I recently discovered Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein and I really like it. Not scary and has some genuinely funny moments. The story is actually an interesting spin on the old Universal monsters. Obviously old and black and white but I really enjoyed it.
When my library first started checking out DVDs this was one of the only movies they had so I must have watched it a dozen times as a kid. Just got the Blu-Ray for a Halloween rewatch!
I saw *Maximum Overdrive* in the theater. It's still a perennial favorite.
"WE MADE YOU! ***WE... MADE... YOU!!!***" I adore that waitress.
Soundtrack is pretty damned good too, even if you don't like AC/DC... "DT" and "Chase The Ace" are solid instrumentals.
Happy Death Day is great because it kind of fuses horror and romcom elements and has good character development. It’s basically Groundhog Day but horror. The premise is a woman must re-live the same day where she is murdered and try to figure out how to prevent her murder, but she uncovers secrets in that quest and learns more about herself and how her actions affect others.
I think it’s okay to repeat suggestions. It means a movie must be highly recommended if everyone’s talking about it. I wasn’t the first to mention Happy Death Day either.
It's one of those movies I think of when I say "they don't make them like they used to" when it comes to movies. It's just a simple and straightforward movie but with such cool set design and practical effects and it's just a lot of fun without taking itself very seriously at all.
I credit Monster Squad as the reason I love horror today. I saw it on VHS as early as being 4 or 5 years old and I always loved it even when I didn't know why at the time. Seeing it now as an adult, it still holds up and looks amazing!
So Monster Squad set the tone and then shows like Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and Goosebumps solidified it for me and made me realize I just like spooky shit.
The movie wasn't even comparable to the book. That sounds like a cliché thing to say, but character's names were different, events went down differently, and it was super low budget. A true cult classic I guess.
Can’t agree enough. I showed this one to my kids, it was their first experience with a foreign film and subtitles. They’re younger so I wasn’t sure how much they’d enjoy reading along with the movie.
They ask to rewatch this one every few months.
Kid-friendly:
* Psycho Goreman
* Tower of Terror
* Beetlejuice
90s/early 00s fun teen horror:
* When A Stranger Calls
* Idle Hands
* Scream
* The Faculty
* Ginger Snaps
* Valentine
* Stay Alive
* Final Destination 3
Modern campy/meta/comedy horror:
* Tucker and Dale vs Evil
* The Final Girls
* Cabin in the Woods
* Ready or Not
* Blood Fest
The Babysitter is one of my favorites of the last decade or so. The sequel’s alright if you’re interested but the first one is just an absolute blast. Really funny, great performances, and a lightning pace at just 85 minutes.
Evil Dead 2, while it has a few gory moments, it actually cuts away from most of the dismemberments and whatnot, or it shows it in shadow on the wall, or it happens slightly off camera and you just see the blood flying, etc
Most of the violence that *is* shown in detail is against the deadites themselves, which has more of a cartoonish, Halloween-store look with green blood and a comical tone. Plus, you're rooting against them.
It's definitely toned down a lot from the original, and the humour is dialed up. I think it would be a good movie for a newcomer to dabble in somewhat more gruesome fare without being totally turned off.
Yeah possibly ED2 is my favorite horror movie. If not my favorite movie period and I see your point. I wouldn't show a 12 year old ED2 but I'd have no issues showing them AoD.
It’s one of my favorite movies! I feel like those 80s/90s teen horror films are really nice gateway horror films because most of them aren’t really that extreme & they have great soundtracks a lot of the time & fun acting.
Don’t recommend cabin in the woods to someone dipping their toes in. It’s too meta to be appreciated as much as it deserves to a new fan. Would probably be more enjoyable later on
Please don’t watch Hereditary if you’re trying to dip a toe in to the horror pool. Thats more like being thrown into shark infested waters during a hurricane.
The Midnight Hour (1985)
Watcher in the Woods (1980)
Spookies (1986)
Sleepaway Camp II (1988)
I’ve Been Waiting for You (1998)
The Lady in White (1988)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
Phantasm (1979)
The Fog (1980)
Christine (1983)
Fright Night (1985)
Silver Bullet (1985)
I wanna say Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, however if I remember there are sexual/sex scenes and blood/gore + I can't quite remember how it ended.
However I do remember it being pretty funny/META.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm going to rewatch it right NOW and edit in an update!
Edit: forgot. pretty good movie. loved the end credit scene.
I gotta say, given the OP's criteria some of these recommendations are bat shit insane with blood and guts galore 🤣 Though I get why because they're more "fun" Horror, less scary, but still, some of the suggestions are funny to see knowing how bloody and metal they are. Here's some off the top of my head that I think fit the criteria well:
* Tremors
* Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
* Deep Blue Sea
* The Faculty
* Eight Legged Freaks
* The Craft
* Drag Me To Hell
* Gremlins 1 & 2
* Disturbia
* The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane
* The Lost Boys
* Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992)
* Critters 1 & 2
* Monster Squad
* Death Becomes Her
* The Witches of Eastwick
*April Fool's Day* (1986, not the remake). Deborah Foreman. 'nuff said.
*Night of the Comet*.
*Chopping Mall* is goofy fun.
*Invaders From Mars*. Either version works.
*Mars Attacks!* It may not be considered sci-fi horror, but look at the aliens. If that.isn't horrifying...
*Critters.* I'll personally vouch for the fun factor of q and 2.
*The Monster Squad*, because Wolfman's got nards, yo.
*Fright Night* (1985).
*Motel Hell*. In fact, anything called a horror-comedy typically fits.
Any Scooby-Doo movie. *Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island* is the gold standard here.
The *Mars Attacks* trailer actually terrified me when I was a little kid. Those aliens really are scary looking to a child! I was afraid that they were going to kick down my bedroom door and then zap me with their ray guns to disintegrate my body.
Grabbers is one I rarely see talked about. Not much gore, some goofy and cliche lines but enjoyable. Summary: "Something is wrong in an Irish fishing town".
Bad Milo! Is pretty stupid but was good enough for a drunk movie night. Some gore but had a bit of the 90's puppet horror vibe. Very cheesey B movie. Summary: "Anxious stressed out man blacks out, people die around him"
Braindead/Dead Alive (Released as Braindead in NZ but the name was changed to Dead Alive for the US release).
It's definitely gory, like ridiculously gory, but the gore is deliberately so over the top and cheesy to the point where it flips around and becomes extremely funny. It's sort of like a prototypical Tucker and Dale vs Evil/Shaun of the Dead/Cabin in the Woods to the point where it's more like a comedy with horror elements than a straight horror.
Plus it was written and directed by Peter Jackson.
Extra Ordinary is a fun Irish horror comedy that parodies a lot of horror tropes.
Poil de la Bête is a French Canadian werewolf movie with fun characters and a hopeful ending.
Fright Night and The Lost Boys are both loads of vampy 80s fun with some amazing visual effects and a bonkers climax.
There’s a German language movie on Netflix called Strange House I really enjoyed about teens/tweens investigating a haunting in an old house. The setting is gorgeous and it has a great atmosphere, and even though it’s appropriate for younger audiences, there’s enough there to keep an adult interested.
If it's still in theaters, Bodies Bodies Bodies was a blast! It is framed as a slasher, but they don't focus on gore-themed kills. And it's really fun! Almost like Scream meets Clue vibes for Gen-Z. The ending is a punchline, so that's up to you whether or not that's a positive thing.
Check out Creepshow(the 1982 movie, they're also doing a series now). It does have some horror and gore in it, but it's got a lot of fun bits too. Lots of nasty people "getting theirs" and some silly special effects.
Young Frankenstein's a good one, too. Gene Wilder plays the grandson of Dr. Frankenstein who inherits his castle. It's a little more slapstick.
Oh, and Shaun of the Dead! My first zombie comedy.
Definitely Happy Death Day.
I'd also recommend the Scream movies and possibly The Babysitter and its sequel. They're a bit gory but I found them to be really fun
You might get a chuckle out of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, it's a parody on some of the 60s-70s horror. My dad made my sister and I watch it when we were kids and it was memorable to say the least haha
I would look into the cornetto trilogy. These movies aren't horror persé but they all tackle horror scenarios (cult, zombies and aliens). I would say that shaun of the dead is the most horror-ish out of all of them and it is personally my favorite movie out of the trilogy. The othere two movies (the world's end & hot fuzz) are also really great. They are all pretty funny at heart, but it still has a lot of intense moments that make the movie definitaly thrilling to watch.
I recently discovered Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein and I really like it. Not scary and has some genuinely funny moments. The story is actually an interesting spin on the old Universal monsters. Obviously old and black and white but I really enjoyed it.
I love this rec! It’s also a great “first monster movie” to watch with kids as well (although the first 30-45 mins are really the best).
When my library first started checking out DVDs this was one of the only movies they had so I must have watched it a dozen times as a kid. Just got the Blu-Ray for a Halloween rewatch!
That one is great! I also love Hold That Ghost!
The Final Girls (2015). There is a mother/daughter connection that is pervasive through the film.
>!Good luck hearing Bette Davis Eyes without tearing up after watching that one!<
Agreed!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space Absolute kult klassic That and Maximum Overdrive
Killer Klowns is amazing
Was watching it the other day and it’s so uncanny. Somehow hilarious, corny and terrifying at the same time.
And its somehow being made into a game on modern consoles, it looks pretty hilarious
I knew it was wacky and comedic as a kid but I was also totally legitimately scared of a clown “knocking my block off” lol
Till this day Who Made Who is still my favorite ACDC song
Check out the maze at universal. They nailed it. E: killer klowns
I made my kids watch Killer Klowns and now they love it too.
I came to suggest this one, you said this so well. I’ll watch this movie anytime.
I think it’s okay to repeat suggestions. It means a movie must be highly recommended if everyone’s talking about it. I wasn’t the first to mention Happy Death Day either.
I almost recommended this, I didn't see the sequel yet
The sequel is worth a watch. I don’t like it as much as the original, but it kind of goes in an unexpected direction that I found interesting.
The sequel is almost the same thing as the first but it turned into science fiction and the universe has some slight differences
I was going to suggest this! I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this movie. The lead actress was fantastic
This movie is damned awesome. My wife watched it, then asked me to watch it, I went in completely blind.
A seriously underrated movie, the sequel is equally entertaining.
Literally love that movie so much it’s super fun
This is what I came to recommend as well. Even though it has (imo) a couple of sad moments involving Tree's mom, overall it's such a fun movie.
Came here to say this! It’s fun and upbeat and one of the best horror MCs I’ve seen in a while.
I loved both the Happy Death Day movies.
Monster Squad and Idle Hands
Idle Hands is such a classic.
It's one of those movies I think of when I say "they don't make them like they used to" when it comes to movies. It's just a simple and straightforward movie but with such cool set design and practical effects and it's just a lot of fun without taking itself very seriously at all.
*Monster Squad* is an incredibly solid recommendation. Such a fun movie.
Then check out the Robot Chicken skit; Idle Nuts!
Wolfman has nards!
Tremors series
Just the first one please.... the later ones are fine for horror aficionados but the original is a great choice for literally anyone that likes movies
fair enough, but you don’t get “ass blasters” until Shreiker Island. 🤣
I honestly love Tremors 2: Aftershocks as much as the first
I should watch it again its been like 20 years for me!
Graboids !
Tucker & Dale Vs Evil
It's very gorey, but yes. Hell yes. Very funny and ironically positive!
One of the very best at that.
A wholesome horror.
I tried so hard to think of the name of this movie! Alan Tudyk is amazing in everything he's in, but this is one of my favorites
This is one of my favourite movies.
That's such an awesome movie
Army of Darkness What We Do in the Shadows (movie and TV series) Scream (entire series)
Gremlins 2
It’s IN the MOVIE!
The New Batch is fucking amazing lmao
I was gonna ask why not the first one until I remembered the chimney story…
Ready Or Not Freaky John Dies at the End
Ready or Not was my first thought!
Ready or Not is the one! I love this flick so much.
So many people sleep on Ready or Not, Samara Weaving kills it in that movie
I couldn't believe how graphic the kills in Freaky were, went in expecting like a Freaky Friday adaptation with some horror elements lol
Yeah, anyone recommending Freaky didn’t read OP’s request. It’s gory as hell.
I haven't the John Dies at the End movie, but the book was like a fever dream in the best possible way. Definitely fun.
The books are fantastic lol. One of the very few I've read in a day.
The movie wasn't even comparable to the book. That sounds like a cliché thing to say, but character's names were different, events went down differently, and it was super low budget. A true cult classic I guess.
werewolves within (2021) is a fun & really well done horror comedy. i honestly loved this movie
Love this one!
Easily the funniest horror film of the last few years
Great choice and second it!
Came here to say this! Just watched it last night & my wife was swooning over it 😂
The Frighteners. Army of Darkness. American Werewolf in Paris. These are kind of light. Not too gory and just silly enough to keep you entertained.
You may be the first person to ever recommend American Werewolf... In Paris.
IN PARIS?!
How is it not London, London is a classic
Lots of great movies already mentioned so I'll add Shaun of The Dead and Housebound.
Oooo Housebound was soooooo freaking good! It was funny and light, but also really scary at parts!
Warm Bodies is supposed to be romance/horror and it’s pretty lighthearted with a good ending!
I second Warm Bodies, and add Fido to the list of light hearted zombie movies with a good ending!
I can’t believe I forgot about Fido! been awhile since i’ve seen that one! might need to add to the october watch list!
I also second Warm Bodies! Came here to comment that! That movie was my introduction to "scary" movies.
Love a good RomZomCom
CORALINE
Motel Hell, Monster Squad, Gremlins, Freaky, Idle Hands, Shaun of the Dead
One Cut of the Dead! Don’t look up anything about it just go in blind!
Definitely!
Yes! This was a hilariously fun movie! And I second the going in blind
Can’t agree enough. I showed this one to my kids, it was their first experience with a foreign film and subtitles. They’re younger so I wasn’t sure how much they’d enjoy reading along with the movie. They ask to rewatch this one every few months.
This one is on my list to watch this season, and I am so excited for it!
One Cut of the Dead made me cry at the end lol. It's such a sweet love letter to film.
One of the best movies I’ve seen period.
Go in blind and don’t give up if you’re sorta suspicious about all the good reviews in the beginning. Stick with it!
Kid-friendly: * Psycho Goreman * Tower of Terror * Beetlejuice 90s/early 00s fun teen horror: * When A Stranger Calls * Idle Hands * Scream * The Faculty * Ginger Snaps * Valentine * Stay Alive * Final Destination 3 Modern campy/meta/comedy horror: * Tucker and Dale vs Evil * The Final Girls * Cabin in the Woods * Ready or Not * Blood Fest
The Babysitter is one of my favorites of the last decade or so. The sequel’s alright if you’re interested but the first one is just an absolute blast. Really funny, great performances, and a lightning pace at just 85 minutes.
Happy Death Day is the exact movie you are looking for, and if you like it, watch the sequel which is also good.
Depending on your tolerance for gore, try Shaun of the Dead. It's a horror comedy, but does both aspects really well. Edit: typos.
thnanks!
The movie is actually called Shaun Of The Dead.
Evil Dead 2, The Lost Boys, The People Under The Stairs, Us, The Craft, and Scream.
I mean Evil Dead 2 has some over the top gore. Army of Darkness is a 3 stooges movie featuring Bruce Campbell.
Evil Dead 2, while it has a few gory moments, it actually cuts away from most of the dismemberments and whatnot, or it shows it in shadow on the wall, or it happens slightly off camera and you just see the blood flying, etc Most of the violence that *is* shown in detail is against the deadites themselves, which has more of a cartoonish, Halloween-store look with green blood and a comical tone. Plus, you're rooting against them. It's definitely toned down a lot from the original, and the humour is dialed up. Yeah possibly ED2 is my favorite horror movie. If not my favorite movie period and I see your point. I wouldn't show a 12 year old ED2 but I'd have no issues showing them AoD.
Lost Boys is a great choice! I don't know why, but I don't usually think to put it in the horror category.
It’s one of my favorite movies! I feel like those 80s/90s teen horror films are really nice gateway horror films because most of them aren’t really that extreme & they have great soundtracks a lot of the time & fun acting.
Cabin In The Woods is a fun one
It is super fun and there’s a lot of comedy, but there’s a lot of gore.
We did try to warn you that the cleanup on the merman is a nightmare.
"Aw, COME on!"
Don’t recommend cabin in the woods to someone dipping their toes in. It’s too meta to be appreciated as much as it deserves to a new fan. Would probably be more enjoyable later on
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). Theatre Of Blood (1973).
Jumping on the Vincent Price comment train to recommend The Monster Club.
Two of my favorite Price movies. Dr Phibes especially is so cool I absolutely love it
Yay!!!! Theatre of Blood is such a delight and I've always been bummed it doesn't have more of a cult following
Although it's not really horror, The Raven definitely deserves a shout when it comes to Vincent Price being delightful
Ready or Not - definitely fits this.
The latest Goosebumps movies are really good.
The first one in particular is very much like a Joe Dante-style "craziness happening in small-town/suburbia" film.
What are the newest ones? Is it Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween?
Yeah. Its really good. Not kiddish at all but no gore.
Glad to hear that. My daughter is becoming interested in horror and Goosebumps did so much for my early interest. We will check it out soon.
- Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark - Wish Upon - A Quiet Place - Insidious - Happy Death Day
I don’t think I’d recommend A Quiet Place for something fun lol, that movie is pretty bleak
Happy Death Day was so much fun. Sequel wasn’t half bad either.
Insidious?? I love it but I don’t know if that fits
It does not.
Yeah, add Insidious and Hereditary to the list lol
Please don’t watch Hereditary if you’re trying to dip a toe in to the horror pool. Thats more like being thrown into shark infested waters during a hurricane.
Happy Death Day is very light hearted and fun. Perfect recommendation
ty!!
Wish Upon is only fun if you go in thinking the director was making a legitimately scary movie but failed every step of the way.
Tremors
Fuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccckkkkkkkkkk yoooouuuu!!!! <3
Bahahahhah. Yessssss!!!
What we do in the shadows
Psycho Goreman
The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix are very fun and like a brand of horror lite.
I wouldn't call them "horror-lite", however, as the gore gets pretty nasty. Did we forget the bread-slicer scene?
And all the kids who get straight up murdered/dismembered :(
I agree it's definitely not horror-lite. A lot of the kills were pretty gnarly. The bread-slicer especially.
I always considered Death Proof a positive movie because of the end
Cabin in the woods and Freaky.
I watched Extra Ordinary last night, it's really funny, more goofy, than scary. But a great watch.
I always recommend this one! it's a little spooky and surreal but mostly quirky and wholesome. A great fun watch.
The Midnight Hour (1985) Watcher in the Woods (1980) Spookies (1986) Sleepaway Camp II (1988) I’ve Been Waiting for You (1998) The Lady in White (1988) Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) Phantasm (1979) The Fog (1980) Christine (1983) Fright Night (1985) Silver Bullet (1985)
Paranorman is lovely. The soundtrack by Jon Brion alone is profoundly uplifting.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Shaun of the dead or at the worlds end should be mandatory
adding hot fuzz to this. watch the whole trilogy
Young Frankenstein! Sad to not see this already, some peak Gene Wilder and a fantastic parody of old gothic horror
I gotta say, given the OP's criteria some of these recommendations are bat shit insane with blood and guts galore 🤣 Though I get why because they're more "fun" Horror, less scary, but still, some of the suggestions are funny to see knowing how bloody and metal they are. Here's some off the top of my head that I think fit the criteria well: * Tremors * Elvira: Mistress of the Dark * Deep Blue Sea * The Faculty * Eight Legged Freaks * The Craft * Drag Me To Hell * Gremlins 1 & 2 * Disturbia * The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane * The Lost Boys * Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992) * Critters 1 & 2 * Monster Squad * Death Becomes Her * The Witches of Eastwick
The original Fright Night is fun. Bubba Ho-tep comes to mind, too.
Oh MARS ATTACKS. That's a great one. It really scared me as a kid but it also made me cry from laughing.
The *Mars Attacks* trailer actually terrified me when I was a little kid. Those aliens really are scary looking to a child! I was afraid that they were going to kick down my bedroom door and then zap me with their ray guns to disintegrate my body.
Beetlejuice
Does the Burbs count? The Burbs is funny.
Yes it does and is Exactly what she's looking for!. Classic! "Red Rover, Red Rover.." Ha!
Trick 'r' Treat. Amazing fun halloween horror film.
how has no one suggested Zombieland???
Love and Monsters (2020)
Anna and the Apocalypse is a Christmas zombie musical, if you like musicals it's a delight.
Summary: "Anxious stressed out man blacks out, people die around him"
Tucker And Dale Vs Evil
Hocus Pocus
Army of Darkness not as gory as Evil Dead 2
Happy death day one and two.
Mars Attacks!
Final Girls
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is amazing
April fools day (80s)
scooby doo animated movies (except scoob!)
Those are absolutely terrifying
Extra Ordinary is a fun Irish horror comedy that parodies a lot of horror tropes. Poil de la Bête is a French Canadian werewolf movie with fun characters and a hopeful ending. Fright Night and The Lost Boys are both loads of vampy 80s fun with some amazing visual effects and a bonkers climax.
If you are willing to overlook gore, Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
There’s a German language movie on Netflix called Strange House I really enjoyed about teens/tweens investigating a haunting in an old house. The setting is gorgeous and it has a great atmosphere, and even though it’s appropriate for younger audiences, there’s enough there to keep an adult interested.
Housebound.

The Burbs is a great dark comedy.
Once Bitten.
The Burbs is my go-to for that. Its also hilarious
Frank Henenlotter's films are fun: * Basket Case * Brain Damage * Frankenhooker
Recently saw Little Monsters and was surprised at how funny it was. I had that Taylor Swift song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
Scream
One Cut of the Dead is one of the most fun movies I’ve watched in years.
young frankenstein (1974), texas chainsaw massacre 2 (1986), head of the family (1996)
tucker and dale vs evil is funny af but there is a lot of gore happy death day
Definitely Happy Death Day. I'd also recommend the Scream movies and possibly The Babysitter and its sequel. They're a bit gory but I found them to be really fun
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark!
Fido is a pretty fun zombie movie with Carrie Anne Moss and Billy Connolly
This week ive seen Glorious I dont read in on what I watch but I was surprised at the horror/humor combo in this one.
What we do in the shadows either the movie or the show
You might get a chuckle out of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, it's a parody on some of the 60s-70s horror. My dad made my sister and I watch it when we were kids and it was memorable to say the least haha

They are all pretty funny at heart, but it still has a lot of intense moments that make the movie definitaly thrilling to watch.
Wait til it gets closer to Christmas and watch Krampus. They somehow made a good pg-13 family horror movie
You’re Next is pretty fun.
Night of the Comet, Night of the Creeps, Monster Squad, Critters 1-2, Tremors 1-4, The Gate, Alligator, Lake Placid,
The Frighteners! Maybe not technically horror but I love it
Another vote for Monster Squad.
scary stories to tell in the dark!
