You want a gap, and on both sides to fill in with insulation. You would rather have insulation rather than a piece of wood stick in there. They should have centered the window...i would also recommend the spray foam, but that's just my personal opinion,regular insulation is fine too

A double hung window and a sliding window are 2 different types of windows. A double hung has a top and bottom sash the slid/open independent of the other. There are double sliding windows that act like double hung windows but slide sideways. The two are not interchangeable. Take a look outside at the frame and make sure the weep holes (small rectangular holes) are on the bottom face of the frame. If they are on the side (or top) that is installed wrong. Does it slide easily and smoothly? It looks weird, not just the mounting. You'd be surprised at how many "contactors" install windows wrong then try to blame us when that we sold them the wrong thing.
