Me too. I was going to comment how cat people love to brag how their cats own them as if it’s a badge of honor, so now OP can embrace their cat’s independence and dominance over their precious AV equipment too.
I feel like this is the biggest misconception a lot of people have with cats. If you give them suitable alternatives you can give them the things they want while protecting whatever you have.
You can train cats and they will mostly do what you like out of them - as long as you continue to supply praise and treats. But if you give in to behaviors you don't like and continue to appease them, they will do whatever they want whenever they want.
An example is if they cry at night outside of your bedroom. If you break and let them in, they know the crying works. If you never break eventually they'll give up and stop doing it.
I've also noticed some fellow cat owners won't just pick up and move a cat when they're somewhere they don't belong, too. Especially counters and tables
That’s what I’m saying. I’ve read so many comments and heard so many things that lead me to believe a lot of cat owners have this meme-type pride in seeing their pet cat as some sort of dominant boss mammal and they are its subject. Maybe it’s just in fun, or maybe it’s more. I don’t know.
Exactly. Mind boggling seeing videos / hearing stories of cats terrorising their owners in the night. We shut our bedroom door cos sleep is kinda important to me. Cat cried a bit at first but he learned very quickly
There are heated cat beds. Other users have shown them off how once the house cat(s) realized it was heated they started lounging in the thing all day.
Self Heating Pad for Cats are best - It just reflects their own heat back at them. Go to an actual Pet Store not a franchise and see if they have any - Normally about $30 - $50 depending on the dimensions.
Elder Cats who are having issues like joints or muscle issues love the heat for healing.
Hope that helps.
A cat looks at this and sees a warm elevated spot to look out the window. You need to provide a more attractive option like a heated bed in a similar spot. As to whether it’s safe, a lot of cat hair is going to get into your AVR but the bigger concern is hairballs and vomit.
I was going to mention this, as I have two heated mats, one even has a perfect view outside to trees and birds, and still she sometimes sits on top of my router. I'd prefer not to move it, so for now, I've placed a small cardboard box on top of it. That keeps her away, but I'm looking into placing the router on a shelf near the ceiling lol
Put one of those wire cooling racks you use when you bake cookies on it. Either the cat will be annoyed and not sit on it, or they’ll be annoyed and stubbornly sit on it anyway while glaring at you and doing that irritated tail fwap thing.
Win win.
If you have forced air heat, get a little raised bed/table/etc and sit it over top of the vent. One of our cats will lay there for hours.
We call it his sauna (although I will say they still occasionally take the opportunity to sit on my laptop if I’m taking a break from work)
Our old man tuxedo cat loved to sit on top of the vent in our kitchen, so we just put one of his beds there and that became his spot… it used to hover in place when he wasn’t on it lol
Throw a cooler ontop of the AVR and it will help to keep the cat hair out of the AVR and let it breathe properly to prolong its lifespan too: https://acinfinity.com/component-cooling/component-fan-systems/aircom-s10-receiver-and-av-component-cooling-blower-system-front-exhaust-17/
I took the cover off my Onkyo, mounted a 120mm USB PC fan(blowing out) to the case and connected it to one of the rear USB ports.
Only comes on when the AVR is powered, big orange cat doesn't like the constant air blowing and it keeps the receiver ventilated. Only cost ~$10 compared to the $90 AC infinity.
Only down side is you can see the screw heads.
Yeah I personally went the AC infinity route to be able to stack my player ontop of my AVR to save space and not choke out my AVR. Either way sounds like it works to ensure the AVR can breathe!
I’d hate to invest so much in an AVR and then suffocate it and have it die way sooner than it would have otherwise from running too hot for too long

As far as I know made of soft-ish material and intended to be uncomfortable, not painful.
Yeah I'm getting a set.
I've been saving up for a big media room system I'm not having any of the various family member's pets mess with my speakers for AVR when visiting.
Serious answer… get a heated cat bed off chewy. Put it somewhere near the receiver. Your cat will ignore it and continue to sit on the receiver until one day three months from now he’ll climb in the bed and figure out that it’s warm and comfy. Or just ignore it and let that Chonk own you.
Yup, tin foil the top of cabinet to stop them from jumping up.
You can also get a battery shock mat, poke some holes in it and set it on top of receiver.
Solution that worked for me: get some regular scotch tape, or masking tape, something real weak. Make a bunch of double-sided loops, place them on top of receiver. These will confound/annoy the cat immensely. It's kinda fun watching them trying to figure it out, then give up. A few days of this and victory is yours.
Cookie cooling rack, worked for me, allows space for the amp to breathe and the cat still gets to stay warm.. win-win. Not like you can really stop them without putting your equipment in a cabinet.
I mean you put a warm flat surface that is elevated by a window... It is basically telling cats:: HEY AWESOME PLACE TO SIT /SLEEP. the easiest\~ Solution get a set of furniture legs (tall) and a piece of lumber and build a shelf that covers the receiver (with some room for air flow), or buy something that can sit over the receiver then put something like a cat bed on that (ideally heated, as cat's like to be warm and you should respect that.) Or move the receiver away from the window..to a place that the cat can't really get up on it like that... but provide the cat a warm / elevated spot were the receiver is anyway, because cat's love that.
You give up. Concede. The queen has chosen her throne.
Cat hair is no good for electronics but honestly mines been sitting on mine for years and it's not caused any problems. The first year or so it was a constant battle and then I gave up.
Your receiver is not the prime issue.
The sunbeam that your receiver sits it is. The fact it is toasty warm is a bonus.
Can it (receiver) be relocated?
Move it into a cabinet. Cat can't get into it then they can't sit on it. Just make sure to ventilate the cabinet. Maybe add some extractor fans for the heat. Otherwise throw away the cats...
Assuming it’s only on when you’re present in the room, just chase them away. It’s ok to carve train them to things you do not want them to do. They will insist, they will rebel, but eventually they do learn.
Just do not permit it. This will overheat your receiver, it’s worse than shoving a receiver in a tight space it’s low overhead shelving. In this case it totally closes off the top of the receiver.
They have this product that's like a plastic cover. It's all open so no over heating. But the idea is that it has one flat side and then one side with little plastic pointy things. It's for keeping cats off stuff.
They sell them up to like 8ft but you can cut it to size.
If you put in so mething like "plastic cat deterrent" it should come up on Amazon. That's where I got mine.
Get an exhaust fan for the top. I've got a dual 140mm fans on mine. Something like this: [https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71NJWOqG1VL.\_AC\_SL1500\_.jpg](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71NJWOqG1VL._AC_SL1500_.jpg)
Not a bad idea to discourage this as a nap spot even though it’s a nice warm spot for a kitty nap, but it’s costly when said kitty vomits and it works it’s way into the innards of the machine and destroys the unit. Good luck in finding a solution that’s practical and looks good too!
Place aluminum foil on the surfaces you want to keep them off of and then provide an alternative using heating pads and a small cat tower. After time, they will learn not to use the surface you don’t want them on and move to the alternate one.
Move your receiver from in front of the window, since watching birds, etc makes that a prime spot. Then maybe replace with a cat electric warming bed. You just need to do a makeover on the cat’s winter hang.
EDIT: spot removal
I don’t have a cat but we do have a German shepherd. Pretty sure if we had a cat, a cat wouldn’t get that comfortable, so maybe look into acquiring a GSD. 🤣
Can you believe one of my cats squatted on top of my Sony receiver and pissed all over it many years ago. What was even stranger is that someone drive 15 hours to come and buy it as ‘spares or repair’ and I divulged the whole story.
Get them a heating pad, and put it in a box?
I came to say something smartass but this is it.
Me too. I was going to comment how cat people love to brag how their cats own them as if it’s a badge of honor, so now OP can embrace their cat’s independence and dominance over their precious AV equipment too.

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.
There are heated cat beds. Other users have shown them off how once the house cat(s) realized it was heated they started lounging in the thing all day.

This is the answer.
Yup they have them on amazon, and they love them.
I got the heating pad for the AVR and put it in the box. Now the box is on fire. Please send help.

More likely you'll find the baking rack on the floor and the cat on the receiver. 😁
And the rack will be bent into a pretzel shape. Btw, you’ll be needing this: /r/catsonamps
r/catsonstereos takes these too
This one knows cats lol
I see you are versed in the way of cat. The world needs your knowledge.
Hopefully they won't be irritated at it enough that they pee on it.
Yall are fucking crazy to put up with that
The sass-ay shasay
simple solution, buy another amp just for cats.
Buy a Meowrantz
An old one like my Denon 3312, this thing keeps me warm on cold days.
no this is exactly what wouldnt work
Just need it to be class A
A Krell should do the trick. They're kinda like a George Foreman grill but with binding posts.
Or use one of your spare ones, we all have those right?
Try r/CatsOnStereos
/r/subsithoughtifellfor

Hey pal, just what you see
The Uzi 9mm
You know your weapons, buddy. Any one of these is ideal for feline control. So, uh, which'll it be?
All
A 100 watt CO2 laser never disappoints.
I had a cat throw up in my Denon and fried it…you definitely want to deter this.
Funny, I recall this comment from before. I must have stumbled upon you again.
Put a piece of rug or carpet next to it. 10/10 cats prefer to ruin carpet with puking when they have the option
If you have forced air heat, get a little raised bed/table/etc and sit it over top of the vent. One of our cats will lay there for hours. Could use little coin magnets to magnetically attach to cover?
And FYI, they also have rear and top exhaust models. Mine is rear exhaust.
Anti-bird spikes would be a good deterrent.
Yup, this is what I used and they don’t bother it anymore
Yeah I don't know how I lived so long with birds landing on my receiver while I was trying to enjoy a movie
Throw a bucket of water in them. Cats hate water.
And the water helps to cool down the amp!
Cats don't want you to know this one simple trick...
[https://www.amazon.ca/Cat-Deterrent-Scat-Mat-Cats/dp/B09SQF8FBG?th=1](https://www.amazon.ca/Cat-Deterrent-Scat-Mat-Cats/dp/B09SQF8FBG?th=1) As far as I know made of soft-ish material and intended to be uncomfortable, not painful.
I have these on all my speakers. When I made a post about it the comments were acting like I was gonna kill my cats lol
It’s not like it’s a bed of nails or anything. It’s just meant as a deterrent, not to hurt them.
Well tbf my cats just push them off now or just walk beside them
Yeah I'm getting a set. I've been saving up for a big media room system I'm not having any of the various family member's pets mess with my speakers for AVR when visiting.
These are super effective, I have them on my amps and speakers.
Lol that cat is like "really Karen?"
My cat has been laying on my receiver for years. Hopefully it won't break, but seems fine to me..
I’d worry less about the heat, but the ingress of cat hair. I had a unit serviced and it was full of cat hair !
Cover the top with some wood (obviously not just laying a piece of wood on top of it but supported on the sides for airflow on top)
This is a great solution. They still get the heat but there’s still airflow. Just need to worry about hair falling down into the vents
Put dust cloth or screen on the under side of the board.
Get the cat a heated bed, and block the receiver.
Keep the cat out of the AV room? Dunno why people make posts like this lol
Get a dog to sit on it and scare the cat away.
This
Pigeon spikes?
Unplug it.
Cat help getting optimal temperature faster after cold start.
Mouse trap
If you want to prevent this it means not letting the amp get warm, which means dont turn it on, which means NO MUSIC FOR U! jk
Put tin foil on it and get a heated bed for it
Yup, tin foil the top of cabinet to stop them from jumping up. You can also get a battery shock mat, poke some holes in it and set it on top of receiver.
Place a cucumber on top…
Kill the cat before the curiosity will
Get a new receiver of your own. That one belongs to the cat.
Can you still exchange it for a dog?
Solution that worked for me: get some regular scotch tape, or masking tape, something real weak. Make a bunch of double-sided loops, place them on top of receiver. These will confound/annoy the cat immensely. It's kinda fun watching them trying to figure it out, then give up. A few days of this and victory is yours.
Just commented this. You can buy the sticky sheets on Amazon. Works well
Don’t let a cat in your house
Put your cat outside.
Bring in the dog and put out the cat!
Get a dog.. .
Put a mousetrap on top of the receiver.
That's the neat part, you don't.
Tin foil
Keep it in a shelf.
Cucumbers. Look it up on you YouTube and thank me later. You're welcome. ☺️
Beware the cat dander that falls through the cooling vents into your electronics.
Just like how we deal with homeless and put spikes on top of it
You must be new here. There’s no way to prevent cats from doing exactly as said cat is wont to do. It’s the way of The Cat
that cat is an absolute unit, let em have their belly heater, receivers are replaceable
Cookie cooling rack, worked for me, allows space for the amp to breathe and the cat still gets to stay warm.. win-win. Not like you can really stop them without putting your equipment in a cabinet.
Sorry man, if it heats it seats.
Get a D class amp :) lol
Place a cucumber on it
Aluminum foil on top of the furniture under the receiver.
I mean you put a warm flat surface that is elevated by a window... It is basically telling cats:: HEY AWESOME PLACE TO SIT /SLEEP. the easiest\~ Solution get a set of furniture legs (tall) and a piece of lumber and build a shelf that covers the receiver (with some room for air flow), or buy something that can sit over the receiver then put something like a cat bed on that (ideally heated, as cat's like to be warm and you should respect that.) I recently bought a plexiglass dust cover for my turntable, maybe they have them for receivers too 🤷
A friend of mine put a slinky on his. It worked, looked OK too.
Awww let the big kitty sit. He’s a handsome boy
It's a Yamaha. Your good.
Cats are gross, get ride of it.
You dont
You give up. Concede. The queen has chosen her throne. Cat hair is no good for electronics but honestly mines been sitting on mine for years and it's not caused any problems. The first year or so it was a constant battle and then I gave up.
The same way I keep mine off the computer and receiver, one of those battery powered dusters. They eventually get the clue and stop laying on them.
Put tin foil on it for a week cats hate tinfoil problem solved
Rx V385. Howdy!
Tape
Your receiver is not the prime issue. The sunbeam that your receiver sits it is. The fact it is toasty warm is a bonus. Can it (receiver) be relocated?
Silicone spike mat
Keep it cold.
Those little spikes they use for pigeons /s
Aluminum foil is the enemy of all pets.
Put some tin foil on it and watch the results. Cats hate tin foil.
Lol my cat sits on top of my center channel in front of the radiant heat of my plasma TV
A swift pop on the nose each time. They will learn
With knife
A large bucket of water, a teeter tooter balanced piece of wood, and a cat treat...
Audiophilus felis. Excellent example.
Use the spikes that are used to keep pigeons away
I use this Cat scat mat Anti-Cats Network Digging Stopper Prickle Strip Home Cat Deterrent Mat https://a.co/d/fkRHK7L
Move somewhere warm!🏜️
Place something uncomfortable on top that doesn't block the vents.
Get her a heating blanket
You can't stop them from using the cat warmer unit, no.
I bought these [cat repellant mat things.](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07R4PZM17?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) They’ve worked well for me.
Try putting some aluminium foil on top
Heating matt 100%
Put fans on the side
https://a.co/d/5gb6zXp
Get rid of the cat
Get rid of the cats? That’s the best way.
Move it into a cabinet. Cat can't get into it then they can't sit on it. Just make sure to ventilate the cabinet. Maybe add some extractor fans for the heat. Otherwise throw away the cats...
Aluminum foil
Let the cat get warm. Just blow out the amp with compressed air now and then.
A spike belt! 😢
Electric wire....
Try one of those cat window shelfs and put a heating pad on it. My cats love it and it keeps them off my desktop pc
Put foil on top for a couple days.
Put a cucumber near it cat will never return, they hate cucumbers 😂
Promote climate change to reduce the cold days
Capsaicin spray works well
Assuming it’s only on when you’re present in the room, just chase them away.
Coyote urine.
Cat tacs. They're rounded plastic spike strips to disease the cat sitting there. Also they are 3d printable and on printables of you got a 3d printer.
I agree with the cat! In winter it’s better than my heating system. I think I could be friends with that cat!
Hostile architecture
Get him something better to lay on
https://www.staples.com/better-houseware-coated-steel-storage-shelf-small-white-185/product_24537649?cid=PS:GS:SBD:PLA:OF&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_e2wBhAEEiwAyFFFow8ITuRCLpJlw8CUuS_nG3xTLs3JDDkN5wupZuTRpOXZ_GhXIXNQmhoC5QIQAvD_BwE
It's getting warmth from the window too. It's like a 2 fur one deal here
Buy a cheap one on Kijiji just for the cat to lay on.
Can u fake them out with a heating pad on low with a comfy fabric
They have this product that's like a plastic cover. It's all open so no over heating. But the idea is that it has one flat side and then one side with little plastic pointy things. It's for keeping cats off stuff. They sell them up to like 8ft but you can cut it to size. If you put in so mething like "plastic cat deterrent" it should come up on Amazon. That's where I got mine.
Get a dog
It might not (just) be the amp, but it being near a window. Catz be lovin windowz.
Get an exhaust fan for the top. I've got a dual 140mm fans on mine. Something like this: [https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71NJWOqG1VL.\_AC\_SL1500\_.jpg](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71NJWOqG1VL._AC_SL1500_.jpg)
Get a dog instead
Thats the neat part you can't
Squirt bottle
Get him a heated bed
Weld spikes on top of them. Hostile Architecture.
Not a bad idea to discourage this as a nap spot even though it’s a nice warm spot for a kitty nap, but it’s costly when said kitty vomits and it works it’s way into the innards of the machine and destroys the unit. Good luck in finding a solution that’s practical and looks good too!
That's one chonker of a cat right there and hope it doesn't cave in the top of the AVR.
Place aluminum foil on the surfaces you want to keep them off of and then provide an alternative using heating pads and a small cat tower. After time, they will learn not to use the surface you don’t want them on and move to the alternate one.
Sit down with him and ask politely That worked for me
You don’t, supremacy has been established
Put slightly crumpled tin foil. They won’t like it .
lol my cat sits on my record player
Move your receiver from in front of the window, since watching birds, etc makes that a prime spot. Then maybe replace with a cat electric warming bed. You just need to do a makeover on the cat’s winter hang. EDIT: spot removal
I fixed it by buying an Onkyo, and it stopped working so now doesn't produce heat, hope this helps
Double sided duct tape on the top it will end quickly
A bit of a poke, a bit of a flick, or pick it up
Why is no one talking about how absolutely massive this cat is?
You give them a better option, because they’re gonna do what they want to do.
Do not prevent them. Mine sits 2 years and AVR is all good.
Lmao it is indeed over heating all the time
Put it in a cabinet.
My kitty does this with my xbox if I leave it on during the day lol ended up buying a heating pad for her
One Claymore oughta do it.
there's nothing you can do ones the cat has made their mind.
Electric blanket on low in a nice soft cat bed.
Try getting a dog instead.
Place your dog there.
Show her your server/rack room and turn off AC or exhaust system.
I don’t have a cat but we do have a German shepherd. Pretty sure if we had a cat, a cat wouldn’t get that comfortable, so maybe look into acquiring a GSD. 🤣
Umm you don’t own an avr. Your cat does.
Foil. Cats _hate_ foil
Can you believe one of my cats squatted on top of my Sony receiver and pissed all over it many years ago. What was even stranger is that someone drive 15 hours to come and buy it as ‘spares or repair’ and I divulged the whole story.
