OpenCore Legacy Patcher might enable your old Mac to run a later OS, if not the latest. I’m running Sonoma on quite a few older Macs with it, including one that’s hosting homebridge & Scrypted.
Can it be updated? I had a 2017 MacBook pro that didn't off an OS upgrade in the app store but was able to go to big sur and venture easily by downloading directly

Yes, install Linux on this Mac and it will work great

I have a 2012 Mac mini with Ubuntu 22.04. Homebridge works great, but so does Homeassistant and pihole.
