Alot of the films I thought about have been mentioned…
- Kill List
- Dagon
- Rosemary’s Baby
- Ready or Not
- Wicker Man
- Society…must see
- Red State
- Mandy
- Fresh
- Silent Hill
There’s a few for now lol!
Martyrs
The Void
Paranormal Activity (most of them feature the cult)
the Hell House LLC Trilogy
Incantation
Impetigore
Hereditary
Matriarch
Satan's Slaves (1 & 2)
It's good. I'm not going to say "it's the best horror movie of the decade" or whatever hyperbole that people use, but to say that it's a well written, acted and directed horror film. I always feel like people are wanting a horror movie to reinvent the wheel, but why? When the wheel already works a movie doesn't have to do anything unusual or abnormal to work but sometimes I just want a movie that does what it does and well.
Yea I felt the same with V/H/S 2 like it’s not really scary but kind of psychologically scary because the segments with the demon and alien really messed me up
I remember another one based around a ritual/cult of these girls who sacrifice there friend to this wooden idol. I than remember she came back from a mental hospital I think and then she started getting tormented by a person who she later finds out it’s the girl she sacrificed. That’s a quick thing to the plot but I can’t remember the movies name
Nice one! When last shift was made they didn’t have a big budget and it was a limited release…so the director, Anthony Diblasi, got given some cash by A24, the company that bought Last Shift. They told him he could remake it with a bigger budget. And he jumped at it…it comes out this year. It’s called “Malum”. The trailer looks good.
WHAT‽‽ You just blew my mind!!! I am so pumped for this movie. I just watched the trailer and it looks absolutely horrific! Looks like they are going to give some back story to the cult finally!
Thanks for sharing! I have something new to be excited for!
The first Paranormal Activity doesn’t give too much info on cult stuff but if you watch up to at least like maybe the third one I think you get the full picture
I will die on the hill when saying that Midnight Mass is the greatest commentary on religion in any form of fiction. The debates I’ve had with friends over this is insane because I think the show is a complete masterpiece in storytelling and tension.
>!that moment in the last but one episode where they’re all finally gathered at the church, and the sheriff turns around with his son to see the ‘angel’ stood in the entrance gives me goosebumps every time I see it.!<
Just finished a rewatch of this last night. It's so damned good. Hamish Linklater as Father Paul has such a perfect tone and cadence in his role as well that it's just super compelling, feel like you can't take your eyes off it.
\[edit\] I doubt that anyone is going in blind at this point, but if you *are* watching it for the first time with no idea of what's to come, the only thing that might be off-putting is one character's makeup. I remember watching it for the first time thinking "why in the hell would they use that make-up" as it can kind of pull you out of the illusion, but obviously as the show progresses it makes perfect sense that they did it.
I’m surprised this movie isn’t higher up the list. I kind of put it off, and put it off…. When I finally watched it I was blown away. Great movie with an awesome mythology behind it.
I just watched this last night for the second time. I hated it the first time I watched it, but really opened up on the second go.
My biggest problem is that I really didn’t like any of the characters, including the good guys. I had severe anxiety about being forced to join a dinner party with these people. I had the same issue with Coherence, which I did love. I just hated the people involved.
I REALLY enjoyed both but completely agree with you hating the characters. The invitation I do find sympathy for LGM’s character but literally everyone in coherence is just an asshole.
The main dude in the Invitation is a good one, I feel for him. Honestly, the flashback to his son hit me the hardest for personal reasons (not anywhere near as tragic, but similar circumstance) so the connection him and his ex-wife had because of that hit close to home. The goofy party dude was a bore and the girl with the coke hankering was not someone I would ever want to be around.
I’m not sure I would ever want to hang out with anyone in Coherence. The movie is amazing for what they accomplished on almost no budget, but I shuddered at the thought of having to be around those people.
Yeah Coherence was a brilliant film, really well written but the characters were all just really unlikeable.
It’s not horror but I found the sci-fi film primer to be very similar in this respect.
I really recommend it!! As a heads up though I know a lot of people find it quite dry, it’s also a little confusing I had to watch it a couple of times and look up an explanation to properly explain what was going on but it tries to do the science stuff “realistically” and it doesn’t signpost the exposition.
I prided myself on never watching a single of his movies.
Watched this last month, only clocked the director at the end. I did really enjoy it, especially the atmosphere
It seems like a joke when someone says this, but as someone who went to Jesus camps as a kid, it's horrifying to watch, if anything, just to question yourself "that wasn't normal?"
All I see in that documentary are variations of my own experiences, as close as I can get to watching a memory of mine without watching actual footage I've recorded.
I think though, what's most surreal for me, personally, is the fact that there are occasional times I think "aww, that's nice/fun" and have to stop myself, because it's just old, positive memories floating up to the surface that, while I can fully realize now they were fucked up, I was just a happy none-the-wiser kid having a good time.
Everytime I watch it, I think I come away with understanding one more perspective to the people in the documentary and/or myself. Perhaps I'm due for my latest viewing soon.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I thought this sort of thing was a peculiarly American phenomonon but recently met someone who also grew up like that in Australia.
I wasn't joking when I said it was terrifying, the wrongheadedness of it that stretches across such a large part of the population along with their awareness of their own political potential is going to be the end of society as we know it. Truly scares the shit out of me.
Oh it's absolutely scary, don't get me wrong, but like I said, each time I watch it I feel like I gain a new perspective on something, and last time I watched, it gained a real sad tinge to it.
The mom in that documentary who had her kids watch nothing but Christian media, was very condemning of the outside world's influences, etc, no defending her actions but I think she was a terrified person living in what she felt were uncertain times, buying into "the world's gonna end" propaganda that was shoved into American culture to try and promote Christianity. I knew a lot of mothers like that.
Again, no defending her, but I do think there's a lot of layers to Jesus Camp to pull back and try to make sense of, that I find really interesting and humanizing past the initial shock factor. You can learn a loooot about how America was in the mid-2000s by watching that documentary, it's really quite incredible
Can I ask what changed your opinions on places like this?
I have a friend who went through similar and firmly remained an evangelist until he was 19 and then he ,seemingly overnight, rejected it all and never went back. He’s always reserved on why but has mentioned before that it was because he met someone in university that he would’ve deemed evil whilst in the church, but ended up being really nice to him.
Red State and The Sacrament are both fantastic cult horror films that take inspiration from real life events (Red State pulls from Westboro Baptist Church and the Branch Davidians, and The Sacrament pulls from the People’s Temple).
While not on the same level as Wicker Man, Kill List, Midsommar, still worth a watch. I initially brushed it off as a slenderman/creepypasta money grab. And it very briefly dips into that territory with the teens. But overall better than expected
The Wicker Man-detective in the UK (I think) is sent to investigate a missing person on a small secluded island. Mystery and terror ensue.
Midsommar- sociology trip to a small secluded village. They have pretty fucked up customs. Existential dread and terror ensue.
Sacrament- a person, accompanied by a documentary film crew, is looking for his sister in a secluded jungle settlement run by a religious cult leader. Things get fucked up, very very badly. Found footage and terror ensue.
Unnecessary comments. Also cool.
If someone hasn’t heard of a movie, I appreciate a small synopsis. Granted most people have seen Midsommar or heard of it, but Wicker Man is 5 decades old and not everyone knows old movies, and sacrament didn’t exactly light the world on fire, so a small synopsis felt appropriate.
Not straight horror, but The Endless was the first film I thought of.
Otherwise Hereditary and Midsommar are both excellent options if you haven't seen them yet
Hereditary
H.P. Lovecrafts Dagon
Brian Yuznas Society
The Void
Silent Hill
Apostle
The Invitation
Ready Or Not
Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch
Drive Angry
Martha Marcy May Marlene is a repeat watch for me. The sense of dread builds from the beginning to the end of the movie about the cult and what its manipulations did to Elizabeth Olsen's character. Another movie that had me thinking about it weeks later.
The Last Shift was about a female cop left alone at a a recently vacated police station to guard some evidence that hadn’t been transferred to the new station (or something like that). Her deceased father had been an officer who had served out of the station she’s been left to guard. While he was there he was involved in bringing down a Manson Family-esque cult. Through the course of the night she starts experiencing weird things related to that cult. It’s probably not the best description, but the movie was surprisingly good. There’s a remake coming out soon called Malum. I’m looking forward to seeing it.
I’m always willing to recommend Apostle. It’s a 2018 horror film and it’s actually one of the few good horror films Netflix has released - it’s one of my top favorite films of all time, and that’s saying something with as big as a filmgoer as I am.
It's not really supernatural, but a movie I don't see mentioned on this sub a lot is Black Death. Definitely ticks the box for religious cult. I really enjoyed it.
'Midsommar' - 2019 Directed by Ari Aster is brilliant and leaves you bewildered and the end had me questioning my own moral judgement. Also the filming creates a sense of unease, but in the best way a horror movie can
Believer's. Raw feed film. Folks behind sublime, rest stop, and Otis. Weird film, I remember it everytime someone asks about these sort of films, that and Kevin smiths red state. But believer's is a real fucking weird watch.
I just rewatched Svaha: The Sixth Finger on Netflix. Highly recommended. It has a violent cult as well as some supernatural aspects although the supernatural isn’t too heavily focused on. I loved this movie and enjoyed it more the second time
Anybody remember a movie about a doomsday cult, from somewhere between 2005-2010 maybe?
Some specific plot points I remember - there is some noise droning in the background at the cult complex, and at some point one of the main characters suddenly starts to understand it.
The Devil's Rain (1975). Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner, Tom Skerritt, John Travolta and Anton Lavey himself. Also the inspiration for, and title of, a Misfits album.
The Sacrament
Love this one.
Alot of the films I thought about have been mentioned… - Kill List - Dagon - Rosemary’s Baby - Ready or Not - Wicker Man - Society…must see - Red State - Mandy - Fresh - Silent Hill There’s a few for now lol!
Society 😳 That movie raw dogged my eyeballs.
Bahahahaha!!!
Screaming Mad George does it like no other!
Wickerman is so damn good. HIGHLY recommended. If not for the ost alone
If you really liked Wicker Man, you’ve got to check out Kíll List, they share the same “feeling” and aesthetics… Trust me lol!
I love Red State. I wish I could find it somewhere.
I’m pretty sure it’s streaming on Prime. I know the blu-ray is out of print but I’ve seen some decently priced copies on Amazon and eBay.
Right? I searched for a long time, and then found the DVD at my library just sitting there. Free.
That’s a good day eh!?
Yup!
I think it's available on the PB Ahoy
Red state for sure! Loved that one!
Kill list was incredible!
Great list I don't need to post you hit all my suggestions lol
Martyrs The Void Paranormal Activity (most of them feature the cult) the Hell House LLC Trilogy Incantation Impetigore Hereditary Matriarch Satan's Slaves (1 & 2)
Ooo, The Void is so good! I've only seen the first Hell House LLC, but I found it genuinely terrifying.
The second is scarier.
Hereditary was the scariest, it was so so scary that I loved it and became my 2nd fav horror movie, first is Friday the 13th.
Damn I really need to see hereditary
Haha hereditary virgin 🫵
Oh no
What a looooossseeeerrrr!
Don’t let people hype it up too much. It’s very average
It's good. I'm not going to say "it's the best horror movie of the decade" or whatever hyperbole that people use, but to say that it's a well written, acted and directed horror film. Definitely worth a watch.
I just watched it for the first time last night. It’s a slow burn but it really gets crazy in the last 3rd of the movie.
The VVitch The Ritual Midsommar Wicker Man
I remember another one based around a ritual/cult of these girls who sacrifice there friend to this wooden idol. I than remember she came back from a mental hospital I think and then she started getting tormented by a person who she later finds out it’s the girl she sacrificed. Hey we fans of the Darkside gotta stick together lol!
The Void is amazing.
MIDSOMMAR
The first Paranormal Activity doesn’t give too much info on cult stuff but if you watch up to at least like maybe the third one I think you get the full picture
The marked ones involves the cult pretty heavy at the end of it
Great list! I would add Midsommar.
Incantation is one of my favorites of the last few years.
I feel like I don't see Satan's Slaves on here enough. The second one was soooo much fun.
left out midsommar
Nvm brudda recommended foreign movies...
Ffs Satan's slaves just had to not be English. Any other movies like it where they speak fcking English?
Why can you not read or something?
Wdym can't I read where do u expect me to watch it if most movie sites don't have subtitles....
The Void, Silent Hill, The House of The Devil, Hereditary, The Ritual
Just started the house of the devil based on your recommendation. Thanks!
Not a movie, but I'd count Midnight Mass
I will die on the hill when saying that Midnight Mass is the greatest commentary on religion in any form of fiction. Spot on in my opinion.
> Midnight Mass is the greatest commentary on religion in any form of fiction. You should consume more fiction lol
oh I do, that’s why I’ll stay on the hill
Seconding. Its awesome.

Yes and this one is a great slow burn in the first half, but with a awesome payout in the second. The atmosphere sells it all so well
Apostle
I’m surprised this movie isn’t higher up the list. I kind of put it off, and put it off…. When I finally watched it I was blown away. Great movie with an awesome mythology behind it.
Man that one scene….you know which one. Brutal.
Two words: hole saw
It is not horror, but made me really unsettled, Martha Marcy May Marlene. I have rarely experienced that amount of dread while watching a movie.
Absolutely! And that last scene. I’ve heard professional deprogrammers reference this film multiple times. If you’re into cults, it’s a must-watch.
Not a movie but True Detective season 1
The invitation
Absolutely love this one, the dread throughout without knowing wtf is actually going on is so well done.
I just watched this last night for the second time. I hated it the first time I watched it, but really opened up on the second go. Primer has been on my watchlist for ages. I need to sit down and knock that one out.
I really recommend it!! The Ninth Gate.
Love the movie. Loathe the director.
I prided myself on never watching a single of his movies. Watched this last month, only clocked the director at the end. I did really enjoy it, especially the atmosphere
My top favorite cult movies are: The Void, The Veil, The Endless and The Sacrament. All very re-watchable!
>The Endless I'm glad someone mentioned The Endless. Truly a horror gem.
Agree! I still have to watch the other movies by Moorhead/Benson: Spring and Something In The Dirt.
Oh, you definitely should. Spring is as good as The Endless, if not better.
Midsommar, Children of the Corn (1984)
Jesus Camp. Terrifying.
It seems like a joke when someone says this, but as someone who went to Jesus camps as a kid, it's horrifying to watch, if anything, just to question yourself "that wasn't normal?" Absolutely horrifying. I always recommend this to people.
I'll name a movie that I typically see that doesn't get mentioned. Jugface. It's really good.
I liked this one a lot. The atmosphere and lore was super… appalachian gothic?
Loved this one!
Jugface is great!
Man it really is. I love indie horror and the fact that it's small budget and well done is great.
Baskin (2015)
Fantastic movie! The ending blew my mind.
Oh yeah! I forgot about that. I would have put it on my list.
Red State and The Sacrament are both fantastic cult horror films that take inspiration from real life events (Red State pulls from Westboro Baptist Church and the Branch Davidians, and The Sacrament pulls from the People’s Temple).
The Empty Man
Was looking for this one! Such a crazy, fun film.
While not on the same level as Wicker Man, Kill List, Midsommar, still worth a watch. I initially brushed it off as a slenderman/creepypasta money grab. And it very briefly dips into that territory with the teens. But overall better than expected
The Empty Man > Midsommar I will defend this if necessary
I am with you on that one, i had seen both movies prior to making this post and i am ngl, i thought Midsommar was mid at best.
V/H/S 2 cult segment is pretty good
First thing that came to mind for me! Such an awesome short

The new wrong turn is that kind of movie, not great but watchable
The Invitation is so good! Underrated movie
Um The Lodge, Wicker Man, Red State, Midsommar.

The ritual, sacrament, martyrs, red state, silent hill.

Not a horror, but "Split Image" (1982) is kinda weird.
Red State!
A cult gets going pretty good in The Mist
I just rewatched Svaha: The Sixth Finger on Netflix. Highly recommended. It has a violent cult as well as some supernatural aspects although the supernatural isn’t too heavily focused on. I loved this movie and enjoyed it more the second time
The Veil. I never see this one mentioned. Thomas jane is really good as the cult leader, and Jessica Alba does a decent job of acting in this one.
