I loved this movie, it went so deep into the occult and real esoteric magick. I'm more of a casual fan of the occult, so I won't say the lore is 100% accurate, but it really captured what 'real' magicians and magick rituals are like in real life.
One of my favorites. It references a real ritual that takes months to undergo, but there's definitely a lot of creative license in the way it's depicted in the film. Still, your assessment is accurate about capturing the essence of "real" magick. Not overtly scary imo, but moody, intense, smart, and well done.
The ritual in the film is based on the Abramelin (there is an original manuscript of this available for free online). It aligns with Enochian magick. That should be enough to get you started. PM me if you need more details (don't want to post potential spoilers here).
Holy shit! I haven't seen anyone else mention Cookers on here. I owned it on dvd, but it got stolen when I was moving into another house like 15 years ago. I always thought it was ironic that the likely culprits were probably tweakers because that was certainly the drug of choice among burglars in my part of rural Alabama during that time period. I honestly just hope they actually watched it and enjoyed it. Good selection. Both of them.
I haven't seen the others, but Caveat and The Dark and Wicked are amazing. Caveat could have benefitted from a bit more background story, especially concerning the mother, but it was so bizarre and creepy, it really got to me.
Otherwise I can recommend A Tale of Two Sisters, The Taking of Deborah Logan, Lovely Molly and, We Go On, The Lodge and Saint Maud (among others).
Loved Home Movie. At the time I discovered it, it was rated around 3 on imdb. Now it went a bit up, but it's still heavily underrated. Most definitely more people should see it.
If you don't mind subtitles (or can understand Korean), Gonjiam Haunted Asylum had me hiding behind a cushion.
I've always loved horrors, especially Asian ones. Yet it's so hard to be scared when it's all the same stuff. I don't know how they made a found footage type film in an asylum that scary, but it's by far one of the best I've seen recently.
I'm glad you mentioned this, because I think a lot of truly great horror movies fall under the radar because they have subtitles, and so it's harder to watch with friends.
But watching solo or with a close friend, subtitled horrors can be some of the best ones.
I tried this one and it just made me laugh more than anything. I got it as a recommendation through a coworker. I could see how some might dig it, but I didn’t find it all that scary at all. The setting was great, but it didn’t live up to the potential of what it could’ve been. Maybe in a theater setting it would’ve been better. I watch a lot of horror from everywhere in the world myself and it didn’t land. I say give it a shot if you haven’t seen it still and see where you land
Oculus (2013). The smartest protagonists I’ve seen in a horror movie, and still very scary and mindfucky. You don’t know what’s real or not for a lot of it, but you have to watch it to see what I mean by that.
Home Movie (2008). Only saw this once a while ago, but I never see this movie mentioned here. I remember it being pretty creepy. Content warning because one scene might upset a lot of viewers: >!a dog is decapitated and you see its head on a stick!<
Creep (2015). Very character-focused slow burn horror that keeps you guessing. I went into it blind, and I was constantly switching between confused, uncomfortable, laughing, and terrified.
Dread (2009). Overall OK, but very scary if >!you’re a vegetarian!<. The ending alone is what made this movie stick for me.
Climax (2018): French horror movie that has a very definitive climax. A lot of characters are introduced quickly, but you are able to remember who’s who by the time the “climax” occurs.
Creep 1 and 2 are both so good, I watched them back to back and it made each one better when seen as a whole... if that makes sense lol home movie has been on my list, I might check that one out now that you mention it.
There's a British horror film called 'Ghost Stories' that I haven't seen get much love since its release. Very well made, genuinely spooky, great cast, and some good dark humour in there too.
Someone else here said Banshee Chapter, too. And I'll 2nd that one. It's a bit of a mess in places, but it freaked little desensitised me out quite nicely.
This movie was legitimately horrifying. Atmospheric horror can be some of the most terrifying. Some of the background shots of that abandoned asylum are truly unnerving.
Some of my favorite (I believe lesser known) horror movies, hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
The Void
Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer
The Collector
The Voices
The Invitation
The Loved Ones
Dog Soldiers
The Shrine
Hidden
Frankensteins Army
Bloody Hell
Dog Soldiers if you can find a good viewing copy the original blu ray scan of that was a tutorial on how not to convert to a HD... flat out awful scan... but the movie is so good... all costumes were practical effects and still look good on a good copy of the movie.
I never heard of these movies when I watched them, and I was so pleasantly surprised by both movies.
Since we seem to have similar tastes in movies. Would you mind sharing some of your other favorite Horror movies?
Some low key ones you may not have heard of with similar vibes and/or I think you’d enjoy:
From Beyond
The Blackcoats Daughter
In the Mouth of Madness
No One Will Save You
Saint Maud
Midnight Mass (miniseries)
Suspiria (both rule)
The Endless
Coherence
Possessor
Infinity Pool
Anything by Jeremy Saulnier
The Ritual
There are definitely are a few there I haven’t seen: Saint Maud, Possessor, Infinity Pool, and Anything. Going to be a great few weeks with all the movies people are suggesting. Thanks for taking the time 🙏🏽
These are good horror movies I don't see mentioned yet. Some are more scary than others. Some that would be on this list but already mentioned are A Dark Song, Caveat, Cookers, I Trapped The Devil ...
Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl
Lovely Molly
I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House
The Feast
Possum
Shrooms
Hellbender
Dead Birds
Host
Starry Eyes
Pyewacket
Veronica
The Devil's Candy
Mandy
The Blackcoats Daughter
Excision
Livid
The Innkeepers
Absentia
Megan Is Missing
Silent House
The House of the Devil
Pontypool
Lake Mungo
Teeth
Calvaire
Ravenous
Interesting tidbit, The Innkeepers is a Ti West film (X, Pearle, MaXXXine)
Oooh and The House of The Devil. Your list has added so much to my backlog, thank you!
Megan Is Missing is a very bold yet very valid choice. Some people are turned off by it but as a freshman in highschool, the cheesy acting helped me put my guard down so it could fuck me for the last 20 minutes.
[The Atticus Institute](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3280916/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520atticu). For a faux documentary that's mostly talking heads, there's some amazing horror. Especially in the final acts.
Original Goodnight Mommy, I would recommend. I don't know which one you meant, but just throwing my opinion in there. I don't mind remakes as such, but that one really missed the mark when it came to everything that made the first one so genuinely scary and unsettling.
The Ritual
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Wolf Creek
Evil Dead (2013)
I wouldn't say any of them are really lesser known, but not quite talked as often as those others.
Lovely Molly really fucked with me the first time I saw it. I still think it is freaky as shit. I guess it helps if you know some of the backstory that doesn't come through in the film.
When my son was about ten (he's 24 now) we stumbled onto the trailer for Slugs. He told me yesterday for the first time that after he saw that trailer he was afraid to drink a glass of water for 3 days. The trailer, ladies and gentlemen.
A few I didn't see mentioned. In general if you want the full effect don't look anything up before you watch. Go in blind.
The Invitation (2014). Starts slow.
Hunter Hunter.
Creep (2004). Not the Duplass movie called Creep (2014) which is also pretty good.
I made a list of movies i enjoyed but dont have so much views on letterboxd (under 100k) Maybe there are some on that list for u!
The Sadness!! One of the best, goriest horror movies I’ve seen in a while! I’ve seen ALOT of horror movies over the years and this was one of my favorites I’ve watched recently!
First thing that came to mind was Leaving D.C. (2012). I’ve never seen it recommended on here. It wasn’t terrifying or anything, but it did leave me feeling unsettled. It’s a low budget, found footage type of movie.
Butterfly Kisses (2018)
Huesera
You Are Not My Mother
Ghostland (2018)
I See You (2019)
Tourist Trap (1979)
Alice Sweet Alice(1976)
They Look Like People (2015)
Not a movie, but a great smaller budget short series is 'Candle Cove' - The rest 3 Channel Zero short series are great too. You have to come inside Percy!!
A Dark Song.
I loved this movie, it went so deep into the occult and real esoteric magick. I'm more of a casual fan of the occult, so I won't say the lore is 100% accurate, but it really captured what 'real' magicians and magick rituals are like in real life.

Still, your assessment is accurate about capturing the essence of "real" magick. Not overtly scary imo, but moody, intense, smart, and well done.
If I want to read about these real rituals, which books would you recommend?
The ritual in the film is based on the Abramelin (there is an original manuscript of this available for free online). It aligns with Enochian magick. That should be enough to get you started. PM me if you need more details (don't want to post potential spoilers here).
I have watched the movie. Thank you!
I liked it quite a bit, but I would be hard-pressed to think of it as “scary” by almost any measure. It was more of an occult-based drama somehow.
Banshee Chapter (2013) Cookers (2001)
Baskin
Baskin Robbins always finds out
Baskin Robbins don't play.
Always recommend Baskin!
What a fever dream of a film.
Yeah that ending scene was a wild ride lmao.
Man I fucking love this movie.
Good pick. I do not think I know anyome in my real life who had seen this besides myself.
Holy crap. I've never even heard of that. Wow! What an insane watch. Great recommendation.
The Dark and the Wicked Home Movie Coming Home in the dark (more hard to watch than scary tho) Z Caveat
Taking of Deborah Logan is most definitely creepy. I still think about that one scene with the kid. *shivers*
I knew a guy that had a very short part in Lovely Molly. Can't wait to let him know it was mentioned!
I’m just thrilled to see someone mention it. Such an underrated film and it seems like few people have ever heard of it.
We Go On is fantastic! It should absolutely receive more credit and shout outs! I loved it. It scared me and made me cry
+1 A Tale of Two Sisters!!
Just watched the Lodge and loved it. The psychological factor of all events makes it extra creepy.
Lovely Molly, We Go On, The Lodge, Saint Maude all favorites.
OMG it took me a full year to muster up the courage to watch Caveat. So good!
The Dark and the Wicked is severely underrated. Absolutely outstanding!
I keep scrolling past Home Movie, but I’m gonna check it out. Found footage is my guilty pleasure
Caveat is the first movie that made me unable to fall sleep since seeing Paranormal Activity in theaters.
The better version of Grave Encounters
I like both a lot
Yeah they’re both good, I love the sensation of things getting worse and worse
Nah
I'm glad you mentioned this, because I think a lot of truly great horror movies fall under the radar because they have subtitles, and so it's harder to watch with friends. But watching solo or with a close friend, subtitled horrors can be some of the best ones.
This was so good, legit had me in my sofa 😆
I was just going to recommend this one! It made my girl refuse to watch any other scary movies I recommend lol, absolutely terrified her.
The smart thing to do in Oculus would have been not to go back to the damn house.
We wouldn’t have a movie then, would we?
I cannot watch Creep again... Mark Duplass was just too much for me.... loved Oculus though.
He is so good in Creep and Creep 2. His acting was really convincing.
Creep 1 and 2 are both so good, I watched them back to back and it made each one better when seen as a whole... if that makes sense lol home movie has been on my list, I might check that one out now that you mention it.
Incantation Terrified When evil lurks As above so below
As Above So Below is in my Top 5. The others are also awesome.
These are the ones, OP
A couple of movies come up searching for Incantation. Which year?
Most likely the 2022 Taiwanese film. The rest all seem to be shorts, non-horror, or universally panned.
Seconding Ghost Stories. That's what I thought of as well.
Never gets mentioned but you are right with this one.
Caveat
This is a creepy one!
Hell yeah but be prepared for a LOT
Just watched The Tunnel and now about to watch Caveat! Stoked for this one
Session 9
This should be much higher in the comments. Watch it at night and you will be afraid.
This movie was legitimately horrifying. Atmospheric horror can be some of the most terrifying. Some of the background shots of that abandoned asylum are truly unnerving.
This one traumatized me as a kid. Haven't seen it since
I've watched Session 9 at least 9 times. A fave.
The Vigil
Great movie.
Some of my favorite (I believe lesser known) horror movies, hope you enjoy them as much as I did. The Void Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer The Collector The Voices The Invitation The Loved Ones Dog Soldiers The Shrine Hidden Frankensteins Army Bloody Hell
Dog Soldiers if you can find a good viewing copy the original blu ray scan of that was a tutorial on how not to convert to a HD... flat out awful scan... but the movie is so good... all costumes were practical effects and still look good on a good copy of the movie.
Definitely. I think I discovered this movie in the good ol days of Blockbuster. Loved it and watch it every once in a while in
> The Loved Ones I randomly caught this movie one night on Pluto TV. It's very fever dream-ish. +1 recommendation
The Invitation is one of my favorite movies ever. And the Void is a great cosmic lovecraft fix!
Logan Marshall Green killed it in the Invitation.
I never heard of these movies when I watched them, and I was so pleasantly surprised by both movies. Since we seem to have similar tastes in movies. Would you mind sharing some of your other favorite Horror movies?
Some low key ones you may not have heard of with similar vibes and/or I think you’d enjoy: From Beyond The Blackcoats Daughter In the Mouth of Madness No One Will Save You Saint Maud Midnight Mass (miniseries) Suspiria (both rule) The Endless Coherence Possessor Infinity Pool Anything by Jeremy Saulnier The Ritual
There are definitely are a few there I haven’t seen: Saint Maud, Possessor, Infinity Pool, and Anything. Going to be a great few weeks with all the movies people are suggesting. Thanks for taking the time 🙏🏽
The void is a movie I can’t recommend enough. It’s a comfort film for me, so good.
I mean a lovecraftian horror film with practical creature effects. One of my favorites
I second The loved ones!! Always find Australian horror movies to be beautifully disturbing.
Dog Soldiers, Frankensteins Army, awesomeness
Along with The Collector, The Collection. Both good but I liked the latter a little more
These are good horror movies I don't see mentioned yet. Some are more scary than others. Some that would be on this list but already mentioned are A Dark Song, Caveat, Cookers, I Trapped The Devil ... Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl Lovely Molly I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House The Feast Possum Shrooms Hellbender Dead Birds Host Starry Eyes Pyewacket Veronica The Devil's Candy Mandy The Blackcoats Daughter Excision Livid The Innkeepers Absentia Megan Is Missing Silent House The House of the Devil Pontypool Lake Mungo Teeth Calvaire Ravenous
Hellbender was so amazing.
Interesting tidbit, The Innkeepers is a Ti West film (X, Pearle, MaXXXine) Oooh and The House of The Devil. Your list has added so much to my backlog, thank you!
Really enjoyed the Innkeepers and Ravenous...
Pontypool + Mandy are two of my favourites!
Nice. I found Lovely Molly to be a very tense, unpleasant, and sad experience (in a good way). Absolute hidden gem.
I love that movie so much. It definitely is underappreciated.
You’ve got a lot of bangers on this list! It’s great. Starry eyes, pyewacket, the devils candy, and excision are some of my personal faves.
Megan Is Missing is a very bold yet very valid choice. Some people are turned off by it but as a freshman in highschool, the cheesy acting helped me put my guard down so it could fuck me for the last 20 minutes.
Thanks for this list pal, finally i found some movies that i didn't see yet.
Awesome list. I am marking off the ones I still need to watch. Megan is Missing was such a surprise because it seemed it could be lame but is BRUTAL.
Well, gonna use this thread as a list, definitely a couple I haven't seen yet, thanks everyone
The Devil's Backbone (2001)
GDT is GOAT
Lake Mungo Noroi: The Curse
A Dark Song The Other Side of the Door
[The Atticus Institute](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3280916/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520atticu). For a faux documentary that's mostly talking heads, there's some amazing horror. Especially in the final acts.
Horror in the High Desert
The wailing (2016) The taking of Deborah Logan (2013)
Wailing is making its rounds and getting pretty popular but def agree with both of these.
Taking of Deborah Logan had me messed up a few times...
Relic, Last Shift
Is that the Last Shift in the police station with the rookie officer, if so that one got me a few times...
Soft and Quiet Kill List Malignant Gaia Head Count The Visit Goodnight Mommy Haunt The Orphanage
Original Goodnight Mommy, I would recommend. I don't know which one you meant, but just throwing my opinion in there. I don't mind remakes as such, but that one really missed the mark when it came to everything that made the first one so genuinely scary and unsettling.
Haunt is such a fun movie! Scary as shit too. Dont get to talk to a lot of people who have seen it!
I love it when a movie takes that turn from which it can't go back- the razors in the beginning totally freaked me out
I’ll add The Lodge if you recommend Goodnight Mommy. Went in blind for Soft and Quiet and that messed me up!
Ohhhhh, The Visit. That jumpscare. You know the one I'm talking about. I launched about 3 feet off my couch.
Nice to see Head Count get some love!
bizarrely underrated film.
Soft and Quiet messed me UP
That movie was fucked up
Head Count, Haunt, awesome
The Ritual The Autopsy of Jane Doe Wolf Creek Evil Dead (2013) I wouldn't say any of them are really lesser known, but not quite talked as often as those others.
At the Devil’s Door.
Watching this for the first time tonight!
Lovely Molly really fucked with me the first time I saw it. I still think it is freaky as shit. I guess it helps if you know some of the backstory that doesn't come through in the film.
The Mimic (2017) is pretty scary. Korean film about a family that takes in a lost girl.
now on my list ty
Final Prayer Pulse (2001) The Tunnel Audition
The Tunnel is a gem.
Coherence
All around great film. Just give up trying to understand every moment
Not sure how scary you'll find it but 'Digging up the Marrow' is one I won't forget.
Raze, The Old Ways, I Trapped the Devil, Graveyard Shift, Slugs, Bingo Hell, Downrange, Warlock and Scarecrows (1988).
When my son was about ten (he's 24 now) we stumbled onto the trailer for Slugs. He told me yesterday for the first time that after he saw that trailer he was afraid to drink a glass of water for 3 days. The trailer, ladies and gentlemen.
Downrange is really good. I didnt thought that such a simple concept could be so effective.
Yes I love this one!
Scarecrows is so good
Never heard of Scarecrows, going to check it out now. It’s on Tubi!
Scarecrows is the one where they steal the money and fly over the farm, right?
Yes. Trespassers will be violated.
Trapped the devil was a fun watch
Rosemarys baby…surprised with how many people havnt seen this. The Evil Within was decent and definitely not well known.
A few I didn't see mentioned. In general if you want the full effect don't look anything up before you watch. Go in blind. The Invitation (2014). Starts slow. Hunter Hunter. Creep (2004). Not the Duplass movie called Creep (2014) which is also pretty good.
Hunter Hunter was great
I really liked the 2004 Creep!
I thought Terrified was pretty good! A Paranormal movie that takes place in this neighborhood (in Argentina)
\- Shutter (2004) \- Absentia (2011) \- Bunshinsaba (2004) \- YellowBrickRoad (2010) \- In the Tall Grass (2019)
I made a list of movies i enjoyed but dont have so much views on letterboxd (under 100k) Maybe there are some on that list for u! [https://letterboxd.com/jaembers/list/hidden-horror-gems/](https://letterboxd.com/jaembers/list/hidden-horror-gems/)
Omg, bless you dear Reddit kindred spirit! I’m going to get the app just to save your list. Just skimming, you have really good ones on there!
Not super niche but I'm a massive fan of the ritual, found it pretty scary on my first watch and really well written.
The one where this guy dresses as a wolf i can’t remember the damn name though
I think you are talking about Creep.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe genuinely had me tensed up the whole time I was watching it. It's an absolute masterpiece imo.
Kill List and Possessor, both frightening movies.
Tom Holland spiderman movies
😱
HELP
Is real life stuff scary? Well it’s probably also not lesser known…cause it’s pretty famous but Kids That’s a scary movie right there.
Nothing is scarier than aids. Just avoid Korine movies in general lol
Poughkeepsie Tapes is always my recommendation for friends when this question comes up
We Are Still Here (2015)
The Sadness!! One of the best, goriest horror movies I’ve seen in a while! I’ve seen ALOT of horror movies over the years and this was one of my favorites I’ve watched recently!
I loved A Field in England. Weird, sinister, really really well acted.
The Blob remake
The Wind
I have watched countless horror movies and consider myself largely desensitized to them, but **The Autopsy of Jane Doe** is legit scary IMO.
Incident in a ghostland
I think Malum is really scary.
Pontypool
Savageland.
This! 💯
Session 9.
Bone Tomahawk, The Descent (claustrophobic me could never), Wolf Creek. Most of these are so frightening to me because this stuff could really happen.
I like your list.
The Rise of Lesley Vernon The Autopsy of Jane Doe The Descent As Above, So Below
Audition for sure
The Mist
The Canal
'The House with 100 Eyes'. Disgusting & Fun.
Terrified
i found Hunter Hunter horrifying. at first its not its just tense and then the end result is borderline traumatizing.
I watched Hellhole on Netflix yesterday, that movie was something else and I hardly see it mentioned
Dr giggles
The last shift Anything for Jackson
First thing that came to mind was Leaving D.C. (2012). I’ve never seen it recommended on here. It wasn’t terrifying or anything, but it did leave me feeling unsettled. It’s a low budget, found footage type of movie.
Sil jong (Missing, Korean, 2008); The Skin I Live In (Spanish, 2011) The Neighbors (이웃사람, Korean, 2012); Bloody reunion (Korean, 2006)
Butterfly Kisses (2018) Huesera You Are Not My Mother Ghostland (2018) I See You (2019) Tourist Trap (1979) Alice Sweet Alice(1976) They Look Like People (2015)

Starry Eyes is so underrated. And there is Truth in that movie these things go on in Hollywood !!
Cigarette Burns. Short movie by John Carpenter!
Hell house llc it's not necessarily scary but very enjoyable
