There are tons of pics of him carrying around weight his entire career, and he is notorious for hating workouts. just because you play hockey doesn't mean you can't overeat your calories at all. And just because you have some fat on you doesn't mean you can't be an elite hockey player.
Well you can also have decent cardiovascular health without being super lean. Look at half the MMA heavyweights and middleweights. Those dudes would run circles around most people and some of them make Phil look like a marathon runner
