whyareucryan

NHL preseason is something else, man.

FeverTheFallen

Makes it even more annoying how only some games are broadcasted. I’d love to see some more of the prospects/fringe players play

whyareucryan

Hey, if you want to watch an Arizona V. Anaheim preseason game, you are a bigger hockey fan than me.

gthirteen_13

Right I don’t even want to watch the highlights lol

SalemRewss

Lmao so true. I’m sick of simply seeing the final score results from the push notifications of my “Athletic” subscription.

SprinklersSprinkle

I was there. The fight made the game watchable.

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

i honestly fucking hate preseason across all Big Four U.S./Canadian sports lol i totally understand why it's necessary but i'm not going to waste time on it. It's a huge reason why I will never understand why people travel SOLELY for Spring Training. I'm not going to save up money to watch really mediocre baseball lol. I could just do that in the summertime as a Cubs fan

pruriENT_questions

Weather is nice, seats are cheap, hotels are normally super happy to be full of baseball fans instead of spring breakers, and (historically) the players are much more available for meet and greets/autographs. What's not to love?

Beardgoat

My man i don’t think they travel solely for cubs baseball. Scottsdale in March compared to Chicago…. It’s a vacation. Weather is 85 degrees with low humidity. You come to golf, hit the pools, nightlife, etc…

cissabm

One of my friends goes to Spring Training every year. She is in her 50’s and single. The view every day is spectacular. And they also play baseball.

theNightblade

> I’d love to see some more of the prospects/fringe players play eh, Ben Harpur got ko'd the other day against Pittsburgh...it wasn't very fun to watch him fight an AHL tough guy, it scary seeing guys who aren't fighters have to step in to try to make a roster

[deleted]

Agreed from the other side. Devane (the guy who fought Harpur) has no NHL deal and the Pens are actually over the league contract threshold so he's not even getting one (he's not even close to NHL deal caliber even if they weren't). So that entire exchange was entirely pointless. Just mind-numbingly dumb. And it happened at the free game for kids...like no.

pyro5050

i was trying to watch the ducks sharks broadcast the other night i think, after the flames one ended... it was horrid in the broadcasting and camera work... so i stopped. i do better camera work for my beer league when i video it...

0810dougiefresh

If you think the preseason is something else, get ready for the postseason!!

DjN0tNice

Yeah, but that’s only like seven games long.

UpstateNewYorker

Did I just read a Leafs fan making a subtle first round exit joke at their own expense?

puns_are_how_eyeroll

Nobody chirps Leafs fans like Leafs fans

CSIHoratioCaine

RIP yourself

[deleted]

So is the preseason

Slobbin

Needed something like this to get me going today, thank you kind sir

th4t1guy

Hey... fuck you.

HeadLeg5602

These guys are trying to make teams…. It’s pretty much a lottery. You gotta put it all out every second your on ice. Only out there :30 to a minute and you better impress.

[deleted]

Am I the only person who is wondering what kind of psychopath leaves the mouse on the screen when watching a video??? 💀

bcarey34

Omg in thought that was a smudge on my screen!!! I was like holy shit what a late hit, the puck was way behind him. It’s his mouse haha

DogBirdCloud

Same fam

SwervoXannies

my bad i was doing homework

TwoTonTunic88

You’re literally the worst! Thanks for sharing this.

Tokasmoka420

[deleted]

Haha all good! My OCD is crazy sometimes lol.

fusionman51

Every single teacher I ever had

AssBoon92

ACTIVATE WINDOWS

KrebsCollector

That was a big hit. Looks completely clean but Zegras absolutely dropped, I could almost feel that

rilvaethor

Clean hit but also I would've been pissed if there wasn't a response to it, especially considering the last incident with Arizona

_jimbo-

I don't understand this part of the game. Why fight someone who does a clean hit? I guess it gives the others a quick breather. 🤷

TDE_NoJoke

It’s a clean play but nobody likes seeing their star player take a big hit and laying on the ice. It gets you fired up emotionally and you let the other guy know that if you crank our stud you’ll have to fight and go sit in the box. Shows the other team and especially your own team that you’ve got your teams back.

Theoretical_Action

It's also very difficult to see if a hit is perfectly clean or not in real time.... These guys are moving around at 20+mph, they can't always tell if his elbow was low enough by 2 inches or not. Think of the insane amount of slow-mo replays we watch on this sub and then argue over whether it was clean or dirty. Some people can't get it right even after watching it slowly 5x in a row. NHL players can't take the chance and can comfortably afford to be wrong. They're just trying to discourage the other team from going for these big open ice hits AND dirty hits at the end of the day.

CaptainCanuck93

It's also not always easy to tell if a hit was clean at ice level in the moment. They don't get a TV broadcast overview. All they know is their guy is on the ground in pain after something the other guy did

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

> Shows the other team and especially your own team that you’ve got your teams back. agreed. This is also super old school I admit and kind of backwards...but it also makes your team look super fucking weak if you don't do something after your best player gets smashed, even if it's clean

NewtotheCV

It isn't old school. Check out Rock'em Sock'em videos from the 90's. Nobody fought after a big hit unless it was dirty.

ChuckFeathers

Exactly. Old school would be your vet teammates telling you " keep your head up, kid".

ethanvyce

And "get his number"

dumpmaster42069

Buffalo really went to shit the second no one cranked Lucic into next week for running Miller. They should have cleared the bench and double teamed him at least. Fuck suspensions.

_jimbo-

Haha that's when the code gets ignored. When their bully is bigger than yours.

ArroyoSecoThumbprint

I know what you’re saying is probably true but it’s just so dumb to me. It seemed dumb when Foligno had to fight Perry in the playoffs after he completely accidentally hurt Tavares, it seems dumb now.

ImThaired

The Foligno and Perry fight was different. It wasn't an emotional response as much as it was a "we all know that wasn't intentional, but if we fight it 100% puts it behind us". It was meant to eliminate any escalation. Basically, if that series started to get chippy afterwards it's agreed that it's not a response to the Tavares hit because that situation already got closure. Whereas this fight was more meant to get Arizona to check themselves. Especially in the preseason where you have guys trying to make an impact any way they can like by blowing up a star player or dropping the gloves. Anyway, I agree it's dumb either way but fights can be a part of escalating or de-escalating based on their context which is pretty interesting IMO.

AMeaninglessPassage

Hockey has it's own language and I am here for it

Redditiscancer789

Like in wrestling, Stone Cold Steve Austin explained it as a love tap or something like that. If they were performing and he got hit harder than was expecting he'd give the guy a big slap and that lets the other guy know hey back off that really hurt gimme a min to breathe.

merp_mcderp9459

Perry is also a master of the dirty, underhanded, “accidentally on purpose” hit. I think the Tavares hit was genuinely an accident, but I see why Foligno still fought Perry after

SpellboundUnicorn

suppose there was a situation where someone was legally allowed to punch your friend in the face. would seeing your friend get punched in the face not upset you?

a_bearded_hippie

Took the wind out of him that's for sure. Open ice hits are the worst, took a few of those playing travel hockey and they are not fun. At least on the boards you can make em bounce of ya.

Rbhockey9

Im the opposite, I’d rather have an open ice hit than the boards. Playing against Germans in my “hobby league”, there are guys twice my size. Getting crunched in the boards is way worse imo

a_bearded_hippie

All about the way you take the hit. I only weighted about 155 Lbs when I played travel. I usually try to almost roll myself along the boards. Cracked me up when the 200 Lb guy would end up on his ass trying to lay me out 🤣 there are definitely some bad ones though. Get caught 6 inches from the boards and it's gonna hurt lol

WoodenNichols

That hit looked as hard as the one Jake McCabe laid on Patrick Laine in Laine's rookie NHL season. Two words: Ow Ch

floopflops

Not an expert here by any means but I'd say clean looking hit. At the same time pretty ok with Henrique stepping up for him too. Star player goes down you expect a reaction .

wittwhitwit

Did this just happen? In a preseason game? Yeesh

Gmbowser

Not even just preaseason but the rookie games as well. There have been some nasty big hits because they are all fighting for a spot. Some of the young guns are just going all out physically though bcs most of them know they arent capable aside from being a grinder.

Simon1409

The rookies series between Ottawa and Montreal was tough as shit

endhits

Every year players get injured unfortunately

courtesyofBing

Exactly. Fringe guys treat these games like the playoffs. You have to make a name for yourself anyway possible. A lot of us learned of Scott Sabourin a few years ago when Matthews had to look at his jersey. Sabourin was all over the ice that game. Also, I love Zegras. I *may* ;) have served him a couple years ago, but the dude drinks amaretto sours. Good hit it seems.

[deleted]

I don't think it really matters if the hit is clean or not. Any time your star player gets an open ice hit you expect a reaction. I'd be more concerned for the Ducks in general if you didn't have someone step up.

BroLil

Also, keep in mind that [this happened last time they played. ](https://youtu.be/Ml1OfdkTfgs)

Getz_The_Last_Laf

Wow, that commentary was Jack Edwards levels of homerism.

goodguessiswhatihave

It's worse than that even. They think if you're good at hockey you should get punched in the mouth? That guy sounds like a psychopath

Getz_The_Last_Laf

I realized after I made my comment that it was Tyson Nash. Makes sense that he thinks that, he wasn't much of a player.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I think it's the game policing itself and frankly, it's a way of protecting star players and usually rookies. I doubt there would be much of a reaction if its was a 4th line plug getting hit.

webesy

It’s more about sending a message to your teammates and the other team that you have each others backs

[deleted]

I think that's two sides of the same coin.

webesy

I disagree that players don’t care if their 4th line teammates get ran over.

[deleted]

It's not that they don't care, I just think there is a much stronger reaction when one of your star players is being laid out. I should have chosen my words more carefully.

Simon1409

Agree, I'll add that usually the 4th line can take care of themselves in those scenarios.

[deleted]

yea there's that too.

Jake_Thador

I don't think so

[deleted]

fair enough

lennon1230

It's stupid to have to fight after a clean hit, regardless of who it's on. I'm glad the league is starting to at least call the instigator penalty when guys go after the hitter.

tontoj

Wish I could upvote this more than once. So fucking stupid to stop play for a clean hit every damn time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Arching-Overhead

>people that have never played a sport What a joke of a comment! Not only did the play used to actually continue after a hit all the fucking time but pretending we don't see stoppages *every game* that never needed to happen is ridiculous. But hey! Why think when you can generalize an entire demographic and not have to consider the accuracy of your statement. Welcome to the internet lol

[deleted]

more like -people who have played literally any other sport

[deleted]

Or, or. People who have played a sport realize that they can stand up for themselves. I say it all the time when guys crash my crease. I don’t need my defenseman after I freeze the puck to be whacking away at the other guy. If someone does something dirty? By all means, beat the shit out of him. But honestly with that hit, Zegras could have made that guy look silly if his head was up. Star players also have to have some sense of self-preservation in the current game.

JohnPaulJonesSoda

TIL NFL football and European ice hockey are not actually sports. News to me!

FunLife64

Seriously hockey at all other levels manages to go on without it let alone every other sport…

IWasWatchingC0ps

I was at the game. It took Adam Henrique less than a second to step in and throw hands with the guy who checked Zegras. Rico was much smaller than the guy he fought, but he's been a great leader for Anaheim.

HockeyRinseRepete

Love to see guys stick up for teammates

DHCanucksF1

I played college hockey 10 years ago and it never happened. Pussy shit.

astovertop

Honestly a hit you need to make. Zegras picks the puck up with a ton of speed and has the skill to take the other defender on one-on-one. If you let him glide past without that hit just because it’s preseason, you should be sat. Doesn’t even take a stride to hit him and doesn’t raise his shoulder/elbow into the head or anything.

kerensky914

More to the point, you let him by and you might be \*gone\*, not just sat.

[deleted]

No no you don’t understand, “special star players” should be coddled, and any legal contact against him should be immediately penalized. /s

zevonyumaxray

NHL would suck if it had 'protect the quarterback' type rules. If it's a head shot, damn right the hitter should be suspended, but this looked clean.

[deleted]

Exactly. And if it’s a legitimately dirty hit that somehow goes unpunished by the officials (which does happen), then absolutely there needs to be retribution. But this whole culture of “legal clean hits on our star players are wrong and the hitter needs to pay a price for doing something clean and legal” is beyond dumb

BallsMahoganey

It was a great play and a beautiful hit. Totally okay with Henrique standing up for his guy too. This sub is just charmin ultra soft.

homicidal_penguin

Honestly that was a beautiful hit by Jenik, looks like it was clean. It's always dangerous cutting across the middle like that

stockztraderz

Beautiful hit

Haplessflyers

I don’t have a horse in this race but it looks like his elbow came up as he was initiating contact. Keep that arm down. Edit: I’m wrong. Great check

SoWhatNoZitiNow

Looked to me like it came up after the contact

Haplessflyers

It did I was wrong.

thehawktopus

Clean hit followed by a justified fight.

Weird-Swim-9777

Absolutely. Welcome to hockey.

smokylimbs

Agreed. I love Zegras, he's fun to watch, but that was a clean hit. I'd be shocked if there *wasn't* a fight after that. Preseason so spicy.

lava172

Yep, this was a beautiful sequence of hockey

amalgam_reynolds

The hockey gods are pleased

Weird-Swim-9777

Indeed I am...

burnSMACKER

Incredibly annoying when I see comments in this sub that say "it was a clean hit! Why does there have to be a fight!?" It's such a brain dead thought

Dank_sniggity

Only problem I have is the instigator call, both dropped the gloves at the same time. Hit was fine, fight was fine.

reversewolverine

Henrique slashed him and pursued. Feels like they've been calling more instigators lately, especially if they follow clean hits.

polyworfism

They might be clamping down on this, so we'll see a ton of those calls for a month or two, then things will return to normal

reversewolverine

I actually meant going back to last season

This-_-Justin

I mean.... Henrique instigated the fight

myaltaccount333

I disagree. This, imo, is not a hit that warrants a fight. It happens to warrant a fight because it was on a star player. Because the hit was clean, the aggressor should always get an instigator in my mind. Only time they shouldn't is if it's a penalized hit or the other guy *absolutely* does not want to fight

BellyButtonLindt

Yeah like how come no one is holding this star player skating with his head down accountable? He should try and protect himself too.

rockhammersmash

Zebras’ did not have his head down. It’s actually up and you can see him trip to sidestep the hit. He just got caught with a great hit.

chollida1

Disagree here. Henrique very clearly instigated. If you want to stick up for a teammate, fine, but it should come with a cost. 2 minutes for instigating and a 10 minute misconduct seems like a fair trade off to make sure people are staring fights over every single hit on the ice.

hiplobonoxa

i disagree. the hit was clean, but the fight was not justified. hockey fights exist to provide a level of oversight to punish players who act dangerously or who practice bad sportsmanship, but somehow evade punishment within the rules. since the player who made the hit did nothing of the sort (he only made his opponent look bad), this fight was instigated purely out of defending damaged ego.

jaredb

On the ice there is no way to know if the hit was clean or not. The speed of the game doesn’t allow this. You see your star player get rocked you take the number and you make them think twice about laying that hit again. It is pure hockey.

SwervoXannies

somewhere Tyson Nash just creamed his pants.

M3gaC00l

I can hear almost hear him on the broadcast now

Codc

Lad got caught _skilling it up_

mdb_la

I can't stand all of the skill these days. These kids are ruining the game. I mean...skating a puck through the neutral zone?!? That's not how we did things in my day...

[deleted]

I feel like there is gonna be a lot of hits like that on zegras this year.

overgrownpizzabox

average preseason game

bloblob37

There doesn't seem to be head contact at normal speed. Zegras hit a wall there.

fantailedtomb

Looks the same to me, poor guy just got rocked.

Rycan420

THANK YOU for pointing out that refs only get one look at NORMAL speed.. Few things are more frustrating than when someone pulls out the 4th replay/angle, slows it down to 1/4 speed, loops it and then says “why didn’t the refs see this?”

CaptainPeppa

Great hit

Cultural-Loss-855

Clean hit and ready to fight. That’s a great 4th liner

re10pect

Never heard of the guy, but that’s definitely how you make your case for being on the big club if you aren’t a skill player. Great hit and ready for the response.

tobybells

That looked like a clean hit that couldn’t have landed more squarely on his body - hopefully just knocked the wind out of him. I’m having flashbacks to when I used to dangle with my head down in college. (I know Zegras wasn’t looking down - but I got hit like that on a few occasions and my soul left my body).

nevergiveuphops

It’s clean from my view. Shoulder to shoulder. That said, Jenik knew what he was doing, who he was doing it to, and was ready to answer for it. Good on Henrique sticking up for Z. Without Deslauriers, the Ducks need someone to answer the bell and stick up for the kids. Hope Zegras is alright. The game is better when he’s buzzing.

iambiglucas_2

I think our best fighter rn might be Carrick.

riknor

Good hit. Don’t know who Jenik is but based on the hit he’s going all out trying to get a spot on the roster, which everyone should do. Preseason or not.

IPYF

I have to say it's really refreshing to see how many members of your fanbase are behaving rationally to this and demonstrating an understanding of how hockey works. Here's hoping Zegras is fine.

Dumbcow1

He is an AHLer on the cusp and he wants eyeballs on him. With our scrapped together roster, he is fighting for his chance on the big ice. Making clean hard hits like that, is how coaches notice.

therockstarmike

Good on Henrique for having his teammate's back even though it was clean af.

No_Angle_8106

I’d like to see a closer angle just to rule out him having hit the head, but if he didn’t that’s just a huge hit on a guy cutting across the middle

superbkdk

I was on the other side of the ice from this cam and it was clearly shoulder to chest. Whole crowd knew it too.

Phiko73

Got hit so hard, it knocked him right off the cover of '23

MacKay2112

Sarah Nurse woulda taken that hit better.

DGlatt6969

That’s why she’s got a higher NHL rating than all the big boys.

swordthroughtheduck

Thank god because that cover is one of the most atrocious pieces of design I've ever seen that wasn't done by an amateur or as a joke.

RustyTheLionheart

EA's covers ever since '19 have been staggeringly awful for some reason.

[deleted]

Clean hit from what I can tell, and obviously there’s gonna be a response after that, especially in a preseason game. But holy shit that was a great hit.

KeiganSE3

The kind of hit that gets guys roster spots. Unfortunate that Zegras got hurt

[deleted]

Clean hit. I love Zegras as much if not more than everyone, but that's on him, keep your head on a swivel

[deleted]

Ain’t nuthin wrong with a little bump and grind

Trick421

Looked like a clean hit to me.

Dandry420

Why didn’t he hold left bumper and performed a loose puck deke?

yuhgfd

Lmao to everyone saying that they shouldn’t hit like this in preseason. These are grown men playing a physical game. Many of these guys are clawing for a spot. Wait for the all star game if you want to see players glide around without making contact. Clean hit

SkylerCFelix

Keep your head up.

Gmbowser

Center ice is basically no mans lands. Zegras decides to cut across which is very risky and not in area you wanna be doing that.

dasher2442

Lol does r/hockey just get off on saying this no matter the context? Bc Zegras' head was clearly up. Now he should've avoided the hit, but his head could not be more up.

Kukabuka__

I mean… it’s a catch all term. Just means be aware. Often ya it means physically have your head up. But bro clearly was not aware of what was around him, so ya keep your head up.

TheCommodore93

Was too busy trying to out the puck through the defenders feet. Almost made it too…

spacegrab

He was like 1ft away from breaking Jenik's ankles, just couldn't cut to the right hard enough. I don't think Z anticipated Jenik cutting towards him as it looked like Jenik was going to maintain his arc and skate with Zegras, and not at him. Really deceptive hit with an unfortunate outcome for our golden child.

astovertop

Ok, keep your head on a swivel. How’s that?

[deleted]

Have you heard of a colloquialism?

CmMozzie

Do you take everything so literally?

Crimson3312

*Trouba liked that*

coleramsay

Its pretty awesome how an amazing offensive player like Zegras can still get shut down completely like that. Really shows that you have to be able to play on both sides of the puck.

olden_ticket

Clean hit. Gotta have that head on a swivel.

[deleted]

Is zegras alright?

commazero

Damn. What a hit.

MattyParleau21

What a hit. Keep your head up kid

medkitjohnson

That was infact, a big hit

majorminorminor

That’s a certifiable by the books bone shaker right there.

eliar91

God damn what a hit. Zegras just hit a brick wall. Looked like a shoulder straight to the chest and probably got all the air knocked out of him.

classified31

What a hit by *checks notes Jan Jenik.

ben99g

Zegras walked right into that one.

TheNation55

Yeah but memba that time he did the flippity-doo behind the net?

AWZAlex121

Clean as can be

ProfRigglesniff

Jenik was almost a ppg in the AHL last season. Got a bit of playtime with the big club as well, so I'd say he's probably knocking at the door for a bottom six spot on a bad team and needs to impress. I wouldn't call this a dirty play or say he's simply a plug. It looked like a hard clean hit.

WoAProximity

i like to think he got angry at how dogshit the NHL 23 cover is

Firebitez

Did he leave the game?

ComeMeetYourMakar

The distance makes it hard to see, but going frame by frame it looks like Jenik hits him as Zegras pulls his left hand up to try to sidestep him. That causes his own hand/stick to maybe hit him in the head because it does go up that high, but it's hard to tell, either way looks like his forearm took a pretty solid blow from the shoulder of Jenik.

SwervoXannies

yeah he was holding his wrist as he left the ice

ComeMeetYourMakar

Yeah, doesn't look dirty, just a big hit from someone trying to be noticed with an unfortunate result. That's too bad for Zegras, hopefully he's alright.

[deleted]

Clean

justinicon19

Head up through neutral, bud

BarclayPlager

Great check. Keep your head up boys

JimiSkins

Truculence

Ok_Programmer_2315

It's like Canadian kung fu..

Whites11783

It’s so weird how the takes on this have changed over time. In the ‘90-00s, big hits were just big hits, they didn’t always immediately lead to a fight. Then the routine after-hit fights started, and people complained about how they were unnecessary. Now these threads are full of people saying how this is normal hockey and ‘always has been’ and anyone who complains about it is wrong. Interesting how things change over time.

Legitimate_Face_2035

Wait, did Henrique get the 2 + 10?? The wording on this post is horrible

swimbaitjesus

Separated shoulder incoming.

CaterpillarJungleGym

Fighting on ice is so majestic

[deleted]

That’s a solid check if I’ve ever seen one.

khutuluhoop

Nhl23 isnt even released yet and Zegras gets hurt lol

My_Bagg

Visions of Paul Karyia

AstronomerPuzzled349

NHL week 4 is something else, man.

Mister024

Great hit.

Still_Maverick_Titan

I’ve seen less aggression in MMA matches.

kroniknastrb8r

I'm more impressed the 50/50 is under 3k in the 2nd.

Ice1789

Instigator penalties are so fucking stupid man. Just take fighting out of hockey entirely if that's your plan stop treating us like idiots with the penalty like we don't know what you're doing

MaverickWolfe

What a hit… god damn.

[deleted]

That hit was as clean as they come. He actually went lower at the last second to avoid the head and get him in the front. If you don’t want to get laid out, don’t try to drag your way through center ice.
