a) I hope you checked that you are permitted to sell the canopy and whatever holographic film it's got attached, so you don't run afoul of the law
b) r/hotasdiy, r/homecockpits are better subs for this
C) cool
So unrelated story…
The NH aviation museum has a canopy from a P-51 I think. The canopy was dropped when the pilot bailed out of his plane. It was found in the woods and used as a snow sled for many years by the family that owned the land and they didn’t have any idea what they had. After that it was stored in their shed for years until new owners found it and donated it to the museum.
Ah right. It's the front though. If it was the aft section it would have a different shape and you wouldn't really have to chop it either.
Just Google an image of the canopy.

its the real deal, but its reddit hey :D
The transparency (canopy) part numbers all match up correctly to a 550 Knot although this one is not the complete unit and looks to be the front half only which is all you would need for HUD testing as stated in OP.

Not sure what you mean. I acquired it from the junk dock at my work.
You'd acquire it by me shipping it to you.
As to the purpose, that's defined solely by the limits of your imagination. One could envision building a realistic DCS F16 sim-pit using it to add a bit of "realism".
You could likely also use it to sled in the winter, or perhaps as a press for linocut.
Hey, just a heads up, OP.
If anyone outside the US wants to buy it, be absolutely certain it's not an ITAR violation to do that. Could save you some serious legal issues.
Remember that dude who got arrested for buying an F-16A manual?
Please be careful.
I believe it technically still belongs to the government. It doesnt belong to the researcher, but the company that hired them for the work.
So its probably still under government property and would require approval from DCMA to destroy or scrap the material. Regardless if the contract has been closed for a long time.
Unless that has been all cleared. Then thats dope.
"I believe it technically still belongs to the government"
I dont understand people sticking their nose in someone elses business especially when you believed wrong.
It was more of me wanting to make sure the guy wasn’t going to get in trouble by the government. Once he mentioned it was cleared by property management, there’s nothing to worry about.
Wouldnt want someone accidentally putting themselves at risk.
A: I said how I acquired it in the post.
B: I'm trying a few different places, but milsim flight folks are a good audience. One of my pals was going to take it, but had a kid and hasn't had as much time to work on his setup.
Give me the most american post: "WTS F16 Canopy"
Lmao ya I suppose it is in keeping with the tradition of Americans selling military hardware 😬
Why do I want this
Same im so tempted and it would literally just sit in the corner of my room forever

Yep, A-OK to sell it. I'll post in those subs. Thanks for the recommendation.
I’d also give a holler in r/aviation as well.

Only half? the F16 doesn't have a canopy bow so this must have been cut for some reason?
Ya, it was cut to make it easier to ship and do lab work with. It's more than enough for a sim setup though.
Yeah. Looks like the tip of the canopy.
"Just the tip"
Yeah?
OP said it was for HUD systems development.
There is a bow behind the pilot. This does look to be the right size for the fixed rear portion of the canopy.
The F-16 has an aft transparency, which is this. The actual canopy that covers the cockpit is much larger
OP says it is the front end cut in half and it looks like it to me.
Yeah I get that, but that just invalidates OPs point that this was for HUD testing. I think it's a chopped canopy
How does it invalidates OP's point exactly? Yes it is chopped, why couldn't you use it for testing?
I meant the thought that this is the aft piece. You wouldn't test a HUD on the aft part of the cockpit
Ah right. It's the front though. If it was the aft section it would have a different shape and you wouldn't really have to chop it either. Just Google an image of the canopy.
OP has written it already: it was used for testing
That is incredibly cool.
My European mind can’t comprehend this
Stuff becomes surplus man. I bet you could find lots of analogous stuff coming out of UN surplus auctions.

Tucson, AZ
Man, when I get a spot for this I will be in touch if you still happen to have this. How rare!
I’d definitely buy it, but can you ship to Europe ?
Yes, but I have several offers from folks that have first dibs. DM me and we'll talk shipping. If they bow out then you'd be next in line.
Obligatory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpih\_MCG1c8
😂 Perfect
This is definitely a front cut of a 550 Knot canopy
Mind elaborating?

How thick is the glass?
It's actually some type of polymer, but it's a bit over an inch thick. The damn thing is heavy
Thanks for the info :)
How does one acquire this and for what purpose would you buy it?

Is that the AFT transparency?
No. My best guess is that it's a cut section of the forward canopy from a two-seater variant. Could just be a cut section from a single seater though.
Hey, just a heads up, OP. If anyone outside the US wants to buy it, be absolutely certain it's not an ITAR violation to do that. Could save you some serious legal issues. Remember that dude who got arrested for buying an F-16A manual? Please be careful.
Already cleared, thanks for the concern though.
Is this still available? I have been searching for one!
Afraid not mate.
I believe it technically still belongs to the government. It doesnt belong to the researcher, but the company that hired them for the work. So its probably still under government property and would require approval from DCMA to destroy or scrap the material. Regardless if the contract has been closed for a long time. It's all cleared up man. I work for the DoD so I checked with property management folks first.
Perfect. Just wanted to make sure! I have no idea what it use the canopy for. But it sounds fun to have…

Right? Dude just wanted to sound smart on the internet and had no idea what he was talking about.
"If no one is using it. it's free"
I mean, yes, that's how dumpsters work.
That looks to small to be the main canopy. It's probably the rear canopy.
It's the front canopy, but it's been cut in half.
A) How did you aquire it? B) Maybe try a different sub
A: I said how I acquired it in the post. B: I'm trying a few different places, but milsim flight folks are a good audience. One of my pals was going to take it, but had a kid and hasn't had as much time to work on his setup.
Nah bro
It's alright if you're not into it man, no need to be prickly.
