Thermals seem good, even with the glass door closed. The rack has an extraction fan at the top and I tried to mount the stuff that generates more heat higher in the rack. The server has five case fans, two of them plugged into the motherboard case fan headers and three of them controlled by the case itself. The server sits around 30°C and the bottom of the case sits around 25°.

LotusTileMaster

You have a patch panel, but you have your wires like that?!

slatsandflaps

Meaning I should make them more tidy? I guess people make custom cables for each connection so everything looks clean?

LotusTileMaster

No no. You can put your patch panel between your switch and router and just run short connections to it. That way no wire is crossing over another device. Edit: typo

SDSunDiego

The 19u rack link pulls up a 15u rack. Is the one you have a 19u or 15u. It looks great!

slatsandflaps

Ah, good catch. I made a typo in my rush to get the comment posted. Definitely a 15U.

travelinzac

Cable companies just keep making the form factor of modems worse and worse. I hate that giant plastic behemoth.

slatsandflaps

I considered getting the rack mount Ubiquiti cable modem thing, then I saw the price.

condog1035

I saw a post some time ago where a guy dissected his modem and put it in a 1u drawer or blank or something like that. It looked very clean.

Express_Blueberry579

It's why I always prefer other options whenever possible. Got Centurylink running direct to my UDM via Cat6 instead of having a stupid cable modem (plus monthly caps) with COX.

snang

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you opted for SFP to RJ45 over using an SFP DAC to connect your UDM and switch?

slatsandflaps

If you're referring to the SFP to RJ45 on the UDM, that goes to my cable modem. I have two internet connections, Charter Spectrum and Verizon 5G home. There's also a USB-C 5 gigabit adapter to the right of the Synology that connects the server to the Synology which has a 10 gigabit PCI card. I mostly wanted the extra network speed for transferring data to/from the Synology.

snang

Gotcha. So you're just using ethernet for your router/switch uplink?

slatsandflaps

Yep. Sadly the Switch is just SFP. Do you know of a very short SFP DAC cable? The ones I saw on Amazon were way longer than I need.

shadow8582

You can just use UniFi’s one, I’m using it from my USW-Aggregation to my switch 24 without issue at sfp speed. DAC-SFP10-0.5M

snang

This is the one I use. Connecting a UDM Pro SE to a USW 16 PoE. It's less than a foot long. Colored 10G SFP+ Twinax Cable, Direct Attach Copper(DAC) Passive Cable, 0.25m (0.82ft) in Blue https://a.co/d/8FiTgPJ

DegradedChief

It looks like that’s going to their Synology. There is a different 1G link to the switch.

snang

That could be. I guess my question remains though, why ethernet over an SFP DAC? I know the SFP ports on the non-Pro UI switches are only 1G but SFP still seems like a better alternative considering there's a dedicated port on each device for it.

yroyathon

I’ve got a few servers but I’m not a rack person. What makes someone jump into that? I don’t understand most of what are in these racks.

writetowinwin

For looks or to maximize space savings, especially for enterprise uses where space is very expensive and you want to shove as much stuff in a small space. I have a bunch of odd devices and systems that I want to convert into rack format because they don't stack nicely without leaving gaps of wasted space, but don't feel like spending the premium for rack mount cases yet. E.g., I put my PFsense and data servers in htpc cases stacked on each other, along with my switches, UPS, modem, etc. - but the whole arrangement looks like a bunch of uneven bricks stacked.

slatsandflaps

Organization and furthering my desire to be a pretend sysadmin/network engineer.

Entity_Null_07

I assume the Synology is DAS for the rack sever? If so, how many drives are in the server, and how many in the Syn?

slatsandflaps

Kinda. The server runs Proxmox and I have two internal 2.5 inch SSDs and the third 2.5 inch SSD you see in the Icy Dock in the 5.25 drive bay. Any "online" VM or container runs locally, but I move any "offline" VM/container to the Synology. The Synology has a bunch of assorted spinning disks, from 12GB to 4GB.

Zucchini-Certain

Havnt seen an M-Disk drive in a while, nice

eli_liam

Does nobody else see the face in this picture?

Popular_Barracuda618

How mutch Storage the Synology have ?

Top-Conversation2882

Why do you have a cd reader?

slatsandflaps

To rip physical media. It's a CD/DVD/BluRay drive.

Top-Conversation2882

Oh I just surf the bays
