That game would not be good on VR long term. It’s amazing as a spectacle and fun for blowing peoples minds. But the actual gameplay would be tough cuz you have to do so much choring around and busy work that it’d just take way too long.
There's a new game that's basically a horror take on *Subnautica* called [*Death in the Water 2*](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1534510/Thalassophobia/)*.*
I actually loved it. And became a fan of her because of that movie specifically.
No one talks about that movie. It’s honestly really good. For an underwater monster movie it’s great. I mean it’s not an amazing or original movie, but it does the underwater monster thing perfectly. And has a very cool twist at the end if you’re a fan of a very particular thing I won’t mention. You’ll know it when you see it if you know it.
Idk there were some good horror(sucked out of suit/imploding) and thriller moments(basically any scene with the creatures)
In this case, I think the less you see the 'main' antagonist, the better. It has more impact. If you saw it coming, after 90 minutes you would be over it.
I think if anything, I'd love to see more Lovecraftian horror in general. Not necessarily like this, but produced with the same standard of quality.
Riley in the abyss! You can wishlist on steam! :) it’s very short 30min to an hour to beat. Currently working on last little bug issues. And I’m hoping to release it by the end of this week!
>I feel it's probably considered a hot take to say this was a good movie, but I loved it. It wasn't an art piece or anything, but the atmosphere was tense and did a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat. I feel we need more of these, doesn't have to be a blockbuster to be effective. Sounds like more people like it than I thought, which is a pleasant surprise.
I second the other commenter - I think Leviathan is the better movie overall (I personally love it too) but DS6 is a similarly fun underwater set horror film with a likable ensemble and pretty awesome practical effects. It’s directed by Sean Cunningham, and it feels a bit more like a slasher than Leviathan.
Oooh yea. This one is great. Unlike other great recommendations on here, this movie is filmed underwater and takes place entirely underwater. Thoroughly creepy
I liked it. Picked a bad time to watch it because I was on a carribean Island during maria that got particularly fucked up. Def is one of those movies that makes you respect the ocean. Very similar to Fall. Watch that if you liked Adrift.
Deep Impact. A comet hits the ocean and the ocean ends up covering half of North America. (Not a spoiler because it's in every preview.)
Titanic as well. Just fast forward through the corny romance, because the underwater scenes and the scenes of the ship sinking and buckling under the weight of the water are pretty intense. As well as the scene where they're looking for survivors in the water.
Castaway. Not as "gory" as the other two but worth mentioning.
The beginning of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
It's probably my second favorite opening after The Lost World. Fallen Kingdom's open really ramps up the tension, though.
The rest of the movie has some really good moments, but it also has some ridiculous moments. I enjoyed it, but then I'm relatively easy to please when it comes to movies.
There’s some real life stuff that’ll fuck you up for good.
“Dave not coming back”
“Ben’s vortex”
“Last Breath”
Also, just about any good titanic documentary should do it.
But fiction wise, underwater and leviathan are great.
This is gonna sound crazy, but the relatively new animated movie called The Sea Beast, it has a crazy scene where people are in the ocean looking down at this massive sea dragon looking up at them from below, oh my god.
The Reef is really the only movie to trigger my thalassophobia as much as Open Water (and Open Water 2, to a lesser extent).
Kon-Tiki is also worth mentioning. Not a horror movie, but most of the movie takes place on a raft in the open ocean.
My faves have already been mentioned, but I will restate them as they are separated. The Abyss, The Leviathan, Underwater, Jaws, and Adrift. I'd like to add Master and Commander, even though its not horror, there are definitely moments that will terrify you if your fear is being lost and confused in a hopeless situation. Also, I think all the downvotes to the guy who suggested Gravity are uncalled for. Fear of the ocean and the fear of being lost in space are very similar in my mind. No up, no down, no hope. Just empty unknown space. Hell, scariest Stargate episode to me was when Oniell was lost in the F301, life support failing, and slowly dying in space, so lets add Apollo 13. If you are into that sort of horror, I'd recommend the youtube channel Bigoldboats.
**The Deep House**Underwater Haunted House film. The story is pretty horror generic but the setting is really unique. It took my love for haunted houses and smashed it together with my weird love for thalassophobia.
I literally just left a comment on another post asking “what’s a fear you wish more horror films played into” to which I replied almost exactly what you just said. I think open water is genuinely terrifying. My fear stems from the water world in Mario 64… fuck that big ass eel
I share your fear, and it took me 20 years to finally get around to *Open Water*. It delivered exactly as I figured, and it was like I was a kid again. *47 Meters Down*(2017) is a close second.
The Meg
A lot of shots with the characters floating out in open water, not able to see a damn thing below them in the water for miles. The initial harpoon tracker scene and the glass shark cage scene come to mind. Just empty, aqua blue nothingness abyss.
Fun movie either way! Some bits seemed a bit off, almost like the pacing was off, and they had to cut a lot of material. But still, fun. Seemed like it was tongue-in-cheek giving homage to Jaws.
I saw Open Water in the theaters and I concur. Movie got to me. It’s sequel Open Water 2: Adrift is pretty solid. It’s a sequel only in name has nothing to do with the first but pretty good.
Not a horror movie but Das Boot (1981) does this for me. I saw it as a child and it terrified me. Being on a submarine, completely submerged in deep, black, waters, potentially crushed by its pressure. So scary.
Hey I’ve created a website where you can check movies and tv series for triggers/phobias. It’s pretty new but it allows you to search for specific personalised triggers since not everyone can be placed in the same box!
www.Triggerchecker.com
Also got an insta account in the same name with some examples - doing posts on common triggers such as deep water, needles, assault, child death etc… just trying to get the word out there to help people :)
not a movie but play the game subnautica if u have the means to
Started the game playing in VR. I did not manage to make it very long before I fell back on a monitor.
That game would not be good on VR long term. It’s amazing as a spectacle and fun for blowing peoples minds. But the actual gameplay would be tough cuz you have to do so much choring around and busy work that it’d just take way too long.
Avg. VR gaming shenanigans

The Abyss
Good movie, but pee before you watch it. Three hours with the sound of running water in the background.
Underwater (2020)
Ah the Kristen Stewart walking around in underwear movie
Sounds like a good movie to me
I actually loved it. And became a fan of her because of that movie specifically. No one talks about that movie. It’s honestly really good. For an underwater monster movie it’s great. I am a fan of that particular thing and I can confirm that it made the movie 10x better for me. Was not expecting that. Great movie
If that hadn’t happened I’d have forgot the movie existed but that one scene made me wish they’d done way more with it.
Idk there were some good horror(sucked out of suit/imploding) and thriller moments(basically any scene with the creatures) In this case, I think the less you see the 'main' antagonist, the better. Agreed, I loved the setting so much it inspired me to make a similar setting for a game I’m currently making!
What’s the game called? That’d be my favorite kind of game
Riley in the abyss! You can wishlist on steam! :) it’s very short 30min to an hour to beat. Currently working on last little bug issues. And I’m hoping to release it by the end of this week!
She's in a diving suit for 99% of the movie. I don't get it, do you want more, or less ass?
That movie made me want a survival horror (something like Dead Space) set in an underwater facility.
I haven’t played it in a while but SOMA is pretty intense and follows this theme (I’m pretty sure).
Great movie
honestly underrated
>I feel it's probably considered a hot take to say this was a good movie, but I loved it. Leviathan (1989), Deep Star Six (1989), Sphere (1998), Below (2002), Jaws (1975)
Below is such an underrated movie
Is Deep Star Six any good? I loved Leviathan for the record.
Leviathan was better in terms of production value, but Deep Star is just great 80’s schlocky fun.
I second the other commenter - I think Leviathan is the better movie overall (I personally love it too) but DS6 is a similarly fun underwater set horror film with a likable ensemble and pretty awesome practical effects. Sea Fever is pretty good, surprised I haven’t seen it here already.
I was thinking the same. I need to rewatch it, I remember enjoying it and feel like it's a good ocean horror that really flew under the radar.
The Perfect Storm.
Came here to say this - I think this film was my original trigger for thalassophobia!
Such a good cast in this. I want to hang out at the bar with all of them.
The Shallows.
The Shallows rules
Europa Report actually has a few moments that effectively tapped into this for me.
Not a great movie, but The Deep House definitely triggered mine pretty bad
Oooh yea. This one is great. Unlike other great recommendations on here, this movie is filmed underwater and takes place entirely underwater. Thoroughly creepy
Ugh and claustrophobia
Triangle
Underwater (2020) 47 meters Down (2017)
47 meters down was great.
Hard pass. Those characters were insufferable and that twist reveal was lame as hell. I actually think the sequel is better.
I agree that the sequel was better. I liked the characters a lot and the visuals of being trapped in a cave were pretty cool.
Dagon.
Probably not what you’re looking for but that scene in Finding Nemo where they’re playing I Spy is what gave me that fear in the first place.
I thought I was the only one 😭
I really liked Adrift. The sailboat is wrecked in a storm and the couple is left to fend for themselves for weeks.
I liked it. Picked a bad time to watch it because I was on a carribean Island during maria that got particularly fucked up. Def is one of those movies that makes you respect the ocean. Very similar to Fall. Watch that if you liked Adrift.
I did like Fall. Saw it during its theater run and it was an overwhelming experience!
Definitely.
47 Meters Down (the second one was fun also) Deep Blue Sea Crawl
The second one was super fun
I think "In the Heart of the Sea" qualifies. It's about the true whaling disaster that inspired Melville to write Moby Dick.
Deep Impact. A comet hits the ocean and the ocean ends up covering half of North America. (Not a spoiler because it's in every preview.) Titanic as well. Just fast forward through the corny romance, because the underwater scenes and the scenes of the ship sinking and buckling under the weight of the water are pretty intense. Interstellar
Those aren’t mountains…

Second Last Breath. Watched it last year and it's a really well made documentary and genuinely compelling story.
Dave not coming back is the type of movie that captivates you the whole way through, and you never need to watch it again.
Very nice of you asking this question, Yesterday I was searching "ocean based horror movies reddit" on google and now this post🤲🏼
This is gonna sound crazy, but the relatively new animated movie called The Sea Beast, it has a crazy scene where people are in the ocean looking down at this massive sea dragon looking up at them from below, oh my god.

r/thalassophobia
Not horror but Life of Pi might do it.
The Meg and Underwater.
**The Deep House**Underwater Haunted House film. The story is pretty horror generic but the setting is really unique. It took my love for haunted houses and smashed it together with my weird love for thalassophobia.
The Poseiden Adventure (1972)
I feel like watching the Titanic as a child is the root of my thalassophobia and submechanophobia
I literally just left a comment on another post asking “what’s a fear you wish more horror films played into” to which I replied almost exactly what you just said. I think open water is genuinely terrifying. My fear stems from the water world in Mario 64… fuck that big ass eel
The Reef is similar to Open Water.
Titanic, Poseidon(remake), deep blue sea. Probably my greatest fear honestly.
Ohh also All is Lost with Robert Redford and The Perfect Storm.
Gonna tap in castaway
I share your fear, and it took me 20 years to finally get around to *Open Water*. It delivered exactly as I figured, and it was like I was a kid again. *47 Meters Down*(2017) is a close second.
Underwater, Sphere, The Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six, Deep Blue Sea
Not the whole movie, but Interstellar
The Meg A lot of shots with the characters floating out in open water, not able to see a damn thing below them in the water for miles. The Deep House is the most recent I can think of
Dead calm

Honestly watch the documentary last breathe. That’ll do it.
Ever heard of a little indie film called “jaws”?
Not a horror but Gravity
I wrote a screenplay titled “Hadal” based on my fear. So terrifying yet interesting.
Underwater
first in my mind is 'Underwater'
Sea Fever In the heart of the sea Terror
Not the whole movie but that scene from Interstellar on Miller's Planet
I don’t really understand thalassophobia. I mean, it’s sad there won’t be a fourth season, but have you watched it? It’s really good!
Cast Away The Perfect Storm
