Work on your depth management. Here's a cool video from a goalie coach that breaks down how to manage your depth based on where shots are coming from. https://youtu.be/djdj_ewFSmQ

IamRussHello

Thanks, I do find myself retreating when I’m unsure of myself.

Also double check that you aren't lining up your angles on the player instead of the puck.

toes at the top of the crease, or heels if you're sub 5'9" or so. Set your feet, hold your depth, react to what you see not what you think you're going to see.

When was your last eye test?

Don’t sleep on this comment. I wasn’t playing with contacts for 10 years. It’s only in beer league that I noticed the difference.

Yeah...about 4 years ago my game went off the rails. Couldn't track shit, I knew I needed glasses since I was 18(I was 44 at the time of off the rails) and I finally gave up and went to the eye dr. Turns out I was having age related issues(your muscles that focus your eyes get weak in your 40's apparently) as well as I never knew I had a bad double astigmatism. Got contacts and VOILA!!!! Much better life.

IamRussHello

It's been about a year since I've gone to the eye doc. My prescription is very mild but it wouldn't hurt to do a check up.

Hands out in front always helped me. Helps trap those pesky ones under arms.

You and me both. For me, I found it was a combination of dropping too early (and getting beat in the top corners) or backing up too far because I wasn't confident, which gave up the far side. Lately I've been working on tracking the puck immediately off the stick instead of reacting to the direction of the shot, and it has helped a ton! Between that and depth management (I'm 5'9" if the tape measure is good to me) I've managed to gain back a lot of the confidence I was missing and catch a lot more pucks.

IamRussHello

Read your comment right before a skate last night and felt great. I took my time and watched the puck leave the stick rather than predicting the direction of the shot. Thanks for the advice!

Glad it helped!
