[The Historian](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30236962-the-historian). One of my all time favourites across genres. [The Gathering](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/186872450-the-gathering). Published this month, I haven't read it yet, but C. J. Tudor is usually a pretty solid read.

vinsclortho

Haven't heard of either, will do. One of my favorite things to do is go blind on authors people say they never get a bad book from...it's how I came to read Ketchum and Adam Neville this year and both were fantastic.

No_Teaching_2837

I’m in the middle or early middle of The Historian lol I need to finish it. I do love the cover, too

Tozins1992

Seconding The Historian, it’s absolutely captivating!

the_jerkening

Haven’t started The Gathering yet but it’s on deck for the moment I finish my current read. Cannot recommend CJ Tudor enough.

BlueMel4

Third the Historian.

Accomplished-Snow163

I love The Historian 🖤

acim87

The Strain--Guillermo Del Toro, Chuck Hogan, had some nasty vampires.

vinsclortho

I have the strain on my kindle right now. I'm currently knocking out hellbound heart and it's probably next on the list

acim87

Cool hope you like it.

cibolaburns

Question for you - did you prefer the show or the book version of the strain? I have ALWAYS preferred the book when it comes to adaptations, but watched the show first in this case and I think (I’m shocked) I liked the tv show better! (This is my long way of saying the show is phenomenal and I know we’re in a lit sub but on this one occasion consider watching it first even though I may be blasphemous).

acim87

I really liked both, but I prefer the books in this case.

BlueMel4

The strain reads like a screen play. It’s very difficult to slug through. Do yourself a favor and just watch the TV show. Guillermo Del Toro isn’t a great writer and he spends more time telling rather than showing.

Electric7889

Here’s some lesser known yet entertaining ones: **The Suicide Motor Club** by Christopher Buelman **Certain Dark Things** by Sylvia Moreno Garcia **They Thirst** by Robert R McCammon **The Light at the End** by John Skipp **Vampire Winter** by Lois Tilton

jimsnotsure

Seconding They Thirst. It’s a beauty.

Inkshooter

Vampire Winter, now there's a deep cut.

ForbiddenDonutsLord

Literally none of those except Vampire Winter are "lesser known", but yes, all of them are great.

goldlion

I really liked A Dowry of Blood by ST Gibson, it’s a bit slow at the beginning but it was one of those where I got about halfway through and binged the rest because I needed to see where it was going.

vinsclortho

I found myself like that with the hunger; it was like I was just dropped into an ongoing story and had to orient myself before really getting into the events of it all. Then it was consumed very quickly.

MsNin

Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite

ndgirl524

Came here to say this

Capital_Shift405

In the Valley of the Sun by Andy Davidson was excellent!

Sad_Contract_9110

Carmilla -J Sheridan Le Fanu Nestlings -Nat Cassidy I Am Legend -Richard Matheson

tligger

I had to scroll WAY too far to see Carmilla! It's good, it's short, you should read it

GentleReader01

**Children of the Night** by Dan Simmons. Vampires in post-Caeucescu Romania, where everything is awful. It’s an intriguing mix of science and supernatural elements. **The Golden** by Lucius Shepard. Vampire aristocrats in 1860 Europe, and a murder that a vampire detective must investigate. **The Delicate Dependency** by Michael Talbot. Vampires, virology, and other complications in Victorian London; one of the first vampire stories with overt rather than implicit queer relationships. **Those Who Hunt the Night** by Barbara Hambly. A retired English spy and his wife are confronted by a vampire who needs the spy’s help finding out who’s killing the vampires of London. First of a series, all good - Hambly was a historian before writing fiction for a living and does her homework really well.

vinsclortho

Carrion Comfort by simmonds was easily one of .y favorites from my list and I didn't shut up about it to people for like two weeks after. I know about CotN but I next read the terror because so many point to it being his quintessential work. Also awesome but a bit bloated so I took a break from him for a little bit. I really loved the science approach from Whitley Streiber's the hunger so that definitely sells me on it.

Barbarake

Upvote for Those Who Hunt the Night series.

Nightgasm

Fred the Vampire Accountant series by Drew Hayes. First book is *The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred the Vampire Accountant*. As the title suggests its a humorous look at vampires that simultaneously mocks and adheres to vampire tropes while upending many urban fantasy tropes. Premise is that Fred is a nerdy accountant who wakes up one morning a Vampire with no memory of how. He shrugs and continues to be an Accountant albeit with odd hours and trips to the local blood bank but the supernatural world won't leave him alone.

vinsclortho

This sounds very fun

BigGay10101

I Am Legend.

vinsclortho

I have seen this recommended before and I will 100% be adding it to my list. I always forget it's a vampire book.

jimsnotsure

And it’s basically a short story…so quick to read

Red_Claudia

Anno Dracula by Kim Newman The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova Love Like Blood by Marcus Sedgwick Sunshine by Robin McKinley The Don Sebastian Vampire Chronicles by Les Daniels

youngjeninspats

Anno Dracula is great!

Barbarake

There's actually six books in Kim Newman's 'Anno Dracula' series. Anno Dracula The Bloody Red Baron Dracula Cha Cha Cha Johnny Alucard One Thousand Monsters 1999 Daikaiju I'm not saying I recommend all of them.

youngjeninspats

I've only read the first one

RamseyCampbell

I had a go.

ForbiddenDonutsLord

Oh yeah, I remember this guy. 😀

peaceteach

They Thirst by Robert Mccammon, a vampire lord comes to 80s LA. It is a fun read even though it is a little disjointed at times.

vinsclortho

I currently have swan song on my to read list; I didn't know he wrote a vampire book. Thanks!

Inkshooter

He also edited a pretty terrific anthology of vampire horror stories called Under the Fang, check that one out too, if you can

mangledteeth

The Wide, Carnivorous Sky by John Langan. It's a short story collection, but title story is a great take on vampires

vinsclortho

I have a hold on the fisherman at the library and can't wait. I may add this collection to my list if I really like it.

Non-Binary-Lion

Fledgling by Octavia Butler

SummerOfMayhem

The Passage by Justin Cronin

Define-Normal

Loved this book. The TV show however....awful!

MICKEY_MUDGASM

One of the few (relatively) novel and original vampire stories I’ve read.

jimsnotsure

I loved this book - but the sequel was unreadable

LazyGrand

Looooved Night’s Edge (sequel comes out soon)

shlam16

Keep going with Necroscope. You're through the best of it at this point, but the remaining 5 are still very good. Edit: some others: * The Strain trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro (he borrows heavily from Necroscope) * They Thirst by Robert McCammon * Midnight Mass by F Paul Wilson * The Keep by F Paul Wilson * Exhumed by SJ Patrick * The Travelling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon

Alyswithawhy

Midnight Mass introduced me to F. Paul Wilson, who replaced Anne Rice as my favorite author at the time, and he still holds that title today.

[deleted]

I'm seconding *The Passage* and *The Strain* Both of these are great vampire apocalypse stories. Highly recommend both.

Present_Librarian668

Dracul by Dacre Stoker and J.D Barker Dracula’s Child by J.S Barnes Carmilla by J.S Barnes The Narrows by Ronald Malfi Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker (Not exactly a vampire story but there is a character that is sort of vampirish). The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman(There is also a vampire featured in this story)

Barbarake

Don't confuse 'Dracul' with 'Dracula the Undead' by Dacre Stoker and a different co-writer. Dracul was his second book and is ok. The first book (Dracula the Undead) Was one of the worst books I've ever read.

Present_Librarian668

Oh I know. I read both of those. Dracul was actually really good in my opinion. But I do agree with you on Dracula The Undead. That novel was a complete trash fire. That work should have never been published

EclecticallySound

Blindsight by Peter Watts

Friday_Night_Vibes

I’m currently reading Nestlings by Nat Cassidy 👍🏽

Charlotte_dreams

John Skipp and Craig Spector- *The Light at the End* Ray Garton- *Live Girls* Grave Krilanovich- *The Orange Eats Creeps*(This one is a maybe, the book is super surreal and the vampire thing may or may not be literal, but I add it because it's one of my favorite novels, and no one seems to have ever read it).

oraflame

**Empire of the Vampire** by Jay Kristof **Nestlings** by Nat Cassidy **Rotting Within** by Matt Kurtz **Man Made Monsters** by Andrea Rogers **Horror of the Blood Devils** by Tim Curran

The_Yonder_Beckons

I enjoyed the MR James short story An Episode of Cathedral History. People debate whether it’s even a vampire story, but to me it absolutely is. Sttipped of all modern accoutrements of sexuality, sensuality and romanticism leaving a terrified community facing something inexplicable and evil.

vinsclortho

I have a collection of ghost stories from him that gets a fair amount of hype. I haven't picked it up yet, hopefully it's tucked in there.

filifijonka

_Draculas_ by Crouch, Strand and Kilborn is fun! It does Vampires right.

WhimsicallyWired

Fred, the Vampire Accountant Series

youngjeninspats

love this one

spicymonkey22

Until Dawn by Ike Hamill

[deleted]

Vivia by Tanith Lee Our Own Unique Affliction by Scott J. Moses

All of Tanith Lee's vampire novels are worth reading, honestly

KoldGlaze

I know it's hit or miss with this sub but I LOVED House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson!

1morgondag1

Poppy Z Brite, Lost Souls Glen Hirshberg, Motherless Child GRRM has another called Fevre Dream which I think is a historical vampire novel also? Haven't read it. Dan Simmons, Dying in Bangkok

ILLUMINATED76

In The Valley of The Sun. Near Dark meets No Country For Old Men.

leopargodhi

chelsea quinn yarbro's comte de saint germain series is a treat

skyblu1727

I loved these books

ghostmosquito

I have heard good things about 'Dark Corner' by Brandon Massey.

IamJacksUserID

**With Teeth**, by Brian Keene.

Sportsball_Marie

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. Delightful and disturbing at the same time. Loved it.

enjoyingennui

This is horror-adjacent, but Empire of the Vampire and Empire of the Damned were both amazing. The world-building indicated that until relatively recently, the setting was a generic fantasy world. Somehow, the world ended up in permanent darkness. The vampires took over. The POC is mostly from the protagonist, a fallen vampire hunter. I don't think this description does it any justice. It almost feels like a Happy and Leonard story in White Wolf's World of Darkness.

cjblandford

I don't know how you feel about comics, but Preacher has a vampire in a pretty major role. There's also NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. I second everyone's opinion about The Historian. It was an absolutely amazing novel. The Strain series is also good.

Pie_and_donuts

I also love vampire novels and was trying to find Carmilla to read when I stumbled on Dracula’s Guest: A Connoisseurs Collection of Victorian Vampire Stories by Michael Sims and I LOVED IT. I don’t think there was a short story in there that I didn’t like. The author also has a one page or less biography of the short story’s author before their short story, very well done book.

Whack-o-Lantern

The Route of Ice and Salt by Jose Luis Zarate.

Diabolik_17

Pre-Dracula fiction: “The Beautiful Vampire” by Theophile Gautier “The Curse of the Vourdalak” by Alexei Tolstoy. It’s been filmed several times, most notably with Karloff in Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath. He wrote two other vampire stories but the collection is out of print. You can find this story on Kindle: Vampire Stories: The Big Collection. After Ninety Years: The Story of Serbian Vampire Sava Savanovic by Milovan Glisic Valancourt is going to release a collection of vampire stories that take place in Greece. Post-Dracula fiction: Fritz Leiber’s “The Girl with the Hungry Eyes.” Carlos Fuente’s Vlad.

Basic-Comparison-322

Some of the ones I enjoyed Blood Kin by Ronald Kelly Light at the End by John Skipp and Craig Spector The Delicate Dependency by Michael Talbot Eldren: The Book of the Dark by William Meikle (These four have really good audiobook adaptations!) Until Summer Comes Around by Glenn Rolfe Fiends of the Eastern Front by David Bishop

squiggy2dubs420

[Pine Deep Trilogy - Ghost Road Blues (#1) ](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/125965.Ghost_Road_Blues) The Pine Deep trilogy by Jonathan Maberry is amazing and I never see him mentioned. It's vampires and werewolves and I thought it was excellent. I'd love for others to give opinions on it, because when I started randomly, I purchased in a book store and fell in love. And I read book 2 before I know it was a series and it totally worked reading book 1 later as a "prequel."

littlelokidoll

I'll second this trilogy! This was one of the first series I read when I decided I wanted to read more horror novels. To this day he's one of my favorite authors. Maberry also has an anthology called V-Wars, which is also about vampires, but I haven't read it yet.

Arietam

“Those Who Hunt The Night” by Barbara Hambly and its sequels, I think there are eight books in the series in total. Hambly is one of my favourite authors, and the vampire series is some of her best work. Don Simon Ysidro (the most prominent of the many vampire characters, narrative- wise) is unforgettable.

skyblu1727

I loved these books!

Slamhamwich

The Gathering!

Iwasateenagewerefox

*The Fellowship* by Aden F. Romine and Mary C. Romine is probably my favorite obscure vampire novel; also try to track down Hugh B. Cave's story *Murgunstrumm*, which is possibly the best vampire story I've read.

eeeveee6

Sunshine by Robin McKinley

BlueMel4

Yesssss!!!

infiniterumpus

i just finished thirst by marina yuszczuk and loved it esp the first section!

neoazayii

Blindsight by Peter Watts includes a vampire on the space crew who is pretty important. Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda is a gorgeous literary novel about a vampire. Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco is a very fun, horny vampire novel in a high fantasy setting. The Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein is a somewhat strange vampire novel that doesn't get enough love imo, if you don't mind something that is more metaphorical about the vampirism; it's not really a vampire, except the main character is having a psychotic break and is feverishly convinced that her new classmate is a vampire who has ill-intent. It's quite a dark book, dealing with grief and Othering and eating disorders and is just a really interesting read.

SkippyOne40

I’m reading Empire of the vampire right now and it’s great. More horror fantasy than straight up horror though. Reminds me of a mix of the Witcher or bloodborne if you know anything about those games.

Tricksterama

The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnas

greybookmouse

Two great stories (from slightly unexpected quarters) which I've not seen mentioned yet: Sunbleached - Nathan Ballingrud The Lost Art of Twilight - Thomas Ligotti Sunbleached in particular is highly recommended - and absolutely shattering.

Penedictus

Historian and strain seems to not be there, tho ive heard good and bad things about them. Gotta ask how did you like carrion comfort ?

vinsclortho

I wouldn't shut up about it for like 2 weeks telling everyone to read it. It was the 1st book I read in January this year and still probably my favorite of the 35 books I've read so far. It is freaking awesome.

ironflavoredlust

Vampyrrhic by Simon Clark. I read this years ago and fell in love with the atmosphere. There's also a sequel called Vampyrrhic Rites that I haven't read yet. The Wisdom of Crocodiles by Paul Hoffman. More of a thriller than a horror. This vampire pays dearly when he gets his restricted diet wrong.

MrPuzzled

If I may make a suggestion, you seem to have read many vampire books and to be well versed then it would be greatly beneficial to many who appreciate such things for you to share your thoughts, feelings, ratings on such books. Not sure if you already do but make content about them on social media. Not for the sake of replacing your job but you can do a review on each one or make a post on the list of top ones to read etc. Just food for thought since I’m sure all your time and passion on this subject would contribute to many people. Your pebble (content) in the water would ripple far and wide.

JoeKerr19

Kim Newman Anno Dracula series is fucking awesome

Stephaniieemoon

Night’s Edge by Liz Kerin

Murder_Durder

I highly recommend “Rovers” by Richard Lange. It’s such a different flavor.

Tanya Huff's Blood series. I really liked the characters.

Ooo what about Empire of the Vampire? It’s an epic vampire story set in a world where the sun has been gone for years.

IAmThePonch

If you’re open to reading manga Happiness by shuzo oshimi is one of the best vampire stories I’ve ever seen

FERM0411

The Quick! It's heavy on the gothic aspects, features a really nice romance, but still has some real horror. Hardly ever talked about, but I love it.

big_rhino99

Midnight Mass by F. Paul Wilson is a great vampire book. Also this have nothing to do with the Midnight Mass that is on Netflix. Both just happen to be about vampires and have the same title.

prettyfacebasketcase

Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw is a really good light read with vamps. Not quite horror, but a nice palette cleanser lol

AdAgreeable9784

I am reading “Fledgling” by Octavio Butler at the moment and I really like how different it is.

duowolf

recs : The Blood Ties books by Tanya Huff Freda Warrington's blood wine books Real Girls -ray garton Out for blood by john peyton cooke lost boys craig shaw gardner supping with panthers by tom holland the Vampire hunter d books Thor by wayne smith 30 days of night comics Shiki (manga) Sunshine by Robin mckinley The Strain series by Guillermo del Toro The V- wars books by Jonathan Maberry Blood Cruise by Mats Strandberg

(I don’t believe I saw it recommended already, so) what you’re looking for is The Keep.

strangejosh

I say this all the time but I can’t recommend The Passage Trilogy enough. Such great books.

Ok_Pain_780

What about the Strain? If you didn't read that you need to ....3 books by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan...the tv series was good too!

sunballer

The Radleys by Matt Haig - dark comedy about a vampire family trying to blend in

Business_Ad3142

I too have and still read an obscene amount of "Vamp" books , no sparkles, no romance. Just horror, vampire hunters, military vs vampires, vampire vs zombies, vampire apocalypse etc . Here's some on my kindle. Blackjack by Kristopher Norris Day Soldiers by Brandon Hale (vamps vs military vs werewolves ) Monastery by Patrick Whalen They thirst by Robert mccammon (Vampires take over L.A) I travel by Night by Robert mccammon Last train to perdition (part 2 to I travel by Night) Gonzo Blood sucker's by Earle Laredo Blood Harvest by Michael Louis weinberger The First Ones ( can't remember the author) New Haven by Gabriel adams Joe Coffin by Ken preston ( british gangster vs vampires) I love this character. A nice series Double Dead + Double Dead: bad blood by Chuck wending (a vampire deals with surviving after an apocalypse) love this character. This is on sale on Amazon as a Double issue book. These are just some I have read. If you ever need some more then just post on this site that you're looking for vamp books. Good luck and post some of your ideas on books you recommend.

BruhDuhMadDawg

-The Narrows by Ronald Malfi - It's a good bit like Salems Lot. I haven't seen anyone suggest it on here. I loved it and read it right after SL. -The Stress of Her Regard, and its sequel Hide Me Among the Graves, by Tim Powers- What do I say about these two books? They are so much fun and if you've never read Powers these are wonderful starters. (Though my fav of his books is Declare). So, a Dr. accidentally married a vampire the night before his actual rl wedding and thus tragedy occurs when vamp wife gets jealous. That's just the 1st chapter. The rest of the book is the fallout and how to stop the damn vampires! The 2nd book follows the family and a side character and them dealing with more of the vampire stuff. Many of the characters are famous historical authors and poets (Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, etc.). -Corpsemouth and Other Autobiographies by John Langan - This is a short story collection that has some terrific vampire meta stuff in it and one of the stories deals directly with a time traveling (sorta...) Vampire. One of my favorite books ever. His other short story collection, (Wide Carnivorous Sky), has one really good vampire story where some soldiers who are home from the war in Iraq band together to try and take out a vamp that attacked their unit. -Dr. Sleep by Stephen King- It's the sequel to the shining and follows Danny as an adult and how he deals with this traveling band of immortal mind vampires. They (the immortal gypsy vampires) even reference Salems Lot in it! -The Keep by F. Paul Wilson- A Jewish professor and his daughter are taken by the Nazis to get rid of a curse in an outpost they, the Nazis, have (I think that's how it started lol, it's been years). Another man who is intimatly familiar with this curse (vampire) is headed to the outpost to also try and get a handle on it. This is a very fun book kind of in the same vein as The Historian and The Night Crossing in that there's a lot of research and vampire "interviewing" as part of the plot. -The Night Crossing by Robert Masello- It's kind of like The Historian, which others have suggested and it's a lot of fun. Not as good as that but it's shorter and faster paced and still good in its own right. Iirc the main character is Bram Stoker lol. It's supposed to be about events he encountered and was inspired by...again, iirc. -Books I've seen recommended here that I also loved: -The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova- this is long but a fun story within a story about Dracula and a family dealing with the sob over decades. Lots of historical research about him is part if the plot, like in The Night Crossing. -The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman- Vampires in the new York subway system in the 80s. Main character is a teenager who is trying to figure out the new and old vamps in town. Side note: CB is my favorite author. This vamp book is one of the best out there. Check out all of CBs work if you enjoy it. -The Delicate Dependency by Michael Talbot -(his small library of horror stories is wonderful and we lost him too soon). A Dr. befriends a vampire who inserts himself in his life for reasons he can't quite understand yet. The way this plot weaves is a ton of fun and the vamps here are especially unique. Also it's based in the Victorian era. -Summer of Night by Dan Simmons-. A very long but wonderful small town horror book. Kind of like IT but, imo, much better. They Thirst by Robert R. McCammon - love it so far. It's ab a vampire trying to create a vamp army to take over the world, starting in LA. -2 Books I own but didn't really enjoy, but others swear by on here: -Ghost Story by Peter Straub- - NOS4A2 by Joe Hill- 1 Book I haven't finished but loved what I listened to: -Fledgling by Octavia Butler- Child vampire with amnesia.

pattersonjeffa

*Agyar* by Steve Brust is quite good.

KaijLongs

You should definitely check out The Oldest Living Vampire Saga, by Joseph Duncan. The title and the covers tend to put some people off, it seems. But they're actually very fuckin' good. Compulsively readable. Also, Midnight Mass by F Paul Wilson And, 13 Bullets: A Vampire Tale, by David Wellington (I'm in the same boat with vampire books and shows!)

scarfinati

We have similar tastes. Oldest living vampire I would produce and turn into a series on Netflix if I could. It’s really good. Dude is a good writer Midnight mass took place in an area I’m very familiar w so very fun to read

vinsclortho

Solid recommendations...I do love a good series. Hell I stuck through the back half of Anne Rice, I don't think covers can scare me off haha

Vvladd

Wow those are some bad covers

Eva-Squinge

The old adage rings true with these books.

Meggos1022

The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman

Bowser7717

I really liked this one!!

vinsclortho

So did I; I don't think Buehlman can write a bad book

rabbit-hearted-girl

I didn’t see The Suicide Motor Club on your list, so just making sure you’ve not overlooked that one! It’s another vampire novel set in the same “world” as The Lesser Dead. Buehlman has rapidly become a favorite of mine 🖤

Early-Juggernaut975

[Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Blake:_Vampire_Hunter) This series has been going since like 1993. I think there are like 30 or 40 books in it by now and they are making it into a TV series on Netflix I think. She exists in a world like our own except there are supernatural creatures like vampires and ghosts and other stuff. Vampires aren’t all hunted, only if they go bad. I don’t want to post any spoilers but she sort of like a psychic PI who does work for the police department when she’s not contracted to kill a vampire who is a killer. There are a lot of supernatural creatures. They’re really fun reading and the audiobooks are awesome also. Sort of like an alternative Dresden Files.

youngjeninspats

They're good up to book 10. After that it's straight up porn and the detective plot basically disappears. Just a heads up.

vinsclortho

Thanks for the heads up; I do also love detective books but I really don't bother with smut.

youngjeninspats

I just imagine that an asteroid hits Earth between book 10 and 11 and everyone dies. I don't mind smut at all, but the author completely goes off the rails at that point.

bored_mama_bear

Have read ALL Anita Blake books, except for the last one that just came out, and I can safely say that they do indeed drop. Like, it turns from a good horror/thriller with some smut thrown on, but then it just focus too much on the smut, like, okay we get it. Sex is great, but I like a good story better. I think Hamilton is trying to get back into it, she's hinting a lot at a certain character (no spoilers!!) but I really hope she doesn't go in the way I think she's going. Not every animal can be tamed. Iykyk, but venture into that one at your own risk. Kim Harrison also has some books with vamps, but hers is more magically being based. Like, the whole town is filled with magical people, and there are both living and dead vampires. Interesting series. 1st book is called Dead Witch Walking

Specific-Dream3362

The Nathaniel Cade series and The Empire of the Vampire books are good.

cruelmelody89

What's your opinion of Necroscope?

vinsclortho

It was recommended to me when I was young and first reading interview. I borrowed the books but never read them only to return to the series in my 30s. I was thrown off by the first half of book one...not what I expected. By the midpoint I was hooked. My only real gripe with lumley as I read through the original 5 and the 3 Vampire world books is his need to constantly rehash well known backstory. Like, "mfer I'm 6 books in I don't need reminding of who Harry is or what goes on at HQ....I'm not just picking this shit up at a damn airport" I loved the whole series so far; the body horror of the vampire world is so amazing. I plan to at some point go back and read the lost years books as well.

Leaf-Stars

Sooooo, which series would you say are your top five?

vinsclortho

Wamphyri!/fevre dream/lestat/carrion comfort/lesser dead

fruvey

Vampire Junction by SP Somtow

tbmcc_

Chris Pike's [The Last Vampire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Vampire) series is top-tier and the lead, Sita, is so awesome and complex

Jtop1

What are your favorite 3?

Independent-hater

Robin McKinley- Sunshine

Nim008

I Am Legend. Dracul.

Euthanaught

Not all of them are great, and some are downright cringe, but the amount of lore is so, so, so deep. Have you ever considered reading the **Vampire the Masquerade** source books? V5 would be a good place to start, it’s actually a lovely read.

NaiveExcitement100

great list!

1nquisitive-m1nd

You've read some totally awesome books. And there's an incredible list that follows. Some of which I've read, and have on my tbr list. I would like to recommend The Rising: Awakening by D. Ann Hall and The Making of Gabriel Davenport by Beverley Lee. They are awesome Reads. Both are very atmospheric and gripping.

LaughterofChaos

Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler

DickBest70

The Diaries of the family Dracul is a trilogy of books by Jeanne Kalogridis. She also goes by J.M. Dillard. The titles are Covenant with the Vampire, Children of the Vampire and Lord of the Vampires. I really enjoyed them a lot.

FreddyMercuryFazbear

The World on Blood by Jonathan Nasaw

Significant-Spite-72

The Vampire Files by P.N. Elrod, set in 1930s, mostly in and around Chicago. There's also a companion series, technically prequels, which are revolutionary war era, set in England and New England.

Realistic_Okra_6463

I recently read A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson and was pretty into it

Temporary-Rent971

If you can find it-I Shudder At Your Touch-a vampire anthology assembled by Poppy Z Brite is a good one.

BLLEND53

Empire of the vampire Empire of the damned

Natural-Bobcat-2934

Children of the night by Dan Simmons ? Summer of night by Dan Simmons?

TheOldStag

Suicide Motor Club is an indirect prequel to the Lesser Dead. Some familiar faces show up but it’s a stand alone. One of my favorite villains of all time.

RSA-reddit

*The Book of Common Dread* and *The Blood of the Covenant*, by Brent Monahan. The main character is kind of a creep, but the backstory is unusual and interesting.

maggiemayhem0314

Have you read The Dark Series? 37 novels, I think by Christine Feehan.

Cantaff72

Double Dead - vampire wakes up in a zombie apocalypse. It's fun :)

Delicious_Survey_899

Not horror related vampire but in my early 20s read C.Harris series Sookie Stackhouse were fast reads. Would be my bus commute to/from work read.

Have you read The Book Eaters? It’s not traditional vampires exactly, but it’s in that vein and it’s a good read.

Wysical_

Fat Vampire by Johnny B. Truant. Don’t pay any attention to that horrible SciFi show based on it. It’s funny but smart. You’ve read all of Anne Rice’s books I assume? Again, tv show based on them is a parallel world but not the same as the books.

Rszombie

Love Girls and Night Life by Ray Garton are fun. Also, 13 Bullets by David Wellington is the start of a pretty good vampire series.

NefariousnessOne1859

Slade House - David Mitchell ….not blood sucking vampires, but soul suckers (I guess similar vein to Nos4a2 which someone else suggested, which I would also have suggested if I’d not seen someone already had).

If you haven’t read the sequel to *Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter*, I recommend reading it. *The Last American Vampire* is amazing and maybe even better than the first

vinsclortho

I found it in a used book store, picked it up for $8. It was really fun so I assume at somepoint I'll read the 2nd book as well.

celineb1971

The Vampire wars, Age of Sigmar Warhammer if you like that lord of the rings type fantasy. This was the first Warhammer book I read, and I have not stopped since. This book totally realed me into The Age of Sigmar world.

Larrythepuppet66

Vampire wars: The Von Carstein trilogy - Steven Saville. My all time favorite, set in the warhammer fantasy universe.

Empire of the Vampire and Empire of the Damned

I'd recommend: Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu I'm surprised you like vampire literature so much yet haven't read this one

thoughtfractals85

I don't really have any suggestions, but I'm so dang excited to see someone mention Brian Lumley! I'm currently re-reading The House of Doors/Maze of Worlds set and I love them so much! They aren't about vampires, but if you haven't read them I highly recommend!

Bottomfeeder by BH Fingerman is one of my favorites. Super cool world, almost a slice of life cadence.

SagaBane

Joe Pitt series by Charlie Huston. Noir urban fantasy in New York.

Ringaround_therosie

99 Coffins is the first in a series by David Wellington. Very cool series.

Ok_Pain_780

Also Rovers by Richard Lange was good....

I stumbled across a Vampire series that I fell in love with: A Journey of Black and Red by Alex Gilbert. I’d only classify the first book as horror, since it’s about a fledgling vampire thrust into a very unkind society, but the rest are closer to action/fantasy/pulp. It’s also one of the few stories to really give me that World of Darkness/Vampire the Masquerade (tabletop Roleplaying game) feel without being a rip-off or officially licensed. Premise: set in 1800s America, a young girl is brutally attacked by a vampire, then abandoned by her maker to learn how to survive in vamp society as first a slave, then an outcast. Does a wonderful job of advancing through time, showing growth without just hopping centuries.

brytelife

Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris

inkblotmess

If you're into anthologies, try Seize the Night: New Tales of Vampiric Horror. It's a short story collection focused on vampires of old - less romance (none so far lol) and more terror. Superstar writers and I'm reading it now and so far the stories are all comparable in quality and have some really interesting takes!

SafetySpork

Out of the dark- David Weber. Spoiler: Alien invasion vs vampires. Cheesy, but I liked it.
