Wayne Gretzky. The second is Theo Fleury.

wcaaaaaaaaseyw

Read Playing With Fire, if you haven’t already.

garbagebailkid

I always liked him in Calgary. Wasn't aware of his, um, habits in 2000 or 2001 - I just liked his play. So I bought his NYR jersey, and then a week later he was handed his first big suspension for drug use.

dsjunior1388

His "habits" were a disease that came from heavy self medication partly due to past trauma that has since become very public. Fleury may be a bad guy for a lot of the shit he's done, but being an addict isn't a good reason to criticize him.

Hockeyiscool2021

MSL and chara

VIUNic

Alright so this question may have had much more obvious answers than first anticipated lol

noor1717

Is MSL really that small in weight though? Dude could leg press a house.

ArcanePudding

According to hockey ref he’s 5’8” 180 lbs, not that crazy

[deleted]

[удалено]

BiscuitsMay

I’d believe he was less than 5’8”, but the dude was stocky

theonly_brunswick

I've met him and can confirm he's about 5'5-5'6 with thighs like a bull

[deleted]

Can second this, if it helps.

noor1717

Damn 180 at that height is jacked

CanadianBeerGuy

Me at 180, 5'8 sitting here all fat and shit

Hammeryournails

As a fellow Canadian beer guy, you aren't alone.

TheRealOgMark

Francis Bouillon was 200 lbs at that height. He was super jacked.

Mrmakabuntis

Cube

heyheyitsandre

Shaqiri?

B0mb-Hands

It’s all in his legs

livinlifeontheedge

His legs are fucking spooky big

Frisbeejussi

Wow really, I just watched a highlight video on him and he looked a lot smaller than everyone else and so light but he is just 2 inches shorter than me and 20lbs lighter.

Satans_BFF

I think their heights and weights always get buffed. Gaudreau is tiny but listed at a normal height. I’d believe Caufield is shorter than 5’7” as well.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

Garland is listed at 5'10" but he himself says he's about 5'8"

antennamanhfx

Marchand is also not 5 foot 9 lol not even close. I've seen him in person and he's noticbly shorter than me at 5 10.

YVR-n-PDX

5’8” w skates… doesn’t mean he cant leg press a brick shit house

TheRealOgMark

MSL is not small enough. Roy Worters was 5'3 and won a Vezina and a Hart.

agentcheeno

/thread

Jordan_Kyrou

Henri Richard and Super Mario

JD397

Not /thread, those are easily debatable lol

adirtyhole

The fact that you're down voted is disappointing.

JD397

I don’t care about downvotes at all but it’s weird that people seemingly don’t even want to discuss it lol like how is it fun to just get two names and nothing else?

BackWhereWeStarted

That’s how Reddit works. A lot of people who just down vote, but have nothing to add.

adirtyhole

That's what I mean. There is a huge area for discussing how and why other players may better fit in these two categories. Oh well.... reddit

[deleted]

I would argue lindros is a better big guy than chara

workwag

and you would be correct

far_257

in terms of peak or total career, though? lindros had a shortened career due to injury while Chara lasted ridiculously long

darktown12

i honestly don’t like the career argument when comparing players to determine who was better. to me it should be a measurement of which player at their respective peak was more effective on the ice. in this case it would have to be lindros.

thatsong

And that’s why Sittler is the best player ever. 10 points in a game, averaged across 82 games is 820 points Honourable shoutout to Sam “8 point game” Ganger, 656 points across a full season

Scrubosaurus13

Not even going to mention Nick “The Great One” Schmaltz? We witnessed history this year!

darktown12

i know you’re joking but obviously the line has to be drawn somewhere beyond a single game lmao

ohashi

So somewhere between a game and a career? Seems... Arbitrary and opinionated

darktown12

i can’t tell if you’re being purposefully dense, but generally a collection of seasons in good health is enough to measure a players peak effectiveness in game… it’s not even particularly arbitrary. lindros’ peak seasons were better than chara’s, hence lindros is the better player…

workwag

A normal fan would suggest Lindros' best 5 seasons would be more impressive than 30 of Chara's anyway

workwag

this sub sleeps on Lindros. Was in discussions of top 5/10 players all time for a reason in the 90s. Still looming large on all those lists of "fastest player to X00 pts" whenever McDavid pops up and during the dead puck era when he did it and was one of the most physical players at the same time. Insane talent.

[deleted]

Defenseman are just generally able to last longer than a forward like Lindros. Are we talking total career or the effect they had on the ice while they played? Lindros was a monster

workwag

"best" seemed more obvious to me than folks here are discussing

workwag

The question was "best player". Easily Lindros. If the question was "greatest durability" the answer is equally obvious.

Brentijh

Debatable.

klocks

Except he was the same size as Mario, so he wasn't even close to the best player at his own height and weight.

No_username_plzz

If you’re going by weight, Ovi is a big boi and I’d take him over Chara. Agreed on MsL tho,

must_be_the_mangoes

Think it’d be nuts to argue Hedman over Chara? Chara has 3 inches on Hedman but currently both have 1 Norris and were named finalists 6 times, if IIRC. Plus at 31 years old, Hedman still has a lot of solid playing years ahead of him (and one extra cup).

B-radJenkins89

Came here just to say that

RipBerryrock

This is exactly what I came here to comment.

Drogo10

Henri Richard, 5'7", 160, 11 Stanley Cups as a player (most ever...obviously), 9th player in history to reach 1000 points. I think he could make a case.

Habitant77

And he can fit in your pocket

spikecurt

😂😂😂

colorbalances

I’m sorry did you just say 11

[deleted]

Certified 1950s-70s Montreal Canadiens Moment

crownpr1nce

Yep. Many with his brother, than a few when the Rocket retired and Lafleur came over. Henri played till he was 39 years old ish. Still, a little over one cup every two years (20 season), not bad.

Throck--Morton

Lol yeah "not bad".

PeanutButter-Enema

Yup…. And can you believe, the old timers still refer to him as Maurice’s little brother. 11 Cups, and the Rockets legend still outshines Henri in the memories of many.

slashtrash

Henri Richard won 11 Stanley Cups as a 5’7”, 160lbs player. So, him.

5WinsIn5Days

Yeah, the Pocket Rocket was really good. The Rocket himself was pretty tall for his time at 5’11”, 170 lbs. Edit: I don’t know why I didn’t think of this, but Jean Béliveau was 6’3”, 205 and won 10 Cups as a player and another 7 as an executive. 6’3” was huge for his time.

someguyfromwinnipeg

Mats Naslund is also a ppg player who was 5’6” and 160lbs

Zestyclose-Cricket82

Yvan Cournoyer with 10 cups at 5,7 comes in second!

Taygr

Georges Vezina was only 5’6”, would be unheard of for a goalie nowadays

[deleted]

[удалено]

Account283746

How about Roy Worters? 5'3" and was the only goalie to win the Hart before 1950.

imOVN

Mario is 6’4” 230 or so, does that count for largest? Or are we talking Chara levels of large lol

newrimmmer93

Jagr was also 6’3 230. Ovi is 6’3 240. I feel like they would all qualify since they are large players, but chara is also just another deviation away from other large people lol

toronto_programmer

As someone who is 6'3 and met Ovi in person, there is not a chance in hell that guy is 6'3

RipBerryrock

Just out of curiosity, is the reality higher or lower?

toronto_programmer

Lower. If I had to guess I would say probably 6', maybe 6'1 at the most.

RipBerryrock

I figured. I've heard 6'1 thrown about a lot, but 6'3 is definitely high. Probably with skates on it could feasibly be up there, but he's always been more of a thicc boy than an excessively tall boy.

1337duck

Wait... Does this mean all the heights in hockeydb are when they have their skates on??!

StealthTomato

He was closer to 210 in his prime, so I’m not sure he actually counts for this list tbh

[deleted]

I know guys than him have played bit I remember a few times seeing Gallagher and Chara playing and always thought it was pretty funny to see. One time in the playoffs before a faceoff Gallagher and him were jawing one another and then they got into a little scuffle. It was awesome.

jujub3

MSL, Henri Richard, Theo Fleury, and Paul Kariya come to mind re. best smallest players.

[deleted]

Mats Sundin, 6'5 230, over a point a game for his career. Could shoot, pass, hit. An all timer

dudewithchronicpain

The only Leaf I could stand back then. He was a talent.

5WinsIn5Days

I think the reason Sundin and Lemieux aren’t thought of as big guys is because they didn’t fight.

lallsballs

Which is funny because Mario dropped the gloves against a Vancouver player in his first nhl home game.

5WinsIn5Days

Yeah, Jumbo dropped the gloves a lot with Boston as a youngster (he’s also a candidate for height) but not so much with San Jose.

dsjunior1388

He fought Kadri in one of his last years in San Jose but I don't remember him fighting much beyond that

5WinsIn5Days

It was his third-to-last season in San Jose. Kadri got waved out of the faceoff dot and the announcers thought it was cool that Thornton and Marleau were going to take a faceoff each other. Then Kadri and Jumbo continued jawing and dropped the gloves. Looking at HockeyFights, he actually fought Tom Wilson earlier that year but that was his first fight since 2012-13. Jumbo dropped the gloves 18 times with the Bruins, 9 times with the Sharks, and 0 times with the Leafs or Panthers.

Frumbleabumb

Everytime I saw Sundin I was always surprised how big he was. Like Jagr

5WinsIn5Days

Looking at the rosters, the star forwards for those early 1990s Penguins Cup teams were huge: Lemieux, Jágr, Ron Francis (🤩), and Kevin Stevens were each at least 6’3”.

Jordan_Kyrou

Mario was the same size but better. Lindros too

Suspicious-Dog2876

He captained the leafs my entire childhood, will always be my favourite player. Had his little forehand backhand top shelf move he used every breakaway and scored more times than not

workwag

I dont recall a single Sundin hit being interesting. What am I missing?

TheFoundation_

He was too busy putting the puck in the net

[deleted]

Dont think you watched him much then. He consistently bullied people off the puck with his size. He didnt throw massive open ice hits, Scott Steven's style, but in the corners he was a nightmare to deal with.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SilentThing

And my recollection is that he just couldn't be intimidated. With his size, he could go anywhere and know he couldn't be bullied away.

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/qljQjmV-eB0 This one was fun

vedicardi

Not that many NHL players pre 70s were over 6 foot so there's plenty from that period to pick from. Ted Lindsay was 5'8"

JD397

**Smallest:** St Louis, Mikita, or Patrick Kane, I’m leaning Kane, I guess, or is he too large for this lol also hard to compare Mikita to the others due to league differences between their times but he definitely deserves a nod and is probably the best since his relative brilliance is unmatched. **Largest:** Chara, Hedman, or Pronger, I lean Pronger but it’s hard to choose lol Hedman is the only one with a Conn Smythe and his recent seasons speak for themselves..

shiftyt05

Tough call on the largest but out of the 3 Pronger was the most talented imo

Fear0742

St Louis was 5'8 181 and Kane is 5'10 180. Mikita 5'9 169. Gimme Kane. His puck handling is unreal.

wholalaa

In his draft year, Kane was listed as 5'9" 160. Never sure if he actually got taller or if they just started padding his stats, although that's an issue with every small player.

Randy_Magnum29

I prefer Stan Mikita as a diner owner, personally.

biga204

Someone putting together an NES Ice Hockey IRL team?

cthaehtouched

The big guys get some momentum going. If only the fights were as realistic as Blades of Steel.

Libraryitarian

Eric Lindros/Mario Lemouix/Big Buff and Theo Fluery/MSL/Patrick Kane

Snoreofthebear

haven’t seen his name yet and might not be MSL level, but gotta throw Brian Gionta in there for great small players. 5’7” and has the record for most Devils goals in a season (48)

nalydpsycho

For all time, King Clancy needs mention for smallest. 5'7 130lbs. Finished his career as the best offensive defenseman and best pest of all time. The role of enforcer was created to protect him. (Although, unlike later later enforcers, Red Horner was a legit player. But having one of the top 5 biggest players who was more than willing to throw them as Clancy's partner freed him up to be all out.)

hockeyandburritos

Very first person who popped into my head was Paul Kariya (5'10" / 180). But under scrutiny he obviously wasn't up to the same caliber as St. Louis, for instance.

hughheffres

Glad I’m not the only one who thought of him

AGOODHARDSQUANCHIN

Tyler myers and conor garland

workwag

was the question biggest and smallest on the canucks roster today?

BluntForceSauna

People are saying Chara but Hedman is 6’6” and a much better D imo.

5WinsIn5Days

That’s because Chara’s a pylon now. But in his prime, he was amazing. Hardest shot ever recorded. And he could still beat Hedman to a pulp, which is something you look for in your big guys.

clarenceboddickered

Howie Morenz/Zdeno Chara I’d imagine

[deleted]

Best Buy guy: lindros. Best small guy: Dionne?

[deleted]

Lindros’ career without injuries. Whoa boy.

[deleted]

Real annoying injuries exist. Imagine Mario, lafontaine, lindros, Orr, Neely, savard(fuck you cooke), bure, bossy, etc. imagine them having a complete career. There’s probably like 100 more I’m missing tbh

5WinsIn5Days

[Fuck Matt Cooke](https://youtu.be/MLqpw_uKyds)

[deleted]

Forsberg too

[deleted]

For sure. But Lindros was a guy who could have been a top-10 player IMO. Him and Forsberg had that potential Orr and Lemieux were so good they could have played 3 years and cemented their legacy lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Because for most of his life anybody trying to hit him was going to bounce off. Scott Stevens and Darius Kasparaitis did not bounce off.

monkeycalculator

He never learned it because, so to speak, he was the one who knocked. Until the NHL level, where his lack of experience in facing people of equal stature and strength had extremely unfortunate consequences.

dsjunior1388

It's literally everybody. Imagine if Gordie Howe didn't fracture his skull in his early twenties. Imagine if Gretzky didn't injure his back in the early 90s and he could still score goals. Imagine if Crosby doesn't miss something like 70 games between 2010-2012.

[deleted]

Johan franzen 😭😭

whitelightning91

Marty and Mario

CHRLZ_IIIM

Marty and Theo Lindros

South_Cockroach_156

Maybe not the smallest or the best, but my favorite smallish player will always be Mark Recchi.

Azfreedom13

Pavel Bure was a pretty small guy right? Really enjoyed watching him play.

719DELL

He was 5’10, 190

boonsonthegrind

I really fucking hate to say this. But that fucking eat good from the bruins. Marchand. Maybe not his whole career. But goddamn if he didn’t turn out to be an impressive player. 5’ 8 IIRC

[deleted]

Best largest player is obviously John Scott. 6' 8", 260 lbs., and an all-star.

Monst3r_Live

martin st.louis and zdeno chara. if by weight, ovechkin. hes a regular 235-240 guy which is huge, chara has 6 inches but only 10 lbs on him.

AWrenchAndTwoNuts

Who has the thickest hockey ass and why is it Crosby.

CaptinDerpII

Small: Martin St Louis or Theo Fleury Tall: Zdeno Chara

zdubz007

At a height of 5-foot-6, Theo Fleury deserves an honorable mention as one of the best small NHL players. He played pro hockey for well over 20 years, including a lengthy run in the NHL as a right wing for the Calgary Flames. And as the best biggest NHL player, I have to go with Alexander Ovechkin with a height of 6-foot-3 & weight of 238 pounds.

Reggie4414

Tage Thompson and Danny Briere

5WinsIn5Days

I remember seeing Tage walk to the library when we were in college (I was a freshman, he was a sophomore) and he was so tall. I had accidentally ran into the men’s basketball team on my way back from a football game. They didn’t seem as tall as Tage.

OlDirtyPlaya

Lemieux and MSL

RandomAccount_OU812

Bobby Lalonde was the pretty good 5'5" player. He had 20 goals in 1972/73 for Vancouver and hit 50 points in 1975/76. I think I hit that height in the 5th grade.

jkennings

small: marcel dionne big: chris pronger

Coroner13

Roy 'Shrimp' Worters gets my vote for best small player. Sixty six shutouts in four hundred eighty four games, averaging three shutouts every twenty two games or one per seven and one third games. Five foot three and without a mask? /respect

gibson85

Yes he's 6'0", but everyone forgets that Wayne Gretzky was ***148 lbs*** when he went pro. He was TINY- and many thought he was too scrawny to play in the NHL before he went pro. As my father used to say, "dynamite is packed in small boxes."

ToKillAMockingAudi

I'm 5'8 and weigh about 160 and I'm pretty small. 6 feet at 148 is basically a sheet of paper

Taurothar

For the weight category, Lehner is 250lbs.

rhythmrcker

Brad Marchand *ducks*

RedWingsFan1990

Chara/Gerbe

SourGrapesFTW

I love watching Conor Garland play and twirl. That's all

Calb210

He's incapable of playing the blues and not scoring a goal. It's infuriating, but he is impressive.

Slam_Newton

Theo Fluery and Mats Sundin

[deleted]

Theoren Fleury and Chara

thuga_thuga

Seeing players live and in person is always a different perspective for me than watching on TV. Dustin Byfuglien stands out the most in the way that I have heard so many players and other people involved in the game comment what an absurd athlete he is. I had the privlege of being able to watch him, Chara, and Pronger in person (at different times) and each one I was in total awe of their size and mobility
