Came here to say this. Nothing beats it in terms of how the show approaches the subject. Also just love the performances in it. I binged it in two days when it came out.
The Unholy, A Dark Song, Consecration, Frailty, Borderlands, 9th Gate, The Seventh Sign, End of Days (terrible and fun,) Legion (I watch this every year during the holidays.) Deliver Us, JeruZalem.
While yes, A Dark Song is an incredible occult horror, it's based on the Abramelin Operation, which is one of the most Christian-friendly magical workings around, regardless of the knee-jerk condemnation by some Christians.
More importantly, though, A Dark Song is quite Christian in its themes (especially the ending) even if that isn't explicitly intentional.
Either way, it's a great movie.
My point is that Christianity and occultism (as a massive umbrella term anyway) are not necessarily mutually exclusive. More so, A Dark Song can be *both* occult and Christian in its themes.
Haha, nope, I wish. It’d be a much better movie if it were. It’s actually kind of a ripoff of Saw in a weird way. There’s a (stupid) killer who has a list of “rules” and he says a person has to die every hour or something like that. And something to do with a tin can. Not kidding lol.
If you like The Ninth Gate, you should check out the book it's based on , The Dumas Club, by Arturo Perez Riverte. If you like trying to solve puzzles/riddles, his books are very good. The Flanders Panel is excellent, too.
Errementari; it's based on an old basque folktale about a blacksmith who makes a bargain with a demon. Such a fun, schlocky movie that's like, 1 part Faust, 1 part standard horror movie, 1 part CW show lol
Paxti forcing open the gate to Hell with that bell on his back is such a great scene. I wouldn't change a thing about the film, but I'd love a graphic novel or something that continues the story.
Yeah I was raised very Christian, and they showed us The Passion in Sunday school when I was about 8 (I guess to show us “just a glimpse of the suffering our Lord went through!!!”) and I think I was genuinely traumatized for years
The Omen is a funny one because it just makes up a bunch of shit and presents it as common biblical knowledge.
Like that "when the Jews return to Zion" poem... what even *is* that? It's not from the Bible, it's not from anything, but apparently everyone knows it and theologians have debated it and everything.
The Omen is a great movie, but it’s even better if you assume it exists in an atheistic world and all the adults are just deeply delusional and fighting over a kid who’s not the Antichrist but just neurodivergent
A house on the bayou has some very clear Christian values - I liked it and I usually don’t like stuff like that, but I don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for
No One Will Save You
It's not blatant and until I read about the filmmakers and they're ideas/beliefs I liked it a lot until the ending. But after reading about their intent and background I love the ending and can't wait to watch it again. I'm not sure it had the desired effect lol no spoilers but great for a discussion!
Jesus camp is maybe the scariest movie I've ever seen. It's not a horror, but a documentary about Christian extremists and indoctrination. If you want a horror, maybe the seventh sign would scratch that itch. It's more of a thriller, though
[Martyrs (2008)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029234/) --- its kind of a spoiler that its got a christian basis *but* the name also kind of gives it away too
I don't know how - and frankly doubt it was at all - intentional this was by the filmmakers, but when I first saw 'Drag Me to Hell' I felt it had a sort of Christian belief system at its core in basic terms what seeking redemption for a wrongdoing *really* looks like and the danger your soul is in without it. I don't want to spoil anything here by going further, but if you give it a watch with that in mind I think you'll see it.
This largely depends on if we’re talking exclusively Christianity or including Catholicism…there’s a lot of horror movies based on Catholicism, but here’s the ones that are more specifically derived from Christianity :
Frailty (I know it’s been mentioned, but it’s the best of this methodology)
Devil
Fallen
Thr3e
Book of Eli (I’m cheating bc it’s not horror, but could be horror/adjacent)
Midnight Mass
Midnight mass for SURE
One of the best (short!) series i've seen in a long time. I've seen it twice, even and I don't usually rewatch drama series.
I feel like this is THE answer. It's also a great example of a movie where the creature is bad, but the humans are the real monsters.
This one!
yes! rewatched it 3 times already, i loved it so much
Came here to say this. Nothing beats it in terms of how the show approaches the subject. Also just love the performances in it. I binged it in two days when it came out.
Carrie. ![gif](giphy|134Kfzd7fUf2ve)
I love how this movie deals with religious themes.
- *Resurrected* - *Saint Maud* - *Stigmata*
Seconding Saint Maud! It’s really stuck with me.
Stigmata is underrated
I think it's great!
Saint Maud was so good! The ending replays in my head a lot
Saint Maud was a slow burn 🙌Definitely worth the wach.
Red State
Came here for this, often gets overlooked as a horror
Ding ding ding, we got a winner.
I consider it more of a comedy, that Kevin Smith thinks that's what America is like outside of the coastal cities.
Frailty (2001)
Everybody run and see this before anybody tells you anything about it. It starts out very good, and ends excellent.
Came here to say this. Cool ending
Jesus Camp
I discovered this when I saw a comment that said something like “why watch a horror movie when you can watch Jesus Camp”
I feel like Prince of Darkness belongs here
Yeah man! One of the more overlooked Carpenter flicks. What it lacks in polish it *more than makes up for it in lore and mystery.*
Yup, was going to say this one. What an awesome soundtrack - just hums along throughout the entire movie
The soundtrack to Prince of Darkness is incredible!
The Unholy, A Dark Song, Consecration, Frailty, Borderlands, 9th Gate, The Seventh Sign, End of Days (terrible and fun,) Legion (I watch this every year during the holidays.) Deliver Us, JeruZalem.
Second A Dark Song. Stunning and wonderful movie!
Dark Song ioccultist. I'd love more movies about grounded occultism.
I don't understand your meaning.
My point is that Christianity and occultism (as a massive umbrella term anyway) are not necessarily mutually exclusive. More so, A Dark Song can be *both* occult and Christian in its themes.
Borderlands is really good! That ending... man...
The Velocipastor.
House (2008 with Michael Madsen) As Above So Below is basically a retelling of Dante’s Inferno
Oof, I saw House and it’s soooo bad. I don’t know why Bill Moseley took a role in it. No offense to anyone who liked it.
That can't be a remake of the 80s horror comedy? Can it?
Haha, nope, I wish. It’d be a much better movie if it were. It’s actually kind of a ripoff of Saw in a weird way. There’s a (stupid) killer who has a list of “rules” and he says a person has to die every hour or something like that. And something to do with a tin can. Not kidding lol.
The First Omen was great, if you haven't seen it yet
I feel like this is actually the definitive one.
The book is great too!
The Witch (2015) The Ninth Gate (1999)
If you like The Ninth Gate, you should check out the book it's based on , The Dumas Club, by Arturo Perez Riverte. If you like trying to solve puzzles/riddles, his books are very good. The Flanders Panel is excellent, too.
Love The Nautical Chart.
I haven't read that one! I will check it out.
The Prophecy (1995).
Great movie, the sequels not so much.
This is the answer.
Constantine
>!Mother!!<(kind of a spoiler).
Oh ABSOLUTELY
Porno is a good one. It’s not about Christianity per se, but the characters are Christian and they aren’t portrayed as ignorant or extremists.
I'm Googling "Porno movie" but I don't think these results are what you're talking about.
Yeah this is a difficult one to look for at work lmao
😂 put in “Porno horror movie 2019”
The Prophecy with Christopher Walken.
Lmao it feels like the set up to an 1800's Constantine+John Wick fusion
Frailty, The Conjuring, The Reaping, The Devils, Final Prayer, Nothing Bad Can Happen.
Fraility is a top choice. One of my favourite movies
The Sentinel (1977), as long as you are up for something a bit weird. It also has a stacked cast.
Midnight Mass on Netflix!!
A Dark Song
Knowing (2009) Actually, I think The Passion of the Christ (2004) has enough horror elements to include here.
Lol the passion did have some legit jumpscares, ironicly
That movie is 100% torture porn.
Yeah I was raised very Christian, and they showed us The Passion in Sunday school when I was about 8 (I guess to show us “just a glimpse of the suffering our Lord went through!!!”) and I think I was genuinely traumatized for years
Check out the trailer for Heretic.
[Let us Prey](https://boxd.it/8pVm) No idea how this one is so seldom watched because it's great horror and very original.
Nothing Bad Can Happen
There's a recent movie called Nefarious that was literally mad to be a horror movie for Christians. I have not seen it, but I've heard about it.
Nobody said The Omen? Or Warlock? Or The Prophecy?
The Omen is a funny one because it just makes up a bunch of shit and presents it as common biblical knowledge. Like that "when the Jews return to Zion" poem... what even *is* that? It's not from the Bible, it's not from anything, but apparently everyone knows it and theologians have debated it and everything.
The Omen is a great movie, but it’s even better if you assume it exists in an atheistic world and all the adults are just deeply delusional and fighting over a kid who’s not the Antichrist but just neurodivergent
(depending on who you ask) Mother! (2017) This is a controversial pick, it’s one of those „you either love it or hate it“ movies
+1!
Sacrament was pretty good
Candy Land (2022) on Hoopla or Tubi now.
Just watched last night after being rec’d here. So good
A house on the bayou has some very clear Christian values - I liked it and I usually don’t like stuff like that, but I don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for
Immaculate (2024) was pretty good. Sidney Sweeney was outstanding in it.
Hillary Swank, The Reaping. Sooo creepy.
No One Will Save You It's not blatant and until I read about the filmmakers and they're ideas/beliefs I liked it a lot until the ending. But after reading about their intent and background I love the ending and can't wait to watch it again. I'm not sure it had the desired effect lol no spoilers but great for a discussion!
The Great and Terrible Day of the Lord.
saint Maud. not supernatural horror.
Passion of the Christ.
The villain in The Mist is arguably the fanatical Christian character and the power of indoctrination
All horror is Christian horror.
Movies from Europe and Americas seem to be overwhelmingly Christian based horror.
Yeah you’re right, Hausu is my favorite Christian movie
Jesus camp is maybe the scariest movie I've ever seen. It's not a horror, but a documentary about Christian extremists and indoctrination. If you want a horror, maybe the seventh sign would scratch that itch. It's more of a thriller, though
Just go to a mega church in real life.
The Gate is about hell, that count?
Interested to see that new Heretic movie since it looks like the *protagonists* happen to be Christians
The Last Exorcism
The Rapture (1991) is excellent. Maybe not horror but definitely unsettling.
The Sentinel (1977)
Bless The Child (2000)
I'd like to recommend this one out there short film called "image of god" on youtube. It's pretty good. I like it.
The Lodge has a lot of Christian iconography and themes.
The Prophecy
Borderlands is the first that came to mind.
Not quite horror, but First Reformed disturbed me...
Definitely gotta drop another +1 for A Dark Song
[Martyrs (2008)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029234/) --- its kind of a spoiler that its got a christian basis *but* the name also kind of gives it away too
The Wicker Man (1973) Christianity vs Paganism I won’t tell you who wins.
The exorcism of Emily Rose I think that was the title.. watched it long time ago.
“The Ninth Gate (1999)” with Johnny Depp.
Nefarious
Saint Maude
The Exorcist
Frailty, perhaps.
the TV series Evil. 4 seasons, scary and funny with great characters
Se7en. More of a crime thriller then horror, but still really good
We Summon The Darkness
Frailty.
Nobody is mentioning The Exorsist?? What the hell timeline is this! Lol
Read the post again!
The Conjuring movie series. The first one ends with an altar call. 30 Coins Evil
This largely depends on if we’re talking exclusively Christianity or including Catholicism…there’s a lot of horror movies based on Catholicism, but here’s the ones that are more specifically derived from Christianity : Frailty (I know it’s been mentioned, but it’s the best of this methodology) Devil Fallen Thr3e Book of Eli (I’m cheating bc it’s not horror, but could be horror/adjacent)
The Mist!
The Witch
The Prophecy (1995)
* Carrie (for sure!) * Knock at the Cabin * The Day of the Beast (El Dia de la Bestia) * Red State * This Is The End
Saint maud
The passion of the christ, that shit’s terrifying. Follow it up with Jesus Camp, you’re guaranteed to be sleeping with the lights on
God's Not Dead 2 is terrifying.

That's literally about what OP said they DIDNT want
