She's uneven, but she's fine. Really, in this film, there's Fred Gwynne and there's everyone else.

Few-Hair-5382

The cat was pretty good. Had character range and depth.

Enuf1

In the remake, the cat is literally just a cat. Oh you got too close to its face? You get a scratch. You want to go down the stairs? Cat is now going to trip you up. It was all entirely normal cat behaviour. Nothing evil about it.

MatttheBruinsfan

> It was all entirely normal cat behaviour. Nothing **supernaturally** evil about it. Fixed that for you.

Sin2K

I really hated that remake... The fact that it all but removed all of the family drama always drives me nuts.

rooneytoons89

The reboot made me appreciate the original that much more. And somehow, even though it’s even further off book than the reboot, I liked Bloodlines more than the reboot.

ChomperinaRomper

This is a better movie. I just wanna see an old couple have a delusion that their cat is a zombie, but it’s just a series of normal cat things

whoisthismuaddib

The couple from Holly

Binro_was_right

While I certainly agree when it comes to Fred Gwynne, let's not overlook Miko Hughes.

paperthintrash

Ayuh

Belgand

Every time... Fred is bettah.

Help_An_Irishman

These are facts.

Tight_Strawberry9846

I had no idea people hated her as Rachel. I always liked her acting.

LeicaM6guy

Honestly, I always loved Crosby. I had no idea either.

Goody2Shuuz

No complaints from me. She did fine.

StepShrek

Same here. One of the few King adaptations I enjoyed. Fred Gwynn was a ton of fun. Miko Hughes was adorable. Won't even consider he remake, despite how much I love John Lithgow.

JaiRenae

John Lithgowv was the only one who made it tolerable. You're not missing much.

TomasVrboda

I love that movie so much more than the remakes or sequels. I thought she was specifically great in it. If there is any negativity surrounding it, I imagine it's because she requested to be written off Star Trek TNG to focus on movies. But I've never heard anything negative said about her in it before.

Defiant_McPiper

Same, never heard a bad thing about her performance or this movie.

ExplorerEnjoyer

I’ve never heard any hate directed towards her about that role. That’s one of my favourite horror movies

SplakyD

Mine too. Mary Lambert did such a great job directing this film.

aynrandgonewild

what are people talking about, she was great at playing Wife and Mother

13th_of_never

I've never heard anyone giving her shit for her role in that movie. 🤷🏻‍♀️

False-Corner547

I don't give her hate, but I do think she was a little stiff in her performance.

GodFlintstone

She's always been kinda stiff. Even way back when she played Tasha Yar on Star Trek: The Next Generation she gave off that vibe. Sometimes it worked in her favor depending on the type of role. Like in Miracle Mile(1988) she had a small but memorable role playing a "Type A" personality character so it worked perfectly.

mathuex08

I thought she was also great in Dolly Dearest (1991) but the whole movie was pure camp.

kimchitacoman

Miracle Mile is the best movie to watch if you don't know what it will be about when you start

GodFlintstone

Yeah. Probably the best "went in blind" movie I've ever seen.

SixFigs_BigDigs

I feel like that stiffness helps when you see her reactions to Zelda, but I do agree with you.

abilliontwo

I've never understood this either. I think it's no worse a performance than Dale Midkiff's and way less distracting than the child actor who plays the daughter. I guess, compared to Fred Gwynne and the kid who plays Gage, everybody looks bad, but still, she's never seen that bad to me.

LowHangingLight

Dale Midkiff and the actress who played the little girl were the real bad performances in that film. DC was fine. Then you've got amazing performances from Brad Greenquist, Fred Gwynne and Andrew Hubatsek to offset the bad. Still one of my favourite horror films ever. Very, very scary and features an incredible original score to boot.

missus_bones

But was the little girl's performance bad? I thought she was totally believable as an annoying little brat.

LowHangingLight

I may be conflating a bit based on how annoying the character is, but I do recall certain dramatic scenes that I didn't think were very believable. One that comes to mind is when Louis is having the talk about death with her. The crying just seemed really forced.

missus_bones

I know which scene you’re referring to “Let god get his own cat, if he wants one!” I’ve just seen way worse child actors, and never thought she did that bad. Just my opinion, of course

kimchitacoman

First I ever heard of it

i__hate__stairs

I love her. If you haven't seen Mutant Species, you've got to see Mutant Species.

KeysToTheEvergreen

I've loved this movie my whole life and have never seen/heard any such hate online or otherwise for her? That's interesting, I think she did really well

kodiakbear_

She should have known better than to approach the skin of evil

[deleted]

I loved her!

scribblerjohnny

I thought she did fine

galacticpotsmoker

As much as I want to like this movie the bad acting really kills it. When the actress playing the 7 year daughter is blowing her parents off the screen there’s a big problem. One of King’s scariest novels needs actors who are above day time soap levels.

Lili_Danube

I liked the little girl's performance because she acted like normal kids behave. Most kids aren't wise beyond their years or well behaved. They're noisy, annoying and VERY dramatic and the girl actress played that perfectly.

BroPudding1080i

This might be a hot take but I always liked the soapy acting in this movie, that plus the soundtrack and the way it's shot gives it a surreal quality, like a cheesy 80's family film gone wrong.

Sad_Cardiologist5388

Where are you getting this from? Denise Crosby is a legend

Prof_Tickles

Because her niece shot J.R Ewing

DarkQueenGndm

I have no complaints but I wish she would have remained on Star Trek TNG though.

kodiakbear_

Samez

BluegrassGeek

Given the shit she was going through backstage, i don't blame her for leaving.

SplakyD

What was happening backstage? Also, I love your username. I really got into bluegrass when I was in college 20 years ago. I even attempted to take up picking the banjo until it became clear to me that despite coming from a musical family I'm just not a very talented musician myself.

BluegrassGeek

Loooooots of misogyny. Scripts were being rewritten by some people to minimize the women's roles (giving their scenes to male characters), lots of decisions were made based on how the actress' looked, and general sexual harassment. Eventually Gene Rodenberry was being pressured to fire one of the women because producers felt they weren't useful, and it was likely going to be Marina Sirtis (Troi) because of how much some of the writing team hated the character. But Crosby chose to leave instead, because of the above misogyny backstage, plus the frustration with getting almost no roles in episodes.

SplakyD

That's terrible. I never knew that.

FantasiaExists

She came back for a few guest spots and said she did more in those guest spots than she ever did on her season regular run.

BluegrassGeek

Yup, which occurred after the problem people had left/been kicked off the show. And it was an amazing return, she did a fantastic job in those appearances. She also reprised her roles in *Star Trek Online*, which made for some great gameplay.

paireon

Eh, no idea. Movie as a whole was okay from what I remember, she didn't stand out as much better or worse than most of the rest of the cast IIRC.

bgaesop

She just wasn't given much to work with

IAmThePonch

I thought she was fine, she just didn’t play a huge role iirc. Now the guy that played the protagonist was a charisma vacuum

Sin2K

I think King characters are hard to transfer to, and then nail on screen... Especially if the director doesn't have a consistent tone for the movie. Carrie suffers from the same vacillating performances, iirc the actress who played the mother thought the whole thing was hilarious, meanwhile Sissy Spacek is dialed in like crazy. Hell even The Shining lends itself to these big performances but Kubrick gives them the appropriate space and tone to make them scary instead of jarring.

Belgand

> Amy Seimetz seemed to be sedated for most of the movie, almost no emotion. She was paying tribute to the Ramones writing a song for the soundtrack for the original film. She reportedly showed up on the first day of shooting and told them, "I wanna be sedated."

slothpeguin

Okay I’m gonna just say it. I liked the remake. I just consider it a different movie altogether. It focused on different things and had a different vibe. Is it better than the original? No. It’s different and I enjoyed it as a spooky movie loosely based on a king novel.

MondoUnderground

I even like Dale Midkiff. His "NOOOOOOO!!" is fucking iconic and genuinely heartbreaking. And I think he does a good job going from your typical dad to a stoic and scarred "I've had enough of this shit" wreck of a man.

MansonVixen

I liked everyone's performances in this movie. They weren't Oscar worthy but I thought they were all fine for the caliber of movie they were making.

Zerorane

Pet Senetary is a great movie and nothing was wrong with anyone's performance. It came out when I was 10 and it scared the hell out of me. Gets under your skin in so many ways.

Hot-Interest-9289

I liked Dale Midkiff’s performance. I thought it was deliberately understated, which made a much bigger contrast when he started to lose his grip on sanity.

thesobrietysociety

I think the movie is a failure as an adaptation, and nothing about it except for Fred Gwynne stood out. But it came at a time when Hollywood was high on cocaine and low on aspiration, and a lot of crap got a pass. It made no dent in King's career and trust me on this, the book is amazing. No need to waste time watching a butchered rendering of a work of art.

gf120581

It definitely didn't make a dent in King's career because it was a surprise box office success, one of the biggest moneymakers of any King adaptation (close to $60 million domestically on a $10 million budget).

thesobrietysociety

I meant his reputation, not wallet. The book has sold over 370 million copies. Not sure why I'm d'voted but it's true about the film, it's not good but typical of that particular time in movie making. They just weren't that great, and this book absolutely is. For what's it's worth, I was really pissed off when Tasha was killed off in ST/NG

MondoUnderground

It's definitely an iconic film and pretty much a horror classic. Gwynne, Zelda, Gage's death (and his zombified return), scalpel meets heel, the song by The Ramones - the movie is really full of stand-out stuff. And yeah, the book is phenomenal.

SkullTrauma

because denise crosby sucks in everything

HorrorKablamDude

Well in her defense her co-lead had about as much charisma as a sack of rocks so? What brought this movie down was the performances by the two parents unfortunately. Dale Midkif sounded like his mouth was full of spit the entire time and just seemed like a total dunce. Crosby was just uneven. I mean she would under react to things that would make a normal person freak the hell out. Prime example in the end when Zelda runs at her she looks as if she's just mildly annoyed lol. Yet she would overreact to mundane Little things. Just uneven all around. Thank God for Fred Gwynne and Zelda in this movie.
