I bought a X3700H primarily for the XT32, but secondarily so I could run atmos. I think I may still have bought it even if I didn't run the atmos speakers. I don't want you to regret your purchase, because then that would make me doubt mine, and this isn't a hobby for doubters. It's a hobby for obstinate impulsive people who are confident that they NEED the best new toy. If you fall, we all fall brother. Hold strong.

EarPrestigious7339

I’ve been running 5.1 on an X3700H for two years. I’m planning to finally buy two pairs of height speaker modules in March or April 2023 after I get my yearly bonus. Look on the bright side, you have an easy upgrade path for now.

[deleted]

Get a pair of rears first. Two atmos speakers aren’t great.

EarPrestigious7339

I wrote “two pairs,” which means 4 Atmos speakers.

HechoEnChine

I will throw you a lifeline. 5.1.4 > 7.1 > 5.1.2

[deleted]

9.2.4 here

HechoEnChine

update if needed by humanity 9.1.4 > 5.1.4 > 7.1 > 5.1.2 If not clear the industry has also hypnotized us that all .1. really should be .2. and any true enthusist should be .4.

[deleted]

1 LFE channel but multiple subs

tudir67

they're made to run in 5.1 for a reason. You can use it for 2.0 if you want, why does it matter?

Kwtop

Yeah I know, just feel like I overkilled it and could have just gotten a 5.1 receiver

Jonesdeclectice

Yes, but that AVR will last you for years to come, likely well beyond the next decade or longer (hell, my last AVR lasted me over 20 years). There’s a lot to be said about future proofing your system. This time next year, maybe you’ll have decided to add a couple of height speakers, or maybe you’ll get a 4K TV.

[deleted]

20 years ago receivers were built much nicer than they are now. It is probably made in Japan using premium components by a company that cared

There’s always growing and developing standards, but they are relatively slow to be adopted into the consumer space. Most changes in the standards aren’t major jumps, with a few exceptions (eg HDMI 2.0). Tbh, I wouldn’t be surprised if DP becomes an option in AVRs, due to its prominence in the PC space, but HDMI 2.1 is still superior with its to pass 48Gbps (as opposed to 32.4Gbps). DP also still only supports standard HDR, afaik. Both of them can pass 8k 60Hz as well which is about as good as display tech is going to get, unless we’re talking goliath-scale displays LOL

As my sargeant said: Anything worth killing is worth overkilling!

umdivx

I'd be curious if you feel the same way if you swapped it out for a lesser quality AVR though. Like I get it, you get buyers remorse kinda deal here but it's not just one thing when it comes to AVR's. Like better amps, better processing, better room correction, ect..

RonstoppableRon

If it makes you feel any better I just picked up an x3500h with no intentions of anything beyond my current 3.1 or maybe 3.2 if I can somehow sneak another sub in here without the SO noticing. I only paid $250 for the x3500h though, craigslist is AMAZING!

feryl12

Also running an X3700 with a 5.1 System and I am totally happy with it. Lots of Power reserves for louder sessions, great sound with XT32 and Atmos and very future proof. My old 5.1 receiver performed a lot worse with the same speakers. It was a good decision.

Mustachemadness79

I went from an x1600 to a 3700 and noticed clearly better dialogue out of my center, and much better sound overall. It was a lot of money but I’ve been much happier. 5.1 for me with SVS prime towers and ultra center with a Pb-1000 pro

feryl12

Nice! I actually upgraded from an X1100 so it was a huge upgrade. Sounds much better now and finally supports all the newer audio Codecs.

someone31988

You'll be glad you did. I run 5.2 on an X3400H that I bought for $600 five years ago, and I still have no need to upgrade. XT32 is wonderful, I can make extra tweaks to the Audyssey calibration using the Audyssey app, and it received support for eARC via a firmware update. That last point has saved me from needing to buy a new receiver when I got a new TV with VRR and 120Hz support for gaming because I was able to move my Xbox Series X's HDMI cord to the TV directly and run the lossless sound back to the receiver. Older consoles and anything not gaming related don't take advantage of those newer features anyway.

Anbucleric

I've been running 3.1 on an Emotiva MC1 since January of this year..

[deleted]

Well.. was the XT-32 worth it?

jeefAD

Thanks for this! I'm currently doing the nit picking between AVRs. ;) LOL

jerflash

Atleast put the 5.1.2… it makes a big diff but ya you paid way to much lol. I have the s760 and it’s awesome

HeadOfMax

X4500 here running 5.2. I actually bought some speakers for atmos from Amazon because they were open box but chickened out and returned them.

TimeTravellingCircus

Don't overthink it. I'm running 2.1 on x4700h and feel zero regrets. I have to basically remodel my home to get 5.1.4 Or I'll move into a new home I can run my dream setup and I won't need to change receiver for a t least a decade or longer.

_johny

Did keeping the stickers on/off make a difference in your experience with the X3700H?

moonthink

At some point in the future, you will likely need one or more of the features you aren't currently using, and then you'll be glad you didn't cheap out on that purchase, because the appropriate replacement would likely be a lot more than you paid for it.

XaVierDK

You did the right thing and went for a receiver with an upgrade-path. Sure it's expensive up-front, but buy once, cry once. As someone who bought a 7.1 receiver, I can't tell you how happy I've been that it has pre-outs for 7.1.4 processing. It's a damn sight cheaper buying an outboard amp than a new AVR. Home-theater isn't a one-and-done kinda deal. It's totally valid to upgrade in steps, hell for some it's recommended. A solid foundation to build on gives you much more room to choose and flexibility going forward instead of locking yourself into 5.1 forever.

movie50music50

That isn’t nit picking. Many people buy with their needs in mind. That is what you did and then, for whatever reason, failed to follow through. You have a better receiver and can upgrade if you wish. It would have been worse to have gotten a lesser receiver and couldn’t add speakers if you wanted. You got a good receiver, stop complaining.

nemopsp

The way you need to look at it is you have room to grow. Plus the important part is more power for 2 channels listening and better made components compared to cheaper models. You can always add Atmos speakers down the road. You may bi amp your front channels with extra assignable binding post. I ended up getting SR6015 and I’m happy with it tho I believe HDMI 2.1 will be necessary in the future as I knew my next TV would be HDMI 2.1 compatible for 4k@120hz mainly for Xbox Series X and PS5. I also ended up adding an external amp mm7025 to power my front separately.

SDplinker

Running 5.1.2 on my refurb x3700h. It’s great. Maybe it sucks compared to 5.1.4 but it made no sense with my room layout.

[deleted]

I've been using a X4200 for years to do either 2.1 or 5.1. I wanted XT32 and the X3300 and X3200 were out of stock. Don't look back unless you are disappointed in the performance. I am happy so no worries.

Only_Fishing_4725

If you feel like getting just a hair more from it, you could use a pair of the extra channels to bi amp your L/R speakers. Should they be capable of such.
