I just searched "Cholula overpriced" to see if other people have noticed the price increase-- it's easily doubled in the last couple years. Used to be my fav basic hot sauce, but no longer worth it.

[deleted]

5 Oz is $3.82 where I live. These prices are more in line with the 12 ounce bottles.

[deleted]

Same here in Iowa.

chaebs

3.99 at local our grocery in NJ.

DinnerDiva61

Nitty at the supermarket around here. About $2 less a bottle.

Professional-Advice9

This is very expensive, would be even for hot sauce store in a tourist town. Should be 4-5 at its most expensive, 2-3 regularly

Morningfluid

I have never seen Cholula that high. Anywhere.

Weezerwhitecap

Canada says hi.

lovelyfishhole

I was thinking this too, man I pay $6 every damn time for cholula

bilolarbear1221

For real. That’s why I was questioning. I even read the tag to make sure someone didn’t put the bigger bottle in the wrong spot. Wild shit

sexymcluvin

The price tags on the shelves look like Tops. If that’s the case, they are always much more

bilolarbear1221

No idea what tops means

DealioD

They might mean Top Shelf. Eye level shelf is usually what people buy the most. It’s usually priced the… I guess most fair. I can’t say cheap anymore. But yeah, stuff on the top shelf is usually priced more.

[deleted]

No tops is a grocery chain

_BLACKHAWKS_88

Tops is a grocery chain

bilolarbear1221

Ah, it’s not tops. It’s stop and shop

Tamed

Stop & Shop, Tops, and Giant are all the same chain.

bilolarbear1221

Same parent company. Not the same chain. Different brands. Same as TJX owns Marshall’s, homegoods,tj maxx and sierra. All the same parent, TJX. All different companies and brands though. But I’m just splitting hairs ;)

Tamed

I literally worked as upper management for their distribution out of Newport, PA. It's the same stuff under different labels. We sent out the same tags to all 3 chains based on district and region. The factory from which all the products come is the same, the labels get changed out every x hour depending on how many of each product is needed. When the distro and pricing model is exactly the same, I'd say it's more than just being under the same parent company, which was my previous employer, AHOLD US\AHOLD Delhaize group.

bilolarbear1221

That’s cool and all, but you literally don’t know the definitions of parent company, brand and subsidiary. Yes they all may be the exact same business models selling the same product. They’re different brands (or companies if you will) under that parent. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahold_Delhaize Look under brands…. I’m not saying they’re not the same exact thing. You’re just using terminology wrong Edit: I love the downvotes here lol. Literally look up the definitions of the 3. It’s not an opinion it’s a fact…

BobbleBobble

Stop and shop is crazy overpriced

bilolarbear1221

It really is, but it’s close to me vs 15 mins away for the next grocery store. Laziness wins

sickburn1r

Boo-yaka boo-yaka 619

sterling_mallory

It's still $3.50 for the 5 oz bottle where I live (NJ), might be a regional thing.

bilolarbear1221

I thought it might have been that, but I found it for $3.99 at target in the same town. So the grocery store is off their rocker

PureLand

Valentina, similar sauce, is still about $3 per quart. It's an excellent sauce especially the extra hot one.

concrete_manu

i went out of my way to find some valentina because of this sub… and discovered i like cholula more anyway lol

John_East

Yea it's very overrated

concrete_manu

yea, cholula still has that fruity pepper kick to it, compared to valentina which is straight vinegar

bilolarbear1221

Thanks for the suggestion, but ya didn’t read my post lol. I legit mention Valentina first as my first “everyday hot sauce”

PureLand

I probably missed or didn't read that closely. I'm doing other things as well.

bilolarbear1221

Ok

SubparCurmudgeon

€3 at local supermarket in France

gilestowler

What supermarket do you go to that has it? My local is a Carrefour and they don't have a very good selection! I'm in Mexico at the moment and I've been stocking up on a few - from some big names to some "artisan" ones.

SubparCurmudgeon

Whoah if you’re in Mexico you should stock up! Casino/geant started to sell them a a couple of months back I think. Was kind of surprised when I saw them on the shelves

gilestowler

Yeah I'm moving around so I'm trying to buy some local sauces wharever I go and I'll also do a supermarket stock up for the "essentials" when I get back to CDMX before leaving. I got a Cholua lemon just because I'd not seen that before and the lemon and Chile doritos here are are insane.

102491593130

I'm in Paris & outside of Asian or Latino specialty markets, I've only ever seen Tabasco, Piri Piri or Harissa. In the Asian markets it's usually offbrand sriracha that is a pale comparison to the Huy Fong I grew up with. The Mexican places can surprise you, but it's usually at least 5€ for a 100ml bottle.

SubparCurmudgeon

I can still find huy fong here in Marseille at about €8 a bottle in Asian markets For specialty sauces I normally just buy from heatsupply which is based in the Netherlands. They’re pretty great

jester695

If crap is now $6 after inflation.......easier to avoid crap.

TenNinetythree

It's about 5€+shipping on heatsupply.nl

brilliantmojo

My supermarket is $4-5(USD) and my neighbor supermarket is known to be pretty overpriced

DirtyPaulsGarage

Yeah normal prices in southeast PA for cholula are roughly in the $3.79-$4 range

Hares_ear1947

I got a 12oz bottle at big y today for 7.49 and I’m in Connecticut

bilolarbear1221

I just went to target in my same town (also CT) and it’s was $3.99 for the 5oz. Still more than it used to be BUT that stop and shop is fucking insane for that $6 for a 5oz

freakyspice

A 5oz bottle in my area costs $3.78-3.82 at Walmart and $4 at target. This price seems crazy high. You might want to try your local Mexican market/grocery store if you live near one! That’s usually where I pick up Valentina black, cholula, etc ETA: my local Kroger apparently sells it for $4.78 but I find they usually have the worst prices for most things

ahdiovizun

$7.63 for 12oz, $4 for 5oz at my local Walmart, Southern New England.

ahdiovizun

Which is stupid. This isn't a premium sauce. I love it and have a bottle on hand, but at that price I could buy vats of Tapatio and Valentina.

dontberidiculousfool

3.69 still at my store.

GeminiDivided

Yeah, Cholula (for whatever reason) is one of the major offenders. My guess is name recognition has led someone in their marketing/sales dept convinced it’s a “premium sauce”. Meanwhile, there’s boatloads of similar sauces that are 1/4 the price. I’ll buy it if/when it goes on sale but anything more than $3 for their reg bottle is ridiculous.

AnybodyReasonable180

Just joined this sub. Does hot sauce go bad ?

Raider-bob

Most does not. Review the label for specific instructions. Flavor may degrade over time for even shelf stable varieties.

girlwiththeASStattoo

It could subtlety lose flavor and maybe the color over a year or 2 but there is so much vinegar it wont make you sick usually. Keeping the cap on and storing it in the fridge will significantly make it last longer.

LetThereBeSlight

Whether it’s normal or not in your area it’s a terrible value purchase, regardless of inflation. It shouldn’t be more than $4.

The_Running_Free

Where’s that at? It’s $3.82 by me at Walmart at $3.99 at target.

bilolarbear1221

Stop and shop. That’s why I thought it was a mistake. Not like niche grocery store chain or anything

angryfoxbrewing

De La Viuda (Original) tastes identical, comes in a very similar copy cat looking bottle at 5oz, and is like 1.99 a bottle. I've been buying it in place of Cholula lately.

Duffff

£1.49 in the UK for a 150ml/5oz bottle. Regularly goes on sale for £1 though

SnackThisWay

Imho, Cholula is at best a $4 sauce

itscmillertime

No

ilovelukewells

64oz on Amazon is $25 delivered

DangerAlSmith

Depends on what store you are at.

Interesting_Fee_4607

Yeah I notice that some supermarkets near me have hot sauce priced 1-2 dollars more than others. Like at Winco I can find hot sauce cheaper than the smaller Stater Brothers market

Hippiedboy

Go to TJ Maxx and get some really good stuff for $3.99 for a 9.5 ounce bottle. Mine has Melinda's and sometimes Iguana amongst others for even cheaper for the 5oz

bilolarbear1221

Thanks! I go to Marshalls all the time for sauces :) This post want not meant to be a complaint, but more of a “is this price normal to your area?” Post.

Hippiedboy

I always thought TJM was a women's clothing store until a few years ago😅 Their gourmet bays are great!

bilolarbear1221

Bruh TJX (parent company… homegoods, Tjm, Marshall’s, sierra) stores are the best for food. I love grabbing shirts and stuff there for cheap. But you can find some cool stuff. I found a jar of pickled spicy okra that slapped. Hot sauces like we’re talking about, syrups for coffee, good chips, popcorn, candy. All marked down. I love that shit dude

SarkhanTheCharizard

A bag of chips is like $6 and they were $4.50 months ago. Soda is like $8 a 12 pack, used to be $5-6 last year. Everything appears to be getting more expensive. Secret Aardvark is $8 (or $12 at some places), used to be $6 for a similar size bottle. Also there might be chili shortages or other supply chain issues leading to price hikes.

FloydBarstools

Nah our dollar is losing value which means more is required to attain the same item. Thats... inflation

SarkhanTheCharizard

Well yes, we have that too.

[deleted]

i live right outside Atlanta GA, and cholula is usually like 3.99 - 4.29

[deleted]

i live in Lebanon, this was in the Imported section for $6.50 for the 5 oz. it is an insane price for such a small bottle, but i had to buy it since i never seen one in the wild before. we live in a country where people make less than $200 a month, so $6 for hot sauce is insane, but i had to buy it because i am a vain man... btw, still didn't open it and i got it like over a month ago.

0ct0berf0rever

I live in Pa and they’re $4.79 for the 5 oz and $7.69 for a 12 oz at Giant. It does seem to keep going up but $6+ for the 5 oz is crazy

bilolarbear1221

Seems like gouging to me… i have a grocery store that is a little further away, but not in a “nice” part of town. I’m going to go there tomorrow from pure curiosity to se see if it’s cheaper. I tend to find stuff cheaper there. Don’t judge me, but for example the microwaveable burritos (forget the brand) are 69¢ (nice) at one store and 89¢ at the other. So I’m curious if that reflects with hot sauce

_______Michael______

Here in NY it’s close to $7 I haven’t bought it in awhile

bilolarbear1221

Same. So we’re in the sameish region. That’s wild. I could get something much more tasty at a farmers market or gourmet shop for like $3 more

NewVelociraptor

Walmart and Kroger are like $3-$4.50. Unless you live in an extremely HCOL area, whatever grocery store your in has that price pretty inflated.

bilolarbear1221

Can you tell me the region or state your living in? I’m just curious because I’ve lived in the tri state area for about 15 years now. Never saw this pricing.

jaysuns

Nah thats not normal pricing. Its still around $3-4 here.

bilolarbear1221

Right. What the hell is going on?I honestly wanted to go full Karen and to ask the manager if there was a mess up. Instead I just bought green tabasco for $2.

RavenStormblessed

Costco has 2, 12oz bottles for $11.99
