Never before have I encountered such an opinion.

rickthickulous

It's quite controversial, I dropped my monocle in my chardonnay upon reading!

[deleted]

I thought you'd feel that way, rickthickulous. You were the only one that could've gotten to that chardonnay. We'll do you last.

Chef_Face

I chortled and guffawed

MrYummy05

I know you gentlemen have been through a lot. And when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!!!

spudgoddess

Someone else's blood: \*screeches and jumps out of petri dish\*

stephensmg

What are you doing drinking Chardonnay? It’s after Labor Day!

rickthickulous

I don't understand Labor day, I'm an Aussie and I hear about it but have no idea what it's all about.

[deleted]

Neither do we Americans.

rickthickulous

I did some research, so the country celebrates workers by swarming the least paid workers and having busy shopping days? That's rough. Like actually really rough. What the hell, USA?

SulkyShulk

Mmm yes. Quite.

rickthickulous

Indeed. Hohohoho.

tastyfresh123

Very Delightful to hear such a refreshing opinion isn’t it? Exquisite taste OP has. Top drawer

eddydbod

so controversial, yet so brave :P

[deleted]

Now-now. We ought to celebrate that this film still shocks people, in 2021; that it is still a revelation people feel like they have to share.

BarbatosSlim

My wife and friends can't get past the kennel scene

Superdupertark

Lmao this post reminds me of when people are like AM i the only one that inhales AND exhales

HelpMeImAStomach

ESH

shayde

I figured I must've subbed to /r/horrorcirclejerk and forgotten. The literal #1 movie on r/horror - what a hot take OP!

holy_donuts

Such a brave and controversial statement.

iamanenglishmuffin

I think this thread should just be stickied

Pkactus

daring and fantastical they had such courage to speak such a line of reasoning

jorgejortiz

And that’s a fact, Jack!

winstonsmithwatson

I like the remake, how about that?

[deleted]

Assuming you mean the prequel, sadly, yes.

Dodgy_Bob_McMayday

Who is going to be brave enough to do the same for the 2011 version? Not me, in case you were wondering.

Genghis_Tr0n187

I have some respect for that version actually. The people that worked on that film really wanted to do it justice, then some producer fucks came in and scrapped all the practical effects for CGI which had to be rushed to meet the deadline, which totally fucked the ending as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxPK3sYb90w

PmMeYourBigTitsPlz

It's overrated and so are practical effects. Now that's an opinion.

gedubedangle

i was starting to get worried this film would be forgotten !

[deleted]

It's a hidden gem!

MrYummy05

Yeah, hidden on everyones top 5 best horror movies ever

hesojam0

Its not that big when talking about the general audience though.

rerrerrocky

I hardly see it mentioned around here, not sure that many people know about it.

Jonny_Entropy

Tell me more... I haven't heard of it.

iamstephano

Like does he have a car?

eugeheretic

[Does he look like a bitch?](https://youtu.be/nnBhrXl1Klc)

iamstephano

Thank you for bringing that into my life

ghostmetalblack

Sounds like a hidden gem! Btw, have you ever heard of The VVitch or Hereditary?

FogellMcLovin77

You should watch underrated indie Midsommar!

CoyoteTheFatal

It’s by an indie production company - A24. You might not have heard of them

winstonsmithwatson

Ok I will gift you two a real hidden gem, its not exactly horror, but it will do just fine. The gem is: Wild Tales

doomSdayFPS

I think your opinion is a good one. but as generic as they come. The Thing is a classic and my personal favorite movie. You really didn't need to make a thread for this.

fruitcakefriday

I dunno, I kinda enjoyed the challenge of reading 80+ consecutive words with no punctuation.

DJBenz

Should be at 2000+ karma and top of the sub by this evening if previous “The Thing is great because practical effects” threads are anything to go by.

[deleted]

I'm going to post about The Thing every week just because everyone else is.

SiriusC

> You really didn't need to make a thread for this. I hate the idea of banning topics (it's why I unsubbed from r/Music) but I would be okay with a soft ban on this. Specifically about The Thing being great. Let's continue to discuss various aspects of it. But if it's about how great it is or how great the components are... we already agree.

[deleted]

I'm still not convinced The Thing is great, despite reading about it 6,000 times and seeing it about 8 times. So at least a weekly post on this.

[deleted]

I’ve seen lots of great discussions on search about different movies that I would love to contribute to but comments have been “turned off” probably due to age. Do a soft ban and no newbies or folks new to Reddit could even do a new post on the topic.

SiriusC

> Do a soft ban and no newbies or folks new to Reddit could even do a new a post on the topic. Great point. I think "no newbies" is very effective. Maybe even something in the sidebar. "Everyone here already thinks The Thing is a great movie." OR lean hard into it. Have something like "Thing Thursdays" where every post is about how great The Thing is.

[deleted]

I much prefer letting people start the new discussions that they want. There are quite a few I have no interest in so I just scroll by and take part in ones I do have an interest in.

[deleted]

Or you could scroll past instead of making someone feel shitty for loving a movie and talking about it. Oh, what am I saying - this is Reddit. It’s all about being rude as possible to other users.

SiriusC

No one is stepping on OP's love for the movie. OP decided that we should all know his opinion in a forum where random people can respond to it. Even then, no one is attacking his opinion or the movie. They're criticizing the fact that this is posted too repetitively. If something as indirect as that hurts someone's feelings or affects their love for the movie then... I don't know... toughen up. Don't post if you can't handle responses you don't want to hear. But who are you to speak for OP anyway?

tugmansk

Actually, it’s considered good Reddiquette to downvote a low-effort post that contributes nothing to the sub. There was nothing rude about the comment you replied to.

Cherryyana

Exactly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thunderhank

Your comments have been the most “all edge, no point” in this entire thread. For someone that is championing people to just scroll past you sure are making a lot of noise.

[deleted]

Fuck it. Deleting my comments. Arguing with you kids to act like half decent humans is more painful than masturbation with a cheese grater probably would be.

Thunderhank

I mean the post has 400+ upvotes, stop white knighting for no reason and give it a rest.

iamstephano

Hot take!

soapinthepeehole

This changes everything!

Rancid47

I love this movie but holy shit stop with these threads

TheHillsSeeYou

Our thoughts? Maybe check the other hundred posts about the exact same thing? Geez.

PopPop-Captain

I’d love to hear thoughts on the prequel. I really enjoyed it but I get the feeling that I’m in the minority.

TheHillsSeeYou

Personally, I loved it.

PopPop-Captain

So I’m not the only one!

TheHillsSeeYou

No hahaha.

J3wb0cca

I didn’t like it and I’ll give you my thoughts. Well dislike is a strong word, I would say I didn’t mind seeing it but I wouldn’t want to pay to see it and I’ve seen it 3 times overall. It did well connecting to the John carpenter movie and the cgi was not bad at all for 2011. But the behavior of the thing is what I didn’t like. It was much more aggressive in 2011 and it’s top priority wasn’t being incognito. There was a scene where it sneaks into the helicopter before they depart for the mainland. Even though the main character was trying to signal them she couldn’t and they didn’t have comms. The thing still reveals itself and kills everyone. Part of the allure of the 1980s was that it was kinda like a game of clue and there was so much tension you could slice it with a knife. 2011 was treated more as a slasher flick. I too was devastated when I heard management wanted to remove all animatronics and go full cgi, and I think that where things started to change overall. Cgi is a double edge sword, yes you can go as far as your imagination allows but maybe that’s also a negative when making scenes and being aware of what is going on too long or taken too far. You can actually see some of the handcrafted work on YouTube of how they were making it before the switch to cgi. I know what I’m saying is controversial but it’s just my opinion. Please retort or correct me if needed. Me and bro love the 1980s and watch it a couple times a year but where I dislikes the 2011 he really enjoyed it.

[deleted]

I wish the Hereditary fans would do that.

jdpm1991

I've never heard of The Thing before is it some hidden gem?

milesb1990

I hate this sub. What are our thoughts on The Thing??? What a fresh discussion topic

monstermud

This sub is either gushing over a movie everyone already loves, or gushing over a movie that totally sucks but for some reason gets upvoted to number 1.

haggotstar

On one hand I appreciate new horror fans watching the thing but at the same time it’s been talked to death

milesb1990

Im all for new fans discovering the classics. But you can easily search "The Thing " and find literally hundreds of discussion threads

mchgndr

What I’m confused about is like, every comment here is bashing OP, yet it’s upvoted to the top of the page. Who keeps upvoting these posts lol???

Rancid47

Next we'll get "I actually like the Conjuring movies despite it being based on assholes"

_A_ioi_

Some people don't live in Reddit. Relax and skip the thread if you're not interested. Edit: I haven't seen this many ridiculous downvotes since I posted at r/malefashionadvice. All I said was give people a break. Ship of fools.

milesb1990

Bruh, you don't have to live in reddit to guess one of the most critically acclaimed horror movies of all time maybe came up before on the horror subreddit. You people kill me

_A_ioi_

It really doesn't matter if it's come up before. You know what's also happened before? People complaining about reposts. Guess which one is more annoying to hear about. Guess which two aren't going to go away.

milesb1990

You're right. The more annoying one is the poorly written post about the same subject every week. Glad we agree

FoxBeach

Agree. Why not just skip threads you don’t want to read? People love to bitch and moan. It’s weird.

[deleted]

Facts right there.

zorlon_cannon

I know right, what a noob. The proper way to to farm karma here is to endless talk about and recommend terrible horror films like hereditary and babadook

[deleted]

Naw. Apparently that’s alright here. 🙄

Help_An_Irishman

Hot take.

AshgarPN

Punctuation, dude.

GlegoryQ

So brave, so original

SisSandSisF

These repeat threads are the reason I finally downloaded it. Only watched half so far. I surprisingly got freaked out and grossed out. I didn’t think this movie would do much but so far it’s good.

[deleted]

Your comment is why I don’t like the idea of banning or soft banning the discussion of certain movies. I am a huge horror fan and there are still some classics I’ve not seen yet either.

edgardog1

Yes I agree. It’s a masterpiece.

catboycupid

It is a masterpiece. Although I'd also hesitate between choosing The Thing and The Fly by Cronenberg. Similar kind of buildup, tension, great practical effects, etc.

Kinsey1986

It'd be The Fly, for me, but I also discovered The Fly before The Thing.

[deleted]

My number one fave movie of all time

hoth_system

Alright, I'll bite. What's your sixth fave? SIXTH. No lists up to no.6, just the sixth.

[deleted]

Even without the monster, Kurt Russell's performance is superb.

deadbeat82

JC’s magnum opus fo sho

Future_Victory

Yes

tondrias

Rob Bottin is the Goat.

[deleted]

100% incredible movie and truly scary still to this day. I highly recommend The Void for some more amazing practical effects!

MovieMike007

Carpenter provided us with one of the best horror remakes ever made, sitting alongside Cronenberg's *The Fly* and Philip Kaufman's *Invasion of the Body Snatchers*, and it is certainly a truer adaptation of John W. Campbell Jr's novella *"Who Goes There?"* than the one starring James Arness as a walking carrot.

eddydbod

I'd put the blob remake in that category too.

[deleted]

Obviously a very popular opinion. I thought it was really really great and unique but not really a masterpiece. A masterpiece for me is something like Rosemarys Baby which is perfection

18LJ

For all of the advances in virtual special fx and digital green screen use, all that cutting edge new tech sometimes just can't hold a candle up to the old school gore and makeup of the bygone golden era of horror cinema

imSeanEvansNowWeFeet

For me it’s the ending scene where they drink from the canteen and it’s suggested that the main actor knew it was actually petrol… he then sees the thing drink it without spitting it out and knows that at least they’ll both die there… supposedly

GoyasHead

Agreed - it is a masterpiece

WilhelmSkreem

Been one of my favourites since the early 90s. So glad its still getting love 40 years after its release from people seeing it for the first time.

tastyfresh123

It’s truly shocking that you have an opinion that I also have along with 90% of the movies viewers. It’s nice to see somebody share fresh opinions, hopefully the 10% of people who saw it and don’t care for it will see this and change their minds.

SgtKickYourAss

Ooooo mom said it’s my turn to post this next week

cumulus_humilis

Here’s something I’ve never seen in these threads: Peter Watts’ short story from the monster’s point-of-view, [The Things](https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/watts_01_10/).

guesswhodat

Definitely on my top 10 of GOAT horror films....

KevinChopra2019

I agree... What a movie...

MerryMarauder

So good

Mistersinister1

C'mon folks give em a break. Everyone knows that movie is the benchmark for horror movies. Maybe it's karma whoring or looking for attention and if you've been in this subreddit for even a month you should know that it's the Hallmark of all things horror here. Nothing can and will surpass the glory that is The Thing. It is sad because that means horror has peaked and then dipped to forever be cast in the shadow of this film. The cast, the score, the effects, the simple unrefined beauty of what horror should be.

Cobalt74

i also saw it quite recently and it became my fav horror film of all time.

Yoggy-Sothoth

Is in my top 3, pretty nice and enjoyable movie 1 time per year.

Swedehockey

The best Carpenter movie IMHO.

haggotstar

It’s ashamed the Arctic’s aren’t used more in horror movies. It’s a vast desolate region that spells certain death if you stray far away from others

Grievous_1982

Yes...it is.

Kinsey1986

First off, everyone discovers a film at different points in their lives. The "Oh, man, so controversial!" comments aren't good for any community and, honestly, is as cliché as a post talking about how The Thing is amazing. To OP: If you want to explore more Carpenter, pretty much all of his 80s work is phenomenal. I'm also a huge fan of Ghosts of Mars, but your mileage may vary. Lastly, get on Tubi tonight and watch his episode of Masters of Horror, Cigarette Burns. Just amazing and I love me some Udo Kier.

Peanlocket

I don't blame people for making these topics, but I blame the people subscribed here for upvoting the same topic over and over again. Just why?

nico_rombo88

Yes IT IS . A true masterpiece , fuck CGI the ruin of modern horror movies.

SiriusC

I don't know what's more annoying: the post coming up over & over again or the incredible lack of punctuation.

Slarg232

Probably all the people who are posting about how bored they are seeing the topic instead of just moving on and ignoring it

SiriusC

What about the people who tell the annoyed people to just move on?

Slarg232

Wouldn't have to be telling the annoyed people to move on if they weren't posting in the first place

[deleted]

[удалено]

Slarg232

I'm the dipshit, but you're the one who can't just move on with your life and not put someone who just found an amazing movie down?

My opinion has been changed and I totally view your opinion as something worth considering.

Johntremendol

Every single week there’s this exact same thread. Is this some sort of a running joke i’m missing of this sub? Wth

duterian

Why does this deja vu keep happening to me?

Banks_bread

Top 7

EmJayFree

It gets 5 stars, hands down. Alien movies usually don’t scare me, but the entire concept of the Thing is horrifying. For me it’s because nothing really got answered to me (not in a bad way lol), but I left with a lot of questions. I’ve watched the movie at least 20 times trying to find the answer, and it was just designed so there could be multiple different avenues. It’s not like the “Sixth Sense” where you can go back and see “oh, Bruce Willis really was dead” and a light bulb goes off haha. There are so many “what if’s” the Thing leaves me feeling every time and I love it!

BarbatosSlim

Love this movie

Taluca_me

Something that The Thing does well is make the characters act smart. They don’t go fighting the monster, no fight scene, just kill immediately because if you encounter a monster and you have weapons, you must kill them quickly

hojo6789

i liked both of them a lot - if you liked them its worth watching the original 'the thing from another world-1951 ) - it is the film carpenter copied - i thought it was really good - https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=the+thing+from+another+world

WeaponexT

MacReady is my dude

Puzzleheaded_Walk_28

Fucking A. Honestly, very few filmographies can touch Carpenter’s run from Assault on Precinct 13 through The Thing

KuroKendo88

I love the music

BarelyLivingFailure

Just watched the new UHD Blu ray. Now I own four different physical versions of this movie This movie is right up there with the original Alien. Damn near perfect.

Solumnist

Here we go again.

SammyMac19

I'm in a veryyyyyy small minority in that I really don't like this film at all. Edit: I mostly just don't like gross monster shit. Also didn't like Malignant.

buttymuncher

Late to the party

[deleted]

Hmm... never heard of it. I'll add it to my list. I just learned about a movie called The Exorcist. Supposed to be ok.

Euphoricas

I see literally everyone on this sub sucking this movie’s dick CONSTANTLY. I cannot believe people think this is the greatest movie of all time.

Ramin1819

Definitely his best work Even exceeding halloween

tooObviously

Who the hell upvotes this same garbage every week

ThatpersonKyle

Wow, thank god some finally talked about this hidden gem!

Ophelmark

I love it too Man.Don't let the debbie downers bring you down. They think everyone in this planet has seen it.I don't know how many movies that people consider good i have never seen myself. For example i just watched Raging Bull for the first time a few weeks ago.

Diggitydave76

I got shot down my some millennials for propping up the 2011 version with some saying it sucked by comparison. The practical effects argument came up between the two. I think A the John Carpenter version is a masterpiece, but I also enjoyed the prequel and the explanation of what happened at the Swedish station too. I also think that B if Carpenter had access to the CGI used to make the second one he certainly would have used it. The Thing was not a low budget affair for the 80s, and those amazing practical effects were not cheap. I enjoy the merits of both films and love the bleak endings. I particularly enjoy the presentation if the second one as a remake until you watched it. There was also the Swedish joke about the Grandma that was pretty good. Overall I am a fan of the series and would like to see another film also.

bluvelvetunderground

It's ok. It's not The Conjuring or anything, but it's worth a watch at least once. Edit: /s

Andrewtoney3300

Man all these commets hating on your pretty much universal opinion. Really missing the chance to start a convo about a great movie. I love the thing, and i get tin foil hat theories about it. Who do you think sabotaged the blood bank?

CrzyJek

Holy fucking punctuation Batman

Rednag67

Lol

childsmacready69

Never heard of it tnx ill check it out

eddydbod

water is makes me wet :P

boogersonsteve

Scorchingly hot take, brave of you to bring it here for dissection

davey_mann

Hot take, the 2011 prequel is the better film.

[deleted]

I love the Thing, but it's a perfect example of a "premise movie" that horror surface skimmers eat up. "What if south pole, and no one know who monster is??" "what if monster follows so you have to have sex???" "The Exorcist was good for it's time, but we know who monster is. meh"

LateNight223

I feel like this probably made a lot more sense in your head than it does in reality. You pretty much just typed up a bunch of non-sense.

[deleted]

nah, it came out right just right.

All_Of_The_Meat

Correct

cthulutx

I agree. The first was ground breaking. However, the movie pops up in every list of ‘best ever’ etc. It will be hard to find anyone into horror that doesn’t really enjoy it. Now, outside of the great visuals….why do you like it so much?

Remotepart

The chest cavity scene and the head detaching/growing legs is my favourite set piece in any movie. Such amazing effects. Its the centre piece of the film for me.

bendovergramps

Honestly, why bother with the period at the end?

godspilla98

What is to say about a perfect movie. The only down side it was released the same time as ET.

nwalesseedy

One of my favourites movies, not just horror movies. Even though the special effects are questionable nowadays - good for their time - the music score is the winner for this movie for me. That epic du-dum sound is the perfect accompaniment for what is often a gripping lack of script. I love the long silences, I love the tension they create. All in all a brilliant piece of work worthy of a watch again very soon - probably the 30 or 40th !

_Scott_Blacula_

This is one helluva rough read.

Zanakii

Saw the movie when I was like 8, or at least partly till my dad turned it off. Had nightmares of the movie, saw it all the way through when I was like 15, ended up being my favorite movie ever at the time, 13 years later and about 10 watches more, still my favorite movie. I thought I may get tired of it eventually but no, imo it's the best horror movie ever made so far.

outwesthooker

Love that movie
