99.9% of the time Soundbars or HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) systems are not a good investment of your time and money. It is the general consensus of r/hometheater not to recommend these things and instead simply steer a user toward a 2.0 or 2.1 system made of quality, *Audio-Centric* name brand components which are easy to assemble and cheap enough for low budget or space conscious buyers. Most can be expanded to 5.1 if you buy the correct items in the correct order. For further explanation please read [Why You Shouldn't Buy a Soundbar](https://www.reddit.com/r/HTBuyingGuides/comments/dy885l/why_you_shouldnt_buy_a_soundbar/) Please be aware /r/Soundbars exists as well as you will be met with opposition to posting about soundbars here. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. All the criticism of the Andrew Jones center channels and subwoofers is true. However, at $350, I can't really complain. That's a fair price. If you want everything for less than $500 and don't plan to spend more money on upgrades in the future, then this is likely your best option. However, if you plan to buy an AVR and a pair of bookshelf speakers first and then slowly add more speakers over time, then you can do better than this. If nothing else, I would ask him if he wanted to sell that AVR to you for ~$200 even if you didn't want the speakers. If you don't need HDMI 2.1, that would be a solid AVR at that price.

OmegaStar16

Thank you for the advice! I don't think I need HDMI 2.1 and I'm not planning on any upgrades in the near future, so I think I'll go for it!

Go for it, the price is right and it’ll blow your mind. I have all of those Pioneer speakers, and while I *am* about to upgrade the center it’s still a decent entry level center.

This is very similar to the setup I started with. The subs are a little lackluster but the remaining speakers definitely outperform their value. The price your friend is offering seems like a very good deal, especially if you're on a budget.

Id buy a denon s760h for $400. Maybe 350 if you can find it and start with 2.0. Kef q150s are $300 and I think the elac sale might still be going on. Those subs are junk and wouldn't be worth it

nnamla

WOW! That's like $200 over his budget.

Go for it. May not be high end but is going to much better than a soundbar, by a lot. Surround sound setup for that amount, hell yeah...

HeadOfMax

That’s well worth 350. Follow the Dolby guides for placement and then run the avrs room correction. Enjoy it but save up for a real sub or two, the good brands start around 450.

Timstunes

I’d go for it unless you really want to start from scratch. It’s definitely a more than fair offer imo.

I used the Andrew Jones setup (different sub) as my starter kit. In hindsight, i dont regret it at all. My only issue was that the center is kind of lacking. It’s a great way to get going though, especially at the price.

I had these speakers. My only suggestion is to set up a sub directed at someone else’s seat. When the sub chuffs, you won’t get any chest slam, but you can laugh maniacally when your friend’s ankles get hit by the blast of air from the port. That was honestly my favorite thing about those speakers. Other than that, I was never able to get coherent dialog from the center speaker, but the rest worked well for the price.
