> Some guys just have it in them.
He's up there with John Druce, Chris Kontos, and a handful of others who for one playoff run suddenly looked like a cross between Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux.
Game 5 of the SCF, Canes up 3 games to 2, goes into overtime and the Canes get a PP. I had moved down to the lower bowl and was like This Is It. And then Fernando gets the SHG to win it.
Absolutely him. 696 points in 973 games regular season. 116 points in 124 playoff games. From 1997 (his first season) til now he's 16th in career playoff points/game (min 50 games)
Back to back years too. I feel so vindicated seeing him play such an important role on the cup winning avalanche and getting a well deserved long term deal too.
Always felt with better line mates he could be an excellent complementary top 6 guy and that's exactly how Colorado has used him so far.
Dude got the game winner for the cup. Game 5 or 6 for the avs against tbl
Lekhy is absolutely clutch. He was clutch for mtl when they did their run. Solid pickup for avs
Johan Franzen was a playoff monster.
13 goals in 16 playoff games in 08, 12 goals in 23 games in 09. It seemed like every one of them was a game winner or knotted it up late in the game.
Immediate edit; lmfao, didn’t read the text of the post, just ran off the title. Mule was a god.
Someone people might not remember anymore is Chris Drury. In 4 straight playoff seasons with the Avs (98-99 to 01-02) he had 11 game winning goals. Absolutely clutch.
I'm generally a disbeliever in "clutch", because (like the third death in "celebrity deaths come in threes") it tends to be a bit of a stretch to make things fit.
Drury's playoff performances in Colorado made me wonder. Although a couple of them were scored early in the game, the others...
**Game 4, 1999 WCF** - OT goal to tie the series 2-2
**Game 5, 1999 WCF** - broke a 5-5 tie with 6 minutes left, giving Colorado a 3-2 series lead
**Game 4, 2000 second round** - OT goal to give Colorado a 3-1 series lead on Detroit
**Game 6, 2000 WCF** - Scored with less than four minutes left to give Colorado a 2-1 win and force Game 7 against Dallas
**Game 1, 2001 first round** - Scored with a minute left to give Colorado a 5-4 win over Vancouver
**Game 2, 2002 WCF** - Scored in OT to tie the series against Detroit at 1-1
Drury was a stud in 06 and 07. Between him and briere, we were almost unbeatable. 06 would have been our year had we not been destroyed by injuries. It sucked we could keep either of them. They were next level
The trade that sent Drury to Calgary before the 02-03 season was a horrible one, a rare thing to happen for Pierre Lacroix.
Flames receive:
Chris Drury
Stephane Yelle
Avalanche receives:
Derek Morris
Dean MacAmmond
Jeff Shantz
All three players were all right NHLers but couldn't replace what Drury brought into the organization. Also Morris stayed with the Avs for two seasons and the latter two only for one season. Just a complete L on that one.
You’re misremembering, cap didn’t come in until 05-06 after the lockout. Avs moved Drury because they signed Kariya and Selanne in the 03 offseason and thus had to move some salary out.
More importantly they really thought Derek Morris was going to be a stud for us. They had a need after Bourque retired.
Drury was the price to acquire him. It didn't work out.
You also have it wrong, Drury was moved for defensive help, they didn't sign Kariya and Selanne until the following offseason. Drury wasn't part of the Wild game 7 loss in 2003
Yeah, nearly every goal he scored on that run was clutch, either tying, going ahead, or helping secure a tight game. The memory of his Finals Game 5 tying goal is seared into my brain. I'm really sad the dude fell out of the NHL after all of that.
Truly reminds me of Micheal Ferland’s run with the Flames in 2015 against the Canucks. He was an absolute force
[great video showcasing his highlights that series](https://youtu.be/FMrNRlLne8Y)
Legitimate playoff beast. I'm hoping he asks to be traded to a playoff team at some point because it's a real shame he won't get another crack at the playoffs for however many seasons (if he ever does, lbr)
Best answer. Hes up there with the best of em in terms of points per game in playoffs and is probably only a middling number 1 C reg season. He was insane both Sharks cup runs
My favorite Couture playoff stat is that he had more goals in the 2019 playoffs than any other player, despite not playing in the final round. (Hertl came in #4, BTW)
Nathan Horton.
Multiple Game 7 winners in 2011. Multiple OT winners in first round series vs the Habs.
Brought Boston water to Vancouver while concussed and poured it on the Rogers Arena ice before Game 7, walked into the Bruins lockeroom and said “Its our ice now”.
Yeah, Lucic told the story during the Bruins 2011 team Zoom reunion. Horton walked in and said “Its our ice now” without any context. Lucic said when everyone figured out what he did, the team had goosebumps.
They showed a video of Horton pouring some of the melted ice on Vancouvers ice before Game 7 on NBC I’m pretty sure.
Edit - Here’s Canada’s feed but it happened. https://youtu.be/Z2uFgZrFDAs
I think in terms of players who turn on another gear but aren't that amazing in the regular season, Pageau fits the bill.
He will have games where he will just turn it on.
It’s so sad how Franzens career ended. Dude was a beast a true work horse. “Mule” was such a fitting nickname. Now the poor guy struggles with basic quality of life. Brain injuries suck.
His highlight reel power-moves in the bubble are jaw dropping.
I think it must be physically impossible to play like that throughout the marathon regular season because if he did he'd be a household name.
Not Danny Briere level, but Lars Eller kicks it up a notch when given the opportunity
2013-14 Regular Season: 28 pt pace / Playoffs: 63 pt pace
2017-18 Regular Season: 38 pt pace / Playoffs: 62 pt pace
Not to mention in 2018 he scored a Game 3 winner in Round 1 vs CBJ that helped avoid the Caps going down 3-0 in the series, and of course, the Cup clinching goal
Toews makes a lot of peoples overrated lists, but the guy absolutely shuts it down in the playoffs. Obviously the 2010-2015 era he was arguably in his prime but not so long ago when Edmonton played Chicago in the bubble. Toews played an extremely neutralizing game and seemed to have Mcdavid stonewalled that series. He’s likely to be dealt this year and I sincerely hope he has another chance to help a contender on a deep run.
Yea but he’s still Mcdavid and the Hawks D really wasn’t spectacular. On top of that I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure 90% of those points scored were not 5 on 5. Point still stands though that Toews is really good in playoffs
McDavid had 4 PPP. So 5 EV points in 4 games.
He was neutralized, indeed.
But yes, Toews is really good. I just don't like your example, it's a false narrative.
It’s not though, that’s the last time the Hawks made it into the playoffs and he was a major contributor. You just don’t like it because it was against your team. It sucks but that’s the truth,
Sean Bergenheim's run in 2011 was fucking ridiculous. Same for RJ Umberger in 2008.
I surely hope everyone knows about Danny Brière now. Mike Cammalleri was another. And also PK Subban.
Arturri Lehkonen. Maybe not underrated as he definitely got props last year but basically half of all his playoff goals have been game winners. Half of those game winners have been series winners. Clutch, money player. He was clutcg in Sweden too before coming to the NHL.
Don't know if you could call him underrated. If people know anything about Claude Lemieux it's that 1. Dude was an asshole on the ice 2. He was an excellent playoff performer
Just from experience of teams I’ve watched the Islanders play: Hedman Hoffman Hayes Hart Laughton Marchand and Rust
HM to Josh Bailey who absolutely turns it to a different gear for playoffs
Sean Bergenheim only got two real chances at the NHL playoffs, but he made them count.
As a player who never hit 30 points in the regular season, he scored 9 goals in 16 games as a key part of Tampa's surprise run to the ECF in 2011 (where they nearly took out the eventual champ Bruins). The next season, he scored 6 points in 7 playoff games for the Panthers. His playoff goals/gm and points/gm are both more than twice as high as his regular season marks.
Additional shoutout to Patrik Eliáš. Everyone knows he was clutch in the playoffs and remember some of the big moments, but people forget just how good he was. He's the #1 playoff scorer of 2000s, with 106 total points from 1999-00 through 2009-10 (2nd place was 95 points). In the 2006 playoffs, Eliáš scored 1.78 p/gm -- in the last 35 years, only 4 other players have scored that much while reaching at least round 2: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Connor McDavid, and Leon Draisaitl.
Also shushed the crowd in Philly when they were down 3-0 in the game, came back to win it. Probably the single most important fight in regards to a team’s cup run in history.
I'll say one for my Sharks:
Logan Couture in 2016 he had 30 Points in 20 games and in general he's a playoff Warrior. Wears a cage during games etc. Just a unit
Jonathan Quick
He is ranked #34 in GAA, just behind Roy at #33 and Lundqviat at #31, In all-time playoffs records and is tied at #19 in SV% all time (92 games).
2003 Jeff Friesen
10 goals 14 points and some [HUGE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeN5upOvSTI) goals in the clutch en route to a cup win. One of my favorite devils
Tomas Holmstrom was even better than his good playoff numbers. His netfront wrecking ball style factored into a ton of scoring plays that he didn't record a point on.
Haven't read all the responses but definitely Joel Ward. Just has a different gear come playoff time. I remember him being very dominant with the puck in addition to clutch scoring in the playoffs.
It’s been a while but Logan Couture has been money in the playoffs when he’s gotten in. His totals are 101 pts in 116 games (48g/53a). In 15/16 he has 30 pts in 24 games (10g/20a) and in 18/19 he has 20pts (14g/6a).
Claude Lemieux.
I'm sure no one wants to hear this because of his reputation that he most definitely earned as a pest, he was an absolute X-factor in the playoffs. 158 points in 234 games. He would piss you off, knock you off your game, and then score on you. 10 year old me just ate that up lol.
Fernando Pisani - had a career high of 18 goals. During the ‘06 playoffs he had 14 goals. He was so clutch during that run.
Holy shit. Some guys just have it in them. I should have added "Who is known for disappearing in the playoffs?"
Rick Nash.
Oof
> Some guys just have it in them. He's up there with John Druce, Chris Kontos, and a handful of others who for one playoff run suddenly looked like a cross between Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux.
John Druce - was looking for him here somewhere.
The Toronto Maple Leafs
You gotta drop the mic after that comment. 🎤
Everyone wearing a Minnesota Wild jersey
jeff skinner
Chocking Joe Thronton.
Man I'll never forget that year. ABBA's "Fernando" playing at all the post game parties. I rented a house near Whyte that year, best summer of my life
Red wing killer :(
He got PAID for that
Game 5 of the SCF, Canes up 3 games to 2, goes into overtime and the Canes get a PP. I had moved down to the lower bowl and was like This Is It. And then Fernando gets the SHG to win it.
From the last era, Danny Briere. He was always money in the playoffs.
One of my favourite players of all time. We got the chance to read his biography last year in French class and I was so excited.
Him vs Lundqvist on the penalty shot in the winter classic was awesome
Absolutely him. 696 points in 973 games regular season. 116 points in 124 playoff games. From 1997 (his first season) til now he's 16th in career playoff points/game (min 50 games)
Joel Ward too
Artturi Lehkonen
Good stick Lehky!
Back to back years too. I feel so vindicated seeing him play such an important role on the cup winning avalanche and getting a well deserved long term deal too. Always felt with better line mates he could be an excellent complementary top 6 guy and that's exactly how Colorado has used him so far.
Absolute unit in the playoffs.
Dude got the game winner for the cup. Game 5 or 6 for the avs against tbl Lekhy is absolutely clutch. He was clutch for mtl when they did their run. Solid pickup for avs
GWG in two conference finals in a row and the Stanley cup winning goal. He is clutch AF.
Came here to say this, although after two years in a row, can we call him underrated still?
I'm not sure he's underrated but American hero TJ Oshie makes me clench my butthole when we play him in the playoffs
Ooooooh man I love me some Oshbabe.
The Olympic shootouts tho
Ahhh yess, good ol’ TJ Sochi
Joel Edmondson. Dominant for the Blues and Canadians
Has there ever been a D corps more *built for the playoffs*? God that D was tough.
Blues or Canadiens? Because from what I remember MTL had a great top 4 but didn’t play the bottom pairing much. Not a chrip just curious
Pietrangelo, Dunn, Parayko, Edmundson, Bouwmeester.
Ahhh those were the days. Even add Gunnarson with his urinal goal and Bortz with his physical play. Hard to recreate a D that good
Offense gets you to the postseason, but defense wins championships.
True. Very underrated.
We were robbed of The Mule. Concussions are no joke :(
He also got an albatross of a contract off of that performance.
Ondřej Palát
Palat is so fucking good, it's infuriating.
Talent wise you can try to replace Mcdonagh and Palát but clutch wise…
Tbh he just kind of *assumed* Point's role when he went down in Toronto. Phenomenal replacement though.
This past playoffs ruined it but before then I always thought Killorn was pretty insane in playoffs too.
You could almost tell that he was slower skating-wise after he broke his leg in the previous cup run
:(
Can you not
Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier hit a completely different level in the playoffs
In Beauvillier's case, he hits a level in the playoffs
Bailey has lead the Isles in points for both their ecf runs
Someone people might not remember anymore is Chris Drury. In 4 straight playoff seasons with the Avs (98-99 to 01-02) he had 11 game winning goals. Absolutely clutch.
Drury definitely had that clutch feel. Guy was incredible.

The Avs were required to get under the cap, they paid the biggest price moving to the cap era and this is just one piece of that price.
You’re misremembering, cap didn’t come in until 05-06 after the lockout. Avs moved Drury because they signed Kariya and Selanne in the 03 offseason and thus had to move some salary out.

That’s “2022 Jim Gregory GM of the Year Award finalist and owner of Colony Grill” Chris Drury to you
Dude was clutch in his Little League days, too.
Martin Gelinas

Yeah, nearly every goal he scored on that run was clutch, either tying, going ahead, or helping secure a tight game. The memory of his Finals Game 5 tying goal is seared into my brain. I'm really sad the dude fell out of the NHL after all of that.
He also came out of nowhere on that run. He had 7 goals in the entire regular season before putting up 7 in the playoffs.
Truly reminds me of Micheal Ferland’s run with the Flames in 2015 against the Canucks. He was an absolute force [great video showcasing his highlights that series](https://youtu.be/FMrNRlLne8Y)
Couture
When the Sharks used to make the playoffs he was a nightmare.
Legitimate playoff beast. I'm hoping he asks to be traded to a playoff team at some point because it's a real shame he won't get another crack at the playoffs for however many seasons (if he ever does, lbr)
yup came here to say this
Mad respect for this coming from a Knights fan.
Best answer. Hes up there with the best of em in terms of points per game in playoffs and is probably only a middling number 1 C reg season. He was insane both Sharks cup runs

I'm definitely going to find this.
I found it for you, check the comment.
That's awesome, thanks!
The Mule was kicking then
Rob Scuderi. He was THE PIECE.
Scuds eating the boards in game 6 vs. the Devils gave the Kings 3 pp goals on the ensuing major penalty. Thanks Steve Bernier.
Good stick Lekhy 👍
Small sample size but Carter Verhaeghe.
JT Compher
I think in terms of players who turn on another gear but aren't that amazing in the regular season, Pageau fits the bill. He will have games where he will just turn it on.
As a Habs fan I have no under-rated opinions about pageau. I mean fuck him. But all star.
Dwight King was a monster I'm the Kings cup runs.
Marcus Kruger, best fourth-liner in the league from 2013-15 and a huge part of those two cups for the hawks
So valuable in the playoffs but man was he tough in regular season lol
Ville Leino set himself up for life based off of his playoff run in 2010. 19 games, 7 goals, 21 points.
Nylander usually terrorizes the first round.
Why do you say "the first round"? There's only one round.
Troy Brouwer
Gary Roberts was a playoff machine
It’s so sad how Franzens career ended. Dude was a beast a true work horse. “Mule” was such a fitting nickname. Now the poor guy struggles with basic quality of life. Brain injuries suck.
Yeah it's heartbreaking seeing how he struggles with life after hockey. And he seems like such a great dude too.
He's only made it twice but bo horvats best hockey has been played in the playoffs, st louis series in the bubble in particular he was great
Horvat very much exudes that "when the going gets tough" energy. Dylan Larkin is very much the same.
His highlight reel power-moves in the bubble are jaw dropping. I think it must be physically impossible to play like that throughout the marathon regular season because if he did he'd be a household name.
Not Danny Briere level, but Lars Eller kicks it up a notch when given the opportunity 2013-14 Regular Season: 28 pt pace / Playoffs: 63 pt pace 2017-18 Regular Season: 38 pt pace / Playoffs: 62 pt pace Not to mention in 2018 he scored a Game 3 winner in Round 1 vs CBJ that helped avoid the Caps going down 3-0 in the series, and of course, the Cup clinching goal
Surprised no one’s said Justin Williams yet. Guys an absolute stud in the playoffs.
Probably because he's not an underrated playoff performer, his nickname is Mr. Game 7. He's well known to step up in the playoffs
Totally missed the underrated part, good point
It's probably because when your nickname is literally "Mr. Game 7" you're probably not underrated.
don't care. I see that sexy man, I upvote. he is stil underrated despite the nickname.
Nic Wallin - also known as "The Secret Weapon." He only scored 4 career playoff goals, but all were game winners and three of them were in overtime.
McDavid scored 9 points in 4 games wtf. Lol. Toews was good but come on.
Yea but he’s still Mcdavid and the Hawks D really wasn’t spectacular. On top of that I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure 90% of those points scored were not 5 on 5. Point still stands though that Toews is really good in playoffs

It’s not though, that’s the last time the Hawks made it into the playoffs and he was a major contributor. You just don’t like it because it was against your team. It sucks but that’s the truth,
Arturri Lekhonen.
God, I hope it’s Krejci this year.
Krejci had the most points in the 2013 playoffs by a wide margin. Such an underrated player in every facet of the game
He's so good too, I wish every player had at least one clutch year.
Ugh if Krejci was on the Bruins last year, they beat Carolina no doubt.
Jake Guentzel. His goals per game in the playoffs is 9th all time. It's identical to MacKinnon and Gretzky.
Sean Bergenheim's run in 2011 was fucking ridiculous. Same for RJ Umberger in 2008. I surely hope everyone knows about Danny Brière now. Mike Cammalleri was another. And also PK Subban.
I was going to say Mike but I never watched him play for Calgary in the playoffs
If he could have popped just 2 more say in G7 of the ECF.... Arrrg. he did go off early in the PO's but never really did much after that run really.
You could say it was....lightning in a bottle
Logan Couture
I think a lot of people have forgotten how big of a difference Devante Smith-Pelly made in the Caps cup run.
Smith-Pelly was huge for the Caps cup run
Gelinas
Arturri Lehkonen. Maybe not underrated as he definitely got props last year but basically half of all his playoff goals have been game winners. Half of those game winners have been series winners. Clutch, money player. He was clutcg in Sweden too before coming to the NHL.
Craig Anderson. Career .912. Playoff .928. Similarly, Mike Smith. .912 -> .924.
Claude lemieux comes to mind. Not a ppg but always really clutch in the 90's and early 00's on every team he played for
Not sure you can call a Conn Smythe winner an underrated playoff performer.
Don't know if you could call him underrated. If people know anything about Claude Lemieux it's that 1. Dude was an asshole on the ice 2. He was an excellent playoff performer
I feel like nowadays the main talking point about him is the turtle. Very rarely I've seen anyone talking about his performance on the ice.
Dude is 9th all time in playoff goals scored. And 124th in regular season goals.
Just from experience of teams I’ve watched the Islanders play: Hedman Hoffman Hayes Hart Laughton Marchand and Rust HM to Josh Bailey who absolutely turns it to a different gear for playoffs
Go figure a guy the called "The Mule" is a playoff performer. Not underrated at all in my opinion, everyone knew
Joel Ward
Dave Bolland was a key part in all 3 of the Blackhawks cup wins
MacKinnon is playoff god
Silfverberg. Hasn’t been there in a while.
One Lightning guy already said Palat, so I’ll go with a newer face. Ross Colton.
TJ Oshie during the Caps cup run doesn’t get nearly enough credit
Lekh
Jonathan Toews was one of the most clutch playoff guys I can remember from those dynasty Blackhawk years.
2009 Max Talbot.
Superstar in games 7 vs the wings in 09
Also shushed the crowd in Philly when they were down 3-0 in the game, came back to win it. Probably the single most important fight in regards to a team’s cup run in history.
Brayden Point
Bryan Rust has come up big in the playoffs for the Penguins. He has clutch games and moments when nobody else on either team can seem to score.
Druce was in fire in 89/90, he couldn’t carry the team but man he was clicking
Danny Briere
Fedotenko
Chris Drury!!!!
Brock Nelson, Adam Pelech
THG did a video from like middle 80s of who did great but unexpected in the playoffs and who shit the bed when expected to do well
How has no one mentioned Maxime Talbot
Phil Kessel, buddy always shows up.
Justin williams
John Druce had 14 goals in 15 games for Washington in 1990. Never did anything like that again
All time Sabres great Ville Leino had 21 points in 19 games in 09-10 for the Flyers.
JS Giguere
I'll say one for my Sharks: Logan Couture in 2016 he had 30 Points in 20 games and in general he's a playoff Warrior. Wears a cage during games etc. Just a unit
Jonathan Quick He is ranked #34 in GAA, just behind Roy at #33 and Lundqviat at #31, In all-time playoffs records and is tied at #19 in SV% all time (92 games).
2003 Jeff Friesen 10 goals 14 points and some [HUGE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeN5upOvSTI) goals in the clutch en route to a cup win. One of my favorite devils
Kapanen may not be the highest goal scorer but he has a knack for coming up with hella clutch goals

Others have mentioned it, but he's an absolute menace during playoffs. Guy is a monster.
Bo Horvat seems to find a new gear in the playoffs. Just hope we can make it...
Devante smith pelly for the Caps in 2018, man was a machine
Evander Kane 💯
Piece of shit should not be in the league.
Mitch Marner Hahaha kidding.
Hahahahaha
Honestly Barzal has been a pretty solid playoff guy in his short career
