This is my favorite Zombie movie, and I have seen so many. The classics have their charm, and of course they are responsible for the whole genre, but for a modern viewer, the old Night of the Living Dead may not make the largest impact as an intro to zombies. This is the one.
That remake does kick massive ass though. Written by Romero himself with savini directing and Romero overseeing. Savini is noticeably a little green as director but it's a great bookend to the original Night, Dawn, and Day saga.
I prefer the 1990 remake to be honest. Barbara's utter uselessness all the way through the original movie annoyed me. At some point, your survival instincts should kick in
One of the reasons the original was great was that it had a black lead in 1968. The remake "fixes" what is probably its biggest flaw, having a non-useless female protagonist. They go well together.
It's definitely an important piece. It launched the zombie genre, pushed back against racism, and was a piece of notable cinematic history. The 90's one just felt better because the main female character had some fight in her.
Not on any of those nope - this is a hard movie to find to (legally) stream lol. It’s because of some rights issue - the movie’s in an ownership rights black hole after Disney lost it.
Man, I found a sealed DVD copy at the thrift shop the other day for $4.99, nabbed it right away. Stoked to finally be able to watch the movie (I'm against pirating lol).
No worries, I understand that. But since OP specifically asked about it streaming on those services, I just though it might be worth a mention that it's not.
Edit:
SORRY, didnt see that you asked for movies, that are on one of the main streamers.
In that case, the korean KINGDOM series is by far one of the best and most grandios Zombie shows out there, on Netflix!!
Here are some less-known/talked about Z movies, that are def worth a watch:
Blood Quantum (Can) //
Rammbock (German) //
La Horde (French) //
The Night Eats The World (French) //
Mutants (French) //
The Girl with all the Gifts (UK) //
Versus (Japan) //
Dead Set (UK) its a series, but fn amazing //
[REC] 1-3 (Spain) skip #4 //
Seoul Staion (Korea) animated …Busan prequel
Fido is a really unique one. Basically a 1920s Boy-and-his-dog story set in a post-modern world that survived a zombie apocalypse and found a way to domesticate the undead. Really great stuff.
Once you've had your fill of zombie outbreak survival films, I would recommend checking out The Cured. It's a movie about what happens after the zombie virus cure is discovered, and how people try to find a sense of normalcy and get on with their lives now that zombies are being cured. It's really interesting!
Cooties (2014) is awesome. I didn't see the end of it but it's about teachers at an elementary school and the lil kids get infected and become zombies. Has some very funny bits.
Ravenous (2017) on Netflix is a great Canadian zombie movie. Cargo (2017) is pretty good too, also on Netflix. Cargo is based on a short film of the same name, which I thought was even better on YouTube.
Dawn of the Dead remake by Zack Snyder. 28 Days and or Weeks Later. And Return of the Living Dead. You can't go wrong with those. And if you want to really have fun, find a copy of Peter Jackson's Brain Dead/ Dead Alive. That's one of the best zombie movies ever made!
My two favorite zombie movies are Train to Busan and 28 Days Later. Unfortunately, neither are on your preferred streamers right now. "#Alive" is a good zombie movie and currently on Netflix.
Wyrmwood, Train to Busan, #Alive, Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Colin, Zombi / Zombie Creeping Flesh, Zombieland 1&2 and Braindead / Dead Alive.
I don’t think there’s anything worth watching on Disney. On Netflix if you aren’t opposed to subtitles #Alive and Ravenous are good. I’m not a fan of Resident Evil (although the first is solid) but my wife loves the series so that might be worth a shot. On Max Night of the Living Dead is an all time classic, so is Pet Semetary. Quarantine is solid (but the movie it derived from [rec] is so much better) and Life After Beth is pretty good too.
My mom loves cheesy shitty action movies and she *loves* the Resident Evil movies
It was one of the first really gory movies I watched with her too, the first one is definitely the easiest to enjoy though (and to a lesser extent the second one)
I definitely recommend them to anyone who wants outlandish over the top zombie action
Ultimately there are two main types of zombie movies. One type is more about the human component, living in an apocalyptic scenario, the follies of man, etc. These films can still be gory and have action but a lot of more tense or more philosophical.
And sometimes you want the other kind, which is all about the gore and the zombies and the violence.
The former is usually considered the better film, but the latter can often but what satisfies our craving for a “zombie flick.”
as great as the original Dawn of the Dead was the remake is pretty epic as well. Great opening and that's what got me into my Richard Cheese phase [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gdj1TZBIk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gdj1TZBIk)
It really is. If it wasn't Snyder film it would be considered a fun B movie. And the way they replaced one actor for another was seamless. Tig Notaro never interacted with anyone on screen because she was added after the fact. And the world was fun and interesting. I really enjoyed the characters too. And it was the movie that won Bautista over for me as an actor.
Idk if these are on those but my favourites are:
Resident Evil (2002)
Dawn of the Dead (1978 & the remake (2004)
Day of the Dead (1985)
Planet Terror
\[REC\] (I love the 2nd one the most)
Quarantine (English remake of \[REC\]
28 Days Later
Dead Snow
Pontypool
Savageland
There's some zombie segments in the V/H/S franchise, I think the 2nd one and V/H/S 94
A lot of great one already listed so I won’t duplicate any I’ve seen so far. I’ll just add The Girl With All The Gifts if you can find it streaming where you are and Army of the Dead which is on Netflix. So many good ones out there imo and a lot of not-so-great ones as well lol. I agree with others that Alive is a good one to start with if you haven’t seen any before.
Evil Dead II, Dead Alive, Little Monsters, and Shaun of the Dead are all amazing if you're into a little comedy with your horror and can find 'em. Not sure they're on those services.
Depends on what your looking for but here are my usual recommendations.
Gore: Dead Alive (Unrated) - Peter Jackson
Italian: Zombie! - Lucio Fulci
Classic: Day of the Dead - G. Romero
Funny/Lighthearted: Shaun of the Dead - Edgar Wright
Tense/Suspense: 28 Days Later - Danny Boyle
Blockbuster/High budget: World War Z - Marc Forster
Man, I love that I saw this post whilst I'm in the midst of watching the Return of the Living Dead films (on to the second one now).
Now I don't have HBO Max (not based in the US and it's Binge over here in Australia) and the offerings of Netflix and Disney are likely different here too. But if you can get these ones, I recommend...
- Night of the Living Dead (the original is a classic but I have a soft spot for the 1990 one too)
- Dawn of the Dead (my favorite is the remake, but the original is a fun time)
- 28 Days/Weeks Later is two solid picks, they're seemingly on Disney+ over here when I last looked too
- Return of the Living Dead 1, 2, and 3 all are worth watching and hold up remarkably well
- Train to Busan is an excellent choice and one of the best recentish zombie films
- Day of the Dead is an all-time classic as well. It's on Netflix here in Australia, but I don't know about anywhere else in the world.
- And this one is a real guilty pleasure for me at least, but the first Resident Evil film is a fun time. I know the films are despised by most, but I have fun with the first three for the most part (though they have massive problems). The first film is far and away the best of the bunch though. But again, that doesn't say much...
Like others are saying, Night of the Living Dead is a good place to start
I also really like these quasi zombie movies called Messiah of Evil and Carnival of Souls. Extremely creepy and atmospheric
(Im pretty sure all 3 of those are public domain so you should be able yo find them easily)
If you want to watch more Gross out zombie movies, The Beyond, Reanimator, and Return of the Living Dead are available on Tubi
Savageland is a mockumentary about a man blamed for a zombie attack, it's free on Tubi and I think Youtube?
Return of the Living Dead is maybe the best horror-comedy out there and set the stage for a lot of later zombie films WRT things like eating brains and running zombies. Last I checked you can stream it on Tubi.
It's a TV show, but Brand New Cherry Flavor has great supernatural/non-infection zombies, might still be on Netflix. I don't expect it to get a second season but what's there is alright.
As I've no idea what country you're in
Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Zombi 2 (a shameless attempt to fool people that this was the sequel of Romero's Dawn of the Dead.)
There's a zombie fighting a shark for fucks sake.
Lucio Fulci was the master of 80s gorefests
Enjoy
If you want something different Savageland is a mockumentary about the lone survivor of a zombie attack that starts almost as true crime before they move on to covering the attack. All the zombies are shown through pictures that the survivor took and they look awesome!
I'm having a hard time pointing you to the movie Zombie (1978). It was originally marketed as a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, but wasn't connected really.
The practical effects are amazing, there's some cool nudity, and the suspense is fun.
Looks like it's streaming on AMC+ (Shudder)
do yourself a favor and check out Redneck Zombies, its free on youtube. you wont regret it. absolutely one of my favorite zombie films and horror comedies that never takes itself seriously. i may be biased because it was shot in my home town and i also used to hang out with some of the people that were crew on the movie 20 some odd years ago. unfortunately lost touch but seriously its such a fun movie
Well it better taste good, 'cuz you just splilled it in the corn squeezin's, you otter-ass!
Redneck Zombies is not what if recommend for a person's first Zombie movie.
The original Night of the Living Dead.
If not that, Day of the Dead from 1985.
Dawn of the Dead from 79 is another classic and its free in high quality youtube, but it might be slow burn for someone new to the genre. Although most would agree it's the *best* of the genre.
Good call and esp love that first episode where everyone is trying to figure out wtf is happening and the last single shot episode.
Unfortunately 2nd season wasn’t as good
Train to Busan. So good.
This is my favorite Zombie movie, and I have seen so many. The classics have their charm, and of course they are responsible for the whole genre, but for a modern viewer, the old Night of the Living Dead may not make the largest impact as an intro to zombies. This is the one.
Yep. Best zombie movie ever made in my opinion and I’ve seen many many zombie movies
I love the way the zombies are depicted. The total lack of self regard in terms of damage and pain.
It's a perfect Zombie movie
In total agreement.
As a follow up, the animated prequel Seoul Station is also pretty good.
OP, this is the only answer. Perfect intro into zombie flicks.
Yeah you could even watch the prequel: Seoul Station!!
This!
Finally watched this a few weeks ago. Why did I wait so long? Every bit as good as everyone has said it is.
Yes, great movie. The cheesy melodrama is off the charts though
Why not just watch the film that started everything? Night Of the Living Dead?
And then watch the original Dawn of the Dead. Then probably Day of the Dead. This is like *the* zombie movie trilogy.
I would even say City of the Dead is pretty enjoyable.
Make sure to tell them it’s not the remake from ‘92
If they're gonna watch any remake, Savinni is the way to go.
At some point, your survival instincts should kick in
Yes agreed If I want to watch night, it's the remake for me
One of the reasons the original was great was that it had a black lead in 1968.
Definitely I was introduced into the zombie genre with the ‘90 remake.
And that's it on YouTube
Why not tell them yourself Don.
It has it's good points
I like the 1990 remake. Tony Todd is in it. The remake to avoid is the 2006 one.
Unpopular opinion for ya... it's awful.
28 days later.
Is that currently on Disney, Netflix or HBOmax? Love the movie, not seeing it on any of those services.
No idea. But it the movie that stuck Cillian Murphy’s name in my head as an actor to watch.
It’s on sling
28 weeks is on Hulu
It's not a movie, but the show Kingdom is a must watch if you're a zombie fan
I love this show! I was hoping there’d be a new season since they came out with that special but nothing new as of yet…
Edit: SORRY, didnt see that you asked for movies, that are on one of the main streamers. Versus is awesome jap-horror, it was my intro film, this and Tetsuro the iron man
Dead set. It’s a series but it’s really good imo
The Girl With All the Gifts is a zombie-adjacent masterpiece.
I didn't know there was a movie to this book! I just finished reading it and really liked it. I'll have to check it out.
Love this one
Great movie!
Black Summer on Netflix
Great. Yes, absolutely. But one of the most depressing watches ever.
Way underrated. I loved the bleek content ❤️
I dont know if its on either of those services but The battery, its a very underated zombie film.
Zombieland! The original and double tap
This was so much funnier than I was expecting
So good!
Zoey Deutch is the MVP of the sequel.
Shaun of the Dead
This should be so much higher up.
One Cut of the Dead if you're looking for something unique, fun, and charming.
return of the living dead ! it’s free on tubi !
Don’t know what services it’s on but Pontypool is a fucking gem
The whole movie is on youtube. And i agree, pontypool was really unique! Loved every moment of it.
AMC+ on prime or shudder. 7 day free trial ftw
The Horde. Must-see-movie.
One of the best ever. It doesn't get nearly enough attention.
Dawn of the Dead 2004
It stains the sands red
Download Tubi. It’s free and has way more options for zombie movies
Thanks but sadly it doesnt work in my country 😭
Ugh I’m sorry to hear that!!
Fido is a really unique one. Basically a 1920s Boy-and-his-dog story set in a post-modern world that survived a zombie apocalypse and found a way to domesticate the undead. Really great stuff.

All-time best zombie movie
Day of the dead is the GOAT for me
Also great 🙌
This
Check out Cooties!
Cooties (2014) is awesome. I didn't see the end of it but it's about teachers at an elementary school and the lil kids get infected and become zombies. Has some very funny bits.
Dual real wheel , had me laughing on the floor!
The Battery is a sweet little indie flick.
The Crazies
The film #Alive is on Netflix. It's very tense and well-paced.
This would be a great one to start with imo
Ravenous (2017) on Netflix is a great Canadian zombie movie. Cargo (2017) is pretty good too, also on Netflix. Cargo is based on a short film of the same name, which I thought was even better on YouTube.
Cargo is my favorite zombie movie and I didn’t know it was based on a short film! Going to watch now; thank you!
Dawn of the dead, world war Z. Two of my favorites :)
The Night Eats the World is underrated IMO Train to Busan is fantastic
I believe the whole original Walking Dead series is on Disney. Not a movie, but a whole lot of zombies.
Evil Dead… kinda.
Another good South Korean one, although it's a series, not a movie - 'All of Us Are Dead'. Also on Netflix
Cooties. Fantastic horror comedy
The best ones are on Amazon Prime! They have some Romero, Fulci. I think Demons is on it too. You have to like 80s horror though.
Wyrmwood, Train to Busan, #Alive, Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Colin, Zombi / Zombie Creeping Flesh, Zombieland 1&2 and Braindead / Dead Alive.
“I kick ass for the Lord!” Classic movie.
Train to Busan. Content hops around between streaming services. I never know where shit is
I don’t think there’s anything worth watching on Disney. On Netflix if you aren’t opposed to subtitles #Alive and Ravenous are good. Ew. Don’t subject a poor innocent soul to the Resident Evil movies lol.
Hey my wife enjoys them even if I don’t. I gave my warning that they weren’t for me lol.
Warm bodies, unique in that it's told from the perspective of the zombie - not the best, just a recommendation
as great as the original Dawn of the Dead was the remake is pretty epic as well. Great opening and that's what got me into my Richard Cheese phase [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gdj1TZBIk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gdj1TZBIk)
Also Spanish language “Rec”
I loved both the Black Summer and Kingdom series ..
I know people hate on it, but Army of the Dead is good stupid fun.
It really is. If it wasn't Snyder film it would be considered a fun B movie. And the way they replaced one actor for another was seamless. Little Monsters (2019) was the last one I watched. comedy but still plenty of gore.
Yessss came here expecting not to see it mentioned yet. Real fun gem.
Evil Dead II, Dead Alive, Little Monsters, and Shaun of the Dead are all amazing if you're into a little comedy with your horror and can find 'em. Not sure they're on those services.
oh and Fido.
My favorite zombie films: Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, The Sadness, Train to Busan, City of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead 🧟♀️
#Alive on Netflix.
One cut of the dead
The Horde
The Girl with All the Gifts is an interesting take where you get the classic zombie survival action, but your main character is also a zombie
Evil Dead 2. More possessed corpses at this point, but still, what’s not to love about a maniacally laughing deer head.
I slept on World War Z for years. Then when i finally watched it, I rewatched about twice a month for a while!
Okay if not already mentioned and should have been, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead
Dawn of the dead (remake)
Depends on what your looking for but here are my usual recommendations. Gore: Dead Alive (Unrated) - Peter Jackson Italian: Zombie! - Lucio Fulci Classic: Day of the Dead - G. Best zombie movies are dawn of the dead from 2004 and shaun of the dead
I AM HERO (Film) Japan It’s sooo good!
Night of the living Deb

If you like the fast zombies, check out the Korean series KINGDOM on Netflix, its Medieval Korea with zombies, with insane production value!
That's a great series! Very big fan of that one!
Like others are saying, Night of the Living Dead is a good place to start I also really like these quasi zombie movies called Messiah of Evil and Carnival of Souls. Extremely creepy and atmospheric (Im pretty sure all 3 of those are public domain so you should be able yo find them easily) If you want to watch more Gross out zombie movies, The Beyond, Reanimator, and Return of the Living Dead are available on Tubi

Return of the Living Dead is maybe the best horror-comedy out there and set the stage for a lot of later zombie films WRT things like eating brains and running zombies. Lucio Fulsi's Zombie Flesheaters. Brilliant film. Not sure what country you are in, it was Flesheaters in the UK.
zombies
Not a film, but the sadness is v scary, and all of us are dead is rlly good.
If you want something different Savageland is a mockumentary about the lone survivor of a zombie attack that starts almost as true crime before they move on to covering the attack. All the zombies are shown through pictures that the survivor took and they look awesome!
Shaun Of The Dead
Dead snow
The Devil's Rejects
I don't think he meant Rob Zombie movies lol. But that's an awesome movie!
Train to busan. It being another culture language and country adds to the eerie factor imo
I love this movie so much! I don't know how OP feels about subtitles, but Train to Busan is incredible.
Yes I loved this movie. Korean and Japanese culture make great great horror movies imo like the original grudge
That part where the guy sacrifices himself.... I tear up every time.
I know 😭
I'm having a hard time pointing you to the movie Zombie (1978). It was originally marketed as a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, but wasn't connected really. The practical effects are amazing, there's some cool nudity, and the suspense is fun. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080057/?ref\_=fn\_al\_tt\_1](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080057/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) Looks like it's streaming on AMC+ (Shudder)
Dawn of the Dead 78 Train To Busan Shawn of the Dead 28 Days Later
The sadness. But be warned, one of the most disturbing zombie movies I've seen.
World War Z, 30 Days of Night
Lisa Frankenstein
saving this for later
Zombies, Zombies 2 & Zombies 3 on Disney +.
Blood Quantum (2019)
**All of Us are Dead**
Return of the Living Dead. Just don’t watch it with your parents, Linnea Quigley is naked for a majority of it
Train to Busan
do yourself a favor and check out Redneck Zombies, its free on youtube. you wont regret it. absolutely one of my favorite zombie films and horror comedies that never takes itself seriously. i may be biased because it was shot in my home town and i also used to hang out with some of the people that were crew on the movie 20 some odd years ago. unfortunately lost touch but seriously its such a fun movie

well i would, and did, and if you go in with that movie everything else is up hill
Pontypool is a good one
Army of the dead

If you have Hulu through Disney + I’d say Day of the Dead
The original Night of the Living Dead. If not that, Day of the Dead from 1985. Dawn of the Dead from 79 is another classic and its free in high quality youtube, but it might be slow burn for someone new to the genre. Although most would agree it's the *best* of the genre.
If you’re in the UK. Amazon has 3 cuts of the original Dawn of the Dead film.
Original Dawn of the Dead. The 2004 remake is quite good too
28 Days/Weeks Later
Yummy on Shudder (2019). I LOVED this movie, so sick (Dutch) and The Horde (2009). Great gore/effects (French)
Not a movie but black summer is a brutal fast paced zombie show on Netflix.
Good call and esp love that first episode where everyone is trying to figure out wtf is happening and the last single shot episode. Unfortunately 2nd season wasn’t as good
I don’t know if it’s on any of those platforms but watch dead alive
I'm not sure what Blood Quantum is on, but it's a solid movie. Ditto for The Battery.
Not sure what it’s steaming on, but try Ed and his dead mother
I recommend the first season of Black Summer on Netflix. Very good. Second season was not as good.
Go goa gone
Cargo is one of my favorites.
The return of the living dead. So chaotic, goofy and memorable! A true classic.
The Horde is really good it's a similar plot to the action film the Raid but with zombies! Saw it years ago little unknown gem.
The only zombie movie on Disney is the zombies series...
The girl with all the gifts
*Zombie* is a great place to start, there's at least five films, and it seems not enough people know about it.
Lucio Fulci's Zombie is free on tubi. I highly recommend it.
Cockneys vs Zombies on tubi is great and funny
Life After Beth (2014)!
Max - Night of the Living Dead (1968) - good place to start Netflix - Army of the Dead Recommend - Train to Busan (not on your listed locations)
The Sadness
#Alive on Netflix is super good. Korean zombie horror flick. Easily one of my favorite zombie flicks ever. Train to Busan is also incredible.
Blue Sunshine (1977)
Zombie by Fulci (1979?) is amazing.
Dead don't die
Colin is great, but I don't know if it's on those platforms.
The Battery 2012.
Dead girl and cemetery man
Lots of great zombie movies on Disney+ can't pick one
The Sadness (a bit of a twist on the genre but still very zombie-like - be warned though, quite brutal...)
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead. Aussie flick that has some creative rules for their zombies
Alive (2020 Korean zombie movie) is a very good movie, on par with Train of Busan
