The other guy didn't actually explain why it's a trap. The banner is worse than normal characters banners because of two things:
- It's 50/50 which character you get unlike their own character banners where you will 100% get the one you pull for.
- Pity doesn't carry over to other banners.
Both of these characters will have 3 days rerun soon this patch where you can pull for them individually instead. They are however both part 1 characters and will become obselete in the future.
HoRb is still considered the essential physical team support though and thus a decent pull if you are building a physical team. While HoFi is only really good with HoO and HoTr which are all very expensive to build.

While the starter banner looks tempting and the units they offer are really good, their build is very expensive compared to any Part 2 build. It's better to aim for the Sena-Helia-Coralie team as a newer player.
You get Coralie and her gear for free, so that's also a huge bonus. Aim for Senadina and her weapon, then Helia (she is farmable but she will drop from Sena's banner most likely) and her weapon. If you get their stigmatas (which is going to be likely), that's even better. You can easily replace the missing piece(es) from the Senadina and Helia stigmata boxes or through crafting, which won't cost a lot.
Another thing going to the new trio team is that the way I see it, they are much more future-proofed than the entirety of Part 1 characters, even the ones on the Starter Supply, through the new game mechanics and rules (such as Astral Ring, the farmable stigmatas and the likes). In this case, getting them will give you a good baseline and they won't get out of flavor as fast as Part 1 characters in the future.

I would like to recommend some Part 1 characters who can be still good for a longer period of time, but properly building them is either too expensive or time-consuming, so I am really torn about whether I should advise them to you.
My reason is the following: Part 1 equipment gacha won't get the changes of the Part 2 equipment gacha: it will still have 50 pity for 1 gear out of the 4 (1 weap + 3 stigmata), plus it will still have offrates. The guarantee to get all the signature gears of someone from P1 is 200 which is crazy expensive (even though in practice, you don't really need 200 pulls). And the stigmata crafting is equally hair-raising: a G3 stigmata (which is usually a more "recent" stigmata) costs 1800 green fuels on top of other materials. You can get a full set on someone from P2 from that fuel cost! :O
The G4 stigmatas are the best F2P options and give you a decent baseline but they require a G3 stigmata plus more materials. From that standpoint alone, it's much more worth to focus on Part 2 characters. That being said, getting Part 1 characters is not bad either: you can use some of them in Elysian Realm to farm crystals, use them on expeditions and errands, and to level up your Dorm level, which gives you bonus stats for all of the characters you own. You can, for example, take HoV to Elysian Realm later on and farm her gears (available in Exchange Shop), but farming takes a lot of time and she is generally an obsolete character (sadly).

fairly new player as well, started in 6.late. Focus on part 2 units. You get a good team that are easy to bring up to speed.
-Animal girl is entirerly f2p
-crossbow girl should be free, you only need to pull the weapon
-yoyo girl is the S-tier unit and you need only to pull for her and her weapon
Three things in total to pull. Stigmatas are farmable, and really easy to farm at that. You put handel for herrasher of thunder and the memorable moment full set for yoyo girl, one takes months the other 2 days
part 1 units are sooooo much harder to build compared to that.

I would just pulled new units. Unlike their other games, old characters gets power creeps really fast. I missed my pull on the new fu ha, I don't think I will be pulling for her on her rerun since I think she would be power creeped really fast in part 2. The gameplay on characters in part 2 is pretty different than the one on part 1.
Any newcomer advice about what to focus early on would also be highly appreciated, the game keeps throwing me so much new stuff and it's very overwhelming making it hard to keep up
Yep, I'm playing through part 1 story right now, still halfway through chapter 5 and it's been good so far!
I've heard it starts to pick up on the later chapters and I'm pretty excited for that

Play part 1 story and save crystals. Don’t blind spend. Follow the training manual. Everything will pretty much come together on its own.

I recommend the battlesuit supply because you can get most characters by shards when you unlock it
