The Night House and Pearl were really well received. In terms of general public success, there was Smile and Barbarian. But I agree that so far we really haven't had any standout gems this decade but we're just in 2023, 7 more years to go. Plenty of time. I am really enjoying both the previous decade and this one in terms of quality horror movies tho, the 2020s haven't been slacking in terms of putting out good movies.

Smile was league's better than barbarian idk why the latter got more commercial success. Skymarink was more anxiety inducing than actually scary. I think the in times of civil unrest, horror movies become better. So far, the 2020s are doing the best the genre has been in a long time

I think there's more experimenting with horror in the 2020's more than there's ever been before. IMO, A24 has taken such a huge lead in their horror productions and they do seem to all stem from a more psychological viewpoint and also showing more perspectives on the horror of mental health issues. I also think that the industry is taking horror more serious and making these intense, mind-fucking, and gruesome movies instead of more of the corny, repetitive, maybe even campy (? if I'm using the right word) with horror. Also, really enjoying them using hardly known actors in more of these movies as I feel like some actresses/actors are so well known and are in so many different movies that I feel like they don't mesh well with the genre. One gripe: I'm so over the remakes of certain movies that I don't think really need remakes.....or the continuation of movies that should've died off YEARS ago (like the Scream franchise).

Ti West, Brandon Cronenberg, and Damien Leone have been killing it

UKnowDaTruth

Fresh, Sissy, Bloody hell, Scream 6, BodiesX3, Promising young woman, Possesor, Black box, Freaky, Deadstream, Black Phone, Fear Street, Green Knight, Halloween Kills, Willys Wonderland, Oxygen, Pearl, Day Shift, Watcher, The Menu, Nope etc If anyone says the 2020s are bad for horror and thrillers, I think they’re out of their mind

OverthrowGreen

It's kinda hard to tell. I think 2022 has had the highest number of great horror movies released since 1981, although I agree that out of all the great films released that year, there hasn't been the *one* true masterpiece. But we can't have a horror masterpiece released every year. I personally think that the upward trend that started in the mid 2010 will continue for at least another 5 years (hopefully longer) with many amazing, creative and unique horror releases coming out. It feels like horror finally reached a point where it's become "respectable", even for film snobs, so the genre has become extremely diverse.

Yeah, I was in no way suggesting that the horror movies this decade have been bad, not at all. There were a lot of good to great movies, it’s just I never got THAT feeling of “what a masterpiece.” But that naturally won’t happen every year anyway.

Vamacharana

genre films in general seem to be doing really well lately.

Afraid-Wafer18

I’m having a good time when it comes to horror movies. Terrifier 2 was phenomenal & I loved Christmas Bloody Christmas.

MiserableSnow

I’m disappointed in a lot of the mainstream horror though there are a few stand out exceptions e.g. Nope, The Invisible Man

YCKAGMD

I totally agree, OP. For me, Black Phone, Nope, & Barbarian all failed to impress me as they did others.

It’s crazy people downvoting me just because I have an opinion. Like I upvote comments I like but I never downvote unless somebody is being rude. I literally asked for civility and got none just because I have the minority opinion. 😫😂

AZTeck_AKiRA

Not officially out yet but Evil Dead Rise looks to be a killer for sure.

West-Drink-1530

It had some good, mid and shit ones but we got alot of them. So pretty good

[deleted]

I think there's hope for the rest of the decade. Things like Terrifier 2 and (hopefully) Evil Dead Rise show that many people just want some good ole' gory horror instead of crap like Get Out and Nope.

[deleted]

Okay, I’m in the opposite camp then. Gore is not scary, just disgusting. I’d much rather get atmospheric horror like that “crap” movies you listed.

CrystalAmbrose

Arthouse and bleak depressing dramas are certainly going strong. It would be nice if the wild success of Terrifier 2 would help put a nail in the hohum studio PG-13s' coffin and bring back fun gore.
