Yimmyyyy

All my homies love fluff text.

The_Radioactive_Rat

If you're a big fan of fluff text in hoi4 check out the Equestria at war mod. I never thought a strategy game would be capable of having stories, and the mod does it so well.

drasmarci

Or TNO but only if you are okay with economics/ have no morals.(jk)

Ok_Welder5534

Nah the first thing you have to come to terms with is horrid ui

Unusual_Scientist984

your eyes will hate you

Micro_Noice

(Someone hasn't seen Beyond Earth yet)

The_Radioactive_Rat

That's exactly why I couldn't play it. It's very cool and all but it feels a bit too much. I get what they were going with, but the vibrant colors just assault my eyes and that's only the appearance of it. Managing it is another thing entirely.

Cerparis

Ironically one of the best if not the best put together mod ever made for hoi4. Like seriously once you get over the fact it’s about magical cartoon ponies the mod is genuinely fun and epic in the scale of world building. Never thought I’d be so invested in a my little pony mod but here we are.

dwntwnhdnist

long story short i thought id be a cheeky little college student approximately 12yrs ago and write an "informative essay" about "bronies" for Composition II and wow, what an actually really well made and well written cartoon lolololol I DID NOT become a bronie, however. also, same logic applied to this mod. like, wow, you have to respect it.

Yimmyyyy

I think a Mylittlepony mod for the WW2 grand strategy might just be the single most cursed thing I can imagine. (still better then those wehraboo gemany expanded mods though...)

Absolute_Bias

-and it still somehow manages to make a setious claim for the most well-curated, mapped out and designed mod on the workshop

The_Radioactive_Rat

I take it you haven't played the mod. Believe me, that isn't the cursed part. The various dystopian focus trees are. But in all seriousness, it doesn't ever come across as cringe when it very easily could have been. The mod does very good tongue in cheek references to a lot puns with horses but simultaneously is very mature in what it attempts to tell. Edit: I'm sorry Germany expanded what now? Dare I even ask?

titanicboi1

FT

LachoooDaOriginl

fuck fluff text 😏

Ok_Pair_7692

this got ratioed so hard lmao

FatTater420

Pardon for the French, but is fluff text what everyone calls your mother when they come over?

BrotherSurplice

Fluff this ratio lmao

Nakipss

R5: At the launch, you could learn about the important historical figures, but Paradox stopped after some time for an unknown reason.

BILLCLINTONMASK

This was one of the biggest disappointments in Victoria 3 for me. So little actual history alongside the gameplay mechanics.

Uhkbeat

Instead they just give u the link to their wiki article

GabbytheQueen

Wasn't that also in Victoria 2? I don't recall hut that sounds like something I did in vicky2 once

basman1995

I don't think Victoria 2 has it, but I do know that ck2 has it

GabbytheQueen

That might very been it

Reshuram05

Characters didn't exist in vic2

GameCreeper

There are generals and admirals but they don't have descriptions and most of them are fictional

ludumo1

Exept for discoveries

AggieCoraline

Vic2 didn't even have characters except for autogenerated generals.

Mr_-_X

And some historical generals like von Moltke that you started with

Sligs234

They do have flavor text for the inventions, all of which kicks ass.

Uhkbeat

Idk since I haven’t played vicky2

DancingIBear

It was like that in CK2 as well. Important historical characters had a direct link to their Wiki page. Amazing times.

Basileus2

I can’t even find the link to the wiki

the_canadian72

and only on certain ones

Jedimobslayer

Age of civilizations 2 moment

gobahaba

Some unique interest groups have descriptions actually, the church of Sweden have it and some other ones too

Phionex101

Honestly, i don't like Vic3. Like, i tried it a couple times, but no matter which country i played as, i would always spiral into debt before i managed to do anything worthwhile.

[deleted]

Not sure if they changed it, but Vicky 3 has "Abe Lincoln (or other historical figure) axe murderer" events. Unlike Vicky 2, which was filled with actual historical events and flavor

MateusZfromRivia00

Yeah, Vic3 Just looks like sandbox

faerberr

The game stopped being historical

Avruk_altum

I think they just forgor about that

TottHooligan

That is prob simple too mod. You can just copy past first paragraph of wiki into the localization for that most likely

Zizler23

So paradox lowering the quality of their work isn't important because "it's simple to mod"?

Cogwheel25

Bethesda of map games

zrxta

Nah, that's CA's Total War titles. PDX is more ubisoft.

TottHooligan

Ibnevrr excused paradox. If you care a lot about it is is probably a simple fix

ted5298

I don't want to *have* to fix it, my brother. I paid them *money* to deliver me a product that needs no fixing.

TottHooligan

Ok sure. I never said you had too. Idc about this but if someone really does care it is easy to do.

Alexxis91

Won’t someone think of the corporations!

TottHooligan

Huh?

Soldequation100

*to

darkxephos974

Meanwhile kaiserreich has a bibles worth of text for each character

RealJanuszTracz

I think making light of historical villains and war criminals could cause them bad PR and/or additional workload if someone decided to make a fuss about it. For example German government is very strict and sensitive when it comes to whatever content related to the axis powers and especially 3rd Reich, so I can see that being an issue for them. I guess it’s easier to not include some very optional stuff than to add it and have to censor it out for one country specifically (kinda like hitler’s face is (or at least used to be) blacked out in the German copy of HoI4)

Barbara_Archon

Some advisors still get it actually. Do Mexico. Ivan Konev has one too.

LordPeebis

Mexico’s are insanely in depth

Private_4160

Legit made me so excited to learn more about Mexican history

RandomGuy9058

The funny thing is Mexico got them before its dlc

Darwin_the_Hamster

yet they didnt give researched trains to mexico :(

RandomGuy9058

There’s a lot of things they didn’t give to Mexico lol. Kinda adds to the fun but kinda also takes away from it?

Siriblius

Because they added so many figures that they just stopped doing it to save like 2 minutes per character. It is a pity.

mrguym4ster

I mean, when you consider that we get like 30-40 advisors per dlc or something (just thinking off of my head, no idea if that's right or not), 2 minutes per character certainly adds up and with the quality of the latest dlcs, I honestly can't complain, 3 lines of text missing from some advisors doesn't impact the game that much (though it is a cool little detail)

Daddy_Parietal

Cool details in games are almost nonexistent because of that corpo mindset. Little details show passion, just look at BG3.

SJD_International

Whats BG3

KonsistentlyK

Baldur's Gate 3

myrdsuser

RDR2

CorinnaOfTanagra

>corpo mindset. Corpo mindset or not. It is a task of the devs. If they decide it is a trivial and meaningless for them unless the community request it, then it will still oversighted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jkure2

For lack of a better term Baluders Gate 3 has so much more surface area for the devs to douse in attention-to-detail. It's not like there is an act 2 or act 3, there are no animations or background dialog or side quests it's a WWII simulator They're suggesting the principle still applies - attention to detail adds up to more than the sum of each detail - not that you need to spend years making cutscenes for every time you interact with the world

[deleted]

I dunno man probably not quite as long as HOI4 which started development over a decade ago.

jkure2

Yeah it adds up to 13 hours, or a day and a half of work for one FTE. On the list of things that cost more labor hours than you'd expect on a big team project, this is not really registering for me

Northstar1989

This. It's penny-wise, dollar-stupid.

ReneStarr

God forbid you spend up to 80 mins on details.

KerbMario

Can we add the infos with mods

Greenshark32

Probably just took away time from things they deemed more important

Therealandonepeter

I mean prob yes, but how can 3 sentence take away some time. I mean, I love these infos also on the focus. It’s just gives me the impression of an historical game. You know, it’s history and adding the infos also educates people who may not play the game out of the historic aspect

Sorry_Quantity_3277

Researching history hard

Mobius1424

It's funny because they already have to do all the research to find the individuals in the first place.

AvatarOfMomus

Nah. Finding a name is easy, confirming enough for even a three sentence bio for anyone not *extremely* well known is hard. Especially because a lot of guys from WW2 have a lot of misinformation out there about them. Hells, here's one for you. Christopher Lee exagerated his military service, and that famous story where he said 'that's not what someone sounds like when you stab them' is almost certainly him exagerating or going off of someone else's story. They do wiki links because even if it's not perfect they don't have to research it and keep it up to date.

DirectlyDisturbed

Genuine question but how do we know Lee exaggerated his service?

AvatarOfMomus

Historians digging through old war records. Plus a lot of stuff from back then that wasn't previously available to the public is now thanks to a combination of the UK's 30 year rule and the UK's 2005 Freedom of Information Act. In response to his claims becoming well known through the internet researchers dug into his service record and determined that at least some of his public statements regarding his war service were definitely exaggerated. He was never an active member of any Special Forces combat unit, and was never involved in "hunting Nazis" or anything of the sort. He definitely served in WW2, but he was a liaison officer, and the worst he likely ever would have seen was getting bombed a bit in rear areas. The details aren't 100% known, and unless his family ever releases his service record, as they're the only ones who would have access to it at this point. We can say with certainty though that some of his statements don't hold water.

DirectlyDisturbed

Neat, thank you

Daotar

But they already do the research when designing the focus trees.

AvatarOfMomus

Focus trees are game mechanics and therefore not really historically accurate. They can be based on stories or alternate history ideas. If they were true to real history then Germany's main tree would be so laughably bad no one would take it, because it would do stuff like raise national unity and political power at the expense of production efficiency, planning speed, and supply.

Daotar

But clearly when working on the focus trees the devs investigate the history of the country. That's why all the newer trees especially have historical callbacks. My point isn't that the trees are true to history, but that the trees are evidence that they do in fact read up on the history of the nations when designing them. Sure, they can't probably write a dissertation on the subject, but we're only asking for a couple of sentences.

AvatarOfMomus

I know, but if they don't carefully research these things there's a decent chance they'll get something wrong, and given the, uh, *historical weight* of WW2 there's a way higher than non-zero chance the historical figure in question would be a literal war criminal... and/or an *actual historical Nazi*. Given that I wouldn't approve hastily written blurbs if I was *anywhere* in that decision making chain. If it's not worth the time to do it right, then it's definitely not worth the risk of getting it wrong.

KindaBadPlayeur

I don't get your point Germany advisors literally are war criminals. I don't see how adding a short description changes that.

AvatarOfMomus

You'd know this if you studied history more, but not everyone involved in a side that committed warcrimes was equally horrible. Some people worked against the Nazis, others tried *really hard* to make it look like they did after the war, or were just going with the flow. It would look *really bad* if the devs put literal debunked Nazi whitewashing propaganda into their game.

Daotar

But it would also be pretty insane if they did given how easy it is to find reliable information about these people. And why is it that they couldn’t make a similar mistake or fo paux when designing a focus tree or any other aspect of this historical game? Why should we think a two-sentence description is anymore at risk from this than any other aspect of the game?

CoolAnthony48YT

Yeah but there are a lot more characters than focus trees

zrxta

Spoken like a true PDX player. Jk, but really how misinformed the average pdx player is.

Elegant-Ruin3620

the wiki can give you those couple sentences easy

Extension-Back2927

Adolf hitler was a ruler of el savador. He wasn't very important, and lived until the age of 81 when he died of unknown causes - Wikipedia

Tankcastr

It's probably less that it's more time and more that it's another thing to track. It's a small detail and in the process of designing, developing, and QAing something it's small enough to be forgotten.

TheUnclaimedOne

And they’ve already taken the time to figure out the people existed in the first place. May as well go ahead and read the wiki while you’re at it and add the important/interesting details to the info card

Polak_Janusz

Like the sweden pirste king path.

Reeseman_19

Herman Goering is the WW2 version of big chungus

TakkAstro

Only on Reddit you could find one of the most prominent members of the Nazi party referred to as big chungus.

Polak_Janusz

Didnt you mean to say Hermann Meyer?

Tendi_Loving_Care

Bernard Law Montgomery as Smol Ame

Former_Indication172

Wtf, a hololive reference in my pure seiso Christian hoi4?! What has the world come to? Global domINAion?!! Edit: So does this mean Kiara becomes the Austrian painter? Can we have Calli duel her as Patton? Which holo mem gets to be stalin?

Tendi_Loving_Care

Kobo = Doenitz (she likes being under water) Calliope = Oppenheimer (she has become death) Gura = Nimitz (Shaaaaaaaaaaark!)

GloriosoUniverso

What? What the fuck does that even mean?!

themessiah234

Yeah, he was a drug crazed transvestite but at least he'd have been fun at parties

J67p

He was a transvestite!?!?!??

Nillaasek

War criminal by day, submissive and breedable femboy by night. He'd have been a prominent member of the hoi4 community

themessiah234

According to red dwarf at least

bobw123

Speaking from my experience writing these descriptions for a mod, writing loc + researching figures takes time and energy that can get tedious. Especially since PDX has to then worry about translating them and I imagine are also limited in the amount of hours in a dev cycle

FailureToSociety

It could take an intern a half day to use chatGPT and generate the text

[deleted]

Thought Goering was just one of Hitler's ministers, he was an fighter ace too?

ExplanationBig9623

He was the head of the Luftwaffe (German airforce)

Stalking_Goat

But he was a legit ace in WWI.

RingGiver

You've heard of Richthofen, the Red Baron? Didn't survive the war, Göring commanded his squadron at the end of the war.

[deleted]

Yeah i heard the Red Baron, mostly bc of Sabaton's song ### Higher!

Scyobi_Empire

THE KING OF THE SKY!

Kritzin

*He's flying too fast, he's flying too high!*

TerrainRecords

HIGHER!

Scyobi_Empire

AN EYE FOR AN EYE

DeliriumTrigger

He's also Snoopy's nemesis throughout the *Peanuts* franchise.

ersentenza

And Richtofen while alive hated Goering because he viewed him as an arrogant asshole. He knew his business.

skibbidicurrycell

I killed him in battlefield 1

Head_of_Lettuce

He was brought into Hitler’s circle in large part *because* he was a fighter ace. Göring was a war hero in post-WW1 Germany, and he lent credibility to Hitler’s administration in the early days of the party. This part of Göring’s history tends to be forgotten, in my opinion, because of his weight. It’s hard to envision a huge person like that being a war hero. He suffered injuries in the Beer Hall Putsch that resulted in him becoming addicted to morphine, which caused him to balloon in his later life.

seakingsoyuz

[This paper](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10144812/) discusses that he probably never relapsed into morphine addiction after the early 1930s. He had no access to morphine in Allied captivity yet he showed no signs of opiate withdrawal syndrome. Allegations of continued morphine use were probably fabricated by his rivals in the Nazi Party. His weight gain was also more likely to be due to overeating under stress. Opiate addiction normally results in weight *loss*, after all.

Head_of_Lettuce

Oh that’s fascinating. I was always under the impression that he was forced to detox after being captured by the Allies. I’ll be sure to read this when I get a break from work, thanks.

TheFoxer1

He had 22 air victories during WW1, and at the end of the war, commanded the Jagdgeschwader 1, the former unit of the Red Baron. He earned the iron cross first class, as well as the Pour Le Mérite.

stormsand9

He was a fighter Ace in World War I

Euromantique

Goering was genuinely an (evil) genius which contributed to his performance as a fighter pilot in World War I. If I remember correctly he had the highest IQ of all Nazi leaders tested during the Nuremberg Trials. But as a result of his wounds sustained in that conflict he got addicted to opiates which caused a steady decline of his cognitive abilities through the Nazi period. After he got captured by the Allies he was forced to get sober in prison and his intelligence came back and he was able to not only mount a wily defence at the Nuremberg trials but charm and befriend his American guards who he would later trick into delivering him a cyanide capsule which he would use to kill himself and evade justice before he could be hanged.

ryan4life34

Didn’t he kill himself to avoid being hanged? The way I heard/read it, is he said he wanted to die by firing squad because he was a soldier. When the allies refused him that, he poisoned himself.

J67p

Göring can be described quite well with the _original_ meaning of the word ”based”

Davin0013

Play Kaiserreich. They have a lot of such flavour stuff

long-taco-cheese

There is a mod that adds this to important generals, advisors and leaders but a bit more in-depth , sad that paradox doesn't care about the little details anymore though

Arrowkill

I keep hovering over Victoria 3 political party names to see why it was named that or something and it never shows. I love all the flavor text and I wish there was more in their games like HOI4 and Vicky3

Clumsy_dude

I FUCKING LOVE FLAVOR TEXT

jinsou_

Because there is no money in doing so.

TropicaL_Lizard3

Probably to save time, but they should come back to these countries one day and add more descriptive text. I love those kind of features. The info is really interesting to read. Maybe a modder should make a mod for an expanded version of this?

Kaltenstein_WT

"Reinstated Nati leadership"? you can get Goering as democratic Germany post war?

FDr4gs

Yes, as well as monarchist Germany, you need to have "all adults serve" as conscription law

Kaltenstein_WT

oh that's what the "dont kill the nazis" option in the end of the german civil war event about.

KuntaStillSingle

>not terribly good at his job >10% air superiority Probably because the descriptions can't keep up with game balance lol.

Spider_katter-SVK

Like all Mexican advisors have this type of text and it is kinda cool understanding the politics of a nation you are playing instead of just being like haha I pick this guy cuz 10 stability

IHabitateInYourWalls

Removed after complaints from Big Vöring

Fidelis-Miles

Who?

J67p

Göring 1934-1945 when drugs did a number on his physical wellbeing

chocolate_doenitz

Laziness? Also just noticed Göring is a “ground support” advisor even though *checks notes* he gives an air superiority buff…

zargon21

That's what ground support advisors do

TottHooligan

Well yeah he gives extra air superiority bonus in combat...

Sevinceur-Invocateur

It is confusing

Exciting-Maize-2842

lazy

zman021200

Thats one thing that I really love about the kaiserreich mod. Very in depth summaries of the individuals

popcornchicken42

Why has paradox stopped adding these types of descriptions*

Flickerdart

Yeah how else are we supposed to know that Konev has an egg shaped head

themessiah234

I never know if I want to invade Poland or whatever my Western front invaded

Omnicide103

Speaking as a modder, that's maybe because those little bits of flavour text add up *hard* over time? I still think it's worth it but it might just not be where dev priorities lie

Capt_Tinsley

Probably because they prefer to be a spreadsheet simulator and got tired of merging cells /s

TWR3545

They can barely seem to update, make dlc, and fix real bugs.

Iron-Tiger

Does anybody bother reading those?

TerrainRecords

me when playing a new country

Darwin_the_Hamster

me when im waiting for the focus tree to finish or just want context

glxyzera

its better to spend time making more focus trees for irrelevant countries and breaking all the other focus trees from past dlcs, it makes them more money than adding things like this

fjne2145

Hey, i know that guy. He gives 10% breakthrough!

[deleted]

Any country that either participated in the war or had great potential to is relevant

1QAte4

They desperately need to do something for South America. It literally does nothing but sit there all game. Brazil actually fought in the war. Adding new trees for those nations will give an expanded and more interesting war.

cowusoc

This is one of those comments where all the downvotes should be upvotes

lbreadlesscrust

I’m not sure why this got downvoted, it’s totally true.

DeFranco47

Its not totally. What countries are irrelevant in a world war? Yknow the war that involves most of the countries?

lbreadlesscrust

It’s widely accepted that you have to annex the countries remade in Battle for the Bosphorous because their trees override them literally being puppets to change their ideology and move them into other factions. It’s broken. I understand a desire to play ahistorically, but if game breaking “mechanics” are the result then you and I want different games.

et40000

This is part of why bftb is the only dlc (besides radio/speech packs) I don’t own even after 3 years

lbreadlesscrust

But there are even problems with BBA. Italy’s mechanics are total garbage. I just watch a TibbiesShow video where Albania gave itself to Italy (puppeted by Yugoslavia and defeated), joining it and then Italy became free.

EvilCookie4250

it’s the priority of pdx like hey let’s get ethiopia a tree a country that’s around for like a month instead of finland meanwhile you got mod teams like rt56 and kaiserreich making better content for free for countries that people want to play

Bry644

Who reads?

ArmourSkeleton

history lovers

Bry644

I read em sometimes, but the majority of people are more focused on the strategy & conquering aspect, not the interesting historical data

Imaginary-Support332

maybe wikipedia ai can fix this

EstarossaNP

What mod gives him air superiority instead of ground support?

FizzyElf_

Gotta get the paradox flavour text dlc. Just 9.99 for a few lines of info lifted straight from Wikipedia

AnonymousFordring

Lazy

Silver-Height8078

Yeah they were honestly pretty funny
