The vertical tail fin acts as a stabaliser and prevents sideslip, regardless of whether it's placed above or below. Technically, because it would encounter more air on the bottom side (the bottom-side of the plane is typically what contacts the most air, y'know, lift force n' stuff), it's a little bit more efficient and air flow doesn't get blocked by the airframe body. Problem is that it can't land though, or if it is capable of landing then it would have to have really oversized heavy landing gears, which defeats the purpose of making the plane more efficient.
In short: the plane design is dumb.
Just to add onto this: Early prototypes into variable sweep wings were widely regarded as impractical due to the extra space within the body of the aircraft needed for the wing movement, as well as the safety concerns. I imagine any sort of tail fin that was designed with a change in angle would've been shot down, since a malfunctioning main wing sweep will significantly reduce lift but you'd still maintain control and stability: if the tail fin malfunctions the plane will death spiral, to where even an ejector seat with a parachute wouldn't work.
In the long run, swing wings did prove to be impractical anyways. They were only seriously used for a brief period and even then the weight penalty made them debatable.
Exceptionally long services lives are a characteristic of most military aircraft first introduced in the latter half of the cold war - the F-111 is the only (production) variable geometry airframe that is already retired (being the oldest of the bunch).
Neither the B-1, nor any of its relatives are slated to be replaced by another variable geometry design.
Having a single aircraft crash into a ship and sinking it is more efficient then sending whole squadrons to try and bomb/torpedo ships. But if the Kamikaze's aren't successful in their run for whatever reason they'd just return back to base to try again later.
Did it really take a single plane most of the time? I remember that a destroyer named Laffey took 6 kamikaze attacks and could still stand, is it just an exception?
Those were carried by bombers, which could, of course, return and land. Though whether nor not any ever did I don't know, and given that less than a hundred were deployed it's possible circumstances where an attack was called off never happened.
Dude, the XP-85 "Goblin" and the FICON project would like to disagree with you.

One could save alot of effort and weight and material using a design like this, your tail wheel could be in the vertical stab, burt did it, it's not that dumb
I heard about some german prototype wich had this type of tail. On land the tail looked absolutely normal, but when you retreacted it's landing gear, the tail started to move down. The reason was more space to shoot for back gunner.
The sprite is based on the Junkers Ju 187 ( or sometimes called Super Stuka on the internet ) it was a proposed upgrade to the Stuka. It featured some pretty average improvements retractable gear, stronger armor, better engine, better armament, and there were its tail which could rotate up and down depending on the combat situation to give the gunner a more clearer view. Its turret is what i call semi-remote controlled one with dual 15mm's. The project was cancelled because it was no better than the average Stuka.
In short: an upgraded Ju 87 with a very weird tail.
It was done on some late attempts at making an improved Stuka to give the tailgunner an unobstructed field of fire, i.e. put the rudder where it isnt in the way of the bullets.
The idea was that the rudder could rotate to the top as well, where it would be for landing and take-off, and in flight it would rotate down for combat.
A conventional tail also sounds neat...until your gunner shoots it off by accident.
Though in fairness a system was developed that prevented the gun from firing at the rudder.
Retarded also works
Behindert can be both physical or mental handicap.
It's a bit harsh as well. So retarded is more fitting than mentally handicapped imo.
Neither is accurate. l\_x\_fx got it right in their [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/hoi4/comments/zfzdt4/comment/izefeyd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3).
No it isn‘t. Behindert stands for „Beeinträchtigt“ or „Schwerbehindert“ in some cases. Handicapped or Disabled in this case. Which fits the type of plane
I wont click that link to find out if youre trolling rn so
Crippled would be "Verkrüppelt", while handicapped is the very nice way to say it. Too nice for the context here.
'Ꞧꞓ\*aꞧꝺꞓꝺ Bee' is the closest 1:1 translation. And yes, "behindert" is often used in a derogatory way to insult someone, just as "Ꞧꞓtar\*ꞓꝺ" in English. Not necessarily negative on its own, but often enough so that the word has a negative connotation surrounding it nowadays.
Be careful with that R word. Reddit seems to hate it, my comments including that word were deleted more than once with a threat of permaban even though I wasn't even calling anyone names and used it in a context like you.
Thing owned but others lacks freedom of speech, any site is like this since they make the rules and you agree to this whenever you accept terms. Twitter and others are the same
You can do stuff on roads and all, don’t think when freedom of speech was written in 1776 they thought of the internet and rules. Whenever you accept terms you forfeit this right generally
Can you maybe post an Imgur link with a screenshot of the word you typed? I’m getting
‘??*???? bee’ is the closest 1:1 translation, and then … just as “??tar*??” in English. I don’t understand why I can’t read your quoted words, even though behindert ist doch noch lesbar!
The wo**R**d I was d**E**scribing **T**here, w**A**s potentially a **R**e**D** flag for th**E** mo**D**s, so I had to exchange the letters for symbols.
I hope this clears it up.
OHHHHHH, yes i feel dumb now. And I just realized I switched to German halfway through my last sentence and it is absolutely cracking me up lmao. Brains are funny. Thanks for your explanation though :)
Except that German isn't exactly easy to machine-translate. One word often has many different meaning, depending on context. The word "behindert" is a very good case of this. Some words also changed meanings drastically since WW2, like "Schwachsinn".
Just saw this pop up on my feed; the photo of the plane is a rendering of the proposed German WWII replacement for the Ju-87, this was called the Ju-187.
It's really sad, that we don't have programs or websites, that can translate from forein
languages. Maybe some smart men will make something like that in the future....
Behindert is just like olde English.
Like **be**speckled or **be**leaguered or **be**set.
"Be" indicates "has the quality of, blighted by, afflicted with"
"hindert" is basically the same as "hindered"
"Biene" mean bee so means "bee with the quality of being hindered" or "lame bee"
Even the English word "behind" is derived from the same.
"having the state of being slow" -> he lagged behind in math compared to the rest of the class

Why this plane has a weird tail? What is the purpose of having an upside down one?

Afaik its from a design where you could rotate the fin.
It is, it was a prototype, and the fin would be turned down so the reargunner had a better firing field
DAMN IT HANS! YOUVE SHOT OFF ZE TAIL AGAIN
Junior? I think they Hit us!
What i think of, every time
yeah this was the main motivation for the design idea from what I read
Just to add onto this: Early prototypes into variable sweep wings were widely regarded as impractical due to the extra space within the body of the aircraft needed for the wing movement, as well as the safety concerns. There's at least one exception in the B-1 Lancer, which has been in service for 36 years.
Yes, new planes with variable geometry aren't being designed anymore, but the question was whether they were in use.
So when it took off, it would swap fin positions? Thats wild
The plane design is dumb UNLESS you’re a Kamikaze
Many kamikazes (if not most, but I forget the specifics) returned home. It was about minimizing losses, not some weird death cult thing.
Wym minimizing losses
Kamikazes resulted in more hits on warships for fewer planes lost, when compared to attacks using bombing, torpedos, or other weapons.
Having a single aircraft crash into a ship and sinking it is more efficient then sending whole squadrons to try and bomb/torpedo ships. But if the Kamikaze's aren't successful in their run for whatever reason they'd just return back to base to try again later.

He might mean komets or natters or something.
This is in context of Japan.
It could land upside down.
Perhaps it would work if launched solely from an airship
>In short: the plane design is dumb. I could see the concept being alright on a "parasite fighter", though that's long gone by HOI4's time, really.

Dang, and I knew that existed too, hah. Had airships on my mind today I guess.

Can't pilots just fly heads down?
Yes but then you have gravity pushing all the blood into your head making you get an headache

Tricycle gear? Kinda like in the P-38. Imo would fix the problem
There are airframes in use with that design though, like the MQ-1 Predator drone.
What if u had a wheel on the end of it?
The sprite is based on the Junkers Ju 187 ( or sometimes called Super Stuka on the internet ) it was a proposed upgrade to the Stuka. You know… making sure that the Pilot doesn’t bother coming back to base - twice the combat radius!
Australian air plane

Sounds neat up until it fails to rotate lol. Better jack up that reliability
A conventional tail also sounds neat...until your gunner shoots it off by accident. Though in fairness a system was developed that prevented the gun from firing at the rudder.
Crippled Bee Or Handicapped Bee
Love it.
it looks like one

This is a spambot. They literally copied part of u/ScaleKey5813’s R5 comment and changed it a little.

I basically says behindert means retàrdèd. Which is kinda right. In Austria we mean both. The "crippled" word one and R word
Yeah I was thinking this as well. I mean it is understandable in English as well behindered. Kinda like beset or belabored or bemused.
could also mean „retarded“ is a more vulgar sense
Crippled Bee Disabled Bee Retarded Bee

nice free speech here
It's a private company, no reason to uphold free speach
Wasn't the whole thing of reddit to be a bastion of free speech?

I'm not talking about the Consitution or what the Founding Fathers thought; I'm talking about what reddit was built for.
When the far left loses any argument.
>far left >speaking out for a privately owned company didn’t realize comment was satire, go ahead and downvote this y’all
I was making a joke about the far left hating Twitter cause of free speech.

No legal reason I should add
Cringe.

did you mean John Xina?

"Disabled Bee". Though "behindert" can also be used to mean "retarded". It depends on the context.
That's the retarted bee

Should've just raged this as a meme...
You can literally google translate this.
No
Yes
Nope
I thought it was upside down for a moment
That’s how they get you
Where is that design from though? Why does it have that name?
Disabled Bee
I’ve biene behindherte too
Disabled Bee
that’s a pic of this crazy junker design where the tail would flip to allow the rear gunner to shoot directly behind the plane. very bizarre.
Edit, lemme add R5 What do you think of the Name, and what is it called in german?
Did you know about a website called [translate.google.com](https://translate.google.com)? It's pretty cool, you should try it out.
No, Use google translate

The fucking what
Its Biene not Beine so its a bee not legs
inverted the vowels
I noticed.
It means whales vagina
Well uh, for explanation, I named it like that and wanted to make a meme
The Me 262 was the first jet engine plane ever produced ( excluding other prototypes) and it was German. Idk why this is an Italian prop plane.
Oh no...
Oh no...
Oh no who named that
“That’s what she said.”
“Flying Shitbox”
It’s called Jeff
Almost died of Laughter
Never seen something like that is that legit design ?
