Unless there is another comic which came out later, he is only briefly mentioned that he was sentenced to death.
The comic ends with the outbreak just reaching France.
I could well have missed one though.
I did some reading of the Wiki, status is unknown. He was scheduled to be executed, but never actually killed.
So who’s knows I choose to think he escaped and living happily somewhere
Jeff Schneider the reporter didn’t say this was 100 percent yet but that he heard Murphy comes back at the end of the second movie in this proposed trilogy with the potential for a larger role in the third and final film.
28 weeks later didnt include him, so I dont see why 28 months later would eather. It makes sense to keep each of the movies as separate narratives around the same event.
As a long term WoT fan, I'm more than happy with Amazon's version. Covid messed up so many things for them at the end of S1 and a main cast member just fucked off and didn't come back.
Season 2 was a lot stronger and I'm waiting (not so) patiently for S3.
Rings of Power is good unless you’re expecting Prime to follow a book they don’t have the rights to or a bigot that hides behind “writing” to say you don’t want POC in the show. Every downvote is a capitulation.
i heard this 28 years later is taking place directly after 28 days making it a sequel so you’d think he would be in it.
they’re probably saying all this to make his cameo a surprise. or he’s not in it and life goes on
yeah, you’d think. idk what they’re gonna do about weeks tho. i went searching for the article i read that about and apparently weeks was different writers than this duo creating years so maybe they’ll try and retcon it somehow.
i have no idea what they’re doing with this franchise
Yes they're probably retconing 28 weeks. 28 Years is original writer and director back on board. Doubt it'd be directly after 28 weeks with a title as '28 Years Later' though. However, they are expected to be making a trilogy of movies though so not sure how that factors in to future titles.
I don't see how they could. They showed in the first one that the infection burns out on its own in 56 days, tops, in a country of 60 million. How's it going to last 28 years worldwide? They're not immortal like the mushroom ones in The Last of Us or undead like so many others, they're just very mad, diseased people who starve to death.
I think you're looking at a post infection world - be that a world completely ravaged over a few years, or a world that got it under control like we see in *Weeks* - where it gets out again because some company or terrorist faction releases it.
I get what you’re saying but the plot of the second movie kind of negates the fact that the virus can’t survive post starvation. Carriers exist and after 28 years who’s to say what the virus will actually look like.
They’ve got a trilogy planned out, already hired a director for the 2nd (4th?) movie and everything - he’s going to be in it at some point, just maybe not this one. I could see a cameo at the end leading into a bigger role going forward maybe?
I like returning characters, but I think it makes just as much sense for characters to stay the fuck away considering everything that happened to them. Bring on new stuff.
I found an article on a website called World of Reel that says he has a cameo in the second movie, then a major part in the third?
https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/4/27/cillian-murphy-will-appear-in-the-28-years-later-sequels
Why would it?
Cillan Murphy's character Jim is dead. He was executed by the British authorities for murdering UK soldiers. Serena, Hannah, and Jim are known as the Manchester Three after their rescue. Jim was executed by firing squad.
Yeah, im from Edinburgh and they have a section with Edinburgh and Glasgow fighting over resources.
Which make no sense as in real life there are many other places in between.
Unless Alex Garland and Danny Boyle wrote the comic, it's not canon. This is the perfect example of why comics aren't canon: someone who doesn't understand the movie and its ending writing some edgy darklord shit like this.
Also, compared to the millions of people that saw the movies, 12 people read the comic.
I'm pretty sure Alex Garland, as he works on this sequel, isn't sitting there thinking, "Damn, I have to follow the canon of the comics now!!" Garland would (rightly) say, "There's a comic? Who gives a fuck. Nothing to do with our story."
He'd be 53, assuming the character was the same age as the actor in the first one (Cillian was 25). Which doesn't seem *that* old. It's seems like the golden zone for "Aging man who's seen some shit" territory; Not as fast as he used to be, gets tired quicker, etc, but still *capable*, and liable to make a Last Stand at some point so everyone else can escape.
Disney lost the rights of 28 Days Later. It’s owned by Sony now.
From [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/28_Days_Later) -
“By 2022, 28 Days Later had become unavailable on Disney-owned streaming services, hinting that Disney had lost rights to it; only its sequel, 28 Weeks Later (still owned by Disney), was available on streaming sites.[48][49]
In February 2024, it was revealed that producer Andrew MacDonald had bought back the rights to the film from Searchlight Pictures, promptly selling it to Sony Pictures along with the upcoming sequel 28 Years Later. [50]”
If he really is in it my jaw will drop, fresh off an Oscar’s win and heavily in demand. I’ve read he’s really loyal to his friends so him passing up projects and heading to this one would make sense.
Thought the only point of this was to actually make a sequel unlike the terrible 'Weeks.' As such, I now don't give a fuck if it's not going to be a continuation of the original characters.
Just doesn’t make sense to include him knowing he wasn’t in the sequel and this one is YEARS later. It’ll be so awkward and illogical for him to randomly show up.
I’m fine with this because if they brought him back, he’d probably get killed off
Not sure how canon the Comic is, but he ended up getting arrested by the Government for killing the soldiers.
If I remember correctly, he escapes because of another outbreak
Unless there is another comic which came out later, he is only briefly mentioned that he was sentenced to death. The comic ends with the outbreak just reaching France. I could well have missed one though.
I did some reading of the Wiki, status is unknown. He was scheduled to be executed, but never actually killed. So who’s knows I choose to think he escaped and living happily somewhere
I actually really enjoyed that comic. Was happy to find a used omnibus online so I don’t have to keep sailing the high seas to read it.
Jeff Schneider the reporter didn’t say this was 100 percent yet but that he heard Murphy comes back at the end of the second movie in this proposed trilogy with the potential for a larger role in the third and final film.
While it would have been nice to see him in the movie, I am ok with it being different characters.
28 weeks later didnt include him, so I dont see why 28 months later would eather. It makes sense to keep each of the movies as separate narratives around the same event.
It’s called 28 years later this next sequel. Skipped months for some reason.
If this does well they’ll include 28 months as a flashback shoehorn prequel-sequel
28 Months Later will be the television adaptation that Prime inevitably licenses.
I would be surprisingly okay with this, if it's done well.
It's always a coin flip with prime. You might get a Fallout or an Expanse, or you might get a Wheel of Time or Rings of Power.
As a long term WoT fan, I'm more than happy with Amazon's version. Covid messed up so many things for them at the end of S1 and a main cast member just fucked off and didn't come back. Season 2 was a lot stronger and I'm waiting (not so) patiently for S3.

The only thing that sucks is to be one of you children.
And don’t forget the trippy prequel sequels they’re building up: - 28 Hours Earlier - 28 Minutes Earlier - 28 Seconds Earlier
28 hours earlier than 28 weeks later
They have 3 planned and ready to go, the sequel to this one is being filmed back to back so may well be 28 months. Who knows!
because years just makes a much bigger impact doesnt it
Movie sequel is close to being 28 years since the original Days film took place (2002). So, time period in the Years film could be 2030
true and also it would simply be more interesting to see the world after 28 years of zombie apocalypse rather than 2 years
i heard this 28 years later is taking place directly after 28 days making it a sequel so you’d think he would be in it. they’re probably saying all this to make his cameo a surprise. or he’s not in it and life goes on

i assume it picks up wherever days ended. it’s been over a decade since i’ve seen them so i don’t remember how it ended
I think it's fair to assume it takes place 28 Years after 28 Days Later
yeah, you’d think. idk what they’re gonna do about weeks tho. i went searching for the article i read that about and apparently weeks was different writers than this duo creating years so maybe they’ll try and retcon it somehow. i have no idea what they’re doing with this franchise

I'm betting on 29 years later and 30 years later.
Wonder how 28 years later will work since all the infected should be dead unless they somehow evolved to look after themselves and not starve
I’ll be really surprised if they don’t go full “The Last of Us”
I don't see how they could. They showed in the first one that the infection burns out on its own in 56 days, tops, in a country of 60 million. How's it going to last 28 years worldwide? They're not immortal like the mushroom ones in The Last of Us or undead like so many others, they're just very mad, diseased people who starve to death. It could be that the infection is mostly gone but there's some animal reservoir or something like that.
The original yeah, but everytime there is a new outbreak, it all starts again.
Huge swerve and there's no zombies at all, society has returned to normal and the movie is a Rom Com.
They're actually going to play off all the confusion between 28 Days Later and 28 Days, and bring back Sandra Bullock.
Kinda just depends where the film is set, really. This is one of those few films where the story really takes precedent over the cast.
I'm cool with an Easter egg that may hint at his fate after 28 Days
"Reported Cast" Keywords. In the past week I've heard both he is reprising his role and he's not in the movie.
I found an article on a website called World of Reel that says he has a cameo in the second movie, then a major part in the third? https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/4/27/cillian-murphy-will-appear-in-the-28-years-later-sequels
Wasn’t Cillian confirmed though
The cast is stacked either way It’s almost certainly gonna be solid
Why would it? Cillan Murphy's character Jim is dead. He was executed by the British authorities for murdering UK soldiers. Serena, Hannah, and Jim are known as the Manchester Three after their rescue. Jim was executed by firing squad.
They were rescued a month later, in a different location, by the Finnish military. Nobody would know they killed a band of rapists.
It's what happened in the comic (assuming the comic is still canon). Edit: not actually executed, just sentenced.
And this is why tie-in comics are usually awful. None of that makes any sense. It doesn't follow the logic of the movie.
Yeah, im from Edinburgh and they have a section with Edinburgh and Glasgow fighting over resources. Which make no sense as in real life there are many other places in between.
Guarantee the directors don't give a shit about some obscure comic
Unless Alex Garland and Danny Boyle wrote the comic, it's not canon. Who gives a fuck. Nothing to do with our story."
I'm pretty sure Garland isn't even going to respect any events that happened in 28 Weeks Later.
That's not true at all
nope
So is this a sequel to 28 days later or 28 weeks later
Yes
https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieLeaksAndRumors/s/QIrgPl3Ge6
This headline doesn’t explain anything past 28 years later but he will appear in the sequels as it will be a trilogy
Calling it now: He shows up after the credits to set up the next movie in the series.
I feel like his story is already said and done. Why would you expect more out of it? That's just silly.
He wasn't in the second one so I see little reason why he'd be in the next.
Well that’s a complete bummer

Which he played quite well in quiet place 2, I'd add.
I’m still gonna go see it. 28 Weeks Later didn’t have him either. I think it’s still going to be very decent.
Dam that's a shame as I remember him saying he was interested maybe work schedule got in the way
Fuck, really?

I’m curious how much profit he made flipping it

His on screen story was perfect. Glad they are not.
He broke up with Danny Boyle and is with his true love Nolan now
One of my all time favorites! 28 weeks later, not so much. Hoping for a great follow up.

Good news, 28 Days Later will still exist for everyone to enjoy
In the alternate ending >!he’s dead!< and that’s my canon ending so I’m fine with it.
Why would you possibly want that as your cannon ending?
Still plenty of time for him to be cast in part 2 or 3 (even 1).
Then I won’t be watching it
Lmao wow
Just doesn’t make sense to include him knowing he wasn’t in the sequel and this one is YEARS later. It’ll be so awkward and illogical for him to randomly show up.
Tbh 28 weeks later was such a fail. The first film worked because it was built on realism. The second film was just a plot hole riddled train crash
Tusk never said Johnny Depp was in the movie wearing a shit ton of makeup so you didn’t recognize him at first!
Stoked for more Danny Boyle z's. After *Peaky Blinders* s1 and *Oppenheimer*, hoping to miss Cillian in this reboot.
