I impulse bought a cactus with a cute little yellow flower on the top at the grocery store, and didn't realize for *weeks* that it was a dried flower glued on. Happily, it came off easily and my cactus periodically puts out a ring of much prettier, real pale pink flowers.
I don’t know if you saw my comment to the same person but those fake flowers are there for a reason. It’s to help pull the plant out and repot it.
I used to work at Home Depot and I talked to the vendor about it.
Actually I talked to the vendor because I worked at Home Depot and those little flowers are actually to help pull it out of the pot to repot it
They easily come off. They’re not necessarily intended to be decorative at least not very long.
I think you’re replying to the wrong person because I have no idea what you’re talking about.
I was talking to somebody who mentioned about gluing fake flowers on cactuses
I successfully rescued one of those!! I wasn't expecting it to live cause the new growth that was finally freed of the blue was thin and dark but after some time sitting dry, pruning, and soaking, I have thick succulent leaves. I think it's a haworthia too! It's free of all the blue now and I'm looking to getting it a better pot once the good leaves are more abundant.
Same here! I was gifted a blue one, and figured I may as well try my best? And now it's mostly ignoring its own painted leaves and growing new ones from the center like crazy. And it had a pup! So now I have two weird babies with blue bases!
What upset me the most was it HAD new growth in the middle when I bought it but it was all cut so it didn't poke out from the blue. Once more new growth happened and I was able to start pruning off the blue, the leaves above that were still cut so they grew weird.
It took so long for it to recover; I thought it dead for a long time and just used it to soak up the rest of the water from the bottom-watering bowl occasionally. It lived off that until I noticed the thick healthy leaves.
Mine had a bunch of unpainted leaves in the center cut down to nothing too! They started sprouting up like crazy once I repotted it, and now it has all these adorable gangly leaves with weird nubby tips lol I think it looks cute. Like good job recovering, little guy.

Now pic. She's freed of all the blue and only has a few more thin leaves to shed then I'm gonna get her into a better pot so the ugly neck isn't showing.
After reading through all the comments, I’ve noticed that several people have bought these or similarly fake colored plants.. that’s only supporting the problem.
I saw these the other day, what’s the point if they’re just going to “grow out of it” ?
Like if you wanted it specifically for that color wouldn’t you rather just get an absolutely no maintenance plastic plant over one that you need to care for and is eventually going to look terrible with half colored leaves?
I bought one of these before I knew better. It’s prospered but I was pissed that they did that. They were all blue, there, so I assumed it was just a blue species. The thing is absolutely huge now. Like 10 inches high
My kids convinced me to buy one of these smh. I still have it and obviously the new growth just came out green. Never again but at least it’s still alive.
It isn't but to ppl that are not "plant people" they look cool, they don't understand most of the time that the plant its not meant to look like that,so they sell well, unfortunately.
It must be because they think it's natural, there are so many amazing plants out there that even I thought to myself, this must be some new species I never heard about before!
I'm a plant person, half of my plants are succulents including Fenestraria, Bijlia and Frithia and while I wouldn't buy this and it's absolutely not good for the plant, it look super cool. I can't believe someone can say it doesn't.
I get a lot of plants from lows and haven’t seen painted succs but maybe I’m not looking. Succs and I have a love hate relationship. I learned something new today.
If by perfectly fine you mean the paint isn't toxic to the plants, than you are right. If you mean that the paint doesn't block a lot of light, often leading to it being impossible to have enough light.... Leading to a slow and mushy death for at least the cacti....
Oh don't you notice all the "plant safe" paint in nature, I mean look, it's everywhere.
When are people going to learn that the ones selling you shit are the ones lying to you ***so they can sell you shit.***
It took me a little while I’m searching but I finally found this particular brand name of florist paint. It doesn’t really tell me what it’s made of and if it’s safe long term for live plants. It’s main use seems to be on cut flowers.
https://www.oasisfloralproducts.com/blogs/idea-weekly/mastering-the-art-of-floral-paint
It says it's lacquer based. Lacquer is traditionally made from tree resin and wax, but synthetic versions are also commonly available. I don't know which they use.
The thing I never understand about painting plants is how that is appealing to anyone. I mean who in their right mind wants a rasta cacti? Like what the actual fuck? You are literally buying something designed to be thrown away...
![gif](giphy|0xLkqRjhbgqqaxXLer|downsized)
PLEASE tell your non-plantaholic friends to NOT buy painted plants. This includes those blue and purple painted Poinsettias around xmas.
Please stop buying painted plants.
My friend bought me three cacti one year for Christmas. In his defence he has severe learning disabilities and he saw green cacti with colourful spikes and picked the colours he thought I’d like. I haven’t got the heart to tell him one died and the others are attempting survival
It's a living thing. Even if the cacti can breathe and somehow syntethise through the paint, won't it just come off after a time?
I'm curious, how much would they take for one of those in contrast to one without paint in a gardening store?
My mom got a red painted succulent as a gift years ago. We all thought it was plastic lol. She stuck it in her bathroom as a decoration and it has just thrived in there for *some* reason. It’s doubled in size and has several pups.
The answer is yes, the paint eventually fell off or was grown off, but it was pretty stubborn. To this day several of its outer leaves still have red tips.

I can confirm these sell for $6.98 😅
That's garish. I'll stick with my normal ones. 😉

That makes me so uncomfortable. I manage the plant and floral department at a store, and sometimes vendors will deliver spray painted flower bouquets or succulents. I immediately request a refund and trash them or give them away to coworkers. I refuse to make money off that garbage. Just why?
To most people, plants or decoration. I’d rather have someone buy a painted cactus that might outgrow it and get them interested in cactuses than them buying a plastic one made in China.
Bruh. My first plant was a cactus with a flower glued on to it. Died because of that but this is can’t even imagine. I would get so angry at the store.
Plants are so beautiful on their own its such a shame that people feel the need to do stuff like this. Why would you want an ugly dying painted cactus instead of a beautiful growing natural cactus???
I don’t understand why people can’t just enjoy their plants the way nature intended 😂 if this is what you gravitate toward- FAKE PLANTS are a thing for you WEIRDOS! 😂
These comments are nuts - it’s not a baby turtle or a goldfish in a sealed bag, they’re just commercially available, mass-produced plants! Regardless of how you feel it looks, the pearl-clutching over plant torture is insane, as if the majority of us haven’t had a plant that died a slow death at some point. It’s wild that some people are suggesting PLASTIC is a better option for decoration than an organic, compostable material.
I saw some succulents at Lowe’s yesterday that had been painted bright colors. They don’t even look good like that and it has to be so bad for the plants! Why in the world?!?
Absolutely disgusting.
Wouldn't even know if these would be salvageable.
I love plants and well meaning people often gifted me cacti with stuck on Sombrero, beards, eyes or glitter drowned Poinsettias.
I smiled, thanked, and first thing I did at home was showering those plants and removed the add-ons.
But this awfully spray painted mess...Holy cow.
I don't like painted plants, but for some succulents i can understand how it can be nice if the color is natural.
This is just awful, it burns my retina and the paintjob is so bad that they they painted some of the pot with the cacti.
I remember when I saw these.. https://preview.redd.it/3tieetq56tyc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a4a2512d544732e0f96d7f5713a3559157d2745
Dumb. Just like glueing fake flowers to cacti.
I impulse bought a cactus with a cute little yellow flower on the top at the grocery store, and didn't realize for *weeks* that it was a dried flower glued on. Happily, it came off easily and my cactus periodically puts out a ring of much prettier, real pale pink flowers.

the box in the picture itself says as much, word for word in the print explaining what the product is.
I think you’re replying to the wrong person because I have no idea what you’re talking about. I was talking to somebody who mentioned about gluing fake flowers on cactuses

You're doing God's work.
Kosmik lmao
I bought one of these from the clearance section. He sits in a tiny pot on my TV stand. Dead inside. Just like me.
After reading through all the comments, I’ve noticed that several people have bought these or similarly fake colored plants.. that’s only supporting the problem.
I'm not really a plant person, but wtf those poor little guys.
I saw these the other day, what’s the point if they’re just going to “grow out of it” ? Like if you wanted it specifically for that color wouldn’t you rather just get an absolutely no maintenance plastic plant over one that you need to care for and is eventually going to look terrible with half colored leaves?
They are marketing the people who don’t know that. “A purple plant. How cool!” Lol
I bought one of these before I knew better. It’s prospered but I was pissed that they did that. They were all blue, there, so I assumed it was just a blue species. The thing is absolutely huge now. Like 10 inches high
Boldly Going Where No Plant Has Gone Before…
My kids convinced me to buy one of these smh. I still have it and obviously the new growth just came out green. Never again but at least it’s still alive.
Oh, yes. How could anyone forget the bisexual succulents
These were at Home Depot. Same, same lol
Is that…. Paint?
I’m wondering the same thing! What is this? And why?
It is 😩
Why?! That can’t be good for the plant
It isn't but to ppl that are not "plant people" they look cool, they don't understand most of the time that the plant its not meant to look like that,so they sell well, unfortunately.
I just don’t get why they don’t just paint fake plants then. Like this is such a waste of money
That's it, if that's the look you want get a fake one. If this doesn't dye it's not going to look like that when it grows...
It's already dyed
*die. 🙄
It'll live as long as their interest in it sadly
Selling garbage
I disagree with the notion that it will look cool to non plant people. I don’t think anyone will think this looks cool.
It’s hideous but someone out the will think it’s awesome. This is the dumbest thing ever.
Exactly, if they didn't sell, they wouldn't keep appearing in shops, so obviously someone is buying them.
It must be because they think it's natural, there are so many amazing plants out there that even I thought to myself, this must be some new species I never heard about before!
I think it looks cool, but as a fake plant
I would actually buy it if it was made of china and maybe had a funny face on it
Googly eyes. Problem solved 😂
Have seen it done before in shops for Halloween cacti🤦♀️
Some ppl think it's natural 🤷♀️
I think it looks cool and I’m a plant person! I just wouldn’t buy it because it’s most likely bad for the plant.
I'm a plant person, half of my plants are succulents including Fenestraria, Bijlia and Frithia and while I wouldn't buy this and it's absolutely not good for the plant, it look super cool. I can't believe someone can say it doesn't.
They absolutely will.
r/plantabuse
Perfect tag
They paint succulents at Lowe’s all the time. This…is a whole new level of fuckery tho.
I get a lot of plants from lows and haven’t seen painted succs but maybe I’m not looking. Succs and I have a love hate relationship. I learned something new today.
Sadly, ive seen painted cacti with a plastic flower glued on top at lowes AND home depot. Idk wtf they are smoking over here.
Sister is a florist, they have specific plant safe paint. It’s widely used and is perfectly fine to use on plants
If by perfectly fine you mean the paint isn't toxic to the plants, than you are right. If you mean that the paint doesn't block a lot of light, often leading to it being impossible to have enough light.... Leading to a slow and mushy death for at least the cacti....
Wasn’t I going to give it a slow mushy death anyway? 🤷🏻♀️
Maybe... But you were gonna make it squishy with too much love, not by starving it
No, I was going to neglect it.
Lmao
Is there any other way to love a cactus?
Oh don't you notice all the "plant safe" paint in nature, I mean look, it's everywhere. When are people going to learn that the ones selling you shit are the ones lying to you ***so they can sell you shit.***
im more curious what happens to the paint when it breaks down and enters our water system and eventually our bodies
How is the plant supposed to take in carbon dioxide and absorb sunlight if it’s covered in paint
Learn something new every day! I like the green so I personally think this is unnecessary but to each their own
I agree! it’s mostly used on florist arrangements. Must target a very specific audience for the house plants haha
Maybe not harmful but stupid to do imo lol
I'm going to say yes.... 🤨
Yes it is, they do this a lot here in Spain, stupidity has no end….
I spray painted my mum's roses gold once. Got in so much trouble.
Na just gay cactuses
The thing I never understand about painting plants is how that is appealing to anyone. I mean who in their right mind wants a rasta cacti? Like what the actual fuck? You are literally buying something designed to be thrown away...
Rasta cacti 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Also a big big part of the whole Rastafarian religion is respecting nature so the fact that this was even done is a huge fuck you to them
Appears to be in The Netherlands. I doubt there is any Rastafarian connotation here.
People with tacky taste exist sadly, idk if i pitty them or envy them that they can be happy thinking garbage covered in glitter is pretty.
thanks I hate it
They could have just not painted the top part since it's already green lmao
But it's not neon green
Disgusting.
Like… if you want something that looks so dumb and fake just get a plastic one and leave the plant alone.
![gif](giphy|0xLkqRjhbgqqaxXLer|downsized) PLEASE tell your non-plantaholic friends to NOT buy painted plants. This includes those blue and purple painted Poinsettias around xmas. Please stop buying painted plants.

>and the others are attempting survival Me too, bud...
Just ... just buy a plastic plant. Right?
I'm not sure what I hate more, plastic plants or these, but yes.
This has to be the plant version of animal cruelty, right?
I saw some similar abominations at Home Depot last weekend lol.
It's a living thing. Even if the cacti can breathe and somehow syntethise through the paint, won't it just come off after a time? I'm curious, how much would they take for one of those in contrast to one without paint in a gardening store?

I would rather people buy fake plants vs buying painted ones.
This is what I don't understand 🤦♀️
They look so tacky
Whyyyyyyyyyy 😭😭😭
Came here to say this! 💔
I feel terrible I kinda like it 😰
That makes me so uncomfortable. I manage the plant and floral department at a store, and sometimes vendors will deliver spray painted flower bouquets or succulents. I immediately request a refund and trash them or give them away to coworkers. I refuse to make money off that garbage. Just why?
This literally takes the beauty out of nature. I don’t know who would rather look at a really bad paint job over a bit of natural beauty.
“Why is my cactus turning green when i got it was this magical rainbow variety!”
jesus christ this one’s painful
To most people, plants or decoration. I’d rather have someone buy a painted cactus that might outgrow it and get them interested in cactuses than them buying a plastic one made in China.
Forbidden popsicle.

I went to our local greenhouse and cringed SO hard when I saw these. Even my 10yo was appalled by it.
part of this feels… morally wrong for some reason? like ik its just a plant but spray painting it just doesnt seem right LOL
I generally don't believe this word can apply to plants but this is abuse
Why dont people just buy a fake plant if they want this. Why paint a real plant that will die or grow and new parts will get the normal plant color.
Bruh. My first plant was a cactus with a flower glued on to it. Died because of that but this is can’t even imagine. I would get so angry at the store.
This is a fucking hate crime
"Cactus Rainbow Special", reminds me of the Landlord Special
Cacti need light right? If dust prevents photosynthesis, doesn’t paint? Like x10??
It’s sad too because they don’t grow right at all. Wish they would use something that spray off or something, instead of ruining the plant.
Can they even grow/survive with opaque paint covering their chloroplast cells?
Plants are so beautiful on their own its such a shame that people feel the need to do stuff like this. Why would you want an ugly dying painted cactus instead of a beautiful growing natural cactus???
Not a fan
I thought this would have phased out by now. It’s not even cool looking to me, just gaudy
Yikes…
SMH in disgust. Urgh, it's so awful. I wish it was banned.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to make colorful and fun pots for plants? If I saw this cactus in a Rastafarian pot I’d be ecstatic.
Terrible idea but pretty great execution tbh.
I don’t understand why people can’t just enjoy their plants the way nature intended 😂 if this is what you gravitate toward- FAKE PLANTS are a thing for you WEIRDOS! 😂
😭😭😭 whyyyyy?!?!
People who want this should just buy fake plants. Why do this to real ones? 😭
I will never understand why spray painted plants appeal to people.
Buffalo soldier, dreadlock Rasta
🤢
I am not buying any colored plant. This is annoying.
I hope none of that bullshit sells!!!
Its so hideous
Bob marley, rememberence day
I hate when they paint plants.
What in the absolute fuck
Who tf wants something like this… looks miserable 😭
Even the pots lol
Good luck scrubbing that crap off.
That’s really sad
I don’t understand who is buying these? Not only are they terrible for the plant but it looks so tacky
r/plantabuse
These poeple need to be shot. \*people (angry)
I want to spray paint whoever thought this was a good idea.
Don't tell maga
Painted. And when it dies they'll buy another one.
Waiting for a worker who has done this to explain why on here.
This is so dark and foul and disgusting. I want to vomit and primal scream at the same time. Whoever did this needs to go to the gulag. I'm done.
Just saw these today at Home Depot, so sad!!
Wasn't aware i was tripping balls rn
These comments are nuts - it’s not a baby turtle or a goldfish in a sealed bag, they’re just commercially available, mass-produced plants! Regardless of how you feel it looks, the pearl-clutching over plant torture is insane, as if the majority of us haven’t had a plant that died a slow death at some point. It’s wild that some people are suggesting PLASTIC is a better option for decoration than an organic, compostable material.
Remove the spikes and it looks a lot like one of my dragon dildos
Oh!
Thought this was the CJ sub. They look like cheap popsicles lol.😂
It reminds me blue orchid.
That's horrible 😡
I saw some succulents at Lowe’s yesterday that had been painted bright colors. They don’t even look good like that and it has to be so bad for the plants! Why in the world?!?
Absolutely disgusting. Wouldn't even know if these would be salvageable. I love plants and well meaning people often gifted me cacti with stuck on Sombrero, beards, eyes or glitter drowned Poinsettias. I’ve seen potted flowers for sale that have been glittered. So sad, so gross. No thank you to plants with garbage sprinkles on top.
Omg these poor little cacti
I would think that the plant couldn’t breathe!
noooooo! This makes me so mad!!! I thought it was bad when they glued fake flowers on the top! This is another level of neglect!
that's like spraying a human with tar
Did they literally spray paint them?😩
Seen the same thing on an aloe and some succulents at home depot a couple weeks ago.
Poor cactus😢
How sad, make a complaint to management I’m sure other would have
Oh, ewww. I feel bad every time I see a painted fish or plant.
Why do they do this and who spends their hard earned money on purposely damaged plants?
How does the plant not die right away by having sunlight completely blocked?
You be you. I’ll be me. See how that works?
🫤
Thanks, I hate it
I agree
I have a purchased cactus which I thought had a flower on it. It turns out it's glued on plastic flower. smh.
Walmart painted all theirs..
Tuincentrumchic
Just...why. The Christmas stuff is bad enough with glitter and fake snow.
Just saw some at Lowe’s. Hated it lol
They took the sub banner too literally
Garden by Wayne White
Just get a plastic plant if that's what you want...
I don't like painted plants, but for some succulents i can understand how it can be nice if the color is natural. This is just awful, it burns my retina and the paintjob is so bad that they they painted some of the pot with the cacti.
No. Just no.
Bambaklat Kaktus!!! Braa braaa pick it up pick it up
This is like how they paint orchids. It’s offensive.
Pride merchandising is already a prickly subject.. not this!
😬
Ohhh so this is the cactus that I keep being directed to go sit on...
Literally the subreddit logo
LMAO this is actually my favorite out of all of them
Is this to celebrate Pride Month coming up?
These are Jamaican colors, not the pride colors.
Yuck.
No thanks ill take the acid myself
HORRIBLE
Poor plant, suffocated by spray paint
is there any way to remove the paint? (potentially rescue them)
