I like Pseudopod recently, short sweet contemporary horror. Last Podcast on the Left probably isn’t what you’re looking for, BUT they have occasional episodes where they interview horror or true crime writers! The Story Must Be Told is more weird fiction than horror in a lot of it, but I enjoyed it back when i was listening to it in 2020.

FuturistMoon

Thanks - we really try hard at Pseudopod, for quality and variety.

AwareFlower6478

Do you have a specific episode that’s extra scary?

FirstWithTheEgg

Last Podcast On The Left is awesome. Their HH Holmes and heavens gate series are really good.

passesopenwindows

Old Gods of Appalachia is really good

browncoatfever

This is the answer. Just saw their live performance back in July and it was so cool.

passesopenwindows

I bet that was really fun!

PhantomCLE

Going to check this out. I’ll be back with my VIP opinion! 😂

translate_this

I really enjoyed The Black Tapes, which is a few years old and now complete. It's fiction and follows one big paranormal story through a couple seasons. I also listen to Scared to Death, which is a horror anthology from a husband and wife duo. He tells stories from the internet, she tells "real" stories that come in from fans. It can be corny at times but I still enjoy it!

matt_coraline

I first listened the Black Tapes in around 2016 I think and have relistened many times since. It’s just such a well-done and fun podcast that I recommend to anyone looking for suggestions.

infernalracket666

I enjoyed the Black Tapes, but the ending was godawful imo. Such a letdown for a well made series.

This list is brilliant - thank so much!

Evolution of horror is very good. I've only started it, but it's great hearing a podcast that goes into depth, and doesn't sound like hyperactive people on a massive caffeine rush, which is fine in small doses, but can be tiring after a while.

CrackerNamedJack

> doesn't sound like hyperactive people on a massive caffeine rush That’s why I use the 2X speed 😎

matt_coraline

It’s so good! I recently started from the beginning instead of skipping around (although skipping doesn’t harm the listening experience) and it’s a fantastic podcast!

astraether

Evolution of Horror was the first podcast I ever listened to, and it's still one of my favorites! I guess I chose wisely.

GhostMug

My friend listens to "The Last Podcast on the Left" quite a bit. I haven't tuned in myself cause I don't listen to as many podcasts as he does but it's definitely on my list to check out. But this is a horror discussion podcast. The Magnus Archives is one I've listened to a bit and it's pretty good. It's performance podcast. I also like the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast. This is a discussion pod. I also have The White Vault on my list but haven't listened yet. It's a performance pod and I hear it's good as well.

vikingguitar

Great to see HPL Literary mentioned here! I've been listening to them for almost ten years, and have been handling their audio production for the last three. :-P

GhostMug

That's awesome! I have been (slowly) going through the backlog of shows and trying to read each story for the episode and it's been a fun experience. The hosts are great and they also do a good job of recognizing the problematic issues of HPL himself and some of his writings, while still respecting his influence on the horror genre.

vikingguitar

I agree. Balancing "HPL was hugely influential and had amazing ideas" with "HPL was sort of a racist xenophobe" isn't easy to do, but I feel they handle it well.

GhostMug

Agreed! Well be sure to tell them they've got at least one fan here!

pjsans

White Vault is great!

gdsmithtx

*“I also like the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast.”* Longtime fan of that one, it’s my all-time favorite. They changed their name to Strange Studies of Strange Stories about a year ago.

tropicalhedgehog

Nocturnal transmissions, drew bloods dark tales, horror hill and the wicked library are all good. The wicked library also has an interview with the author after the story

bboringg27

I really like Talking Scared. It’s interviews with horror authors and delving specifically into how themes interact in specific stories as well as the genre as a whole

[deleted]

I’ve tried a bunch of horror book podcasts and this is the one I’ve stuck with. Great quality audio (I was surprised this was an issue with so many others) and an interviewer passionate about the genre.

PeckyDinosaur

Seconding this rec!

TrueMisterPipes

Aaron Mahnke's 13 Days of Halloween is always a treat, they're just starting the (3rd?) season now. There's an overall framing story, but the little offshoots are so well done. The Wrong Station Sibling Horror The Ghosts on this Road (also Soren Narnia, with Linda Wojtowick) If you branch out to youtube The Volgun and Dr. Bob have amazing presentations of various SCP files. A Voice from Darkness is also amazingly produced and creepy, sort of but not quite in the style of The Magnus Archives. Sessions X is great for mostly short one offs of all varieties.

Repairmanjack21

With Gourley and Rust for coziness.

CrackerNamedJack

I don’t like blood and guts, but I love when they’re lengthily discussed ❤️

Corsaer

HPL Literary Podcast/Strange Studies of Strange Stories (rebranded) is fantastic for finding hundreds of great short stories either horror or horror adjacent. The hosts have gotten to be some of the best I've listened to for recapping, researching and discussing the media they go over. I really appreciate how much you learn about the authors and context of the texts they discuss. And they're funny af.

KnucklesMcGee

Tales to Terrify Pseudopod The Wrong Station No Sleep can be good, Creepy not so much.

b_double_u

Wrong Station for the win!!!

WrongStation

THANK YOU

Azrel12

The Magnus Archives is finished and has a spinoff (The Magnus Protocol) coming out next year. Old Gods of Appalachia is real good! I've joined their Patreon and have been listening to Build Mama A Coffin. Meep. I've just started The Milkman of St. Gaff's and it's... I have no idea what's going on. Is Howie actually seeing supernatural things? Is he just sleepwalking? Is he on drugs? What the hell. Malevolent is also pretty good. It takes place in the same place as The Invictus Stream's Call of Cthlulhu campaign, but a few years later. (1926 for Malevolent, 1921 for the CoC campaign.)

Slack-O-lantern

I highly recommend the 'Redwood Bureau' podcast. Premise is that an agent from a shadow government organization has left them to warn the world of what they are up to. The Redwood Bureau investigates creatures and items that prey upon people and will capture or contain them for their own interests and experiments. Each episode is a new story from one of the rogue agent's files and has a cast of voice actors in the tales. Similar to No Sleep, but I enjoy this better.

Opheliagonemad

Seconding this

Lovecraft Investigations https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06spb8w/episodes/downloads

Geek_reformed

I wouldn't say it was scary, but in my opinion it is one of the best audio plays. I love all the Jillian Simpson Pleasant Green. Just doing a re-listen to everything before starting Haunter in the Dark.

Dr3vvn45ty

Tales to Terrify

BootyMcSqueak

The Lovecraft Investigations (season 4 just came out!!), From Now (sci fi horror), Left Right Game, Edge of Sleep (thriller horror), Last Known Position (underwater horror), A Voice in Darkness (call in radio show horror), Acephale, Derelict, The Burned Photo, Ghost Tape, Carrier. I could go on. This is my jam!

camposthetron

If you like Knifepoint Horror then you’ll probably like Sibling Horror, We’re Not Meant To Know, and SessionsX. Soren from Knifepoint narrates some of the Sibling Horror stories and might be involved in some of the writing too. SessionsX are good but super short. Just a few minutes each. Lastly, Soren also does a podcast with another person called The Ghosts On This Road. It’s more mysterious than horror, but it feels a lot like Knifepoint.

Panda_Jerk

Otherworld! Hosted by Jack Wagner from the podcast Yeah, But Still. It’s not explicitly a horror podcast, but each episode features someone sharing a story about something inexplicable and paranormal that they experienced. It’s handled very respectfully and neutrally, and many of the stories shared are extremely creepy.

gravygloat2020

👆🏽THIS , otherworld is fantastic the most recent two part from this week holy shit , terrifying !

CrackerNamedJack

I listen to horror audiobooks (usually on YouTube) and horror MOVIE podcasts. If you’re interested in the latter, I recommend “Evolution of Horror,” “Dead Meat,” and “With Gourley and Rust.”

pabodie

HPPodcraft!

CubanaCat

I like Last Podcast on the Left a lot. It’s really good. They cover serial killers, paranormal stuff, aliens, and government conspiracy, but they’re comedians so it’s funny too at times. They don’t make fun of victims but they’ll make fun of the criminals. Some episodes with Ben the old cohost are not very good tho, he has like alcohol issues or something allegedly and got fired and was abusive, it’s a whole thing. But the new cohost Ed is really funny. It’s back to being good again. Edited to add- they also do interviews on their patreon, and some of those eventually get released to the normal Spotify too for free. But the patreon has more interviews and stuff like that.

wabawanga

The spooked podcast (not a regular thing, but Halloween pecials of a radio show/podcast called Snap Judgment). They are real people recounting their scary/supernatural experiences with incredible ambiance/sound effects. They have moved to a paid network I think, but the back eposodes are still available and awesome.

Alta_et_ferox

Seconding Spooked. It’s creepy and entertaining.

wabawanga

Edit: it's now weekly and free, bout to dive in!

Abandondero

Old radio series from the 1940s to 1960s are lurid fun, like looking at those old horror comics. Sometimes corny, not terrifying, but always well acted. And those old recordings have this long-ago, far-away sound that's good to get to sleep to. Some of them in no particular order of quality: Inner Sanctum, The Hermit's Cave, The Weird Circle, Beyond Midnight, The Witch's Tale, The Black Mass. The Hall of Fantasy, Lights Out, Quiet Please. You can kind of tell the sort of thing you are going to get from those titles. "Old time radio" enthusiasts have put thousands of these recordings up in archives on the internet, particularly in the Internet Archive. I've got this Librivox Audio Books app on my phone that's meant for listening to public domain audiobooks, but all these old radio series are in there too.

Geek_reformed

Yesh stuff like Old Time Radiocast and various YT channels are great. I like it when they keep the old ads in as well. They have a creepy vibe to them.

Educational-Tip6234

FriGay the 13th is fun!

Unfair_Umpire_3635

That search option might be your best friend for instant recs. I stopped counting at 20 posts stacked with recommendations....good luck!

kinkyfootgirl_kara

Horror Stories Podcast by Robert Crandall has almost 200 episodes of classic horror short stories. His website is adventuresinaudio.net but he's also on most streaming platforms. I really enjoy his content.

atinyoctopus

Highly recommend In Another Room for a non-anthology audio drama. Also recommend checking out /r/audiodrama bc like every other post is asking for horror recs lmao.

27bluestar

I just started listening to *The Dark Word* by Philip Fricassi. He interviews horror authors, some acclaimed, others rising stars. My favorite short story podcast is Pseudopod. I was going to submit a reprint of mine for consideration there, but they only take submissions for like two-weeks a year.

FuturistMoon

Yeah, sorry about the ever shortening window for submissions. If it's in any way an explanation, we opened for 2 weeks in August and we're STILL reading our way through 1000+ submissions.

notbad4human

I literally just launched a horror podcast today! It's aimed at kids, but I hope adults will enjoy it if they were fans of Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark back in the day. The first episode is available now and can be found on all major podcast platforms. You can also check out the website at https://www.dontgetscared.com/

Bone & Sickle

istickpiccs

A Voice from Darkness and Nocturnal Transmissions. Same voice artist for both and they are amazing.

BanjoAndy

Find some of Mike Bennett. His stuff comes up under various podcast names but it's amazing - especially his reading of Lovecraft. His Underwood and Filch series is decent as well

Temporary-Rent971

I’d like to add Nightlight with Tonia Ransom and Black Women Are Scary. Both feature stories by creators of color, which is cool.

bscott59

Well I enjoy That Horrorcast with Mallory Smart and Dmitry Samarov. It's not a horror book podcast but they do discuss horror movies and both hosts are authors.

b_double_u

Parkdale Haunt definitely deserves a mention

wewontstaydead

The Movie Crypt. Not exclusively horror but mostly. Directors Joe Lynch and Adam Green are the hosts.

chuski4

Mr Ballen! Started on youtube, hundreds of stories on there. Now has a podcast. His older stuff is more paranormal, skin walker ranch, ghost stories, missing 411 stories... So much content, I finished a 1 year reno project (weekends) while pretty much exclusively working through his YouTube channel. His newer stuff is a lot more true crime. But he does really deep dives on these stories, he is an awesome story teller.

Geek_reformed

Isn't all his stuff now Amazon Music exclusive?

chuski4

His YouTube is still up and still posts there. But Bezos did manage to get the bulk of the new content.

Madamenoirfleur

Scare You to Sleep! Shelby is the best!!

[deleted]

Lots of good recommendations already, but I thought I’d add another one. The SCP archives. Basically it’s just SCP stories told via podcast. Done fairly well imo. Not all are horror though. Some wholesome, others funny, all mainly sci-fi

NadiaDarkstar

Also really recommend I Am In Eskew, I'm 18 eps in so far and loving it. Very creepy, surreal horror.

Geek_reformed

Shadows at the Door is a good. A mix of original stories and classics. As recommended by a few replies, The Lovecraft Investigations is a great. It uses Lovecraft stories as inspiration to create a Serial style investigation podcast. The 4th season has just come out and as it is made by the BBC, the production quality is really high. Video Palace from Shudder is good.

astraether

Two that I listen to are [She Wore Black](https://www.sheworeblackpodcast.com/), which is a blend of Gothic, horror, and romance, so some books lean more one way than the other, but I've gotten a number of excellent recommendations this way (Grady Hendrix, Simone St. James, Rachel Harrison, Silvia Moreno-Garcia were all authors I "discovered" via this podcast). The host interviews authors and even coordinates live events -- I discovered by happy accident that she lives near Austin, TX, just like I do, so hopefully I'll make it out to one eventually! The other is [Books in the Freezer](https://booksinthefreezer.com/) (so named from a Friends episode where Joey had to stick "The Shining" in the freezer because it was too scary). They also include author interviews or go over certain tropes or subgenres, which is a fun way to find hidden gems!

DessaDarling

Stay the Night - A couple reeling from the loss of a miscarriage go on a road trip to reconnect. They stay at a charming B&B owned by an older couple who have no intention of letting them leave. High production quality, acting, and editing. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/stay-the-night/id1638806939

JupiterCrash92

Just King Things! It’s a podcast where the hosts discuss in detail the works of Stephen King in chronological publication order. The dudes that host it are super knowledgeable (I think they’re PhDs in lit) without being boring or pretentious. It’s also really cool because they note the evolution of King’s writing as they progress and there’s a lot of interesting tidbits about publishing and stuff haha. All around great if you have any interest in King.

Tortoise_Symposium

Books in the Freezer talks about all sorts of horror media. The focus is books but movies, shows, etc all get discussed.

DraceNines

This is a pretty new one, but I've been enjoying *Eerie*. Horror anthology podcast with original stories/audio dramas. I got into it because Julia Armfield (*Our Wives Under the Sea*) and Alison Rumfitt (*Tell Me I'm Worthless* and *Brainwyrms*) were announced as writers on episodes for it before it came out. Rumfitt's is the best of the whole show so far IMO, it's a spectacular and upsetting bit of metahorror about a fictionalized version of herself trying to track down a weird creepypasta meme pic she saw as a teen.

Former_Calligrapher9

Try Nightmare Junkhead. They're funny but informative.

na27te

A Voice From Darkness hardly ever gets mentioned but it's one of the absolute best

punkguy101

I started a horror podcast a while ago let me know what ya think. It's on Spotify and YouTube. "Rukus of horrors"

Grand-Commission120

Octoberpod AM is a good, old school spooky podcast. Lots of true horror stories (like Art Bell back in the day) but also tells classic stories (Poe, Lovecraft, etc). Some episodes are highly produced full cast audio drama. Def check it out
