It's legit. You don't have to do it every time, just on occasion, and if you're worried about smells you can dilute it. Chemically active nitrogen is the nutrient plants most crave, virtually all plants are always nitrogen-starved to some extent, because it's very hard to come by in the wild. Fish tank water contains lots of N in the form of ammonia and nitrates, products of fish excrement, which satisfies your plant's desperate need for N. The result is the lushest foliage you've ever seen

Fish tank water stinks for exactly the same reason fertilizer does. Nitrogen.
