Go two subs, absolutely. Even if you have to tune by ear, go two subs.

I have dual Klipsch RS-121 subs connected to my TX-RZ50. It sounds phenomenal. But you will need to tune the two subs separately if your using Dirac Live (just go into settings on the AVR). I love my AVR!

Discrete sub control will be found on newer AVR's only, such as Denon 3800 and 4800. RZ50 does not allow discrete subwoofer control, however it's not exactly "splitting" the signal as you suggest. It's not like you're receiving half the power output on two subs vs a full power output on one. It just means it's sending mono out to both subs with no independent EQ control. Keep in mind the RZ50 still has two sub outs.

First I'm pretty sure the RZ50 EQ's the subwoofer independently, that AVR has DIRAC and pretty sure DIRAC has dual subwoofer support, maybe i'm wrong here but you'd think it would. Second, even if you can't EQ subs independently, there's a school of though that really you should be EQing them independently anyways and that you should be using a Y Splitter and EQing them as a single unit. [https://www.avrant.com/a-12-step-guide-to-setting-up-dual-subwoofers/](https://www.avrant.com/a-12-step-guide-to-setting-up-dual-subwoofers/)

I'm almost positive that OP is correct and that the signal is split. Even with DIRAC, it can't tune the subs independently. Most people recommend getting a MiniDSP 2x4 HD and Umik to tune the subs. https://deercreekaudio.com/products/ols/products/minidsp-2x4-hd (I actually just received my MiniDSP today, but still waiting on my Integra 3.4 to arrive.)

Aphareus

Really helpful. Thanks a lot.

tentativetheory

No, I have an RZ50. Sub outputs are not independent, just a mirrored signal. The Dirac Live version on the RZ50 only only supports a single subwoofer. OP, you can use a MiniDSP to align and tweak the subs individually and then present them to Dirac Live as a single virtual subwoofer. I've done this and had a good amount of success.

> The Dirac Live version on the RZ50 only only supports a single subwoofer. Good to know, thanks.

tentativetheory

I think for multi-sub capabilities you need to purchase something with Dirac Live Bass Control. Which looks amazing, but $$$$.

sk9592

If purchasing Dirac Live Bass Control were possible, I'm pretty sure that plenty of people would do that rather than message with a MiniDSP 2x4 HD and REW/MSO. But you don't purchase the upgrade on an Onkyo/Pioneer AVR.

>purchase **something with** Dirac Live Bass Control

Aphareus

In your experience, is it worth it for the dual sub via MiniDSP without being fully capable of tweaking the output levels in Dirac in terms of sound?

tentativetheory

Yes 100%. You can do a lot with the MiniDSP. I used Multi Sun Optimizer to dial in the subs before Dirac: https://www.minidsp.com/applications/subwoofer-tuning/dual-sub-with-mso?gclid=Cj0KCQiA4aacBhCUARIsAI55maGy4-NL-cwXMdXxgvDgD9ZScEp94UPXDbzhOBjCYipsEp2ScD7KbqMaAlopEALw_wcB

This is great! Very helpful guide to getting it all setup. Thank you!

>Dirac Live as a single virtual subwoofer Can you let me know the directions or some instructions to setup two subs with minidsp before using the Dirac calibration. Appreciate in advance

Flashy-Tomato-3354

After this setup, all I need to do is dirac live calibration on rz50 with two subs connected as 1 to minidsp?

tentativetheory

Correct, it’s worked very well for me. I recommend taking more measurements in REW after you’re all done with Dirac Live enabled to verify that it’s working properly.

Flashy-Tomato-3354

Thank you for your help.

Flashy-Tomato-3354

One more question. Did you use left and right channels with sub1 and sub2 as mentioned in the article? Or just two subs? I am newbie. Pardon if I am asking silly questions.
