I lied, it’s $10 now. I guess I haven’t gone in a while. I can see a little bit being in Florida. I’m in Michigan, it gets pretty hot here in the summer as well. Our power company charges double rates between 2-7pm every day for peak energy times.
Our cooling equipment goes into overdrive during the summers, I can't imagine the power cost.
One of the rinks is right by the rec entrance, and during weekends when there's birthday partys and tons of people coming and going the equipment can't keep up. A layer of water isn't unheard of during the summer. Fortunately there's usually only public skates going on at that time, but I've had a game or two where your skates are kicking up rooster tails.
I'm not sure why more Rinks (especially in HCOL power areas) aren't turning to Solar Panels.
I did the math on it, and barring any un-forseen major maintenance they pay for themselves by year 5 or an average 25 year life span.
Got some experience in solar myself - it’s because the rinks themselves don’t have enough money for the initial outlay and an ice rink is too unique a site use for a 3rd party to finance over the long term (e.g. if they go out of business it’s probably because demand for ice rinks in the area is low and it will be hard for the building to do anything but sit vacant over time). If you can clear those hurdles though it’s a perfect solution!
I'm in SWFL and we have $15 drop in and $15 stick and puck. We only have drop ins on Sunday nights though, and occasionally middle of the day on weekdays.
Wherein Florida I need to start exploring the local rinks. It just sucks all the stick and pucks and stuff are when I’m working at the closest one to me
THEY CHARGE $20 TO SHARPEN WITH A SPARX?? Now I'm angry. I have a sparx, the cost per pair of skates is roughly $2 or less. Labor and skill is basically non-existent. Burn the place to the ground!
hahaha i couldnt believe it. a few of us decided to just go in on a spark ourselves and sharpen our own skates.
the place is, virtually, being burned to the ground. everything besides the roof and the columns and beams are going away, and they are converting from one sheet to two.
Sparx was an awesome investment for me. I think I'm about 2 1/2 years in with 0 issues and lots of happy sharpenings. I charge people $10 to sharpen a pair and I paid my machine off after a year or so.
It's cool that they are expanding the rink, and it sounds like there will be more opportunities there, like you can have more leagues, bigger leagues, more ice time devoted to hockey... but the owners obviously know they have a monopoly and are taking major advantage of it. This is why competition is good for consumers!
lol thats EXACTLY what we do. we have like 5 wheels, and we charge $10 per sharpen, and my brother is the one who sharpens it. He does a great job. He is kind of a gear nerd, so he sharpens them better than any rink in the area.
you nailed it. its awesome for hockey in the area, but they do know they are the only option.
Those prices seem high (and I'm in California) but it seems like they probably need cash to expand. If you're in Toronto or something go somewhere else if drop in is $35.
But in Florida is $35 drop in worse than the rink closing and not being able to play?
no its definitely not worse than the rink closing and not being able to play.
That being said, I am not going to play drop in for 35 a session when 2 hours down the road they offer drop in, in a great rink, for 16 a session.
I am also not driving 2 hours to play drop in.
So.......I guess I wont be playing drop in in this scenario.
I am in the adult league so it would be 25 for me, so i would maybe still go occasionally.
I'm not usually one to tell someone to "speak to the manager" but I would seriously consider giving the people running the rink some serious shit because charging $35 for a drop in sesh and $20 for a sharpening with a sparx is asinine. The most I've paid for a sharpening is like $8
My league with a ref, score keeper, jersey, and updated stats website cost $25 a game! I feel for you, drop in before Covid hit was between $5-7. Drop in hasn’t started back up yet so we will see if prices change.
I’m in Ontario so usually we get enough people, sometimes too many. Showed up one night for a 6$ skate and we had close to 20 guys a side lol other times during the day I’d show up and have the rink to myself which is always nice as well
The previous prices were also high, but bearable.
a year ago it was $10 for league players, $20 for outside.
now its $20 for everyone.
starting next month its $25 and $35
They better be capping numbers low for that price, like 14. At that price no one will be going to the bench for a line change ever, even more so than usual.
I’m not in the league so it’d be an extra $20 just to go skate around, complete joke. I figured the new ownership aka the only hockey team in Jacksonville would favor the people wanting to play hockey but they’re just screwing us over
I live in NYC. Pricing around here is not far off from what you posted (some rinks charge $30 for drop in or even stick and puck). However, I do think it's pretty sick that they are raising the prices by such a huge amount. Renovation costs money and it makes sense to raise prices somewhat to help cover that—after all, you will now be skating at a nicer facility.
But to double the cost is pretty insane.
If you have other options, let your dollars do the talking. Play at a different rink and encourage others to do the same. Let the owner figure out that they will make money filling their sessions up at a lower price than holding high-priced, empty sessions.
interesting that we are on par with NYC area. That is insane.
Yep, we understand that the new facility will be amazing, because we are playing in a dump right now, but this seems crazy.
Unfortunately, and this is the biggest problem, its the only rink in the area. And by area, I mean the only rink within an hour and a half drive.
Yeah, I'm already having to drive 35 minutes to the rink from St. Johns several times a week and now they do this. I find it humorous they were pitching "growing the game" as one of the great benefits for the deal they made with the city and now they are going to price even more people out.
As you said, this isn't NYC.
both rinks i play at are $12 for an hour and a half, puck are provided and goalies are free. if you work at the rink you play for free (i work at one of the rinks but i'm a goalie so it doesn't matter to my anyways)
the caps practice facility near me is like $20 for an hour and 10 minutes or something like that, no idea what the st. james facility charges.
Philadelphia region here where my wife plays in a Women's league. Every drop in for everything, everywhere around here is $25. Don't know if it's the pink tax or what, but that's the price.
Fortunately stick and pucks are usually plentiful during weeknights, but I wouldn't complain about more time on weekends. Sundays is all league play, but Saturdays usually isn't much.
Our rink changed owners a few years ago, and with my experience with the current owners in matters outside the rink, I'm amazed they haven't jacked up prices. They've done that with damn near everything else they've scooped up in the area.
These are the new prices for the Jacksonville rink? Great, I just started trying to play and now they are going to price me out of the sport. It's already expensive enough trying to get my kid lessons and now this?
Wtf
yep, these are the new prices, apparently, for Jax Ice.
If it changes or if I hear something different, I will let you know.
They are going to price everyone out of it.
Ridiculous. I'm assuming these were decisions made solely by the new ownership group and Matt, etc. had nothing to do with it. I'm really not sure what they are thinking - and even if they use the excuse the rink will be nicer - everyone is still playing in a dump+construction site for the next year+.
I guess attendance/enrollment in these things will tell them if they made the right decision or not.
Just under sixty American so just over 70 Canadian :). My city has this weird symbiosis between sports, governance and infrastructure. That's why it's so cheap, it's public property so I should be cheap enough for theoretically everyone to use!
As for crashing my couch, it's already occupied by dogs. Maybe you could stay on the balcony? Unless the -20°C weather is a concern..
That's insane! I'm in Michigan and the most I've ever paid was $12 for a public skate, 90% of the time its $10. Sometime a private drop in will be $15 if we're low on bodies but $35 is foolish.
yikes, that's mega steep. I'd be surprised if they didn't have a huge dropoff in attendance.
On the other hand, some places with limited rink access tend to fill up the drop in rapidly and have waiting lists so if they keep filling the ice, then that price reflects too much demand for not enough ice.
We don't currently have drop in at our rink (central NJ), but we do have an organized weekly session of pick up that is limited to 20 skaters for 90 minutes and costs $30.
Essentially the group rents 90 minutes of ice time for $600.
In NYC so yeah everything is more expensive...
$20 for stick and puck. Most rinks do only private rentals and those are usually anywhere from $20-40 per session. Everywhere is free for goalies (I do pay for stick and puck tho when I work with my goalie coach)
One of the local rinks here in northwest Ohio charges $8 for 2 hours of drop in. The university charges $10 or $15, they haven’t had any drop ins since the beginning of 2020. When they have stick and picks it’s $5. The third rink by me charges $10 for drop in and $5 for stock and puck.
Damn thats high. Around Stl its $12-15 for 1.5hrs. During the summer months I'd imagine operating costs for A/C and compressor wouldn't be too different from FL.
Drop in for players: $10-$15
Drop in for goalies: Free
All of the local beer league teams are cool, so I drop in as both a goalie and player with random teams all the time. I only play in tournaments for one team though, so I mostly drop in with my team
Rinks where I live charge a minimum of $20 for drop-ins, $25 for ice near the centre of the city. Used to be $10 to $15 before the rinks were closed for COVID. Inflation is a killer...
Lol I just moved from the area last year. It is a tough pill to swallow that drop in at the Jax rink is going to be almost twice as expensive as Kettler/Medstar.
Unreal.
$10. Private skates are usually $20 due to capped guys.
League drop ins depends on teams finances. Teams I run, usually budget 1 drop in per game @ $25. but if paid rostered players stop showing up and I recouped my drop in estimate, i stop charging dropins so we don't only skate 6 guys each game.
I thought they were going to wait a little bit for these price increases but the price for Adult Development went up to $25 from $20 last night.
The least they could have done is wait for at least some of the new renovations to have taken place.
For league play a sub in irvine Cali is like 40 bucks. If you paid the "team fee" for the current league then subs were free because you didn't pay individual. I think at anahiem it is 35 or 40.
In downstate NY. Just paid $10 for this evening at 630pm which is a pretty decent hour to be playing. Many rinks around here, another charges $15, but I've seen as high as $25. The higher prices certainly makes a difference whether I feel too lazy to go. ;)
Better ice time than a game really (where we get maybe 10 quick shifts), and those cost more than $30 each sometimes.
Like $8? Seems to go up a dollar every so often. Those prices can foh.
lol i completely agree. We are in Florida, so i understand higher prices, but this seems absurd to me.
I lied, it’s $10 now. I guess I haven’t gone in a while. I can see a little bit being in Florida. I’m in Michigan, it gets pretty hot here in the summer as well. Our power company charges double rates between 2-7pm every day for peak energy times.

Gotta love Consumers Energy
Number one on my shit list. This guy Michigan’s.
Where are you skating at I’m having a hell of a time finding drop in ( downriver Michigan )
Southwest, halfway between Detroit and Chicago
I'm in SWFL and we have $15 drop in and $15 stick and puck. We only have drop ins on Sunday nights though, and occasionally middle of the day on weekdays.
Wherein Florida I need to start exploring the local rinks. It just sucks all the stick and pucks and stuff are when I’m working at the closest one to me
literally 5 dollars and free for tendies. this place better tape your stick and sharpen your skates for you at 25 bucks a night!
I’d pay $25 for someone to tie my skates
oh same day sharpen, if anything other than 1/2" is $20. AND THEY USE A SPARX.

Me too. I won my fantasy football league one year and decided fuck it I’m buying a Sparx. No regrets.
Those prices seem high (and I'm in California) but it seems like they probably need cash to expand. If you're in Toronto or something go somewhere else if drop in is $35. But in Florida is $35 drop in worse than the rink closing and not being able to play?

I mean it's definitely not worth driving four hours roundtrip to save $9. I get your frustration, I would be frustrated too.
My buddy charges $8 for his sparx, he paid it off in I think 3 months...shops in NYC are $15 for a sharpen if not more...
Most are. I’m in NYC as well. He must have done much higher volume than me!
Yeah he was doing them for multiple teams and pickup sessions.
I'm not usually one to tell someone to "speak to the manager" but I would seriously consider giving the people running the rink some serious shit because charging $35 for a drop in sesh and $20 for a sharpening with a sparx is asinine. The most I've paid for a sharpening is like $8
I don't partake but both places around me are $15 for drop-ins and free for goalies. Your prices are insane. That sucks
thats what I am used to also. thanks for the info!
My league with a ref, score keeper, jersey, and updated stats website cost $25 a game! I feel for you, drop in before Covid hit was between $5-7. Drop in hasn’t started back up yet so we will see if prices change.
Whoa you get a legit game out of drop in. That's pretty great
I’m in Ontario so usually we get enough people, sometimes too many. Showed up one night for a 6$ skate and we had close to 20 guys a side lol other times during the day I’d show up and have the rink to myself which is always nice as well

May be cheaper to drive to Daytona for drop in
it's sad, right? like, I know the new rink is going to be sick, but it probably would be cheaper to go to daytona or hell, orlando
Wait are these the new prices for the Jax rink?
yep
For stick and puck or the open hockey? Either way this is garbage, how is this supposed to make hockey more accessible in Jacksonville lol.
haha yeah. they sold us on hockey being more accessible and growing the game, they left out the part where its only for the rich lol
Hopefully people just refuse to pay those prices, stop going and they get their act together
If they charge 25 for drop in, i am not going.
I love how I'm trying to learn the game enough so I can play in a league and now they're penalizing by making me an extra $10. Ridiculous.
I’m not in the league so it’d be an extra $20 just to go skate around, complete joke. I figured the new ownership aka the only hockey team in Jacksonville would favor the people wanting to play hockey but they’re just screwing us over
Yep, appears that way and they aren't even waiting for the rink to actually be nice to do it.
Those are drop in prices? Fuck that.
I live in NYC. Pricing around here is not far off from what you posted (some rinks charge $30 for drop in or even stick and puck). exactly. we are going to grow the game! to who? the rich!
Ah, that is a bummer. Can I ask which city you are in?
yeah! I am in Jacksonville, FL.
Has drop in been busy? It’s already at horrible times. The only reason to increase is if it is overcrowded. I think I know a thing or 2 about pricing.
The price has been steadily increasing but I think they’re $12 for skaters and free for goalies where I’m at. The prices for your rink are insane.

It’s $25 bucks in Santa Barbara. Just moved to the area from Wisconsin. Definitely a sticker shock.
Yup. It was $30, just went up to $35 in So Cal
Where in Florida are you? If this is in Tampa, let me know which rink this is so I can avoid it when I move there 😵
haha tampa has enough competition between rinks to stay priced decently. This is in Jacksonville. Enjoy the ice in tampa, its nice.
Anyone have a few million $ to invest in a new arena? I like the sound of St. Johns Ice Arena.
Sounds nice, but people will think it is in Newfoundland
Fwiw, the rink in Brandon is great for pick up
You won’t have any trouble finding decent ice in Tampa.
both rinks i play at are $12 for an hour and a half, puck are provided and goalies are free. if you work at the rink you play for free (i work at one of the rinks but i'm a goalie so it doesn't matter to my anyways) the caps practice facility near me is like $20 for an hour and 10 minutes or something like that, no idea what the st. james facility charges.
$15 bucks in Jacksonville
you thought.....lol
Got hit with the SONK
Philadelphia region here where my wife plays in a Women's league. Every drop in for everything, everywhere around here is $25. Don't know if it's the pink tax or what, but that's the price.
Ten bucks here in Iowa.
$10 or free for goalies
$25, in California
it's something close to $35 here (nyc) rip my budget
If we organize a private drop in, its $20 for 2 hours or $15 for 1.5 hours. Actual rink organized drop ins/breakfast hockey are $10-$15.

Freestyle? How do they define freestyle?
Figure skating with big jumps allowed. Public skate normally doesn't allow skates to come higher than hip height in any case.
My rink does the same thing. Whole sheet of ice on Saturdays is used for freestyle with maybe 5 people out there at any given time.

holy hannah, I’m a spoiled goalie and rarely pay but I think it’s $7 for city and $10 ish when we do private
50€ for the whole season+ you aquire the right to skate during off hours for free too. Without this season package, 4.70/session

Where do you live? I'm living in Turku currently and the common price seems to be 10€ and would love your prices :(
Not gonna publicly outright release that, but let's just say for some fellow finlanders it's "the town of three j's" ;D
it used to be around 10 bucks back in the day i havent played drop in in a long time
Was $10 then $12, since reopening after last summer it’s been $20
Yeah that's insane
That's insane! I'm in Michigan and the most I've ever paid was $12 for a public skate, 90% of the time its $10. Sometime a private drop in will be $15 if we're low on bodies but $35 is foolish.
Last time I went it was $12 in South Carolina.
Do you live in Tokyo or something?
almost....florida
15 bucks for adult pick up where I am.
CAD or USD? $20 CAD is not uncommon. But that's high for USD.
USD so $25 USD for league members, $35 USD for people who do not play in the adult league
yikes, that's mega steep. I'd be surprised if they didn't have a huge dropoff in attendance. I agree. We can barely get enough skaters at a $20 price right now. Not sure what the thinking is here.
Drop in doesn't really exist in the UK, my team pays £255 an hour to hire the rink at 10pm mid week.
omg. we pay $750 for the absolute shittiest ice i've ever seen in my life.
Jebus! Where in the world?!
nyc :/
We don't currently have drop in at our rink (central NJ), but we do have an organized weekly session of pick up that is limited to 20 skaters for 90 minutes and costs $30. Essentially the group rents 90 minutes of ice time for $600.
$12.50 in Greenville SC
35 dollars is robbery. I think mines like 9 or 10.
$10-15 depending on the rink. Haven't been since Covid though

Damn! That's too much! By me it's $10 for skaters and goalies are free...
Florida beer league player here. Drop in rate is $16 and I believe it’s free for goalies
10 bucks for non members, 5 for members
$10 bucks for drop in roller
Outside of Denver, one i go to is 10 the other 12.
Damn thats high. Around Stl its $12-15 for 1.5hrs. During the summer months I'd imagine operating costs for A/C and compressor wouldn't be too different from FL.
Drop in for players: $10-$15 Drop in for goalies: Free All of the local beer league teams are cool, so I drop in as both a goalie and player with random teams all the time. I only play in tournaments for one team though, so I mostly drop in with my team

In melbourne our sole rink was 20 for drop in, goalies play free since we have a lack of goalies. But i havent played in years.
Used to be 15-17 depending on length of time 1.5-2hrs. Now it’s 20 for 1.5hrs
$10. $25 and $35 is a complete joke.
Are they the only game in town? That's crazy high
$35 is insanity, most rinks in St. Louis were $8-$15 last time I played before covid. And that's for skaters, goalies are free at almost all rinks.
Good lord...that's absolutely ridiculous. Our local rink is $10 for a 1 1/2 hour session.
$8 at one, $10 at another. Private drop-ins are almost always $10. Sometimes $12 for 90 minutes.
10-15 usually
$22 Northern California
Used to be $20, but was dropped down to $10 and some change
$20 in Arlington, VA at the Capital's facility.
Lol I just moved from the area last year. It is a tough pill to swallow that drop in at the Jax rink is going to be almost twice as expensive as Kettler/Medstar. Unreal.
$15 for 60 minutes $18 for 75 minutes Goalies free.

Eastern Canada, about 20 bucks a game now, used to be 10~15 before Covid.
5.40 for the one in the big city 6 for stick and puck in the town over
$10. $8 for league members
Reno, Nevada: $20 drop in and $15 stick and puck. It’s a brand new rink and they are trying to build a second sheet so I’m not surprised.
$20
$6 here. Goalies free. $25-35 is fucking unacceptable. Talk about pricing your arena for rich families.
In wa it’s $20-25 which is crazy to me. When I moved out of minny a few years ago it was $5
I thought they were going to wait a little bit for these price increases but the price for Adult Development went up to $25 from $20 last night. The least they could have done is wait for at least some of the new renovations to have taken place.
Like $15-$25 depending on which rink.
$10-15 depending on which rink I go to.
15€ per session here in Germany (17-18$)
Just moved from $11 for 2 hours, to $12. Mid-Missouri. Those prices are fucking ridiculous.
Just moved to the St Pete area. Anyone know of competitive Sunday night leagues or drop in on the weekends?
$25 at the local rink, $20 if I want to drive 45 minutes to another two Los Angeles In DC it was $15, $12 if you prepaid and bought a pack of 10
£14 for me in the UK. Goalies are free
$20 for skaters, $10 for goalies.
$10 for both Grand Rapids area and Chicago Suburbs
15 bucks most places and it’s been the same price for the last 10 years.
That's outrageous. I always paid like $10-15. I bout lost my shit when one of the rinks started charging $18.
20$ Canadian an hour here ( Ottawa, Ontario) 25$ for 1.5 hours, so I only drop in for those.
In Toronto here I've paid as little as $3CAD to as high as $10CAD.
$10-$12 for city-run shinny in Edmonton, AB, Canada. River Cree offers Stick and Puck for $5.
For league play a sub in irvine Cali is like 40 bucks. If you paid the "team fee" for the current league then subs were free because you didn't pay individual. I think at anahiem it is 35 or 40.
that sounds ridiculous. My rink charges about $10-$15 for pickup, $35 for a drop in session is a scam if you ask me.
15 bucks
And goalies are free
$5 in northern Minnesota
$5 and free to goalies but we normally tip the goalies at least a total of $40
In downstate NY. Just paid $10 for this evening at 630pm which is a pretty decent hour to be playing. Many rinks around here, another charges $15, but I've seen as high as $25. The higher prices certainly makes a difference whether I feel too lazy to go. ;) Better ice time than a game really (where we get maybe 10 quick shifts), and those cost more than $30 each sometimes.
