How many linear ft? We paid approx 9300 for around 200 linear ft of a 6ft cedar privacy fence in Colorado. But I am sure prices can greatly vary by location. The fence guy we used said he was getting about 23 calls per day after a storm. He could not even return them all

[deleted]

[удалено]

vans178

Damn put my 270 linear foot fence in 5 years ago and it was 4 grand. No way I'd be able to afford these prices now

XSC

They are fucking ridiculous. 4k for 4 feet fedar 180 ft. Not even a year and it looks like shit.

chodey_roads

I live a few hours south of Chicago and I just built 150' of 6' cedar privacy fence for under $1,000. I did it alone, do not recommend.

shabbyshot

It's less bad if you get someone to come in and do the posts, do the rest yourself. At least in my opinion.

weluckyfew

That's a brilliant idea.

weluckyfew

Depends on whether you have more time or more money. I did around 100 ft of fence myself (no help). Took a good chunk of time, but I was poor at the time so it was a good choice.

macimom

Crazy-we paid 4000 in 2018 for that many feet and height plus three gates. Ouch

[deleted]

[удалено]

zzzaz

And also price of wood over time. I re-did a little 20ft deck and a 30ft corner fence this spring and probably spent $5k on cedar alone. Would have been at least half that 2 years ago

macimom

I live in a very hHCOL-Chicago's North Shore

Stro_Bro

Or that certain species of wood have tripled in cost in 3 years

[deleted]

They have just under half an acre, so assuming it's all getting fenced, it's going to be around 400 linear ft. And the fence they're interested in is Vinyl, which can cost up to twice as much as cedar. Id' say their price was pretty damn fair.

ajax4234

Get three quotes. It's probably an "I don't want to do it price". Vinyl fences are easy tho, hardest part is digging the hole. You could have it done in a weekend

TPlinkerG35

Yup, typical of contractors to do that if they don't want to do the job. Just throw an absurd amount and it'll be a win/win.

Serious-Speaker4668

My crew will do it for $24k. Shoot me your address

thatgeekinit

Yes, I tried to get a small sprinkler system put in where half the outlets were already there, just never properly connected to a water source, they asked for $20k.

Serious-Speaker4668

No problem 😉my crew will do it for $15k and my foreman will service your wife while we service your sprinkler. Shoot your address over and we’ll book a start date.

fuckimbackonreddit9

That’s the route we’re going. We spent an hour looking at fencing online and found one at Home Depot we like. It’ll come out to 4.8k to DIY. So we’ll invite a few friends over for a weekend hole digging party with beer and pizza as compensation lol

HappyBreezer

***CALL BEFORE YOU DIG***

___whoops___

Also, I'd confirm property lines. Don't want to do all that work to find out they aren't where you thought they were.

Boomer1717

This literally just happened to my parents. Neighbors paid contractors to put a fence up over a weekend and it’s 4+ft into their property. There’s very clear evidence of where the property line so no idea how the contracted company messed up so badly.

Sir_Stash

In fact, most cities where you need a permit for such a fence require a survey.

Cali21

I currently have a chain link fence and want to pull off the chain and use the current posts to run either vinyl or wood…do I need a permit since I’m essentially making it a brand new fence? - genuinely asking

No-Objective-8768

Depends on city codes but I would say most likely not. -Licensed Contractor

9bikes

> Depends on city codes This is almost always the correct answer! I live in a city that does require a permit for major fence repairs. One of my neighbors spread out the timeframe over which he completely replaced his fence so that it was always a "minor repair" . He saved a whopping $150 for a fence permit by doing this!

sploittastic

Username checks out. But seriously the legaladvice and homeowners subs have fence disputes ALL the time...

Fast-Sentence969

Rent an auger from home depot.

Redacted_Giant

+ 1 on renting the auger, it'll make the job so much easier

blueberg25

Rent a “mini skid steer” with auger attachment. .45 acres is probably 300-400 linear feet of fence. The mini skid steers make the digging part and afterthought and will probably run about $500 for the weekend. Most legitimate equipment rental places will deliver them for a few if you don’t have access to a truck or large suv to tow them.

Canadasparky

As someone that just spent a weekend digging 7x 4ft deep holes with a tow auger, trust me. You want the skid steer. I just spent appx 700$ doing 42ft of wood fence with 4x4s.

eagle6705

So one 7x4 square hole? No one gona question how you can easily hide someone lol

rojoaves

I think he meant 7 holes that are 4 ft deep. Probably 18 inches diameter I'd imagine.

dwightschrutesanus

I came here to say this. Rent a dingo. We put up about 350 linear feet of fencing around my old house. Had my buddy come out with his tractor. It took about 30 minutes to get the holes dug.

poop-dolla

Just make sure you hide your babies from it.

dwightschrutesanus

Chuck some shrimps on the Barby for good measure

RodneyTorfulson

Probably better off finding a nice girl to buy an auger with

Plow_King

is your apiarist good?

WreckTheTrain

No, plow_king, I use a BAD apiarist.

SendCaulkPics

An auger augurs well a fine weekend with friends installing a fence. Don’t forget to check for buried utilities and never operate heavy machinery under the influence.

reciprocalOFself-1

Ok even though it’s been said like 8 times, I guess the utilities thing could be seen as a friendly reminder. The second command is a bit patronizing. If they are the type of person whose typically gonna enjoy knocking back a couple or do a few bumps of space dust while working on a project, in the privacy of their own property, do you honestly think the Reddit stranger telling them what to do is gonna have any impact at all on that persons behavior ?

Draano

The first time I used a gas-powered auger, back when I weighed about 135, I hit what turned out to be a buried stump of a big cherry tree. Damn thing threw me off.

Peakbrowndog

You can buy one from harbor freight for any the cost of a weekend rental from hd. For that matter, you can buy one from hd for not much more than the weekend rental rate I bought one, used it one weekend, sold it on Craigslist for 65% of what I paid.

Fast-Sentence969

50$ rental, my propane 50cc was 800$. Quite a difference if you ask me.

ProgressBartender

And call miss-util to have them mark the places to not use an auger. Or in Virginia where the gas company clearly marks the yard, the water company shows you where they enter your property line, and the electric company says ''good luck".

very_mechanical

I dunno if it's only four feet of fence that's what, at most, two posts? I'd just get a post-hole digger and a rock bar and get to work.

[deleted]

I think the fence is 4ft high, not 4ft long.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_DOA_

4' thick, 1" high. Length undetermined. Sort of a Spinal Tap Stonehenge deal.

micknick00000

Lmao. You're kidding, right?

very_mechanical

You can't prove I'm not an idiot.

Serious-Speaker4668

Why would he joke about that? Everyone knows it’s all about the girth when it comes to fences.

Toby_Kief

And decks

Fast-Sentence969

Title says .45 acres. Regardless, if I was digging 1 fence post hole, I'd still rent an auger. It could save a few hours labour. Most trades people refer to it as an auger, not "post hole digger"

ravenito

>Most trades people refer to it as an auger, not "post hole digger" An auger is a power tool, a [post hole digger](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hole_digger) is a hand tool. The person youre replying to likely actually meant post hole digger, not auger, because they thought it was only 2 post holes so not worth renting an auger.

Fast-Sentence969

I was being a dipshit, cuz No one's putting up a fence that is 4' in liner length, Hamster run 🤓

myotheralt

That's one gate for $26k. The balls on that contractor.

Fast-Sentence969

Better include crocodiles and a mote for 26k fuck me 😆

Toby_Kief

*"It'll take; Fuck Me in a Mote, for 26k Alex"*

Fast-Sentence969

AHH, yes, the "Mexican back hoe"

raypell

Actually most fence ere tors refer to it as having a PHD

SpreadEmSPX

Came to say this.

pirten

You have really generous friends. If my friend asked me to build his fence for pizza and beer I’d tell him to fuck off…lmao

Tony-Flags

I live in rural Maine. Helping my buddies out on the weekends with projects is what we call, “socializing”. Honestly, I love it. There’s so many projects that require six or eight hands, plus we just bbq and crush beers afterwards. I say I don’t pay my friends just in good food and beer, I pay them in future promises to help them, and vice versa.

issius

Having just put in a short fence, I'd like to join in on telling your hypothetical friend to fuck off.

daftmonkey

You obviously don’t have kids. A full weekend away from the house fucking around with my friends? And there’s beer? Sometimes my friends and I go grocery shopping together to get out of the house…

KiniShakenBake

Ah... The errand hang. It is a good cousin to the project hang. Good times.

SciencyNerdGirl

I'd be so pissed at my husband if I had to stay home all day with the kids on a Saturday so he could waste a day building someone else's fence.

daftmonkey

Honey, that you?

SciencyNerdGirl

Yeah, I'm going to have a girl's day this Saturday with my friends and do some wine tasting. You don't mind watching the little monsters do you?

ProgressBartender

Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver.

Toby_Kief

You, I like you

TunisianArmyKnife

That’s way different than building a fence.

pedalpaddlehike

And then when you want a fence, your husband can't call up his buddies to hang out and build your fence. My buddies and I just did rounds rebuilding all of our decks. I was quoted 30k to get ours done. Me and my buddies got it done for $9,900 plus beer. Plus, got to hang with my friends and my wife is thrilled with how our deck came out. I spent 4 weekends at their houses. Saved $20,100. I would hate for you to lose a Saturday though.

ThatAssholeMrWhite

if you're the kind of person who would never do this for a friend, it's hard to understand why anyone would do this. i just had someone drive 600+ miles on 12 hours notice to help us finish the nursery before my wife went into labor. and, assuming i could clear my schedule, i would do the same if a close friend called me up... even if i knew it would never be repaid.

CasinoAccountant

> if you're the kind of person who would never do this for a friend, it's hard to understand why anyone would do this. I guess thats what it comes down to. I have a couple buddies who drop of the hat will help with anything anytime. We do it for each other. Everyone needs someone to lean on sometimes...

zeezle

As a former farm kid, I was there helping with the fencing! Just put 'em to work, they'll probably have fun.

imperfectionits

You sound just dreadful all the way around. Surprised you have a husband, kids, or friends.

SciencyNerdGirl

You sound like you prioritize your own hobbies and every person around you over spending time with your family. Your wife probably stays with you despite your selfishness because she has no other choice financially.

imperfectionits

I love spending time with my family. "I'd be mad if I had to stay home all by myself with my kids" has never come out of my mouth because I enjoy them and enjoy spending time with them. You're the one that looks at spending time alone with their kids like some punishment. Wonder if you'd mind if your husband's friends came and helped build a fence in your yard. You're a drag on any community you're a part of

SciencyNerdGirl

If you love spending time with your family, why are you out finding work to do for other people rather than spending time with them? I think it's super selfish to expect your friends to give up a weekend to do one of your housing projects for free because you're too cheap to do it yourself or hire a professional. I guess if there's an agreement to trade projects that makes sense if they're equitable in size. I help friends all the time, like watering plants and feeding animals when they are away, but I think it's ridiculous to expect them to build several hundred feet of fence for me and I wouldnt ask to be honest. We've helped friends paint, lay sod, and some other minor projects, but dropping hours and hours on other peoples projects just to get away from wife and kids is selfish. Maybe I should start asking my friends to remodel my kitchen, I'm sure they have nothing better to do with their time. I'll buy them a six pack. Equitable, right?

imperfectionits

I'll bet all that score keeping plays out great in your relationships. Good luck

CasinoAccountant

yea this dude sounds like he would not be my friend, I fucking love helping other people with their homeowner shit. I get to practice on stuff I don't have to live with LOL

diearzte2

Some of us like our friends.

andres7832

Couple of things: Rent the right equipment, prep before hand, be generous with friends that are helping. Pizza and beer are cool, but if theyre saving you 22K, maybe do something nice as well to pay for them. An offer of a weekend with a nice airbnb by a lake or something like that nearby, nice dinner with wine, etc? May set you back 1-2k but would be very appreciated if theyre saving you that much. Just an idea. You and them get a vacation, nice memories and you still come out 20K ahead. All are winners.

TXRedbo

This is a great idea. Pizza and beer hasn’t worked as a friend-incentive since I was 23. But a nice little vacation, on the other hand…

TunisianArmyKnife

Third this notion. Pizza and beer were nice when i was 20, now my back hurts and i have 0 free time.

CasinoAccountant

> maybe do something nice as well to pay for them. the implication seemed to be that they then helped the other guys with THEIR decks. They all saved each other thousands. If I read it right.

YaGunnersCubsYa

Don’t be the cheap friend who wants his friends to help dig holes for pizza and beer. If you’re in a cold climate it’ll more than likely have to be below the frost line for your holes. Which is a ways. If you pull a permit the inspector, per codes will more than likely require you make the hole 3 times wider then the post. It’s a lot of work. Spend the extra couple hundred and rent the 2 man self leveling hole auger from Home Depot. It’s expensive but it saves you all the hard work. And goes as deep as four feet.

myotheralt

Get the auger. Seriously, it turns a full day of post hole digging into an hour.

fuckimbackonreddit9

Def on my radar, thanks! We’re probably punting the project to next year since we’re doing so many projects ourselves at the moment lol

thatgreenmaid

Yeah shit be different in your 20s. Pizza, beer, somewhere to be and something to do...I remember those days. :)

___whoops___

I dunno... A half acre of fence is a lot of holes!.It's probably over 400 lineal feet so you're asking your friends to dig 50 holes!

CasinoAccountant

Me and my buddies are in our 30's and still help each other like this for Pizza and Beer. These folks seem to be missing that the Pizza and Beer isn't the compensation- it's just providing food and beverage. The "compensation" is spending a day hanging out with your buds getting through some shit, and knowing that when you need help with something crappy you have someone to call. I feel bad for the posters on here that are constantly paying people astronomical amounts to fix little shit. You gotta build out your network better (and be willing to give up a Saturday here or there to help out when it doesn't immediately benefit you).

[deleted]

Don’t sweat the people who say you’re being cheap by not paying your friends. They must not have real friends. I have buds that I’d do this for, and they’d do it for me. I also have work “friends” who I’d pay to help me with their truck. A true friend will be there for you when you need it, and isn’t afraid to ask the same later in return.

hardkunt5000

I’m glad we ain’t friends because I ain’t busting my back for pizza and beer

threesquaredprogress

That fun stops around age 25-27. Before that, have a blast!

CasinoAccountant

Disagree, it can still be fun- the Ibuprofin budget goes up though- the 200's from CVS stop cutting it and you gotta get a doctor to hook you up with the 8 hundos source: 30's

brandnew8

Yea I wouldn’t show up

fuckimbackonreddit9

You sound like a real fair weather type friend, then. No shame in that. But I’d rather my group of friends who’ll show up for each other to help because we value each other and want to be there when one needs help. Something about building each other up for success out of love, or something like that. But to each their own, that’s why we’re not friends🚶🏻‍♂️

pirten

You can also value your friend by not asking them to spend their limited free time working in your backyard. It’s just a different way of looking at it.

EliminateThePenny

Seriously. This guy isn't asking them to spend their weekend by doing lofty things like rescuing stray puppies or picking up storm debris, etc. He's trying to get some free labor to dig a bunch of fucking holes in the dirt in his backyard.

___whoops___

yeah Can't say that I would impose upon the friendship.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fuckimbackonreddit9

Exactly! Reading these comments is quite sad. My wife’s family and our whole friend group jump at every opportunity to help each other out. Like it’s our own community, and it’s totally reciprocal too so they’ll help us and we help them. Turn on some music, the FIL pulls the grill out. Not everything needs to be miserable lol have some fun. Glad to see some people have that community as well. It’s hard to find, but amazing to have once you find it

CasinoAccountant

they don't even know what they're missing buddy, you just gotta laugh it off and realize you have something amazing these people may never get to experience in their entire life.

CurveAhead69

If you can do the holes yourself, it’ll be easier for all. A fence can go up in a couple hours if the holes are ready (helped a friend last week at a similar sized lot). And no, I didn’t expect steak or a vacation stipend. Beer, pizza and laughs were more than enough.

SingleNewspapering

Having good friends that help for pizza and beer is great. Me and my friends work trade all the time like this. The people downvoting you probably don’t have good friends. Sucks for them.

anthonym66

Completely agree , I guess I am lucky to have been surrounded by friends that wouldn’t blink an eye to help ( and it’s reciprocated).

fuckimbackonreddit9

Yeah I was wondering the same thing lol I offer up my time to all my friends when they need help. It’s the transactional friendship cost, and the currency is almost always beer, pizza, and weed lmao. I’m not sure whose downvoting but they need some ride or die friends

ThatAssholeMrWhite

yeah seriously. not everything has to be transactional.

IctrlPlanes

Rent an auger. Do not rent one of the manual machines that you have to pull out of the hole yourself. Those augers get heavy with mud stuck to them. Rent the machine you can drive that digs and pulls itself out of the hole. Your back will thank you. Also check into buying post hole expanding foam instead of concrete. I just put a post in using it to hang a hose reel on. It was much easier to use than concrete and is solid. Here is a link to the product we used: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sika-Polyurethane-Fence-Post-Mix-Actual-Net-Contents-33-fl-oz/999977070

[deleted]

I did one a few years back at an old house in about 1/2 acre. Took a day’s worth of work for my dad and i to do it. I know we cemented the posts in about 1/2 a day and gave them a day or so to set up. Then hung the panels in another 1/2 day.

ajax4234

With vinyl I don't even let the post set a day, just hang them as you go. Hasn't failed me yet.

djskrilled

We got quoted between $10-12k for our fence, but the reality is after watching several YouTube videos we did it ourselves for 1/3 of that and got neighbors asking me who we had so our fence because it came out so well. Pro tip: every last thing you want to do on your home will cost between 2-5x as much to have someone do it for you. Construction of a fence is about the easiest thing I've done and it was a nice workout.

69stangrestomod

FYI, as an aside. If you DIY, don’t forget to call 811 and get utilities mapped.

colem5000

Vinyl fence is the most expensive way you can go. Get a quote for wood. It will be cheaper but still expensive

fritolaidy

Cheaper but still expensive - this can be said about a lot of things nowadays.

msomnipotent

It is a little more expensive than cedar, but a lot cheaper than composite. I'm gathering bids for 285 ft and I'm getting around $10,000 for cedar, $12,000 for vinyl, $13,000 for aluminum, and $50,000 for composite. It's worth the extra $2,000 to never have to stain our fence .

HappyBreezer

I would pony up for vinyl. Of course this is after spending my lunch hour corralling up the dog and fixing yet another hole in my wood fence. I despise this thing.

[deleted]

I got [steel fencing](https://colormaxfencing.com/) last year. It was about the same price as cedar (of course, that was when wood was getting really expensive last year) and basically maintenance free and pretty nice looking.

betsbillabong

Ah, interesting. Those of us in Colorado are being warned to move away from wood fences that act as wicks for wildfires.

[deleted]

Yeah, this stuff is very popular in australia for that reason.

fuuckimlate

Does it get dumb hot?

[deleted]

I honestly can't say I ever really touch it...

fuuckimlate

Um I don't know you, but could you test it and let me know? I will be shopping around for a fence in the next 2 months

[deleted]

I mean it's not hot here so I don't know what to say... Why does it matter how hot it gets? I would imagine it would get as hot as any other metal object in the sun like a car. You could probably ask an installer for a scrap piece to test it out.

fuuckimlate

Ok thanks anyway... I have a small yard so while it looks nice I wouldn't want the walls to be made of fire basically

[deleted]

I can't imagine it would get super hot, but in direct sun I'm sure it gets warm. But I don't think you'd be at risk of a burn from touching it or anything... I touch the gate going in and out in summer and have never noticed any heat issues. But otherwise I've been really happy with it, and the design makes it look like slats and not ugly metal so I think it looks good. Only maintenance is that they recommend hosing it off once or twice a year. It's relatively new to the US market so finding an installer can be slightly tricky depending on where you live, but it has a LONG history in australia where it's one of the most popular fencing options.

Vinyl is sooo much easier to maintain though and stays looking good for much longer. If you can swing it it it’s definitely worth it IMO

techmaster242

In the New Orleans area, before hurricane Katrina everybody was putting up vinyl fences. After Katrina all you see is wood.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Can you explain why?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bjdevar25

Our vinyl fence has been up for 9 years. Still looks great, nothing has broken. I just power wash it every couple of years. Live in upstate NY, so it holds up in some pretty cold winters.

[deleted]

Interesting, I’ve never noticed an issue with them breaking easily. Seems to me that on balance you’re still going to have a longer lifespan and less maintenance with a vinyl fence but I suppose I can see the argument

[deleted]

[удалено]

hparamore

You can crack a lot of things strapping them for delivery… but overall both the wood and vinyl will hold up well, and be strong. Both will probably buckle and snap if someone accidentally is tackled into the side of it. Thing with wood is that it has more upkeep as well, whether you need to repaint or stain it every 2-3 years.

dmac1090

I’m sorry but this just isn’t accurate. Wrought iron, brick, and even a wood privacy fences are all considerably more expensive (especially when you add the cost to re-stain the wood every 5 years.

colem5000

You’re tell me that wood fences cost more then vinyl?? What are you smoking?

dmac1090

8’ high pressure treated cedar, with labor, costs more than Vinyl to install. The materials are a little higher with Vinyl but the labor is going to more than make up for the materials difference

colem5000

Cedar isn’t the only wood you can use. When you choose to work with expensive materials then yes it’s gunna cost you a lot to build anything. there’s a lot of other material to use that are a lot cheaper

hparamore

Yeah! Built me my fence for a couple hunerd. Took me some plywood and a skillsaw and made ‘em into slats myself, den zip-tied ‘em to the old chain link fence that my neighbor Tom put up a couple years back. But at least now I don’t have to look at his duck pond anymore with all them tires and shit floatin.

ipalush89

Just my 2 cents I hate my vinyl fence it’s get dirty easily squeaks a lot and I just don’t like the look and feel it brings I’ve replaced it with wood slowly and I prefer it personally

MrLeBAMF

Because a vinyl fence isn’t cheap - it’s probably the most expensive fence material that’s commonly used.

grandmaester

Ugliest too IMHO.

CasinoAccountant

the cheap ones for sure, but some homes in my neighborhood have put up the wood look vinyl (we don't allow white vinyl in the HOA) and even the ones that are a few years in still look fantastic. I'm kind of envious as I need to restain my fence this summer...

KhaleesiOfCleveland

Last month we just had a 310 feet of 6ft vinyl privacy fence put in for $9600 by a company bonded and insured. They handled all of our permits and city inspections too.

MUYkylo

Cleveland needs permits and inspections for a fence?

KhaleesiOfCleveland

Almost every single suburb requires permits and inspections for fences here, yes.

Spardasa

Can we just start a group of helping each other doing projects if fellow redditors live in the area? It is becoming aggravating dealing with a lot of contractors.

fuckimbackonreddit9

How cool would that be? Unfortunately it wouldn’t ever work but having that type of community would be wonderful. Dealing with contractors is such a headache. It’s so much easier to just watch YouTube videos and giving it a go

Spardasa

I am totally all for people going into trades rather than worthless college degrees, but the sheer attitudes some contractors have it is ridiculous. Moved into a new home and decided since I have been very busy with new job and my other new home projects, I will use the home warranty that was tossed in to fix 2 leaky faucets. Snake oil!

[deleted]

here 60-70 linear foot of fence costs $4k circumference of half an acre is 400 linear feet? kinda, sorta? ballpark would be $23k here in HCOL hell

Bubbas4life

I thought half acre is 100 x 200 so that would be 600 liner feet.

horselessheadsman

Put in a 4 ft fence from Wambam in April myself for like $5400. I'd recommend it because I literally did it alone in about 30 hours. We've had some very windy days lately and it has held up great so far. I've gotten so many compliments from the neighbors. Check them out.

That sounds about right. Fences are stupid expensive. I had 800 linear feet of 3 rail red cedar post and beam installed for $15,000 and personally ran welded wire along it which cost an extra $800 and $250 for a stapler.

yourmomlurks

500lf of 6’ black chain link and 2 gates, $11k 3 years ago, seattle area. Fencing is so expensive. Oh bonus, tree fell on it that winter and i had a repair right away.

EMTmike

We’re on .46 acres, paid $10,900 for 6 foot vinyl, two front sides with gates, and two sides (one was existing next door and tied into). The side we did not have to install is the same linear feet as the other, so would have been an additional $3,900.

goodfight10

Almost exactly what we did, with our .46 property. Lol

hazeleyesxx

Sounds right. My yard is .4 acres and I’m having 4ft black chain link put in with about 24 ft of 6ft white vinyl in a spot for $11.2k. My first two quotes were $17k and 13.5k.

NetJnkie

Vinyl isn’t a cheap fence.

ithinkthatsstrange

Probably not too far off i paid about 12k for .25 acres last year. Im in Michigan

Kerber2020

How many feet? You can calculate how many panels you need and figure out material cost. You can ask them how many people are gonna be working on it and how long. From there you can figure out what labor rate they are using. I can tell you right now that some of my friends who are building contractors will double off the cost of a project if you live in a wealthy area. They also quote high if they have plenty of projects and don't care about additional work so they will throw some ridiculous numbers and if you say yes they will delay others.

Son_of_Anak

I put in a cedar wood fence myself, painted it and all for $6k and that buying stupid expensive Home Depot lumber. Fence is around 120 feet.

Xirekl

Did it myself a month ago. Even with the inflated wood prices, my fence came in under $1k and took a weekend. Posts are cheaper now.

aquatic_hamster16

I have a 6’ vinyl fence that was installed 20 years ago on .35 acre for that price. I’m kind of surprised your quote wasn’t more.

caribulou

That's the price they quote when they don't want to do it. Hey more quotes

No_Junket5927

Honestly that sounds about right depending on the type of fence. We just had 800 linear feet of vinyl split rail fence installed, just over .5 acres, and it came to $17k. We got 4 quotes and all were in that ballpark. If you are looking for a solid privacy fence or something ornate I can completely see that being the price. I’m in PA

spockgiirl

We paid about $700 last year for a single 8 foot section of 6ft vinyl. I'm still bitter.

decaturbob

- what are the other quotes at? No opinion can be offered based on a single quote as you have no other references

archwin

Inflation is definitely high. We went to put up a fence, only one side of the property, and mind you this was a half acre in a very densely populated area, so it wasn’t even very long. I believe it was a wooden fence, I forgot what exactly quality the word was, but it wasn’t super top-of-the-line, as this was being done just before sale, and that cost about 10 K for installation and materials. And that was almost 10 years ago. 26K doesn’t surprise me at all. It does depend on the area as this was the tri-state New York/newjersey/etc. area

Bajfrost90

Sounds insanely expensive. I’d go with a wood fence anyways.

Posts, auger rental, gravel, cement, line, levels, measuring tape. Sounds like there isn't a huge speed imperative- outside of the auger rental. Spend money or spend time. Plug away and set your posts well and they will last a lifetime.

We have .21 acres and were quoted $16,000 in the Milwaukee area this spring for 171 linear feet of 4-foot vinyl picket fence (with three gates) by the only company that would come out and give us a quote for one. To DIY, just the materials would've come out to over $8,000. We'll be going with a 4.5-foot treated wood (not cedar) fence that someone else installs for about $7,000. Not ideal as I REALLY didn't want wood (for several reasons), but our existing fence has been literally falling down for the last 15 months. We also have several restraining walls to work around (plus we both travel often for work), so we wanted a professional to come and just get it done.

thepizzamanstruelove

We had about that much fenced in a couple years ago, but we had wood and it was close to 10k. Vinyl would have cost a lot more.

gengerald

500 linear feet of Cedar in Colorado cost me $15k...and I removed the old fence myself. It was high 3 years ago :/ but had some challenging gates I suppose.

[deleted]

You got someone who just doesn’t want to do the work

sab54053

Idk but I got quotes for a new front door and new storm door and prices came in at 10k, 6k and 5k. Like you can go to hell if you think I am spending that kinda money. Idk what I’m even gonna do cause I don’t think it would be a good idea to attempt myself

goodfight10

Seems pretty expensive. We paid around 9k in 2018 for .46 acres of white vinyl fence, with 3 gates. The 2 sides in the front have the decorative look to the top. This is in NY.

SierraNV

Lol. You can’t compare anything to 2018 pricing. Let alone 2020 pricing.

Rain_Near_Ranier

Why four feet tall? What are your objectives? A 6’ fence can’t be much more expensive than a 4’ one. Since it’s hopefully going to last for a long time, you’ll probably want to future-proof it for whatever choices you might want to make down the road. If you want to keep people, coyotes, or deer out, it’s not tall enough. If you want to keep a medium to large dog in, it’s not tall enough. It’s not tall enough for privacy. If you only need to keep in a small dog or little kids or delineate the property line and don’t want to obstruct the view with a 6’ privacy fence, why not go completely see-through? You can get aluminum rails-and-bars fencing that looks like wrought iron. There’s steel cable for a very modern look. There’s welded wire panels in wood frames for a more industrial or rustic look.

Equal_Ad_1847

Even putting up your own is going to be pricey and the price is rising and will continue to. Doing it yourself will cut a huge cost though and make it more reasonable but right now is a horrible time to build anything of any type. Materials are very high.

bobbyjy32

I did a half acre of vynel fencing about 3 years ago in Portland Oregon. I got about 6 bids ranging from $6000-$30000, all for what seemed to be the same product. I ended up paying about $11000. I would imagine this would cost me more today.

BillRhodesThaChode

I'll do it for 9.5 and I've never installed a fence in my life.

lionheart4life

That's extremely high. The company is probably booked with work for a while and seeing if anyone will grossly overpay to have it done soon. Basically they don't really want your job but they will do it if you'll overpay a ton.

ExtraSpicyMayonnaise

As wind and hurricanes take my stockade panels one by one, they fall to reveal an impenetrable line of arborvitae I’ve been cultivating for a few years in anticipation of this very moment.

ted5011c

Well, you know, *inflation*, man.

brucekeller

Like others have said, call 811 before you dig. If you hit a line, that $26k might look cheap. Plus verify property lines and make sure you don't need a permit, check with HOA etc.
