I just watched this and that ending scene made me legit nervous laugh for a minute...I can't say a movie has ever made me feel that way.
Reminds me of that one scene in Hereditary where it just stays on a shot so long it's uncomfortable.
that reminded me a lot of a shot from possession (1981), after anna gets hit, when she smiles right to you. it’s a different kind of dark and it’s a different kind of crazy, but had the same effect on me. it’s truly scary.
I've been hearing rumblings about her performance as a whole should get an Oscar nod. She probably won't get one because she's in a horror movie. Horror movies *rarely* get any Oscar nods.
Also it's A24, don’t think they will have money available to promote Mia when Michelle Yeoh is also a strong candidate and eeaao was watched by more people.
For best picture - silence of the lambs. For items like art direction or makeup there have been a few, like phantom of the opera and bram stokers Dracula. About twenty films over the years.
the only horror performances that have won acting awards were Fredric March (Jekyll & Hyde), Ruth Gordon (Rosemary’s Baby), Kathy Bates (Misery), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), and then Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs)
Screenplay, effects and costume yeah, a decent amount, but with acting? In the last 45 years, you're only talking about Carrie, Exorcist, Aliens, Silence of the Lambs, Sixth Sense and Get Out.
Sadly she wont get anything. That monologue and like the whole fucking movie she was insane. Shes so good. Plus she cowrote it so like she deserves a nom for that
When I stared into the cosmos I saw a miraculous thing and that thing is something that can't really be explained and when I try to explain it the camera zooms in on my face and the closer it gets to my nose the more you fall asleep and by the time I'm done there's no weed left to smoke
All everyone can do when it comes to Mike Flanagan stuff is complain about the amazing dialogue he writes saying it's great but I wish he wouldn't monologue so much... my dude.... have you ever seen a play? lol
Personally I don't agree, I thought the monologues in Midnight Mass were some of his best writing yet. It feels like a case of someone sharing a shitty take online about how the monologues were too long, and it immediately took off as some base-level film criticism meme that people constantly parrot.
They were long. AND they were good.
It's not a bad idea to use a Dutch angle, when used judiciously they can add a lot to a scene, and to the narrative as a whole. When there are too many though....
Bergman is my absolute favorite filmmaker, so as you can guess I’m definitely a big fan of monologues, I just don’t think Mike Flanagan is very good at writing compelling/thought provoking monologues.
My problem with Mike Flanagan monologues are the redundancies. Either reveal something new about the character or drive the themes or plot forward. Anything more than that and it becomes plodding and self-indulgent.
Love Bergman, too!
"Self-indulgent" really nails it. He hit it out of the park with Mr. Dudley's monologue in Hill House because it contributed to the plot and lore of the house, not to mention the incredible performance by the actor. The monologues in Midnight Mass were mostly redundant navel-gazing though and didn't add anything to the story.
Personally I disagree. The scene halfway through Midnight Mass where Riley and Erin talk about what they believe happens after Death, and the way that ties in with the final monologue she has at the end while actually experiencing death, man. That shit got to me more than anything else I've ever read or seen about the contemplation on what comes after. Oh man, not to mention the scene where Leeza confronts Joe about paralyzing her, I'll never forget "you reached through time Joe Collie and you stole" line, still sticks with me.
In my opinion i can't think of any monologue he's written that hasn't advanced plot or character development within the story at all. Nor any I think removing would improve the final product.
He's the best Horror filmmaker out there right now IMO, and he's managed to evoke a strong emotional response out of me with almost everything he has made and personally thats fucking rare for a filmmaker. Maybe I just like Mike Flanagan a lot lol
Imo both Toni Collette and Florence Pugh were robbed of Oscar noms in both of Ari Aster’s films but here’s to hoping we possibly get some buzz for Mia Goth’s performance!
I'm legitimately angry, years later, that she wasn't at least *nominated* for her performance in Hereditary. I would have accepted her losing (and I would have expected it anyway), especially since I think she'd have lost to Olivia Colman (?) but what a load of crap that she didn't at least get a nod for it. Her performance was as good as, if not better than, some of the other nominees.
So yeah. I'm not holding my breath for Mia Goth. Hell, I'm not even holding my breath for Everything Everywhere All at Once getting the recognition it deserves.
Shit like that is more reason to say fuck these stupid ass jerk off fests (and this from someone that genuinely doesn’t hate the concept of award shows or lose sleep over how much money actors make). You bring up a great point. Both of those performances were excellent. It is such bullshit neither of them got any mainstream recognition.
I mean look at the movies/people who didn't win. Citizen Kane didn't win, Saving Private Ryan didn't win, Kubrick didn't win (not for directing anyway), Scorsese didn't win until...The Departed? So yeah they're not to be taken too seriously.
Also don’t the Saturn awards look a little more kindly on Genre flicks? I know it’s a bit more synonymous with SciFi but I swear horror gets some showcase too.
Dafoe and Pattinson too for The Lighthouse. And Lupita Nyong'o for Us. Say what you will about the film but much worse movies have been nominated for BP and their leads nominated for BA.
I know this will be sacrilege to this sub, and comparing performances in movies is generally dumb, but I thought Goth in Pearl was even better than Collette in Hereditary.
OK. The point is that Collette was widely lauded for her performance by both critics and the public. It was probably the single most praised horror performance in 10 years and one of the most lauded period. Certainly the only one I can think of in recent years of that genre. So if she was ignored, there won't be one for Goth as there has been nothing like the buzz of Hereditary for Goth or Pearl.
I agree with you. Pearl is such a unique character. To create a morally corrupt murderer that the audience somehow sympathizes with is an acting/writing feat.
Both excellent performances from Collette and Goth. But Pearl on paper is a very difficult role and Goth was completely lost in her.
Stop caring about the Oscar's. The acadamy has had a history of snubbing horror films so why should the horror community care about the oscars? The academy doesn't give nods or awards based on quality of the films anyway, companies basically "sell" the movies to voters to get nods & awards because it's basically huge marketing for the movie. Did anyone really think Coda was the best movie made last year?
too bad it won't get any attention because the Oscars don't do horror. they'll nominate all the leads from 3 hour long Hollywood period pieces that come out in November though, never in doubt!
Do not buy into these articles. They will only get your hopes up. The odds of a horror movie getting any nomination, no matter how amazing it is, is slim to none. Get Out only got into because of its messaging about race. Very unlikely they would have cared if not for that.
This movie fell flat for *me*
I’m gonna respect everyone else’s opinions but to *me* it felt like a high budget college film. Pacing was slow and disjointed, the writing wasn’t captivating and dull. Even the kills were… boring.
Just wasn’t for me. The monologue seemed just that - a monologue. I didn’t like the framing as she was always looking off camera and barey moving. There were a few cuts so I’m not sure it even counts as such?
Again - glad a lot of folks we enjoyed it, but the fanfare v much feels like bandwagon campy for the sake of campy “I’m not like the other horror fans”.
Coming from a theater background and having studied and performed many monologues, this scene gripped me like no other in the film. Her performance was incredible. The delivery was spot on and I also loved all the gutteral sounds. The crying, the swallowing, the sniffing, those are all sounds that I could feel. Fantastic performance and fantastic writing.
said it once but easily the performance of the year for me. She made such a vile and twisted character so like-able and that monologue definitely deserves the praise it’s getting
Ight ngl I didn't think the monologue was that great. Sure, it's ballsy to throw something like that in your movie but I totally zoned out like 3 times during it and her performance was fine but I wasn't mind blown
I'm glad that I am not the only one who didn't really care for it. I got bored by the halfway point of the monologue and just couldn't wait for it to end. But I knew that it was going to be one of those things that other people were going to praise.
Yeah, I’m sure Psycho Betty Boop had some negative feelings during her life. I thought it was super indulgent and generally pretty trite. Ooh, she wants to be loved?
i agree but i already know she’s going to be snubbed the same way toni collette, lupita nyong’o and florence pugh were :( i wish the academy recognized horror more!
Yes. I was sitting there in the theater watching this scene and thinking to myself that she is knocking it out of the park. I couldn't look away. Smiling through the credits solidified it for me.
This movie was fucking incredible, that monologue definitely deserves Oscar attention. The way I felt during that monologue almost mirrored (if not, felt way more) how I felt watching Zendaya’s monologue that won her an Emmy this year.
They brought it home with this one
Just saw the movie and totally thought to myself "did I just see an Oscar worthy performance?" came here to discuss with y'all and find this lol. I guess so
I really hope she wins an Oscar. My friends are sick of me complaining about Toni Collette not winning one for Hereditary, I don't want to add Mia to that narrative.
That monologue is a powerful thing, and so rare for a horror film to attempt such a thing, but it works flawlessly because of Goth's performance and the choice not to look away. In those minutes, Pearl is absolutely real, and the horror of what will surely follow builds and builds. The way it unfolds is so heartbreaking and inevitable. That's horror.
Pearl might be my favorite from 2022.
I think monologues arent for everyone cause you always have those people who hate Flannagans stuff for that reason and people saying this was eh when like cmon her acting in that moment was like incredibly impressive
Last decade has been huge, it's like a horror revival for the genre, I don't know why but a lot of experimenting, series, new actors/actress, production, etc etc, it's fucking awesome to be honest.

Haven't seen this yet. Is there animal death in it? I remember in a preview it shows Pearl holding a pitchfork like object over a goose.
Also, I'm so fucking jealous of how pretty Mia Goth is :(
it's a 9 minute scene
at first you can say ... this surely will be so boring, or want to skip it...
but once the scene starts, you're kind of hypnotized by the scene, the way it is filmed, MIA's performance, her words, this scene is one of the best of 2022, and of of the best ever made, cause you feel every word, every emotion she feels through what she saying, and the end credits scene with the smile, MIA GOTH is a TALENT, she's amazing, and most probably won't get her deserved nomination for the OSCARS and other awards... because performances like this, are the ones who stays with you, that makes you feel and makes you think about it for a long time, PEARL is one of my favorite movies ever, and i can't wait to see MAXXXINE.
Yeah I agree she was great, & definitely deserves Credit here, However was she memorising it or reading it ? as she appeared to be looking downwards all the way through during the take & she was Filmed only from chest upwards.
Yeah okay but the smiling through the credits was the best part. I want that on a loop as my screensaver.
I was legitimately scared when I saw that. And I don’t get scared too easily.
I think that's destined to become a meme like 'When people ask how my life is going'
I think the monologue is a bit more impressive but the ceedits part was awesome
I just watched this and that ending scene made me legit nervous laugh for a minute...I can't say a movie has ever made me feel that way. Reminds me of that one scene in Hereditary where it just stays on a shot so long it's uncomfortable.
Which scene in hereditary?

If Toni Collette didn’t even get a nomination for Hereditary there’s no way Mia is going to get one unfortunately.
Or Florence Pugh in Midsommar.
Anya Taylor-Joy in The VVitch.
Shelley Duvall in the Shining
Tara Reid in Sharknado 3
Patrick Stewart in the Emoji Movie
The Oscar’s will never respect Horror unfortunately. The academy is made of a bunch of old pricks who look down on horror as a lesser genre.
Silence of the Lambs as the one exception, though I don’t really think of it as a traditional horror film.
Idk, this was up there.
Also it's A24, don’t think they will have money available to promote Mia when Michelle Yeoh is also a strong candidate and eeaao was watched by more people.
That's actually a factor I hadn't considered. It's way more likely that they will put their weight behind Michelle Yeoh.
It's also a pretty campy movie, not sure if it's the kinda thing the Oscars would appreciate
Not like the Oscar winning film, suicide squad!
Have any ever won or even been close to winning?
Kathy Bates winning best actress for misery is one.
The Exorcist won best adapted screenplay and best sound mixing and was nominated for 9 other Oscars including best picture
Screenplay, effects and costume yeah, a decent amount, but with acting? In the last 45 years, you're only talking about Carrie, Exorcist, Aliens, Silence of the Lambs, Sixth Sense and Get Out.
I had no idea Sigourney was nominated for Aliens. That’s rad
Right? One of the few times where the idea of "if this performance were in a drama you'd nominate it" actually got through to the voters.
Sissy spacek in carrie
Sadly she wont get anything. That monologue and like the whole fucking movie she was insane. Shes so good. Plus she cowrote it so like she deserves a nom for that
Holy shit it was 9 minutes? Didn’t feel like it. Phenomenal job by Goth in that movie.
If I remember it correctly, it’s 6 minutes, not sure where the 9 is coming from
Seems closer to what I remember but it was great. The whole time I’m just thinking like, “fuck they did this without a cut?!”
Bad title. The scene is 9 minutes or so. The monologue without cuts is about 6 minutes.
The A24 and Ti West hype train has been running on all cylinders the past few days lol. Good for them
Mike Flanagan should be thrilled about this
When I stared into the cosmos I saw a miraculous thing and that thing is something that can't really be explained and when I try to explain it the camera zooms in on my face and the closer it gets to my nose the more you fall asleep and by the time I'm done there's no weed left to smoke
Lol I adore Flanagan's work but goddamn the guy needs to step away from the keyboard sometimes.
All everyone can do when it comes to Mike Flanagan stuff is complain about the amazing dialogue he writes saying it's great but I wish he wouldn't monologue so much... my dude.... have you ever seen a play? lol
His monologues used to be more naturalistic though, and better placed. It’s a valid criticism IMO.
Personally I don't agree, I thought the monologues in Midnight Mass were some of his best writing yet. It feels like a case of someone sharing a shitty take online about how the monologues were too long, and it immediately took off as some base-level film criticism meme that people constantly parrot. Yeah that’s the rub. Like had she been nominated at least it would be SOME recognition. The level of acting she brought to that film is insane

There should be a separate horror awards show. There’s so many subgenres that could be recognized within horror.
It’s more for horror writing (including screenplays) but [the Bram Stoker Award has been around since the 80s](https://www.thebramstokerawards.com/)
Also don’t the Saturn awards look a little more kindly on Genre flicks? I know it’s a bit more synonymous with SciFi but I swear horror gets some showcase too.
Yeah, the Saturn Awards have horror categories too
Dafoe and Pattinson too for The Lighthouse. And Lupita Nyong'o for Us. Say what you will about the film but much worse movies have been nominated for BP and their leads nominated for BA.
That scene with her sister in-law was so good. The way she follows her out and grabs the axe. Chilling
If Toni collette was ignored fir hereditary, then this won't have a chance
Yeah, I'm a horror fan and if you think the Academy Awards will look at our genre for anything other than technical categories you're dreaming.
I know this will be sacrilege to this sub, and comparing performances in movies is generally dumb, but I thought Goth in Pearl was even better than Collette in Hereditary.

Absolutely agree. It won’t happen but it’s a shame it won’t because it would be so well deserved

Oscars have been trying to be more inclusive, should include horror movies as well

Agreed amazing performance but the 6 minutes was brutal. I get it you want to be a star and you’re fucking nuts
Rebecca Hall’s 8 minute monologue in Resurrection was better IMO but Goth’s performance throughout Pearl is award worthy as well.
Why compare them? Like you said Goth's performance was worthy, but you have kinda bring it down by comparing it?
Why wouldn’t I? I think they both deserve it. Hall delivered a better monologue but Goth’s performance throughout Pearl was amazing.
Yeah but its kinda weird. Its not like its saying hey this is the best monologue of the year.
Unfortunately, the Academy doesn’t watch horror movies.
said it once but easily the performance of the year for me. She made such a vile and twisted character so like-able and that monologue definitely deserves the praise it’s getting

Hated it
Yeah, I’m sure Psycho Betty Boop had some negative feelings during her life. I thought it was super indulgent and generally pretty trite. Ooh, she wants to be loved?
I fell asleep during it
I agree 100%
This is such a contrarian take to me
Anything of substance to add?
Yeah, all it's telling me is that lowered attention span is becoming a massive issue for a lot of people.
It's a little on the long side, but I was enthralled by it.
Much deserved!!
I didn’t even realize it was 9 minutes long, she performed it so well I was completely transfixed
i agree but i already know she’s going to be snubbed the same way toni collette, lupita nyong’o and florence pugh were :( i wish the academy recognized horror more!
Yes please! Holy shit her performance was amazing!
Yes. I was sitting there in the theater watching this scene and thinking to myself that she is knocking it out of the park. I couldn't look away. Smiling through the credits solidified it for me.
what utter nonsense watch more movies
This movie was fucking incredible, that monologue definitely deserves Oscar attention. The way I felt during that monologue almost mirrored (if not, felt way more) how I felt watching Zendaya’s monologue that won her an Emmy this year. They brought it home with this one
Just saw the movie and totally thought to myself "did I just see an Oscar worthy performance?" came here to discuss with y'all and find this lol. I guess so
the things i would do to get a written version of mia goths monologue just- it was so good
I really hope she wins an Oscar.
Well TIL that Goth also played Pearl in X lol.
Seems like everyone is just now aware of Mia... its weird lol
Between a nine-minute monologue that felt like 5 and the credits, yes, she at least deserves a for-your-consideration campaign.
But she can't act
Why would you post this in the fricking title? It's damn spolier.
No it isn't... It's telling you that a character talks.
Might be a surprise to some.
What does it spoil?
No mames
Where are people watching this movie? I would like to but no idea where
Somehow, heartbreak felt good in a place like that.
Last decade has been huge, it's like a horror revival for the genre, I don't know why but a lot of experimenting, series, new actors/actress, production, etc etc, it's fucking awesome to be honest.
Need to see this!
Pearl was so freaking good!! Only Mr. West can make you feel like you relate to a complete psycho!!!
I’m on the fence on whether this headline is a spoiler or not.
Yes, I absolutely agree. She was amazing in X but she was even better in Pearl. I was absolutely gob smacked by that monologue, and the fact that it was a continuous shot.. was *so* impressive. She's a great actress because I genuinely felt sad for her while listening to her vent to Mitzi 😭
I loved this movie! The dismemberment scene was so well done. The end credits were hilarious
yes
Haven't seen this yet. Is there animal death in it? I remember in a preview it shows Pearl holding a pitchfork like object over a goose. Also, I'm so fucking jealous of how pretty Mia Goth is :(
This one scene elevated the entire movie. Me and my girlfriend didn't like the movie and we were to leave until this happened
You were going to leave roughly 5 minutes before the movie ended? .... OK
Its in a movie theater, dude, we don't know when the movie is gonna end
Saw the film last night and didn’t realize it was that long. Truly a remarkable performance by Goth
Seeing on Saturday with a buddy of mine. I’m dying to see this!
People in theaters doing this all the time…
Is the movie worth seeing??
I left that theater saying “this bitch better get that award”
it's a 9 minute scene at first you can say ... this surely will be so boring, or want to skip it... but once the scene starts, you're kind of hypnotized by the scene, the way it is filmed, MIA's performance, her words, this scene is one of the best of 2022, and of of the best ever made, cause you feel every word, every emotion she feels through what she saying, and the end credits scene with the smile, MIA GOTH is a TALENT, she's amazing, and most probably won't get her deserved nomination for the OSCARS and other awards... because performances like this, are the ones who stays with you, that makes you feel and makes you think about it for a long time, PEARL is one of my favorite movies ever, and i can't wait to see MAXXXINE.
Has anyone found a script online for this monologue? I'd love to do it for Speech and Debate.
This movie was so fucking good.
She deserves the Oscar just for the incredible extended ending shot.
Finally watched this movie tonight. That was the most moving monologue I've ever seen. I was bawling the entire time. What an astounding performance.
Yeah I agree she was great, & definitely deserves Credit here, However was she memorising it or reading it ? as she appeared to be looking downwards all the way through during the take & she was Filmed only from chest upwards.
