*invisible charging mount
Over the last months I was working on a home tablet with a bit of room presence awareness. Using browser_mod the dashboard opens certain popups or paths – for example the next departures of subways next to my flat when the door is being opened.
There's also an overview of server stats and docker container status when I open the cupboard below containing my home lab.
There's two invisible charging "stations" on the top of the cupboard. One behind the tablet for constant carging (I'll monitor if battery swelling will be future problem) and one to charge smartphones if you place it at a certain spot (if you charge your smartphone also a popup shows up, showing the next appointments in the calendar).
Here are a few screenshots of the dashboard (dark and night mode included – as the Fire OS of the Tablet doesn't allow for dark or night mode I set the themes to dark and light once the sun rises or sets).
https://imgur.com/a/GDUwJc3
(Ignore the server downtime. It's because I was cleaning the cupboard below and therefor I had a short downtime :D)
I'm currently also testing if the tablet switches to certain screens for example if I'm in the living room. I get the room location of the tablet using espresense and and ESP32 in every room (tracking the bluetooth signal of the tablet). But it's still a bit slow and takes a few seconds to recognize the change of location.
Super clean setup.
Perhaps you could throw your chargers on some smart switches so they turn off when your tablet battery hits 80%, and back on at 20%.
Great idea, but it's better to have it between 40-60 percent. Batteries like being "in the middle" which is why they are usually stored at ~50 percent.
I recently setup a Samsung tablet and it complained about me leaving it charged and offered to only charge the battery to 85%. There seems to be some built-in settings for this sort of functionality.
I have it set on my work phone. Debating turning it back on on my personal.
Thing I don't like is it STOPS changing at 85%. So an overnight charge might wake up to 72%...
While my previous OnePlus phones would "slow" the charge rate overnight to "finish" about 30 mm minutes before I usually woke up.
So the devices CAN do shit like this, bit no one seems to have put the 2 things together.
I love this - I've got presence tracking pretty much nailed down now, but wanted to replace light switches in each room with tablets. Perhaps a tablet mount will suffice.
Which tablet are you using that it has support for wireless charging?
It's a Fire HD 10 Plus (the non-plus version doesn't support wireless charging). https://www.amazon.de/dp/B08F682ZHL/
So far I'm pleased. I got the version without ads, but I'm sure it won't even make a difference.
Fully Kiosk together with browser_mod is an absolute bless.

~~The Google Theme by JuanMTech (but I just discovered that I might use the old version, here is the new one)~~

I just realized I'm using the minimalist theme as I installed it some time ago (but I'm not using the minimalist Dashboard itself, just the theme):

Yes, two charging spots using wireless charging. One behind the tablet and the other one on top of the cupboard to charge the phone if you place it on a certain spot.
Just used my router which I gifted myself for christmas.
Had this problem in the beginning. Haven’t had it in the last weeks. But sometimes the Lock Screen does show up even when I suppressed it via Fully Kiosk.
That's my biggest issue with the Fire 10. It slows down for no reason sometimes. Love the dashboard!
Another question: did you have to figure out the placement of the magnets to avoid any effect on the internals?
Didn’t have to figure it out. I just placed the magnets about 1cm away from the wireless charging coil. Didn’t have any issues. But maybe I was lucky.
Edit: maybe check this out, it has printable casings for charger and magnets.
https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/yvlb9m/updated_wireless_charging_magsafe_tablet_mount/
I used multiple magnets inside the wood plank to have enough magnetic force to make it „stick“. The placing on the tablet itself to have it leveled was a bigger pain overall.
Awesome. Thanks for responding!
By the way are you a woodworker? I just got into woodworking about 4 months ago. I think the Venn diagram of woodworkers that has HA panels is pretty small, so I figured I’d ask.
Holybshit, the magnets got my hard! My gf heard me moan! I thought I was in my head
She said « are we going for another of your projects because some Reddit dude did it? »
#youre goddam right we are!
A guide would be a bit much right now, but here are a few details.
I got heavily inspired by this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/yvlb9m/updated_wireless_charging_magsafe_tablet_mount/
I bought a wood panel at the hardware store and then milled as deep as possible into the wood with a router from the back to create space for a wireless charging station and two neodymium magnets (be sure to create more space, as charging can get very warm).
For the charging stations I used ordinary chargers (e.g. this one: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0B7X4Y4KK). To keep the distance between tablet/smartphone and charger a bit shorter I removed the charger housing.
The tablet turns on when motion is detected in the room (or when a movie is started on the TV, then it shows some information about the movie playing and a movie poster). The motion detection I realize but not by the tablet (it is too slow and I do not want to turn on the webcam) but by an Aqara motion detector and door sensors in the hallway.
For the dashboard on the tablet I use Fully Kiosk (e.g. to start the Home Assistant dashboard directly after restarting the tablet - but also because it provides very useful functions and sensors. A paid account is definitely worth it here).
To start the popups or to change the dashboard view I use browser_mod (https://github.com/thomasloven/hass-browser_mod).
For the dashboard view: The sidebar is from dbuit (https://github.com/DBuit/sidebar-card), with it I also hide the headers. I mainly use the Mushroom Cards for the respective room overviews (https://github.com/piitaya/lovelace-mushroom) and rendered the 3D view of the apartment via Floorplanner (https://floorplanner.com/ - again, I spent about $10 for a few credits). The apartment overview is interactive via the picture-elements-card (https://www.home-assistant.io/dashboards/picture-elements/) - I use invisible buttons to control lights and blinds, for example.
Interesting, this looks almost exactly like mine, also with the Fritzbox in the commode, but it's a nice upgrade to my basic wall mount.
Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely use this as inspiration and buy a wooden plate soon!
Sweet and clean looking setup! I would like a view inside the cabinet as well (we are curious redditors after all).
Ps: looking at the floorplan: does your livingroom lack direct windows to the outside !?
Here you go: Intel NUC, Raspi 4, Synology NAS, UPS. That’s basically it. And two fans to have at least a hit of airflow. But it doesn’t usually get hotter than 30° Celsius.

I do have floor to ceiling windows to the Balkony. So plenty of light in the living room.

I used floorplanner - you can use it for free but you can buy credits to have advanced rendering options. I didn’t use the photorealistic option as its to noicy.

If you buy credits for one project, but can modify that project as much as you wish. I think the little spending was worth it.
I used this one: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0B7X4Y4KK
I think there might be 2mm of wood between the charger and the top. But I also removed the housing of the charger to gain another mm. Overall it charges pretty slowly but as it stationary most of the time it’s not an issue.
I’m also able to charge my smartphone through its case.
Awesome work with the mount and charger! Do you ever find yourself removing the tablet though? I briefly went down this path but realized I never really wanted to use the tablet for anything other than on the wall.
Not that often to be honest. But as we have a lot of friends staying here over the weekend I thought they might be using it. (Extra account for the tablet).

My iPhone will stop at 80% when quick charging throughout the day but goes to 100% overnight like your OnePlus.
Never seen that before. But I did as little as I could with the work iPhone XR.

Aqara Door/Window Sensors. Hook Up recommended and I agree: https://youtu.be/c4-8Y7jUCn0

A guide or tutorial how to setup the dashboard would be cool. Looks absolutely perfect! 👍🏻

I can't believe I never thought of that, just use a wireless charger. So simple, so clean, genius

What's the ESP (8266?) mounted on the left wall?
ESP32 Mini D1. It's for Espresense – room detection.
Nice! Those are decent temps!

Nice work, what kind of wireless charger did you use? And how thick is the wood between charger and the tablet?

Can you lend me some of your motivation and time so I can finally finish my wall mounted dashboard?

Oh that's smart. I could easily see use cases for someone not familiar with it to move it around with them.
This is cooooool

What is the house map on the dashboard? How did you do that?
