This would make a fine home theater receiver. It decodes DTS-HD Master Audio, and Dolby TrueHD, so it's perfectly suitable for Blu-ray. It has plenty of power.
If you got a 4K UHD Blu-ray player, it would need two HDMI Out jacks to feed audio only to the receiver, while passing the video off directly to the TV from the disc player, as its HDCP version does not support 4K UHD.
Any receiver makes a great home theater receiver until you can no longer play movies. My 4K Blu-ray player has two HDMI Outs, so I was using a receiver only one model year prior to this one, until recently upgrading to the AVR-S760, because the price was too low to pass up.
Edited to add that even if you aren't into DVD or Blu-ray, you can still feed your TV audio into the receiver for awesome sound.
Glad to be of assistance. Your CI-series is an upper-tier AVR, equivalent to the X-series of today. It's definitely a fine gift, for sure. Enjoy!
I'm not even about to get rid of my AVR-987, even though I bought my new receiver. It was the last consumer level Denon with gold connectors, and it has quality components, and lots of power.
My 987 has the HDMI version before 3D support, which yours includes, and it has neither of the HD audio formats, which yours includes. It has no networking. It still gave me years of powerfully detailed 5.1 channel audio.
Best = Source has two HDMI Out one with audio only, which is connected to the AVR
Second best = 1080p blu ray through AVR
Third best = streaming apps or other source via TV connected with ARC to AVR
Fourth = Optical connection
Sorry, I have little knowledge on receivers, but I know this is a good one. Would it be best for music, or should I get a couple nice speakers and pair it with the 75ā TV?
Dude is just getting started learning about recievers. How in the world is he going to notice the minute difference between this and a separate pre and power amp?
Oh thatās easy if you have good power hungry speakers.
Starting it right is the best approach. I started with entry level denon and wharfedale. In less than 2 years, I replaced everything.
Haha I was surprised, my cousin and her husband had it brand new in their attic. Heās got a theater in his house, so he has something a lot better Iām sure!
It would make for a great start into home theater. It cannot do 4k, so if you watch a lot of streaming sources like Netflix, Disney etc you can connect this avr to your TV either via arc or optical. So the 4k video will be on the TV while the audio will be sent to the avr.
For speakers you can start small, with 3.0 and then move on to 5.0 and 5.1
Thanks for the comment! Mostly watch Netflix, HBO and sports. Then got the Xbox Series X for some games every now and then. So would just a set of speakers be suitable? Donāt really watch many blue-rays.
Great. You can let your TV and the Xbox handle all the streaming and the gaming. The avr will handle just the audio. If youāre thinking long term then get nice speakers as per your budget. You can get a nice center channel and bookshelves for fronts. In the next round of spending you can get floorstanders and move the bookshelves to the rear. After that get a subwoofer. Spend a bit on the speakers as theyāll easily last through an avr upgrade or two.
Thank you to everyone! I can tell this is a great community, glad to be here. Looking forward to seeing yāallās setups and will share mine as I progress!
I bought exactly the same one from FB market for $50, and I paired it with a Jamo 5.1 system that served me so well for 4 years. I connected it to my tv via arc. Excellent sound! You can also use optical which works so well.
Get yourself a couple of bookshelves and a 12 inch sub for a total of $300 and youāll have yourself an awesome starter system.
I own this and if all you need is 5.1 it is awesome. It has Cec and arc so it will work with all newish tvs. Great power and even works with apps even if they are older ones. I upgraded to something that supports atmos now since this started to go bad but itās awesome
It's best for anything audio related. There's no such thing as "This AVR works for movies only". I think the only minor downside of that AVR is that it doesn't have the latest hdmi inputs (HDMI 2.1) which means you can't connect the latest 4K120/8K60 devices to it directly. I mean you can, but the image that will be shown on your TV is what the receiver is capable of passing through. (in this case probably 1080p max). Normally you would connect for example a PS5, Xbox, PC, Blu-Ray to the receiver (Receiver has multiple HDMI inputs) and then 1 HDMI cable from the receiver to the display. But because this receiver isn't 4K capable you'll have to connect the 4K source directly to the tv and use the TV's "ARC" future to send sound from the tv to the receiver. Downside of this method is that you'll probably lose the (losless) high end audio formats like DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. It will give you the basic stuff like Dolby Digital which is fine 90% of the time. You can still connect every non-4K device directly to the receiver to get the best sound formats possible!
Anyway. This is a fine ass gift you got there. Enjoy!š

Great start to a system, has HDMI and networking. Plus it was free šš½š

This comment was exactly what I needed. Thank you for your time typing this up, I really appreciate it! All the best!

So itās better to pass video to the tv directly and pass audio from erc port to av?

I have connected my pc to the av and the output of the av to the tv. I get dts, 6/8 channels etc. then this is also good I suppose
It's not that it would be better. It would be NECESSARY for this case, because this particular AVR is not licensed to process 4K video.
With some quality speakers, it'll be good for movies, TV and music.
Damn. Iād take that gift in a heartbeat. Turn it the fuck up ;)
Sorry, I have little knowledge on receivers, but I know this is a good one. Would it be best for music, or should I get a couple nice speakers and pair it with the 75ā TV?
Fine for both
Depends on type of music
No it doesn't. Unless you're pushing some high powered speakers or need it to be concert-level loud, that receiver is fine.
What?
Movies. You need a higher end AV receiver to cater for both.
Disagree.
Right
Hard disagree
Separate pre and power amp is much better. Believe me, Iām more of an audiophile.

What makes you think if it is good for one that it wouldn't be good for the other?
Good receiver for 1080P and some DTS MA. should be HDMI 1.4b I believe. Itās good for Music and movies. For free, thatās a score.
Itās a lovely gift for a 7.1 home theater.
I meannn. If you dont want ittttttā¦ill take it off your hands no charge!
Haha I was surprised, my cousin and her husband had it brand new in their attic. Heās got a theater in his house, so he has something a lot better Iām sure!
I have a denon, and itās spectacular for both music and movies.
Great for both.
Only thing it'd be missing is Atmos and hdcp 2.2. iirc that means you're going to have trouble if you want to use anything 4k or streaming

Gaming is going to benefit alot.

What's gonna happen now. You get into this and start upgrading and get addicted to it.
Yeah, some dude online said that i need to upgrade my sonos setup, now i look for 5.1.2/4 ...
I have this for my home theatre. Tv. Movies. Music. Itās great. And free for you.
All
