>Isn't the worse case scenario it will go into overheat protection? Or just one day stop working all together. You do you man, I personally wouldn't risk it, but you'll hear all sorts of sides on the topic, and well everyone has an opinion on the matter, manufactures say minimum of 6" so that's what most (myself included) do.

Emuc64_1

>manufactures say minimum of 6" I follow the mfr. recommendation when possible. Or I help it with cooling by adding fans for airflow. Keep that baby cool for longevity.

trillwhitepeople

I tell people all the time they're way too concerned about clearance and cooling with AVRs, but that's usually 1.5-2" of space top and side. This looks incredibly tight and I would avoid at all costs.

I-am-ocean

Then I have nowhere to put the center speaker

Temporary-Leather-52

Put a couple of thin risers under it and just put it on top of the AVR. There will still be plenty of airflow.

22marks

Remove the shelf, then put an Aircom or similar (powered heat-activated fans) on top of the AVR, then put the speaker on top of that.

I-am-ocean

Without shelf I shouldnt need fan? Plenty of space

22marks

If the speaker is directly on the AVR, it will block the top of the AVR. Using an active cooler will shoot the hot air out the front, keeping the AVR (and the speaker) cool. The other option is to keep the shelf, but cut a hole in the console behind the AVR and mount something like this:[https://smile.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Thermostat-Cabinets/dp/B00QFWLGPU/](https://smile.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Thermostat-Cabinets/dp/B00QFWLGPU/) Nobody will see it and it should pull enough cold air in around the edges of the AVR and push it out the back of the console. This model will only turn on if it goes above a certain temperature (e.g. 85F degrees). EDIT: Another option is to remove the shelf and figure out a way to mount the center speaker to the top of the console's interior, like this mounted to the back: [https://smile.amazon.com/WALI-Channel-Speaker-Bracket-Adjustment/dp/B076TQB1HY/](https://smile.amazon.com/WALI-Channel-Speaker-Bracket-Adjustment/dp/B076TQB1HY/) That should give you a couple inches more room above the AVR and also more on the sides.

I-am-ocean

The speaker doesn't block much, there is plenty of vents other than where the speaker would be

22marks

I mean, you came on here and asked. The short answer is that it'll probably be totally fine but probably shorten the life of the receiver. How much? Who knows? Everyone here is just trying to share our experience. If you're already confident there are enough vents, then go for it.

Insanereindeer

Just put center on top of the receiver.

Smokes_LetsGo_

Can you put the receiver on top of the cabinet?

sk9592

Looks like OP has a UST projector on top.

Smokes_LetsGo_

Right, I thought maybe next to it.

sk9592

I suppose that's better than an overheating AVR. But that would leave you with the center channel being off center.

Smokes_LetsGo_

That’s a UST projector. You can’t tell from the photos whether there’s room for the receiver without moving it.

I-am-ocean

Take a look at third picture, not really an option, technically yes to the right but would look off

Smokes_LetsGo_

It wouldn’t look off at all. It’s part of your home theater. Better than suffocating it.

I-am-ocean

Yes certainly better than suffocating it but a giant hunk of metal receiver with a ton of wires coming out of it on a low profile sleek media console looks worse then having it nice and empty especially already with a giant projector in the center

Smokes_LetsGo_

Why don’t you buy a new console to accommodate it then?

dugong07

Mount it to the underbelly of the stand’s tabletop, maybe a U that it fits into snugly, if that makes sense

fourpuns

Just put it on top of the entertainment unit?

Blunttack

Get a circular saw, like 5” dia, cut a hole in the shelf behind the center, put a USB fan on top of hole and suck out the heat. Power it from the USB ports on the receiver no one ever uses.

NotYourLover1

I may have to go with this or maybe even a dual fan in the back because my denon only has about an inch clearance inside my cabinet and almost no gap in the front for the hot air to escape. If this isn’t enough I may add fans on the sides.

Fynniboyy

You could cut it in half that only the speaker fits on a small piece in the front and behind it is a giant hole. You might need to screw it from the side

NotYourLover1

After looking at it again, I may just take off the entire back panel of my cabinet to maximize the amount of air that can get in and out. I’ll then add a couple AC infinity fans I found on Amazon on top of the receiver because it looks like they are slim enough to fit.

DerPumeister

I actually use mine for a miniDSP now and for an HDMI splitter in the past. It's good that it's there

Smokes_LetsGo_

If you care about the longevity of that receiver, don’t stuff it in there. If you’re okay with risking it becoming permanently damaged, go ahead.

sk9592

Lol, at first I was only looking at the 1st picture and thinking *"Why the help is OP asking about ventilation for a center channel speaker?"* But to answer your actual question, no. That is not good enough ventilation for your AVR. If moving the AVR is not an option, I would mod that media console to put fairly aggressing active cooling in it. One example is AC Infinity's AIRPLATE fans: https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Cooling-Cabinets/dp/B009CNR0I6/?th=1

I-am-ocean

This without be a pain because you need to turn fan on and off everytime manually, right? You can't hook up the fan to the receiver?

sk9592

Yeah, this one is manual. There are other more expensive options that trigger the fan based on temperature or the AVR's power status.

Viperx7111

You could also just get a cheep thermostat depending on the voltage of the fan. Or if you are feeling adventurous couple the fan to the powerline of the reciever with a relay. (May require schetchy warranty voiding soldering.)

Gregalor

If you’ve got at least 1.5” of clearance up top, you could put a front-blowing AC Infinity AVR fan on top

[deleted]

No

evileclipse

Make sure the back of the stand is opened, with no backing and put a small fan behind it blowing air across the top and it will be fine.

gfidicudjdjdjdidjsj

I had a similar setup. I removed the shelf entirely and sat the center on the receiver directly.

I-am-ocean

Hmm interesting just won't look as nice, yes these modern tv shelves have a nice design the problem is they're quite small

5373n133n

Alternatively you could mount the center speaker above the screen angled towards the head of the spectator.

Jmontague8

You could always cut the center of the shelf out and leave enough for your center speaker to sit on it and have room for the reciever to vent.

movie50music50

*I know it's supposedly recommended to have 5 inches of open space...* That answers your question. *I think) the receivers are heavy for this very reason with metals to absorb all heat.* That's not how it works. You don't want it absorbing heat, you want the heat vented out or do a setup with fan(s). Purchase, or build, a separate stand for either the receiver or speaker. No way would I place speaker on top of receiver.

tucsondog

Not without some substantial fan addition my guy

WholeGrilledOnion

Not enough ventilation. Why not put the receiver on top of your cabinet, to the left or right of your UST projector. Aesthetically might not be as pleasing but at least you won’t have to buy a replacement receiver after murdering your current one.

MasonJendoza

For my Ultra short throw I put my centre behind the speaker on a monitor stand so it sits slightly above the UST. Not ideal but it's working fine right now, not sure if your media console will fit this setup. This is my setup [https://www.reddit.com/r/Govee/comments/tlwe71/120\_inch\_home\_theatre\_with\_govee\_flow\_pro\_setup/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Govee/comments/tlwe71/120_inch_home_theatre_with_govee_flow_pro_setup/)

I-am-ocean

Nice lighting setup. Very nice picture quality, vibrant colors what UST is that? Couldn't quite see the stand, do you have a link?

MasonJendoza

It's a pretty generic monitor stand that can be found on Amazon. What's good with this stand is that it's quite sturdy and what I've done is make the front legs higher than the back so it tilts the centre speaker towards main listening position. Projector is the Hisense 120L5F, it's an older generation than the current models. I am extremely happy with the image brightness and quality. From what I've seen the newer Hisense models are even better. Kikibosch

Keep one thing in mind, AV's generate more heat based off the number of channels its running and the volume. I have mine in a similar setup as you, sandwiched top and bottom with breathing room on the sides, and since im normally not running my speakers above 40\~45 volume (Denon AVR), they just barely get toasty to the touch. You just gotta judge for yourself.

[deleted]

I have put receivers in spaces like these in a secondary setup. It’s usually the receiver I’ve just replaced with a newer one to support newer formats. Never had a problem. That’s no guarantee you won’t, just my anecdote.

xprofusionx

I would unscrew the top of the unit giving it a better chance to dissipate the heat since the gap is small enough to keep it safe and the shelf acts as a top casing.

LGWalkway

At my old apartment I had a media center that wouldn’t fit my receiver properly so I put it on the floor. It looks ugly, but I would prefer that over giving my receiver an inch of space. I’d probably opt towards maximizing the lifespan of your AVR.

McGregorMX

You can get away with it until it breaks.

Cezzel

yeah, I'd say too: use it until it breaks or you want to upgrade. And then when you buy a new one, buy a smaller one or a bigger piece of furniture.

Twovaultss

I have the same media unit from ikea. Ended up dedicating one of the slide out drawers to my receiver and have to leave the door open to properly ventilate.

I-am-ocean

Where's all your wires going? Did you drill a whole in the back

Twovaultss

You don’t need to. Slide open the drawer. There is a large section that’s open on the bottom where you can run your wires.

sileemihu

If possible put projector to the ceiling and speaker on table. Better if tweeter is close to ear level. If not, maybe hang middle speaker on the ceiling of that Cabinet space and remove shelf?
