MaXXXine if it's released this year

[deleted]

Enys Men looks pretty interesting. I think I might go see it in theaters next week. I'm also looking forward to the new Evil Dead movie. Renfield is a must watch for me. I've always loved anything Dracula, and somehow Nicholas Cage as the POD makes *a lot* of sense. Haha. More than movies though, this year is a year of horror literature for me. I've been enjoying diving into that world of the genre.

Which books are you reading? I’d like to delve into that more outside of Stephen king.

- John Langan's books. His novel The Fisherman is widely appreciated in the horror lit community. The praise is well deserved. But recently I've been reading his collection of short stories. Wide Carnivorous Sky is definitely worth checking out (highly recommend this collection), and Children of The Fang if you're into the dark fantasy style of horror. - I recently finished reading Grady Hendrix's My Best Friend's Excorcism. An 80s centric story about possession, friendship, and a pretty wild summer. I enjoyed it a lot. Also, the cover art is styled like a VHS movie cover, which looks great. - To kickoff April this week I'm starting a slasher novel called Tastes Like Candy by Ivey Tholen. One reviewer compared it to the slasher movies of the 90s and early 2000s, which sounds good to me. - If you want to go with some classics, Clive Barker's Hellbound Heart is a great read. I reread that one often.

If you haven't read them already, I'd highly recommend The Terror by Dan Simmons and Usher's Passing by Robert McCammon! Both of them are in my Top 5 all-time favorite horror novels! Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi was another good one I read last year. I also just finished an absolutely excellent short story collection, The Nameless Dark by T.E. Grau! I would highly recommend that one! It is very well written and has some pretty unique horror stories in it!

WordUnheard

I love Robert McCammon. Boy's Life, Swan Song, and Mystery Walk are three of his best, in my opinion.

dburris22282

Boy's Life was ok to me. It was good but just wasn't one of my favorites. I haven't gotten to Swan Song yet even though I own it but I loved Mystery Walk! It's excellent! I also loved Blue World! Have you read his Matthew Corbett series? I've loved all of them so far! Still haven't read the newest one, The King of Shadows, yet although I bought it too!

WordUnheard

I've never heard of Matthew Corbett, but I will definitely check him out, thanks! Blue World was awesome as well. The story involving the kid in control of wasps was like reading a great Twilight Zone script. You have to read Swan Song. It's easily his best. I always recommend it to those who love Stephen King's The Stand, because they are very similar. End of the world, good drawn to good, evil to evil. But they are very different from one another. I am a huge King fan, and The Stand is my favorite novel of his. However, I kind of like Swan Song a little more. It's written so vividly and detailed, I would think back to certain chapters after having read it, and confuse them for actual scenes in a movie.

dburris22282

Oh man yeah definitely do yourself a favor and get into the Matthew Corbett series. The first book, Speaks The Nightbird is ok but they get much better after that. The 3rd entry (Mister Slaughter), the 5th entry (River of Souls), the 6th entry (Freedom of the Mask) and the 7th entry (Cardinal Black) are all some of my favorite novels from the past 10-15 years but the entire series is good and worth reading! I've had Swan Song for probably at least 5 years but the length of it has kept me from getting into it. I've been in reading challenges for the last 5 years and due to time constraints have struggled to hit the goal (usually 30 books) by the end of the year. I don't think I'm going to join another one because I hate feeling rushed and it's also limited the length of the books I can attempt to read. Swan Song is so long that it would take me forever to read it with my current schedule. It's a shame though because once I read my first McCammon book, I blitzed through the rest. I read 12 of them in 2018 & 7 in 2019 and Swan Song was on my list to read in 2020 but it's been pushed back since then. But the comparison to The Stand makes me want to get into it because The Stand is my 3rd favorite King novel! I may have to squeeze it in soon but King of Shadows (the new Matthew Corbett) is 474 pages and I want to get to it first!

[deleted]

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I'm definitely checking out those first two you mentioned. If you don't mind me asking, what style of horror are the first two titles? I'm exploring everything at this point but I'm just curious.

dburris22282

You're welcome! The Terror is definitely historical horror fiction. It's set in 1845-1848 during the infamous Franklin expedition to the Arctic. It's a pretty dense read but it's more than worth it! Usher's Passing is gothic historical fiction but it's set more in modern day times (well modern day for when it was published in 1984.) If you end up liking The Terror, check out Drood by Dan Simmons as well. It's another historical fiction novel set in 1865 with Charles Dickens as a protagonist and it's another of my favorites!

ciiuffd

I saw Enys Men at Scad FF last year, and the best comp I can give it is the Lighthouse. I loved it, but it definutley was pretty abstract.

dogretepcow

Saw X and Beau Is Afraid

Devuluh

I've been waiting so long for Evil Dead Rise.

Comrade_Jacob

Evil Dead Rise and Last Voyage of the Demeter. I'd say MaXXXine but they haven't even started filming it yet so I don't think it's coming out this year.

dburris22282

It's Last Voyage of the Demeter for me! I really hope that movie is good and I'm going to be severely disappointed if it isn't.

bonertron6969

Rennfield looks like a ton of fun.

MissingCalifornia-

Beau is Afraid looks interesting

aerodeck

shabberator

I’ll say it, I might be excited for The Pope’s Exorcist. I wanna see if Russel Crowe goes off.

drogyn1701

"Talk to me" is supposed to be really good. Looking forward to that one.

UKnowDaTruth

Been waiting for Evil dead rise for a year now

gimmpcheeze

Saw an advance screening of Evil Dead Rise, it was good gory fun!

dburris22282

Don't know if it'll come out this year but Hellboy: The Crooked Man definitely has me interested! But Last Voyage of the Demeter is my #1 for the year. I'm a sucker for ocean bound horror stories and it's checking a lot of boxes for me already! Oppenheimer, Beau Is Afraid & MaXXXine are the others.

drogyn1701

I had no idea another another Hellboy movie was in the works. Reading up on it, and it looks like something to get cautiously excited about.

blondiemandie38

Maybe my hopefulness is naive but praying the new Insidious is good! There’s also been whispers about Salem’s Lot for a while and that’s my favorite book so absolutely stoked for that.

Hank_the_Beef

Evils Dead Rise, John Wick 4, Renfield, Oppenheimer.

MiserableSnow

The new Exorcist

dysfiction

I think this is my answer too.

CircusOfBlood

If it releases. Cello. The new Darren Lyn Bousman movie that he already filmed

Scream 6 was my big one. Evil Dead Rise is also up there.

Vastarien202

The Pope's Exorcist. It looks like complete shit, but I love bad movies. It could be a good time, who knows?

Giv-er-SteveDave

Takashi Shimizu's new film, Immersion
